I finally went in for some take out.  The place definitely needs a facelift, it was Saturday and it was super casual, kinda hole in the wallish type place.  I like that you can dip in there real casual, just looking for some good deli.  I ordered pastrami, it was hot, lean and my husband was impressed.  I took home some rye bread, it was soft, fresh.  The chicken noodle hit the spot and they had an assortment of knishes and other delicacies....I'm not a sable or whitefish person, but for someone who is, I can't see this place not being able to offer up the goods.  I'm not sure about the bagels, I just moved from ny and am very critical....but they have my vote on their take out food.  Expensive, yes....maybe with a lil remodeling, you can justify price more in your head.....but they were busy...so why fix it if its not broken???.

I popped into Jerry & Harvey's two Saturdays ago for the first time in twenty-plus years, and I've been back twice since.  It's a beautiful place in the figurative sense because it opens at 8 a.m., and anywhere I can get my Sloppy Joe on at that hour is first rate in my book.  It's a beautiful place in the literal sense because the deli case is loaded with amazing offerings, from smoked fish  to meatloaf.  Sable on a hot, fresh bagel with a schmear?  Check.  No, checkmate.

Personally, I'm inclined to prefer the sandwiches down the road at Fred and Murry's, if for no other reason than that they're bigger and slightly cheaper (though I think the ingredients are a slight cut above here).  I guess it's a matter of taste.  I am a fan of the way they slice the turkey breast very thick, and how it feels and tastes more like Thanksgiving leftovers than something processed.  On the other hand, I like my corned beef and pastrami very fatty, and they seem to tend more toward lean at this establishment.  But, they're more generous with the pickles.  It's really a toss-up, unless you're looking for Kosher, which this place is not.

At any rate, it's a fine establishment and very worthy of your patronage.  Don't listen to people who try to sound worldly and subtly insult you by ranting about "suburban delis", how it used to be back in the old countr..., er, Brooklyn, or how Harold's buries you under a dumpster load of sub-par meat.  Jerry & Harvey's has been here for a very long time, and there is a good reason.
