A good place to pick up food to eat by the beach. Â And they take credit cards.
I liked their selection of sandwiches, and picked the two tastiest sounding ones:
The Lifeguard - with turkey and cranberry sauce. Â Great tasting. Soft bread. No complaints.
The Porky Pig - with pork loin, thin slices of green apples, radicchio slaw, and whole grain mustard. Â The radicchio made the sandwich unpleasantly bitter. Â It was also made the overwhelming saltiness of the meat stand out more. Â Bleh. I didn't feel that sad when half of my sandwich fell in the sand.
We went to The Lunch Box today for lunch. My husband got the salmon po' boy, I got the veggie, and my daughter got a kids grilled cheese. The food was really good! All of the ingredients were nice and fresh. Service was good and fast.
Just beware - this isn't the kind of place where you sit down and eat. Plan to pick up your sandwiches and head down to the beach (a two minute walk) or head over to the park across the street. There are a few tiny tables out front - that's it. Â Also, note there are no restrooms here - so again - head down to the beach.
I rated the Lunch Box sandwiches with a 4-star prior review. Â This update is only for their "Taqueria Night".
Short version: Â Mediocre Mexican food, their sandwiches are better.
Longer version: Â
After enjoying the sandwiches, ESPECIALLY the Salmon Po'Boy, from the Lunch Box, I couldn't wait to try their Tacqueria Night (Thursday and Friday night) offerings. Â We ordered a Salmon burrito (with sour cream and guacamole), 4x Salmon tacos, Nachos + veggies, and a side of guacamole, chips, and salsa. Â The total came to $45, and it was a lot of food.
First, the service. Â When I called in the gal taking the order asked me if I wanted guacamole and sour cream on the nachos. Â I asked her to confirm that the menu said it came with these things - she hesitated a moment and then said that she was asking if we wanted "extra" guacamole and sour cream. Â I don't know if this was an attempt to upsell or just an innocent mistake she was trying to cover for, but I didn't care for it either way. Â The service when I arrived to pick everything up was just fine, except that the cashier didn't offer me a receipt - I finally had to ask for it before leaving. Â It's a small thing, but they didn't include any napkins. Â (I think the guy behind the register was distracted by chatting with the three gals hanging around in the store). Â Anyhow, there was nothing terrible or wonderful about the service, so I'd probably give it a 3.
Next, the food. Â When I ordered the food I was told it would be ready in 13 to 20 minutes, I arrived in 12 minutes. Â I knew I was early, so I happily paid first and waited while they put together the order. Â The first thing ready was the burrito, followed quickly by the nachos and tacos and then the salsa, chips, etc. Â It probably took me about another 10-12 minutes to get back home. Â Unfortunately, we found all of the nachos to be soggy and limp. Â My wife liked the side of chips, but I thought they were a slightly too thick - just my personal preference. Â The salmon burrito was okay, and the salmon tacos (which were essentially the same contents as the salmon burrito, less the rice) were actually better. Â I think they would have been outstanding with some of the delicious Siriacha tartar sauce they put on the Salmon Po'Boy, but I didn't think to ask.
Taco Night Service: Â 3
Salmon Tacos: Â 4, pretty good
Salmon Burrito: 3, it was okay
Nachos: Â 1, while not gross, these were soggy, limp, and terrible and I would definitely not order them
This service during this one particular experience wasn't as great as the service when I had ordered from The Lunch Box on the four or five prior occasions, so I don't think it is really reflective of the store's overall service. Â That said, the service would have gotten a 5 from me if I had been given/offered napkins, had a better phone order experience, and didn't have to ask for my receipt. Â And, even if I had given the service a 5, the food is the main criteria for me when you're at a take-out joint anyhow. Â With the underwhelming burrito and pretty terrible nachos, even stellar service wouldn't have changed my overall rating of...
Overall: Â 3
It's a great causal spot for a sandwich when you're passing by (or headed to) Stinson Beach. There is ample seating in the park across the parking lot (and they'll bring your food over when it's ready). You'll also find a few small tables outside and a mini-table tennis set. I had the Tribeca which was a bit like an Italian sub on dutch crunch, tasty meats which totally hit the spot.
Review Source:Went here looking to get some tacos and nachos that they have so many pics of, only finding out they only serve that on some days..... I say ok, I'll try the salmon poor boy sub. What do u know ther out of salmon. So I order a blt which is 8 bucks plus a dollar for avocado and expect a beast of a blt. When I looked at my two pieces of bread with some lettuce , I about shit myself I was so disappointed. I posted a pic of it too. I would have complained to the employee but she was young and fearing a wad of spit in my sandwich I reluctantly ate the damn thing.
