They have a topping here that is called "krunch coat" or "peanut brittle". It's kind of like peanutbutter flavored rice krispies. I've also seen it at Salem Willows Park. I wasn't impressed.

Hours are terrible. 11 people lined up at 8:30 - closed.

This is the kind of place you drive by in the winter and daydream about it being open on a warm day when you're on your way back from a hike with your dogs at Whitney Thayer Woods up the road. You look, and you long, and you wait...

And then finally, they open for the season! For me, J.J.'s is not about fancy ice cream. It's all about a vanilla soft serve cone with chocolate "jimmies" (or "sprinkles, if you're not a native). It's delicious and it tastes like childhood. Instant mood adjustment.

When the "Open for the Season" sandwich board goes up in front of JJ's, it's my first and favorite sign that summer is here. This road side dairy shack has been a perennial go-to for warm weather treats since I was a little kid. They have soft serve with a variety of dips (cherry, chocolate, butterscotch!) or topping options (sprinkles, Krunch coat!)  as well as Gifford's Ice Cream if you want something a lil harder. I've been a loyal devotee to the vanilla soft serve with cherry dip since the 80's but I get that other people might want to mix it up a bit.

So here's your mission should you choose to accept it:
    Head to Cohasset.
    Pull up to JJ's.
Park wherever there's open pavement- no need to look for spaces, it's a free-for-all.
Hop in one of the 2 window lines (left side always seems to go faster)
Dodge the Little League team celebrating their victory/drowning their sorrows in lactose.
    Place your order.
Bring your pup (they're generous with the milk bones!)
    Take ice cream, give $$.
Now go sit on the white picnic tables to the right and devour your summer treat before whatever cone/cup concoction you settled on turns into a delicious sticky disaster.

    Lather-Rinse-Repeat.

Love getting pulled into local traditions, and JJ's ranks with leaves changing and boats dropping as a seasonal sign of the Cohasset times.

Following month after wintry month hearing about the plethora of fruity, transmorphic dips for their stellar soft serve, we COULD NOT skip an afternoon trip to JJ's (even after incredibly filling sandwiches from Circe's Grotto - more on that later).

She had her order set, as is customary with the locals: vanilla with cherry dip in a cup. I waffled, obviously showing my neophyte ways while succumbing to the overwhelming options - hard scoop or soft serve, yogurt or ice milk, banana split or extra thick frappe, chocolate sprinkles or a cheeseburger, whatshappeninghere...

That's when the cucumber-cool gal behind the counter said four words I love to hear: "You wanna sample something?"

    Why, yes. Yes I do.

One bite of the vanilla soft serve rolled in Krunch Kote (bashed-up peanut brittle and rainbow sprinkles) and I was sold. A massive tower anchored in a cake cone and her cuppa something special only cost $6 and certainly cured what ailed. And to ice the cake, they gave us a biscuit for the pup. You kids rule!

Word to the wise: even if you're not a fan of the cone, get it anyways. The small swirl towers what you'd get in the same size cup. You have been warned.

More words to the wise: Lime and banana dips have been discontinued. Sad panda.

I went here last Friday night with my family and was very disappointed..
Nice enough girls at the window but VERY slow and they need more than 2 working the windows....I found the ice cream just average, small for the inflated price and the dips ( butterscotch, and cherry ) were flavorless and tasted like wax...Dont know why anyone would rave about  this place...found it overpriced and the ice cream lousy...will not stop here again

I love soft-serve vanilla ice cream and it can vary from place to place - some tastes like ice milk, others melts too quickly - JJ's is PERFECT. It is hard to resist when I drive by. It is super craemy, just the right texture. Prices are good and they have good burgers too. I try to avoid the post-game little league crowds....most of the time the service is fast & friendly. Worth a stop if you like soft serve!

Apparently soft serve vanilla was my first solid food and I smiled when it hit my lips. 26 years later, I still love going to JJ's. Doesn't that kind of say it all?

I'm a sucker for almost any ice cream stand and JJ's is a great  one. It's heavenly to go on a warm summer night.
My favorite is the vanilla-chocolate twist with jimmies while the husband goes for a chocolate cone dipped in butterscotch. And JJ's loves everyone in the family so we bring our dog who gets vanilla in a cup which they top with a dog biscuit!

JJ's!!!  This is my mother's all-time favorite ice cream stand (and definitely ranks highly in my own rankings).  She gets so sad every year when they close for winter, but she's first in line for the start of the summer season.  There was a time not too long ago when the waitresses knew our order by heart.  :-).

JJ's is an excellent little dairy stand in Cohasset that is more than just a Cohasset staple, it's a South Shore staple.  My family ventured from Scituate/Humarock and now Needham to go there.  We must get there at least twice!

I would like to note that JJ's has ice milk, not ice cream.  It's better for you and actually tastes better (in my most humble opinion).  The chocolate/vanilla twist with chocolate jimmies is awesome.  Their banana splits are great.  My brother is a fan of their twisters (mix in oreos, etc.).

I've also had burgers from here.  They're not great, but they are super cheap (about $3).  A bit greasy, but hey, it's a little dairy stand!

If you find yourself on the South Shore and can make your way over to Route 3A in Cohasset, check out JJ's.  You won't regret it.

Yummm :) definitely a Cohasset tradition!

We used to come here ALL the time when we were little. Hot day and Mom wanted us out of the house? She'd bring us here for a treat - always an awesome part of your day.

I still stop by occasionally with friends, and it's still as awesome as I remember!

5 stars for never suggesting my large chocolate soft serve with chocolate dip should go into a cup with a cone on the side.

Hands down the best soft serve ice cream available.  No toppings for me, the vanilla soft serve ice cream is worth savoring all by itself... although I will occasionally devour a hot fudge sundae.

In the 20+ years I've been going here the place hasn't changed much at all and I hope it never does.

Every year the opening of JJs signals that summer is just around the corner!  Even my toddlers are big fans.  Unfortunately, my experiences here this year have been less than ideal.  Let's hope that the rude customer service and lackluster milkshakes and frappes are only due to early-season jitters and untrained staff.

The milkshake my friend ordered resembled chocolate milk and tasted awful, the chocolate frappe my husband ordered was thin and had very little taste.  However, the vanilla soft serve with jimmies or rainbow sprinkles remains fantastic!  Maybe we will just be sticking to the basics this summer - even sourpuss servers can't keep us from enjoying our favorite summer spot.

A great old-school ice cream stand to take your family to...

Beware, they make their own soda and it's a tad on the nasty side and the food is so-so...but if you're looking for ice cream and a fun summer atmosphere, this is your place.

Parking can be tricky on a busy summer night and traffic from 3A is usually moving fast...be careful.

I love love LOVE this place.  Their soft serve is 95% fat free and there is nothing better than a plain vanilla soft serve with colored sprinkles. I get this at least twice a week here and my waistline doesn't thank me!

It's staffed by friendly high school and college aged girls-I do know it is seasonal, so I'm not sure when it closes for the summer.  The small soft serve is a VERY generous portion. I usually get a kiddie size as even thought it is 96% ff it is very rich.

I had their moose tracks last night as they were out of soft serve vanilla (the horror) and was NOT disappointed.

5 stars all the way for JJs.
