Pretty good!! Â If I could I would go with a 3 1/2...for this area its about the best your going to get when it comes to traditional mexican but definately far from the best Mexican I have had (it being my favorite type of food i have eaten at ALOT of places). I got the Fajitas which they made using pam instead of butter or oil (at my request) which most places wont do so that made me very happy! Â The beans were great. Â The salsa tasted a little too sweet and like they used canned tomato sauce. Â My cousins with me got the Portabella mushroom quesadilla, the chicken with green peppers quesadilla and the Chicken taco salad. Â They were HUGE portions and delishous. Â We all left satisfied. Â If I'm craving mexican again and am in this area this restraunt or La Casa De Isaac would be my choice but I won't be making a special tryip.
Review Source:I go to the North Shore about as often as I watch the Lifetime Network, (occasionally I enjoy a good cry and ice cream night) so I had no idea what to expect about any restaurant in Highland Park...let alone a Mexican one. This place was actually pretty darn good though.
The complimentary chips and salsa were the most memorable with some seriously spicy red sauce. If I lived closer I could definitely see grabbing a few beers and filling up on these alone. The main courses were tasty as well with lots of fish taco options. I had the salmon mole ones which we're excellent although a bit pricey for the portion.
Overall it was much better than I expected for a Mexican meal in the burbs. If you find yourself up in this neck of the woods it's worth a stop in.
Honestly? I'm stuck between a three-star rating and a four-star rating. I rounded up!
I came here for a lunch meeting and ordered the burrito sampler special with chorizo. Wow, what a fabulous presentation of food on my plate! And on all the plates of my dining partners too! However, I have to say my food was surprisingly a little on the cold side. My dining partner suggested I send it back to be reheated, but I was in a bit of a hurry knowing I had another meeting to run to and somehow food doesn't taste the same once it's heated a second time. Had it been warmer, I might have enjoyed it more, but regardless my burrito was packed with flavor. Even better, what I appreciated about the food is that it was tremendously fresh tasting and not greasy...at all! I didn't leave with that "I ate waaaay too much Mexican food feeling."
Service was A-OK. I personally thought it took a bit to get someone to take our order, and I had to let someone know we were ready. Had I not been in a bit of a rush, perhaps I wouldn't have even noticed. So, I didn't let that aspect influence my review. I will say when we were served, the service was top notch. Hands on when it made sense, and hands off so we could talk.
Parking...yikes! Came in at 12:30pm and there wasn't a spot to be found. I was able to park in the street right out front...so that wasn't so awful.
My plan next time is to order breakfast. It's served for lunch, and the reviews say get the eggs. So I plan to do that.
Both vegetarian and meat options in case you're wondering!
The vegetarian enchiladas were absolutely fantastic! Great atmosphere, helpful and attentive staff... My only prob wi this place is (no joke) we have gone here 5 times... It was open one out of those five times. Â It's not like we show up at off hour times, this place has crazy stupid hours... Not open on Fridays = Ridiculous. It has me searching for a better, more reliably open mexican restaurant in the area.
Review Source:So-so food that is quite overpriced, even for the area. Lovely ambiance, and good service, but disappointing quality of food and beverage. The food was bland, even when hot sauce was added. Uninteresting menu and I'm sorry to say that I won't return. I was hoping for something exotic for the prices, but I've had much better and more authentic food in Wheeling and Chicago.
Review Source:Came here for my work holiday party, in which they reserved the private room in the back. That was nice, the rest of it was just okay. The best part of the night were the chips and salsa which were crispy, fresh and the salsa spicy and not too thick, just the way I like it. The service was also good, all the guys were running around to accommodate all the north shore agents and even Isaac himself made an appearance to make sure everything was going well. So they get a star for service, a star for ambiance and a star for the chips and salsa. The rest of the experience was oh so a okay.
I tried the margarita because that's one of my favorite drinks period and there's was wayyy too strong. It was a fiesta in your mouth in like 2 seconds because it felt like drinking straight up tequila which in a way you get your money's worth but be careful because one will get you tipsy. Now onto the food, they had duck empanadas which were okay, a tad on the bland side, and the rest was buffet style but all so mediocre. I tried the chicken fajitas, a little dry, guacamole was lacking salt and lime and the rice was just flat. So in the end of the day it was a fun time but the food was definitely not the best I've had. Maybe I can come here next time just for chips and salsa and straight up patron shots, that shall call for a great time. And they are kosher if you ever thought there wasn't mexican kosher in the north shore, you were wrong.
Heard about this place for awhile, finally tried it with another couple. Â Food was good, nothing exceptional. Ordered a rum gimlet and was brought a glass of rum, and a second half glass of lime juice. I was told they didn't know what I wanted. Really? Â Now adays, you can't find that info out in 2 minutes? Â Anyway, the only complaint was their banana dessert. It was plantain, which by itself isn't bad, but not what is on the menu. Ere was no taste and very starchy. The waiter explained that "they were like bananas". Don't know what the fuss is all about except, they open at 7:00 on Saturday nights.
