I can't rave about this little hidden gem of a restaurant in Newburgh enough! If you are craving authentic, inexpensive Mexican food in a very casual setting, this is the place to come to. Located right on Broadway right next door to the also wonderful Machu Pichu, this small little place serves the best tacos around (and for less than $2 each you can certainly eat plenty!), tasty sopas & tortas, filling burritos, comforting soups, and plenty of other traditional fare. Make sure you experiment and try some different things, like the crispy flautas, and the goat soup, and be sure to sprinkle some of their homemade red and green hot sauces on everything. Their fresh tamales are also quite good, but they go quick so make sure you get there early in the day while they still have some.
Seriously, I've gone to Los Portales with like 5 people and the bill came to less than $35, so a couple can easily eat here, and eat a lot, for less than $20. The decor is no frills, and it can get quite noisy, but the food is fresh, genuine, and most importantly 'traditional'...no Taco Bell or Tex-Mex styled fare here, this is the real deal. No alcohol served, so if you are looking for a romantic place with candles, guitar players, chips & salsa, this isn't it, but if you want a quick lunch of excellent authentic Mexican fare, you can't go wrong. I've been to this little place numerous times and it's always awesome.
Los Portales has fresh clean authentic mexican food. The best Cemitas (overloaded mexican sandwiches on really good bread) i have ever had.
Not really a language barrier, you just may have to wait a moment for multi lingual staff. Been taking my family for years. Â They offer a few changing specials not on the menu. I am usually so excited to be there i forget to ask. The menu changes on weekends and offers some crazy taco option. Toungue, Cow head... Crazy but yummy!
with no food to be had at el tumi, I hied to los portales and had a vegetarian taco, a tongue taco and pork pozole sopa (soup). Â All were delicious and I had to take home the soup I was so full. Â I am a small person though.
the tamarindo shaved ice was made with fresh tamarind - I saw them working with the pods the week before.
go if you have a sense of adventure.
This review strictly deals with taco's. I didn't really try anything else there except the guacamole which was spicy and delicious. I really enjoyed eating here. The taco's are really small but filling. They are fresh and with the exception of the chicken very well seasoned. The spicy pork and chorizo are my personal favorites. At $1.25 per taco you can't go wrong. They even throw in 2 types of salsa (green/red) along with radishes and limes. The staff is friendly and accommodating to your needs. The servers have a hard time with english and there's no real awning sign to see so be on the look out. I was the only Gringo eating in there most of the time. Definitely worth checking out.
