Great pub. Â Have passed this place a few times, but this time we listened to our curiosity, and it was a great thing. Â Looks bigger inside than outside. Â Our table was in a comfortable corner, a bit cozy. Â The cloudy wet weather was a fitting backdrop for this english pub. Â The Smithwicks off the tap was a perfect break from christmas shopping. Â The roast beef sandwich was slabbed with warm thick slices of roastbeef, horseradish sauce on moist pretzel bread - just awesome. Â She had the reuben with just the right amount of savory and sour. Â
Also nice to find a place that keeps it classy.
Okay....location, location, LOCATION!!!
Woah, what a difference a few miles north makes... or south for that matter! I had my usual chicken with mac/cheese and mushrooms....pretty basic... so why did it all taste like crap?
The waitress forgot our drinks, then our appetizer (she was trying to be cute and not write our order down). My friend got a sandwich and specifically said twice "no tomatoes" guess what was on her sandwich...yup. The waitress copped major attitude when I asked about the appetizer and claimed we didn't order one...in the holiday spirit I let her have that one.
Won't be back. Will stick to Broadway or Blanco from here on out!
The service was wonderful, but the food being sent out has no quality control. Â Someone in their kitchen on 12/08/2012 lunch service, served a Chicken Pot Pie that was made with horrendously dry chicken, and No sauce. Â It was cold in the center. Â Also, the Chicken Stew, which the chicken was also dry, when you could find it! Â There is no excuse for serving customers extremely dry chicken in their dishes. Â I watched the online video and how they expressed how important quality in their dishes was expected. Â The owner's need to revisit this establishment, not for the service but the kitchen's chef.
Review Source:I came here on invitation to a friends party. The atmosphere was ok..wasn't my scene really though. The pub was spacious & clean. The waitresses was nice & barely dressed..Lol!!! I had good service. I ordered the Greek salad with chicken. That was the best Greek salad I have eaten in a while. Big serving, fresh veggies, and the dressing on the side. Everyone else ordered fish & chips, grilled cheese sandwiches, or Mac n cheese...it looked and smelled delicious. They had karaoke their that night (Sat) ...that's always a plus. Also a plus is the outside patio people can smoke..therefore you don't have to worry about smelling like cigarettes while inside.
Review Source:I like Lion & Rose for their food and kitschy (sp?) atmoshpere. The food is always good (my favorite place for fish & chips), and the waitstaff is very nice, every single time.
I love that after my meal, I can take my drink out to the patio and smoke - that's always a plus, and I appreciate that they allow it.
The only reason I didn't give them the extra star is that last time I was there with a friend, our waitress happened to be a classmate of my friend's son. Who is in high school. Forgive me if this sounds prudish, but I find it irresponsible and kind of sick that the management insists on girls wearing skirts that BARELY cover their butts. Especially if they're hiring minors to work there. Give them an option, L & R. Really. I'd be pissed if that was my kid having to wear what is essentially a Britney Spears costume to wait tables.
Other than that, good food, good atmosphere. Just cover up your staff a little better, guys. This isn't a strip club.
Upon entering - Â It has plenty of seating, as well as a separate room for parties and special gatherings. Lots of plush booths, and seats at the bar, with plenty of television screens to catch all the sports action being displayed. 9/10
Service - You're welcomed as soon as you walk in the door, and invited to sit anywhere you choose. Did I mention that the waitresses here were photogenic? As I'm a married man, I decided against such action, but you can always check their website, or simply visit here yourself to enjoy the scenery. I know I did! 10/10
The food - Having visited this location many times, I know that their quality is one reason they are so popular. They have a great selection to choose from, the fish and chips, shepherd's pie, and bangers and mash are always good. Be sure to order some bubble and squeak! 9/10
Value for money - Sure, you could spend less elsewhere, but would you get as much value? The scenery itself is worth the dollars spent. :) I could always stay home and watch Rugby, Formula 1 and Premier League football, but I don't even come close to making the great food and drinks that they serve here. 10/10
Overall - It's worth the trip. Always a great location to catch rugby or English Premier Football matches. A taste of Britain here in good old US of A. 9/10
I debated giving 3 or 4 stars but ended on my final answer because the original Broadway location popped my Lion & Rose/Geeks Who Drink cherry. So what if I'm mildly biased.
I love this location for a few reasons. Since opening their doors they have been a completely smoke free pub, which for me gives them definite cool points. There is nothing worse than leaving a bar and wreaking of cigarette smoke, especially if you don't smoke. I have also noticed that they never get overly crowded here unlike the Broadway location where it can be a pain to find parking and/or a table.
Whether it be Geeks Who Drink, karaoke, beer, live music, darts, a good club sandwich, or scantilly clad women, they have it all here. What's not to like?
In all my (albeit short) years of drinking, I have never experienced such a classy crowd of people tending a bar. I experienced a mix of brains and creativity at 1:20 in the morning that was simply staggering. Tanya provided insanely awesome service when most bartenders would have simply brushed you away so late. I was honored to drink at this bar with these people. I made good friends tonight. Rarely do you find such a place with an archaic sense of service. Bravo, people. You save the world without knowing it.
