I love their split pea soup, its so good. their frozen yogurt is never a bad choice. The owners are awesome, very nice people. Great Sandwiches, fair prices.  Had the roast beef. Good amount of meet and avocado.  Yum.  Bread is also delicious.  Owner made fresh coffee just because I ask if they had coffee.

Great sandwiches. Basic & fresh. I concur w/ other reviewers, the coconut frozen yogurt is awesome! More like frozen custard. Very dense, rich & creamy. I like coconut much better than the mocha but it's simply a matter of taste. The staff was very nice. The place is quaint but would do really well to have a paint job & remove the floral wall paper. Easy as 1-2-3 to do that. A little paint goes a long way. =)

Delicious sandwich and fruit shake! I got the turkcream on squaw bread, it was moist and yummy.  I believe it comes with turkey, light cream cheese, tomato and sprouts.  Would be nice if the place was bigger.

I've been going there since I was a kid (sneaking out of church next door to get frozen yogurt on Sunday!) and it has never disappointed.

They have the BEST coconut frozen yogurt and one of my favorite treats back in the day was to get a slice of steamy sourdough bread slathered with butter and dip it in the fro-yo. Surprisingly, I was not a morbidly obese child with a diet like that!
They also give you a ton of yogurt, so I always get a child's serving because it's plenty for me, and the small size is gargantuan!

I also LOVE their turkey sandwiches on squaw bread. So amazing! I've had their soup as well and it's always delicious.

I love this place for a nice little lunch stop.

My only suggestion to the owner: Hire a decorator. That place needs a serious facelift inside. It has the exact same decorum as when I was a child and it was outdated back in the 80's. Please slap a coat of paint on those brown walls, ditch the ancient photos and cabin knicknacks and play up the awesome wooden interior and Mexican tiles on the floor. You've got a great product and a great place to work with. The ambience in there feels like I'm eating inside of a lunch sack! But despite that....

    I LOVE THE KULTURED KITCHEN!

You want the best sammich this world has to offer? Do you believe in god? Well you will after you sink your porcelain squares into the sandwich that even Cuba gooding jr. Loves. I literally decided to take the turbocado on a romantic get away in mexico because it's so damn de-lish. I would substitute this sandwich for penicillin if I get infected by a zombie. The moist squaw bread massages my gums with every motion of jaw. Would I kill for one? The answer is yes.

if not for the serious lack of healthy restaurant options in San Clemente, I wouldn't give it such a high rating.  But San Clemente being what it is, I'm glad to have one place I can order some falafel.  The interior looks like a strip mall version of a Marie Caladers that hasn't seen an update since the 80's.  None the less, I liked the food.  I heard at least a dozen people come in after me order the trubacado or something.  So thats clearly the sandwich of sandwiches.  My children left such a mess on the floor  (they always do) and i feel much better if I pick some of it up with wipes.  Well the wipes turned black from the dirt on the floor.   But if you don't plan on paying attention to the floors they have some great healthy cuisine.

FRESH FRESH FRESH!  That's what came to mind while I was eating here.  A tiny little restaurant that is decorated like your grandmother's kitchen, the Kultured Kitchen offers tasty sandwiches, salads, and even frozen yogurt!

To eat I had the "fancy falafel" because I am indeed a fancy lady.  It was served in a pita pocket with bean sprouts, tomatoes, AVOCADO (actually guacamole, but delicious anyway), melted white cheddar, and a delicious curry mayo.  I loved every bite of it, and it didn't weigh me down.  The pita pocket could have been a little more robust; curry mayo ended up spewing out every which way.  My husband went for the "Turbacado" (turkey, bacon, avocado) on squaw bread, which was also delightful.  It seemed like every sandwich had avocado on it, which is how things should be everywhere, in my opinion.

As a bonus, they had a large collection of magazines and newspapers for customer enjoyment, so I learned details about the Bin Laden capture while I was waiting on my falafel.  I'm so kultured now!  (see what I did there?!?!?)

I had kind of high expectations for this joint (one of my best friend's had been raving about it months on end). Today, we finally went!

There were a lot of delicious sounding sandwich options, but I ended up going for the Kitchen's Favorite on squaw bread. SO good! The bread was so soft & fresh, plus there was mayo, bacon bits, sprouts, tomato and low-fat cottage cheese....mmm. The menu also said avocado, but it turned out to be guacamole...also good, but I prefer sliced avacado on my sammiches, personally.

I opted for a side salad as well with the herb dressing instead of the blue cheese. Although it was just iceberg lettuce, they did add sprouts, tomato, cucumber and carrots. Plus, the herb dressing was very tasty! It had sesame seeds in it and tasted homemade.

As other people have said this place could do with a makeover -- it's nothing especially pretty to look at and is in need of some TLC. That being said, it does have a kind of mom-n-pop vibe and there was more than enough space to accomodate the handful of people there. I think it was the owners who helped us and made the food today, so they were polite but couldn't seem to recommend one sandwich over the other when we were trying to decide.

I will definitely go back to try some of the other sandwiches, but I wouldn't bring someone here for say a romantic date night. (:

Here's another place everyone just raves about in San Clemente. I've given it a try 3 times now. And tried 3 different things just in case it was an off day! Nope the truth is this place sux! The place is dirty and old and the food is slapped together. Very messy. The sandwiches just suck! I don't know how anyone can eat there!

    Turkeybacado!

