I can't rave about this little hidden gem of a restaurant in Newburgh enough! If you are craving authentic, inexpensive Mexican food in a very casual setting, this is the place to come to. Located right on Broadway right next door to the also wonderful Machu Pichu, this small little place serves the best tacos around (and for less than $2 each you can certainly eat plenty!), tasty sopas & tortas, filling burritos, comforting soups, and plenty of other traditional fare. Make sure you experiment and try some different things, like the crispy flautas, and the goat soup, and be sure to sprinkle some of their homemade red and green hot sauces on everything. Their fresh tamales are also quite good, but they go quick so make sure you get there early in the day while they still have some.
Seriously, I've gone to Los Portales with like 5 people and the bill came to less than $35, so a couple can easily eat here, and eat a lot, for less than $20. The decor is no frills, and it can get quite noisy, but the food is fresh, genuine, and most importantly 'traditional'...no Taco Bell or Tex-Mex styled fare here, this is the real deal. No alcohol served, so if you are looking for a romantic place with candles, guitar players, chips & salsa, this isn't it, but if you want a quick lunch of excellent authentic Mexican fare, you can't go wrong. I've been to this little place numerous times and it's always awesome.
