This place has been the same for 20 years (well minus the interior...RIP pictures of pasta noodles...I learned the difference between rigatoni and llinguine from you)
Fried Chicken is great, the pizza is delicious, steak fries? yes please!
The service is fine...they're attentive and friendly...maybe a little rough around the edges but that's Jimmy's thing and he's actually a sweet guy.
Now they have desserts as well so when you're standing around waiting for your food it's hard to pass up a delish brownie, cupcake or cookie!
Whenever I'm up on the North Shore, Little Red Hen is a MUST because I can't get food and memories like those just anywhere.
Some of the BEST chicken you will find in the north shore area.
Some of the WORST MOST AWFUL customer service you will find in the north shore area. The owner/staff are rude and make it very obvious that they do not care about there customers.
Although the chicken was great, The rude management is enough for me to stay away from them.
Pretty much the best fried chicken in the area. Â You just have to get past Jimmy's gruff exterior; its really just an act. Â Jimmy's daughters primarily run it now so you may not even have to deal with him anyway. Â
Again, BEST FRIED CHICKEN IN THE AREA
I remember as a child having to have the pizza at school special lunches and thinking it tasted like i was eating the box. Â But apparently the pizza is really popular. Â who knew! Â I've never gotten anything but the chicken.
This is a tiny little family joint that's easy to miss, just down the road from Vernon's in Glencoe. Â I took my two boys there mid-week after hanging out at the playground. Â I was impressed with the items on their menu - it's not huge but varied. We had tacos, a skirt steak sandwich, and chicken fingers, and everything was great. Â Keep in mind that you order at the counter and sit at tiny tables - this isn't waiter service and fancy meals, but for a quick bite to eat with kids, it's great. Â Oh, and hey, they had whoopee pies the night I was there, what's not to love?
Review Source:I hate to say it, but I can't go here any more. The slices are half the size and twice the price. Really!!?? Why would you do that to us? What makes you as a food service operator think that we are too dumb to notice? Why do you take us for fools? We still like the paper thin "slices" you make, but come on! The slice once overlapped a paper plate by a lot. Now it fits neatly with room to spare. And no longer is it a reasonable $1.50/slice. Nor is it $2.00/slice. It's a ridiculous $3.00 per weeny slice of CHEESE! Give me a break. I'll pass until the prices come back to earth where real/resaonable people live. Tastes good, but come on!
Review Source:Pretty good fried chicken that's freshly prepared to order. It always seems to need salt though. (These North Shore people seem to be afraid of spice, hmm, wonder why. Nothing ever tastes seasoned up here...even when ordered spicy.) The owner does seem a little moody as others have noted but I haven't personally been subjected to those moods--only seen them directed to other customers. I suggest calling in your order in advance or you will wait at least 10 minutes and possibly as long as 20 depending on how busy the kitchen is. The fries are not very good--also in need of salt and often too soft. I wish they offered a healthy alternative to fries and but I guess if you're going to eat fried chicken, you've basically blown your diet for the day and all bets are off.
Review Source:I REALLY WANTED TO RATE IT 0 STARS BUT I HAD TO PICK ONE.......I have had Red Hen before in the past and I was some what satisfied. But today let me know that I do not need to ever eat their food again. I was more than disapointed. I was disgusted. I work in the West Loop and we have our lunch catered to us. Today it was from Red Hen. I had taken a few things from the trays and I went to take some cheeese sticks. I took mine from the lower part/bottom of the tray, I wanted to make sure I could get some that were still warm. I wish the tempurature was the reason for my review but no. I started to eat and then only a few bites in I felt something funny in my mouth and pulled out a hair and one from my plate, but the worst of it all is: There was a long curly brown hair literally wrapped around a cheese stick I was starting to bite into!!!!!!!! This is something that happened at the restaurant itself!!!! How can they let this happen????? I was so disgusted that I could not eat the rest of my food. Now I am at work with no lunch!!!!! In addition to this Cheese sticks were soggy! Sent with no sauce !! They are never sent with sauce. Who doesnt send them with sauce. And the fried mushrooms were soggy as well. But I would have been willing to at least try to overlook this if I hadnt been eating HAIR FOR LUNCH!!!!!!
Review Source:I have enjoyed everything I have ever had at Little Red Hen including the ribs and hamburgers. A friend told me the veggie burger is good as well. Some of their prices are steep, but this is the high rent district. Â You always get your food in a timely manner, but maybe with some "old man jokes" thrown in. Â
There are a few plastic tables and seats inside as well as out, but I have rarely seen people eating at them. Â Many of the people seem to know each other by name (again, Glencoe is a small, tight knit neighborhood). Â Regardless, this would be a good place to stop before or after the Chicago Botanical Gardens. Â It is within walking distance of the Glencoe Metra stop.
The food here is excellent, but the management can be moody at times. Â They are somewhat of a Glencoe icon, but they don't always take the traditional approach to customer service. Â If they are in a bad mood they will let you know it. Â If you do come here try the chicken or the pizza.
Review Source:Lil Red Hen is a family operated restaurant that has survived both a poorly fated expansion and a fire. It continues to be the premiere carry out joint in the Glencoe/Hubbard Woods area.
Best on the menu are their ribs (but so expensive... the BBQ sauce is amazing), gyros, italian beef, and steak fries.
A Glencoe institution. Â Very good thin crust Pizza and excellent Gyros and Ribs. Â They have a wide range of options on the menu. Â From Fried Chicken and Italian Beef to Fish and Chips and Pasta. Â The aforementined thin crust is what they are known for though. Â I have very found memories of my mother taking me here as a kid. We ordered from here a few weeks ago and its still excellent.