Turkey sandwich on wheat bread with tomatoes and sprouts.  Also a very generous heap of avocado (guac) with tiny bacon pieces mixed in.  NOT bacon bits...but bits of bacon.  There is a difference.  :)

This hidden place is a gem! I come her for one sandwich only...the Mushroom Melt. The flavors explode in your mouth. If you love garlic, then try this! It's a hot sandwich that comes with lettuce, tomato, and cheese. They top it off with their special aoli sauce that keeps you licking your fingers after you've cleaned your plate. When you're all done, get some dessert! Can I suggest their homemade coconut frozen yogurt. It leaves you with a refreshed feeling of satisfaction.

unfortunately my experience entailed funky food and pretty rude servers.

i came here with fairly high hopes based on all the great reviews and left here quite disappointed.  the vegetarian sandwich i ordered came stuffed with lots of vegetables, cheese, and also cottage cheese.  i thought why not be adventurous -- bad idea.  the cottage cheese was sickeningly salty and, and there was this funky sweet sauce on the bread -- YUCK.  my companion commented that his tuna sandwich had a funky sweet sauce on it too, and he could barely choke it down.

another annoying thing is that they put bacon bits on a total classic vegetarian sandwich (sprouts, avocado, tomato, lettuce, etc -- you get the point).  WHY?  this place seriously needs to revamp their menu.  i'm giving them +1 star for at least attempting to offer some veg options, as unpalatable as they are.  i would recommend skipping this place and going to captain mauri's instead.

    The Kultured Kitchen Rocks!!

I don't live anywhere close to the area. I was introduced to this local joint while out for lunch visiting a business associate at their nearby office. It's a cute little place that is due for a makeover. My associate mentioned that it looks just like how it did when he was in high school (not that he's old, but that's a good 20+ years or so).

Sandwich time: I always tend to get their falafel sandwich. The falafel itself isn't crispy or seasoned well, but for some reason I keep getting it (go figure). I suppose it's different and that's why I come back for more. Their tuna, turkey, ham, roast beef, and all their other sandwiches they serve are fairly good. Portions are a good size.

    Highlights & Low-lights:

    *Parking lot is tiny
    *Super outdated decor
*Service is okay & fairly speedy if there isn't a long line
*Usually one or two people behind the counter
    *Sandwiches are fairly good
    *Great daily specials
*Side options include: soup of the day, yogurt, & salad
*Only two dressings to choose from: Blue Cheese or Herb Dressings
    *Both dressings are very good!!!
*The yogurt is delish but they only serve 3-4 flavors at a time

Even though I give this place 3 stars for the entire experience- I will still visit and recommend this place if I'm in the neighborhood!

Great location with ample parking in a quiet tree-lined little part of Capo Beach. So why only 2 stars?..........................the staff.
These girls could care less about customer service - and I have been in several different times. each time I leave asking myself - where is the owner? Don't they train these girls?
Outside of that, just a boring selection of bland sandwiches and soup. People just go out of habit, because it's easy, fast and in the neighbourhood.

The yogurt?  Excellent.  Huge servings.  The coconut flavor is the best I have ever had.  Unfortunately, they usually only have 3-4 flavors at a time, though all are good.

The sandwiches?  Mediocre.  I like that they have squaw bread which is hard to find, but they won't toast it.  Toppings and meat are just average.

The vegetarian chili, however, is great.  The only problem is that they heat it up in styrofoam containers...not so good.  Your best bet is to buy a quart frozen/cold, take it home and heat it up yourself in a non-styrofoam container.

Overall, come for the yogurt....that's about it.

It doesn't matter where I've  lived in orange county, over the last two years I've always driven out of my way to stop and grab lunch - or just frozen yogurt from kultured kitchen.

Its been a staple eatery since childhood. I grew up down the street, had friends work there and every now and again will call up just to see what the "mystery" flavor of froyo is for the day.  Always running are four machines; one with coconut (the local favorite), mocha, raspberry and then one ever changing flavor, my favorite being peach, black cherry, cookies and cream or mint.

The sandwiches are alright. Casual cold cut sandwiches done with a twist. The price is right... the atmosphere is casual yet friendly. If you go, try my favorite: roast beef melt (squaw roll with roast beef, swiss, avocado, tomato and sprouts toasted in the oven. Oh and don't forget the yogurt ;)

They have good sandwiches, but it's not anything that you couldn't make at home with a couple slices of bread and some cold cuts. Certainly overpriced for just a regular sandwich.

The real golden find here is that they have a huge serving of frozen yogurt for fairly cheap. There are only 4 flavors available at a time, but they usually are pretty good choices. It's a better deal than Golden Spoon, so if you want a huge froyo for cheap, stop by this place.

So my fiancee has been going to Kultured Kitchen since she was in pre-school. She introduced me to this San Clemente classic in 2003. It has become one of the staple meals that I have to have when we come to visit her family. My favorite: Turbacado (turkey, sprouts, avacado with bacon bits, cheese and mayo) on squaw bread. If you splurge and get the frozen yogurt as well I would recommend getting a small, they load it up so you definitely get your money's worth. They do have a daily special that gets you a half a sandwich and either soup or yogurt for a very reasonable price. Very fresh and deliciously Californian this is a must if you're in the area.

My friend and I got hungry on the drive down to San Diego. So we took a chance and exited Camino de Estrellas, hoping to find something. We saw Kultured Kitchen and decided to give it a try. They have really delicious, homemade sandwiches and yummy frozen yogurt. I really like their Cream and Cow, which is a roast beef sandwich with sprouts, tomato, and cream cheese instead of mayo. YUM! Definitely worth checking out!
