ALRIGHT- I really want and pretty much like this place but last night we had a pretty baffling experience with our waitress. Here is what went down...
We sat and she was quick to come over and ask our drink order. I asked what they had on tap because I couldn't see it from our seat. She said she didn't know and couldn't see them either. OK, well not a big deal I'll get up and check it out. She took our order and came back to ask again because she couldn't remember the beer we ordered.
Next we ordered a burger to share with a side salad. A COLFAX burger. She asked us " The Blue Burger?" no - the COLFAX burger we repeated. "oh, ok". Burger comes out and we look at it - doesn't look like the right cheese but we try it. NOPE - Blue cheese. Wrong burger. Not a big deal and I don't like to complain but I don't like Blue cheese. So when she finally came by and asked if everything was ok we told her that at this point we don't want another burger but it was a blue cheese burger and I wasn't going to eat my half because I don't like it. She stated and this is the whole kicker in this story - " Oh, well once you get your bill you will see it says Colfax burger" ummm what??? Does that make it one then?? We were more than ready to close out our tap and sit at the bar so we did and it clearly stated Blue burger on the bill so we brought it up thinking they might comp us for the wrong burger that i wouldn't eat - but no, she just spent 10 minutes at the computer trying to correct the ticket. What good does that do???
Anyways - I would like to return but I'll be making sure I'm not in her section!
We got our food "to go" since our office building is nearby. It's basic bar-food with a couple of "fun" items. For example, they have a Chicken & Waffle sandwich with a maple aioli. I didn't opt for that, just a Bleu Burger and it was A-OK.
This place is fine when I can't get out for lunch and need something to go. But nothing to go out of my way for.
Service - well not sure if it exists. I never found it for the three hours we stayed there. I sat for over twenty minuets before I finally gave up and went to the bar. I ordered my drink and was in utter shock when I was brought my bill and asked to pay before I ever saw my drink. So when i finally received my purchased drink i joined with friends on the patio as they were trying and I Stress TRYING to order food. When they finally gained the attention of a staff member letting them know they would like to order food. So that staff member sent out another to take the order. The woman came out checked on every table asking "did you ask for me?". Well if your our server then yes we did. She proceeded to take the order and returned in 2 minuets with their bill. Really?
I have never been to a supposedly full service restaurant and bar and been expected to pay for something I haven't tasted or put my lips on.
This place used to be great....what happened? I was so hopeful that new owners would be a positive change.
I tried the Hellfire burger several weeks ago and it is STILL the best burger I have EVER had. Â I have since tried several other meals and have not eaten anything that does not taste great. Â My last visit only affirms that their food is consistently great. Â I asked the server if I could try the chicken sandwich as the Hellfire burger. Â Without thinking twice she offered me different options in designing my meal. Â Some places do not allow their patrons to alter the menu items, not here, she offered different possibilities. Â Needless to say the chicken sandwhich was also AMAZING. Â I ended up ordering the Hellfire buger and just replaced the beef with a piece of grilled chicken. Â WOW! Â Now this place also has the best grilled chicken sandwhich!!
Additionally, there was a time I was in the restaurant and the music was just a little too loud (I was also sitting right below a speaker that I did not notice) so I asked if they could turn it down a bit and without even flinching, the staff turned it down.
This is a great place, wife and kids love it!!
Just for starters I would have to agree with most of the negative statements about this local bar 6 months ago, but I have been here several times since the change of ownership on the word of mouth of a few real good friends. This place has turned into a diamond in the rough, it's now clean repainted and has several up to date TVs hanging on the wall now. Â The best part is the food! Â Wow I have had several different items from the amazing burgers to the street tacos (steak tacos). The service is great and the beer is cold! Â They have several old school arcade games, pinball and pool tables in the back. Â Great hang out. Close to home, my new spot again.
**Edit** Went back today 6/5/12 for lunch and the Green Chili is AMAZING!
We stopped at the Lakewood Grill with three starving kids not really knowing what to expect. Â What we got was the BEST burger I have ever had! Â The Hellfire burger says it is HOT!!..an it delivers!! Dont expect some wimpy version of taste (the wings too!)! Â
We have been back 4 times since and each time it has been consistantly the best burger ever! Â I would also highly recommend both the steak tacos and cajun chicken sandwich. Â
I also have to mention how much my kids (ages 5-10) enjoyed this place. Â They all ate amazingly and had a great time playing games. Â I know at first glance it would appear not "kid friendly" but it surely is. Â All my kids have wanted to go back there to eat again!