Review Source:I really like this place.  It 's the brother restaurant to La Casa de Isaac in Highwood, literally.  Isaac and Moishe are brothers.  This was my first visit to Isaac and Moishe's  but I have been to La casa de Isaac often.  The menus are the pretty much the same.  In fact I didn't see any difference at all.  This is a larger space though.
We went to enjoy the special that they had for Highland Park's restaurant week. Â I really appreciated that they provided us with the restaurant week menu when we sat down (without us having to request it). Â All the other places that I frequented for restaurant week, I had to ask what the specials were, making it just a little uncomfortable.
So for $44 you were entitled to one large appetizer platter (and it was huge!), two entrees and two drinks.  The appetizer platter was excellent.  For our entrees both my husband and I had the Tampiqueña - very good.  Our dining companions had one order of the Salmon goat cheese burrito plate  - they said not enough goat cheese and one order of the Isaacs Mother's favorite enchiladas - they didn't love the salad on top, but I have had this dish on many occasions and love it just the way they do it.  So each to their own, I guess.
Our service was friendly and professional. Â I am certain that I will return.
Came here with my favorite eating buddy (now to be referred to as EB) to satisfy a mexican craving. Â I liked their chips and salsa. The only problem is I eat too much of it.
I ordered the Molkajete off the specials menu, which is automatically cooler because they spell it with a "k". The portion is large and could actually feed 2 (which makes the $22 price tag more acceptable), but the chihuahua cheese made it too salty. I bogarted some of EB's avocado and instantly made it better. Moral of the story is always order a side of avocado, no matter where you are.
Try not to be disappointed when you don't see much pork on the menu. After all, this is Highland Park, the land of the Jewish. There's no al pastor, but they do have chorizo. And chorizo is awesome.
Fun Tidbit: EB has a well-known love affair with french fries and will order them wherever we go, good or bad. So of course, he had to get the "hand-cut fries" on the menu. Â While the "hand cut" was questionable, they were actually nicely fried steak fries. Oh and they're served up with a sauce. It's red and definitely had honey in it, but that's all I could figure out. However, it was oddly addicting.
Wow!! Went with my wife and four friends. All of us had what we called the best Mexican food this side of the Rio Grande. What flavor, what taste, what a meal. Mama's best enchiladas, steak fajitas, and a little of this and a little of that. Our host was the nicest man you'd ever want to meet. His name was Miguel, and all I can say is thank you for treating us so kindly.
Review Source:If you can wait until 9 AM weekdays or 8 AM Sunday (closed Saturday), this is a great Mexican breakfast.
Amen to the other positive reviews here. But I think their breakfast should receive some exclusive cheers. Fresh squeezed OJ and hint-of-cinnamon coffee merely signal the food distinction. Come here for a traditional deli style breakfast of blintzes or lox plate, but don't miss the chilaquiles, spartan omelet or Skillet fajita. Enough that we took most everything home and enjoyed it again the next day.
The day after Christmas, I took a lady friend for breakfast at Isaac & Moishe's Restaurant on First St. in Highland Park. (Note: They've moved their opeining time from 7 am to 9 am Mon through Fri. and 8 am on Sundays. They open on Saturdays one hour after sundown.)
One of the best kept secrets in Highland Park is that they offer a "build your own" omelet for only $4.95. For this price, you get your choice of three ingredients plus rice and beans or hash brown potatoes or fruit. I can't think of any restaurant anywhere that offers such a great deal. And it's available all day long. Note that the build your own omelet is only availabe at their First St. location.
WOW!  I hosted a holiday breakfast party for my employees.  Isaac , Moishe and company laid out a beautiful spread of delicious foods including several  breakfast dishes, Mom's favorite enchiladas, fruit, bagels, sweets, and drinks.  The food was awesome and the service spectacular.  My employees are primarily Hispanic and they could not stop raving about the food.  That says a lot for a Mexican Restaurant.  This was our most successful holiday party ever.
Review Source:Another great restaurant from the Nava family!
This is as good as the original Casa de Isaac, but in a bigger, more open space. It still gets crowded, but you don't have to wait as long as in the Highwood location.
Best chips & salsa around, awesome margaritas and amazing food. You can't go wrong here!
great place
great service
spotless so clean
Issac the owner is the greatest,a wonderful man and business man
will make sure you are happy every time
and tell him Nancy said to come
he and his family come from a small town in Mexico
a Jewish community
Issac is a mensch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
don't miss it
Delicious food, less pricey than their Highwood counterpart and with a more diverse menu. Very good Mexican food - their special entrees are a little pricey but you can always get the tradtional taco/burrito plates at a very reasonable price. Love the margaritas, yummmm...plus I don't know anywhere else in the area you can get a Don Julio margarita for $9. Love the interior, really cute decor and they do have outdoor seating.
Would highly recommend coming here for breakfast - they have awesome and creative omelettes for a very reasonable price.
YUM!