Review Source:We recently visited this pub after a family member discovered it when looking for a local British or Irish pub. We had a blast. Between the five of us, we tried several different brews including some Guinness mix-ups (Black Velvets, Half and Halfs, and Snake Bites). They have something for everyone. One of us had the Corned Beef and Cabbage and really enjoyed it. I had the broiled Parmesan Tomatoes and they were delicious. They aren't on the menu, but you can order them as a side. I definitely recommend them. It happened to be karaoke night when we went, and the DJ seemed to have a very large selection to choose from. We'll definitely be going back to the pub! Karaoke or not!
Review Source:My cousin and I came here for drinks while waiting for her husband to return from a trip.
We must've come at the right time because it was such a relaxing environment. Â Made our beer all the more enjoyable and allowed us to catch up with our lives.
You gotta try their fried calamari! Â Goes great with beer!
Our bartender, Jenn, was awesome!
Would definitely return!
Wednesday night is trivia night at this local watering hole and restaurant. Â A mixed crowd ranging from twenty somethings to those well into their forties gathered here for a fun night of dining, drinks and trivia. Â
While we didn't do very well in the trivia department we did have an excellent meal and a few tasty beverages. Â
We started out with the cheese and chips, which were lightly fried and very tasty. Â The cheese is said to have Guinness in it but i couldn't tell. Â Tasted like standard cheese with a hint of bacon flavor.
For my meal I had the pasty, the pastry crust was flaky and the filling was very tasty, filled with meat and vegetables and covered with a very good gravy. Â The sides I chose were the mashed potatoes and gravy and the macaroni and cheese. Â Both were very tasty and above just the average tag alongs.
For months now, I've been visiting this Lion & Rose at least 3/4 Wednesdays out of the month to play trivia with Geeks Who Drink (dot com). While I'm tempted to preface my food review with "well, for a bar...," it definitely does not warrant that.
The food stands strong on its own, surely leaps and bounds over regular "pub fare." I haven't ordered something I didn't enjoy, be it a salad, burger, or just a side of mac & cheese. Regular nightly drink specials make me happy, and the prices for everything are reasonable. The waitresses, in their tiny outfits, are friendly and most are knowledgeable of the different beers and menu items. They also have no issues with the always multiple checks at our table.
My main draw, like I mentioned before, is trivia. Most Wednesday nights, the restaurant is packed with trivia-seekers. It's free and fun, and takes up a few hours of an otherwise bland Wednesday night (what else am I supposed to do now that Lost is off the air?). While Geeks Who Drink has trivia at a few locations in San Antonio, this L&R is our trivia-home thanks to the ambiance and friendly staff.
Uhh, what's so British about the waitstaff dressed like Britney Spears before she got fat and went crazy? Â But, hey, if they were shooting for 'authentic English' I guess all the girls would have crooked teeth and a post-war ration card. Â Probably not the marketing angle they were going after.
But that's not the reason for the low rating. Â The night we went someone in the kitchen went bananas with the garlic. Â I mean, twirling around, Sound of Music, dancing in the rain slap crazy with it. Â Beyond inedible.
We should have complained, but didn't. Â And the garlic-induced scat-job I pulled in our bathroom later that night almost wound me up in Divorce Court. Â The last time I threw a pair of pants away for a similar reason I was in kindergarten and Nixon had a 72% approval rating.
It has a pet-friendly outdoor area, though. Â Next time maybe we'll bring the dog, I'll sneak in a candy bar, and just stick to beer and muffin-top ogling.
Fish and chips are my favorite. Â Try the Scotch Eggs for an appetizer - REALLY incredible! Â Their sandwiches are good too.
I HIGHLY recommend you join their rewards program. Â We go there about 8 times a year but have accumulated enough points to earn free entrees and deserts.
Service is always prompt but sometimes the waitresses are a bit on the young side so they aren't always as pleasant or as professional as they could be.
The food is always good and the atmosphere is unique.
The first time I came to Lion and Rose, it was simply because it was a halfway point between myself and some friends in New Braunfels. Â We have since been coming back every single Wendesday for Trivia night and good British fare. Â
I am in love with the fish and chips here. Â The "chips" are quarter sized crinkle-cut potatoes. Â They are a great compliment to the Guinness Cheese and Bacon dip appetizer, as well. Â The beer selection isn't bad, either. Â I definitely suggest that you try the Lindemans Framboise, a bottled Belgian Lambic that you uncork and pour into a glass that will make you feel extremely fancy. Â
The decor is very pub-like. Lots of dark wood. Â Plenty of televisions if you want to go to watch some football or bowling. Â Also, my final opinionless fact is that the waitresses wear schoolgirl uniforms.
The Lion and Rose is a decent pub with a good English theme. They have a full bar with a decent selection of beers. I visited 3 of the locations on a double-decker bus trip this past weekend, and it was an okay experience. Not something I'd make annual or even do again if I had a free pass because there is only so much novelty in drinking at the same place in 3 locations and getting wind-blown as you drive down the highway.
