The Shrimp plate is amazing buttery, garlic-y, goodness. mmmm.

Kaya's is a great stop along Kamehameha Hwy. Whether you are heading to or from the north shore, you can always find something good to eat at Kaya's

We stayed at Pat's at Punalu'u for 3 days and frequented Kaya's several times as it is close and we were walking.  They have a decent selection of plate lunches served with rice and macaroni salad for the sides.  It was quite a bit of food, too.  My wife and I usually would just split a plate.  It is also a convenience store so we were able to pick up a few groceries at just a little higher price than at a grocer down the road.  I wouldn't go out of my way to go there, but if you are in the area, it's a good place to go.

I am originally from the islands and visit family often but usually stay further south or in Hawaii Kai area.  I'm new to these country parts but stayed recently in Punalu'u.

For the convenience and price, this was an a-ok place for a quick dinner.  But there were things that would keep me from coming back.  I was disappointed with the mochiko chicken because I was expecting exactly that--mochiko chicken.  This was chicken katsu because it was breaded and fried with panko as opposed to mochiko flour (sweet mochi rice flour).  We also got the furikake mahi which was overcooked and dried; and the shrimp scampi which again, was overcooked and a little on the tough side.

All in all, it was decent but not the five stars that everyone is giving it.

Wonderful hole-in-the-wall store. NOT a restaurant. Got the Mochico chicken and it was awesome. The value made it even better. The plate lunch came with mac salad (which i believe is mixed with tuna), rice, and a good amount of chicken. I was taking a scenic route up the east coast to north shore and i am so glad i found this place. For about $6 you get a huge lunch. There are only 2 picnic tables outside to sit at, and no seating inside. If you are driving up the highway don't stop at all the "attractive" places along the way. Make this your lunch stop and i can assure you that you wont regret it.

Stayed at a beach rental across the street from Kaya's.  Went there to grab some musubi for breakfast and we were hooked!  We had the Spam with Egg one day, went back for the terriyaki Spam the next and the chicken mocchiko.  All tasted awesome!  Much like a previous Yelp review, I tool brought some butter mochi home with me!

Yum Yum....& Yum.  Based on value, taste and location to proximity where I was staying... can't beat it for the area. Don't let the outside exterior "fool you". It's clearly a place for locals to pickup necessities, (We) had a couple orders of the furikake garlic chicken, shared a "bite" with others and EVERYONE LOVED it. Made to order... hope to go back before i get back to socal.

Food is 3 stars and the ability to buy a six pack of beer and eat outside pushes is up. If you're on your way back form North Shore, visiting Windward beaches, visiting BYU-Hawaii or the Polynesian Culture or just visiting friends and family, stop at Kaya's order some food and get your grub down.

I just submitted updated info .. mainly .. they take card and they open till 7PM. I'm not sure what time they start cooking or prepping food.

All food is made to order, the wait can be on the longer side but don't worry. She' in the kitchen cooking up a windward side storm.

    Food:

Furikake garlic chicken: tasty and one of the best seasoned and tasting I had on the island, it didn't disappoint.

Mochiko chicken: it tasted like karage chicken. Is that normal? My uncle said no.

Shrimp Scampi: shrimp was big but scampi-delicious it was not. Save your shrimp scampi order for the trucks. We had it mild (read: standard flavor) with hot sauce on the side. Hot sauce is the famous sriracha sauce.

Moco Loco: heart pounding, diabetes inducing goodness. I didn't want to eat all of this dish but i couldn't help it. It wasn't trying to award winning but something your mom, aunt, grandma or Kaya would throw together.

Order at the cash register and not in front of the kitchen!

MOCHIKO CHICKEN!!  Covered in panko flakes, fried, and topped with yummy sauce.    So good, I came back the next day.
I stayed at Pat's at Panulu'u and was surprised to see this right across the street!  The year before, my family ordered a plate lunch which was convenient since the poly cultural center doesn't open til 12 and everything is expensive anyways.  It's a good place to stop on the way there.  There are yellow picnic tables outside to eat.
The market is small, but the woman who works the register and cooks the food is really pleasant.  The macaroni salad was on point, and the dish came with of course, 2 scoops of rice.   Definitely will go back every time I go on the North Shore.

K, whatevah I say is not going do justice for how good the food is here.

Started off by snacking on the smoked marlin. I thought I was going to only have 1, but I thought wrong. I finished the whole thing while waiting for the food came out. It was seasoned in shoyu and had some chili pepper flakes on top, was just right, That in itself is 5 stars, I would drive all the way from town to buy this on a regular basis.

We ordered the furikake garlic chicken and the garlic shrimp plate. For me the garlic shrimp was okay, but then again I love my shrimp spicy. Let me tell you how good the furikake garlic chicken was, i will say this throughout the meal my wife was taking my chicken, it was that good.

This is definitely some place that I will go back to on a regular basis. Also got a lot of parking on the side of the building. 2 picnic tables and a bench on the side, and if there isn't space to eat you can always go to the beach nearby and watch the waves while enjoying your meal.