5 stars for the food, 3-4 for price and service. Â the interior is beautiful and the food is much better and upscale than la casa de issac. Â the price was pretty steep for mexican food but it has great quality and there is enough for dinner and leftovers, without a doubt. Â our waitress, however, i wasn't fond of. Â she started off with a freudian slip, welcoming us to another mexican restaurant in town - woops! Â she wasn't exactly attentive, and we waited at least 10 minutes to get our check after having had our food boxed up, in which we had to flag down a different waitress for. Â the worst part of it was when she was serving my food she kinda tipped the plate a bit and some of the scalding hot sauce went straight to my hand. Â an honest error, but i really hope that doesn't happen often.
the chips and salsa were delicious. Â my margarita was fresh and yummy, not too sweet. Â i had the huachanaga veracruza which was VERY fresh, light, and meshed well with all the flavors on the plate - cooked perfectly, as well. Â you have the option to have it whole, which is a nice touch - just not my style. Â my guy had the filet mignon fajitas which i am pretty sure he said were some of the best ever - he said the beef wasn't chewy or tough in the slightest. Â the rice was so-so. Â overall though, the entrees were great and i can't wait to eat my leftovers!
This has got to be my favorite Mexican restaurant of all time ! When I am home from college for the breaks or the summer my whole family knows that I want to go to Isaac & Moishe for dinner. There food is to die for! When you sit down they put some fresh and hot tortilla chips on your table with a really good spicy salsa. In addition, my family and I always pay about a dollar extra to get their homemade guacamole which is out of this world!!! As far as entrees go, Isaac & Moishe give you generous portions. One of my favorite entrees that I order is the Salmon and Goat Cheese burrito. It is so yummy! Even if you are not a fan of Mexican food there is something on the menu that you will enjoy.
Review Source:Isaac and Moishe have another winner. Â Like the original location in Highwood (yes, I know, it's a Highland Park address--BUT it's in Highwood) the food is fresh and flavorful. Â Very, very good restaurant.
They have a slightly different menu than the original, with more breakfast options. Â The location is bigger, and has a nicer outdoor eating area. Â They can also accommodate parties. Â
The vegi burritos are great (add guac). Â Enchiladas with green or mole are outstanding. Â My wife always rates Mexican restaurants by the beans and rice, thus the 5 star. Â Try the quasidalla, too.
The other thing I like is that they honor their religion, and close Friday afternoon, reopening Saturday after sundown. Â To me that is dedication to the right things. Â While I am not Jewish, it is very cool that the brothers make this decision on their beliefs, and not their pocketbooks.
Hidden gem on the north shore for breakfast. Jewish-Mexican fare includes everything from chorizo & eggs to matzoh brie with salami. Mexican coffee with cinnamon is great! Nova onion omelet "scramble-style" is 2-die-4 Â (hint onions well browned). Friendly & attentive owner & staff, with free wifi as a nice touch.
Review Source:Unlike the average american Mexican joint, Isaac & Moishe manages to provide high quality ingredients prepared with precision. Â Nothing sloppy or thrown together randomly here, like the usual tortilla + tub of ground beef + glop of cheese = dinner. Â Even the chips and salsa are fresh made with care. Â As you would expect, "Mother's Favorite" enchiladas are a stand-out (3 chicken enchiladas with a green tomatillo sauce, sour cream, avocado, and secret magic). Â My wife enjoys plenty of vegetarian options, with the cheese enchiladas, rice, and beans all hitting the spot. Â The price is higher than your random chimichanga and margarita joint, but then velveeta is cheaper than brie.
While we love the Highwood Casa de Isaac, the option for breakfast and brunch sets this one apart - chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, breakfast burritos, but also elegant omelettes and french toast options. Â Better parking situation, more spacious and just an easier overall experience.
Love La Casa de Isaac in Highwood, but don't like being so "up close and personal" with the neighboring tables? Â This is the place for you. Â Same great food including fajitas and salmon enchiladas to die for. Â same friendly service. Â Much more spacious room. Yes, it's a bit more expensive than other Mexican restaurants, but the food and drinks are so much better that it's worth the additional price.
Review Source:YUM! Â No surprises here if you are a fan of La Casa de Isaac, you will be an even bigger fan of Isaac and Moishe's. Â This is just a larger, nicer version of what you get at La Casa. Â This place is more than twice the size of the other. Â Tables are nicer (they have some round tables for larger parties, big plus), further apart and chairs are much more comfortable. Â Menu is the same. Â Mama's enchiladas, yum, taco plate, yum and the skirt steak, also yum! Â The topper of the whole experience is Isaac and Moishe. Â They are two of the nicest hard working guys in the restaurant business and they deserve all the success they receive. Â I cannot wait to go back for my Mexican fix and hopefully, sit out side in their side patio.
Review Source:This is a great place to go with a friend or a group. Food and drinks are all fresh and delicious; Â service is superb. Â This fabulous restaurant is in a building where another Mexican restaurant was once located, but this food is so far superior that there is no comparison. Â Portions are large; Â lunch is more reasonable than dinner, but both are have a variety of dishes at various prices. Â It's a staple on our list now.