Thank goodness this place got new owners. My wife and I stopped into TLG and had the worst patty melt and Monte Cristo sandwich when the old group owned the bar. The new owner said that they are planning on changing their menu and using all fresh never frozen ingrediants. He asked us to come back after the new menus were done and see if we liked the new food. So I did just that and I gave them another chance. And thank goodness I did. The food here is now amazing. I had the Fifty Fifty burger, which is a combo of ground beef and bacon. This burger is absolutely delicious and melted in my mouth with every bite. It was juicy, filling and priced perfectly. Even the bun was delicious, it had a buttery glaze on the outside that made the burger look perfect. I will be going back to try some of the new meals. GREAT JOB!
Review Source:Amazing how a place can go so bad so quickly. I used to enjoy having lunch and a beer at this bar. Now the menu is decimated and the place looks like the K-Mart version of the Skylark Lounge. I probably won't be going back, which is a shame as I used to eat and get afternoon drinks here a lot.
Review Source:Bummer, man.
I was at Lakewood Grill probably three weeks ago and the burgers and fries were very, very good, I was impressed. Because I'm fair, I was going to update my old review (which got only one star due to TRULY bad service by a bartender named Mark) with four stars because the food was so great.
HOWEVER, we went back this weekend and I guess now there's new ownership? There's *definitely* a new menu, about a third the size of the old menu, and no more fries. We tried the "fifty-fifty" burger which is supposed to have ground bacon in it, but it was nothing like the burgers of just three weeks earlier. Â Dry, smaller, not very noteworthy. Â
Additionally and again -- the fries are gone. Â What? Â A burger needs fries, they need to bring those back, STAT. Â Instead they now serve chips, but the chips weren't even cooked all the way -- rubbery and cold in the middle. Â I was sorely disappointed all the way around.
Except for the service. The last few times I've been to TLG the service has been really great. Attentive waitresses, good bartenders, definitely decent drinks. That hasn't changed and for that reason alone we'll try this place again.
But please PLEASE work on your menu, folks. Â You need fries and onion rings and your burgers need to be bigger, juicier and ... like the burgers we had three weeks ago. The new menu is cool looking and all, but if the food can't back it up, what's the point?
I'll try again soon...if the food is improved I'll update ... AGAIN.
Wow, I was just checking out my local places and saw that review from Crys - OMG! 2 reviews bashing Mark? That seems like someone's got an axe to grind. LOL!
I've been a regular at LBG for a 3-4 years and find the place fun and relaxing. I like the blue-collar atmosphere and the affordable drinks - you don't have to be anything but yourself and I like that. It's a good neighborhood bar with great live music on Fridays and the best karaoke on Saturdays with Violet.
But with Mark - I can see maybe if at first someone judged him because of his rings and his buzzcut...but I've gotten to know him and he is an awesome person and a top-notch bartender with lots of experience. I've seen him run a very busy house himself and doing it effortlessly. He is so kind to me and my hubby, and is always ready with a joke or a funny story just like any good bartender is. The only time I see him get wound up is if some drunk punks come in, or if guys are behaving badly. Then I'm glad he takes charge of the situation! That's *also* what a good bartender (especially on Colfax!) will do because in this place it's like a box of chocolates - you never know on any given day/night what you're going to get.
Recently I lost my job and he was very encouraging and told me everything would work out - and spent extra time making sure we were taken care of that night. That was really thoughtful and it helped, bigtime.
I can say honestly sometimes we stop in just to see Mark. I've also seen nights where he's started working pick up. I have NO idea where this Crys person got this idea about Mark from - maybe they were the ones behaving badly? I see him interact with people at the bar all the time and he's nice and respectful to people. I have no idea who this Crys is...?
So just a word about the grill and social media is great and all but sometimes you just get 1 nutty person calling out someone - that's not cool. Â
LBG'ers,
Deanna & Erik
My boyfriend and I go here for pinball. The staff is always accommodating, it's never too crowded (on the off nights we go), the drinks are cheap, the food is what would be expected and the pinball games are CLEAN, well kept and awesome! The current pins are Medieval Madness, Twilight Zone, Spider-man (limited edition) , Banzai Run, Dirty Harry, and Pirates of the Caribbean- all great games. To my surprise and disappointment Tales of the Arabian Nights was there the first time I went to play but not now- knowing what a tough game this is to upkeep I completely understand but I definitely miss it. Â
Lakewood Bar and Grill is great in my book. PS I LOVE their smoking patio- it's huge, covered AND open (to block out Colfax) and generally entertaining.