I have to say that I really don't make it out here much on my own because it's far from home (all of them have been at least a 20 minutes away) and never has anything going on that I just can't miss. The food is pretty good here, but with several other spots that rival or top the offerings here, I'd rather choose one of those. The dish that should rock is the fish and chips and it kind of fizzles. Then most other things have meat, so I'm stuck in the don't-have-much-to-order category after that. I end up getting the sides more often than not. I do regularly crave the sugar snap peas and bubble and squeak though ;)
Broadway location preferred, but this place is still great. I don't live in or near the Schertz area, so probably won't be back. Trivia contest was going on, so I like that there were smart geeky types all around, and they have enough of their regulars to keep up good bar banter between patron and staff. My friend and I split some fish and chips over a couple pints. I like their take on tartar sauce and the Guiness Mac and cheese was great. One gripe is that if they're going to be all British Pub like, then where the hell's my mushy peas? Over all ok.
Review Source:Roaaarrrwwwww!!
My eyes wide. My head turns. Everyone seems to be eating peacefully. Then it dawned on me that people were cheering at the soccer match on multiple flat screens around the restaurant. Some tables were filled with teenagers in soccer uniforms. Cute. We were not to be outdone. hehe. It was Geeks Who Drink Lost trivia time. Six teams battled it out. Our quizmaster was a 'Sideshow Bob' look-alike, with a considerable voice to boot. In the end, our team (Jack Face) took second place, two points shy of the $200 loot, with only one beer award for the table (downed by the sharp-wit, tipsy Thomas).
At least two people at the table had the Pub Club. Lion and Rose certainly doesn't skimp on the meat. The Bloke's Beer Battered Mushrooms are fried whole button mushrooms with a side of dipping sauce - nothing special. My Highlands salad was only alright. The waitress suggested to add chicken, and the up-sell part of the salad turned out to be the only semi-notable part of it all. My favorite was the Angels on Horseback. They were bacon wrapped shrimp with a small salad. It would have been the perfect portion for me, but we were sharing and I did not want to be rude.
The service was decent. I don't think we had any issues. Everything was refilled, the waitress checked on us often, and our separate checks were set up without a hiccup.
Food is average ; there are a lot of choices. Had a bad experience today. Waitress charged me for 2 orders (mine and someone else's) and the manager barely apologized and said I'd have to wait until Wednesday before the charge would be cleared. I told the manager, "I'm not very happy about this." He responded, "Okay". No attempt was made to try to smooth over the situation. Not going back.
Review Source:We ate at the Lion & Rose in the Forum outside San Antonio on Christmas Eve 2009. Â Family members liked the fish and chips and my grilled shrimp wrapped in applewood smoked bacon, and chips, were excellent. Â Hubby said he would not order the corned beef and cabbage again (his heart and cholestrol thank him!) Â Some in the party tried the "beer flight" which was 9 small glasses of different draught beers served in a wooden box. Â L&R has a great selection of on-tap beers, plus 2 things for the no-wheat or gluten crowd: Ace Pear Cider on tap, and Corona in bottles. I look forward to checking out the L&R in Austin (Westlake) soon. Â Some of the reviewers said L&R tried "too hard" to be authentic British, but the fireplaces, comfy "settles" and guys in kilts were not a problem for me!
Review Source:Over the past three months I've visited Lion and Rose perhaps a dozen times. It's the only real establishment in The Forum that's more bar than restaurant, unlike the Chili's, Fridays, or any other restaurants. The beer selection is - unsurprisingly - almost entirely European, but they offer a good deal more than just Guinness. They take the British pub motif seriously, down to the decor and soccer playing on the TVs.
The place is usually at least moderately busy all the time, and they offer various promotions during the week, like souvenir glasses and trivia on Wednesdays, but I enjoy the simple and inviting atmosphere that makes it easy to chill with a few friends.
The food isn't too shabby, either, with a wide variety of British favorites and more traditional bar food. I've had the shepherd's pie and sweet potato fries, and both make a fine addition to a night's worth of drinking. The short skirts work by the waitresses don't hurt, either.
The Lion and Rose and Hooligan's are the only two real bars in Universal City that aren't dives, and I find the former to be the one better suited to what I am looking to get out of a bar. Not that I won't go to Hooligan's from time to time, but when I'm looking to sit back and grab a few, I'm going to Lion and Rose.
I've been there three times. Had steak two times. Once it was very good but a little under cooked. The second steak was overcooked and tough. I also had something else one time but can't remember what it was. Whatever it was, it was good. Evidently not good enough to remember. I should stick to the English food not the Ameican.
Review Source:I came to the Lion and Rose after going downtown for my 21st birthday. Walking into the place you couldn't tell that it used to be an EZ's. They had put up some walls and lowered the ceiling and it really felt very cozy. We were seated quickly but that is kind of expected at midnight. We got there right as the kitchen was closing so I can't really comment on the food but the beer and alcohol selection was quite good. The service could have been a little better but then again it was late. It was very chill and there were TV's all over the place showing soccer, baseball, and even rugby. Seems like a good place to just go and wind down after work and enjoy a few with friends.