Let me just say that this place had a good start with the remodel  but then just sucks now. I am not sure who gave the food here 4 starts what they are used to, but they could at least hire a cook that can make a grilled cheese. Our food came out in less than 1 minute. The grilled cheese was cold and looked like it had been tossed in a microwave for 30 seconds and thrown on a plate to sit for the other 30 seconds. Then after complaining to the bar tender who is the manager he was quite the jerk instead of having a word with the kitchen he was like, it looks fine to me. So instead of argue with him we paid our $7 dollars for old prepared food and a nuked piece of bread with some cheese thrown in the middle.  NOTE TO OWNER:: HIRE A FREAKIN COOK THAT CAN MAKE A GRILLED CHEESE, I MEAN REALLY YOU HAVE A REALLY NICE KITCHEN, WHAT GIVES....and tell the manager to actually have some customer service. I mean this place is dead during the week, the manager probably ran off all the locals, the only thing left to bring money and people into this place is bands and the apartments, so maybe the owner does not give a hoot about the bar!!!! If you can stand all of this and just pop in for a cheap PBR and some pinball you might be able to avoid the nonsense!
Review Source:It's a dive bar so I wasn't expecting much but I was wicked surprised with what I got. $2 PBR tap was nice. But what blew me away was the Reuben. It is the first Reuben that I've gotten west of the Mississippi that actually tasted really good. Most out here are either tasteless or super salty, but this was really good. As were the fries, which were just the right crispness. The pickle, meh. Sysco brand (you know, the big tractor trailers with the trailer that is made out of nice unpainted shiny aluminum that blinds you when the sun hits them. They supply most schools). Everything was fairly clean and presentable. All in all, not that bad if you don't expect much.
Review Source:Four stars for the bar and two stars for the food. Â This is a spacious bar with some pretty good drink specials. Â They offer live music a few nights a week and several pinball machines. Â We decided to try the food here and were pretty disappointed. Â Here's what we tried:
Cheese Sticks = Typical fried sticks of battered cheese (probably from Sysco) The tomato sauce for dipping them tasted good
House Salad = Pale lettuce and tomatoes topped with shredded cheese and an okay bleu cheese dressing
Fish Sandwich = Hockey puck shell with fish inside
Fries = Great! Â These were perfectly crispy, yay finally something good!
Monte Cristo = Not deep fried, possibly pan fried at an earlier date and then nuked and served to us as an edible replacement for the hockey puck
Chillies Rellenos = Pretty good but not very spicy
All I can recommend is the fries. Â Our server did a nice job and the bartender was friendly as well. Â Next time we'll give the pizza a try and hope its better than the other food.
3 stars is for the prices.
The service was great. I was apprehensive about what I wanted and the tender let me sample a few beers before I decided on ol' standby PBR.
We also got 2 chocolate cake shots which were $7 a piece. Ouch!
It's good people watching, lots of bikers and sleazy pinball games. There was a live band. No shuffleboard though. What gives?
Sunday Feb 7, 2009. Â 11AM
I walk in with my GF to the the only open booth that has yet to be cleaned. Â After I picked the menus up from the floor, the obese, tootless-meth riddled waitress exclaims, "YOU'RE GONNA HAVE TO WAIT FOR ME TO GET A TOWEL TO WIPE OF THAT TABLE!"
Fine by me, figured it was on it's way, no problems as long as I get my Postman breakfast in a little bit.
I scrapped some crumbs away from me with the menu & she then gets on my case, stating, "See now my menus are dirty too!"
Apparently they still had sparkle after I picked them up off the floor. Â I told this bitch to shove it & we took our business to the Chuckwagon.
It is a shame that just about every waitress on Colfax looks like she moonlights as a crackwhore.
I've visited here through a few owners, and I admire what the present owner has done.
new floors, rebuilt backbar and heated patio, and created a good staff.
there is severe personality going on here; waitresses are solid and have their own style; the I see regulars pick and choose the servers that are tailored to their needs.
the bartenders all have their style as well. Â the daytime barmaid is funny, attentive, and beautiful. Â yet I've seen her kick the drunken ass out with sharp venom. Â don't mess with her.
what I'm here to say, though, is that the food is great. Â there are specials every day; I've had $.25 wings, $1 tacos, $10 prime rib, and really great pizza. Â I mean really great pizza.
so when you find yourself needing a Wal-mart trip, go to Colfax and Wadsworth and make sure you stop by, 4 blocks west on Colfax, and get a drink and some food. Â you'll be glad you did.
I liked the way the waitress said, "Sorry" before every utterance.
I liked the way the band never showed up: I want that job.
I like the hole in our table, top to bottom: a place for crumbs to fall.
I liked the line I heard one guy use,
"Hey, if you girls want, I could give you my number."
Man rush of giggling.
"You know, I'm not kidding."
I liked the vegetable plate, great gluten-free selection: boring but adequate.
I liked the piece of dead celery on our vegetable plate, made other veggies look better.
I liked the huge servings, the burrito was as big as the plate.
I liked that the waitress got our order wrong and forgot to say 'sorry' for that.
I liked the truly-amazingly-low prices.
I liked the way the benches around the booth kept you from slouching.
I liked that the waitress found a man to chat up rather than serve our drinks.
I like that this place isn't too close to home: we'll return, maybe one day when the music is in more of a music mood.