Review Source:The sandwiches here are great and easily rival the gourmet sandwiches you'll find in SF. Clean facility with friendly service. Â
I got the chicken salad sandwich, which was really tasty and the bread was fresh. My friend got the sliders, which he liked. The cucumber lemonade was excellent. The selection of ice creams looked good, but it was cold so we didn't get any.
This review is both for the lunch box and for Rachel the owner who catered our wedding in Stinson Beach 3 weeks ago. She was absolutely amazing and helpful and a big part of the reason our wedding (weekend) in Stinson Beach was absolutely perfect. I initially got Rachel's information indirectly from the Stinson Beach Community Center when we reserved the space for our wedding. Rachel met with us and helped us to get organized, not just with the food but other things we hadn't thought of for the SBCC, lighting, outdoor heaters, a raw oyster bar, not to mention the incredible menu for the reception, loaded with local organic dishes. We ended up having Rachel cater our Friday night rehearsal dinner, wedding reception and Sunday morning brunch.. and we got tons of rave reviews from our guests about both the food and the service. Throughout the planning and during our wedding weekend we had a few meals from the Lunch Box itself and everything was top notch. I can't recommend Rachel highly enough or say enough good things about our entire experience with her and the Lunch Box.
Review Source:Stopped by here after a Mt. Tam hike for a late lunch.
I recommend the Salmon Po' Boy. Delish!
No bathrooms, but not a big deal b/c there's some near the beach. Â Not really any seating (there's a small bench w/ some magazines where we waited for our food), but there's some across the parking lot in the park. Â
A no frills place w/ good food after a long hike. Â Closed Tues and Wed.
Solid place to grab a sandwich before heading down to the beach.
I've been here a few times and have always been pleased. Last time I went, I had the BLT (add avocado) and it was excellent. I get a deviled egg each time I come, and they are always different but delicious - not just the same ol' mustard and paprika.
The service is pretty friendly and it never takes more than a few minutes for the food to come out.
One star off for having no bathroom and not very much seating. There is a weird little park in the parking lot with some tables, but the inside is big enough that they could fit a few tables inside. If you've been hiking or out at the beach, you might be kind of done being outside.
I will be back next time I visit Stinson.
Awesome!! This is literally a 3-4 minute walk from the Beach!Went here last weekend with a group of about 15, and I didnt hear any complaints! We came for lunch and came again for dinner the same day! We had Lotas of kids and adults is our group and everyone loved it! I had pulled pork for lunch and the salmon po boy for dinner both were excellent! Well be back next time we are in Stinson Beach!
Review Source:Stopped here to grab a bite on our way to Alamere Falls. Â I had a really hard time deciding what to get. Â Everything sounded so good! Â I went with the salmon po' boy and it was delicious! Â The cucumber lemonade was so refreshing! Â The quinoa needed a little more flavor.
Service was great. Â And there is a nice little area to eat outside.
Really great sandwiches! A little bit overpriced, which is why I had to dock a star - but it is a high-quality sandwich, so I'm just being a cheapo.
I got the pulled pork sandwich, probably the most unhealthy sandwich on the menu. It came with potato chips in the sandwich, I'll put it that way. But oh was it good! Pulled pork was cooked to perfection. It was a little small for the price - around $8-9 for the sandwich alone, but it was very tasty and memorable. My friend got the salmon po'boy sandwich and said it was the best he's had. So that's another option if you want to stay on the healthy side.
The cashier seemed very friendly - she complimented my otter box, which was very cool of her. They have a little parking lot, and though they don't have tables inside, there's a nice little park right outside with benches and tables to eat on. They also have two little tables outside the store, but I prefer the park.
Stinson Beach was our turnaround for our hike, and I started to worry about all the burgers and seafood that was being sold. Â We found a cute little sandwich shop and decided to take some sandwiches to the beach to enjoy the beautiful day.
Green salad with currents, blue cheese, slivered almonds, honey vinaigrette. Â A fantastic salad, and well-dressed. Â I really liked the proportions of greens to toppings ratio. Â The dressing was also great!
Veggie Sandwich: Â A soft roll with beet goat cheese, haricot verts, lemon scented asparagus, and some frisee. Â It comes neatly wrapped and beautifully presented, no messy lunch here! Â While the sandwich was good, it was lacking a bit in flavor. Â I think it could have used a bit more acidity. Â
The All-Nighter Sandwich: Â BF got this with a fried egg, bacon, roasted tomatoes and arugula. Â BF thought it was "pretty good" Â but nothing out of this world.
Overall: Â A great little place to grab lunch, there are plenty of little sides you can add to your sandwich. Â I wasn't too blown away by the sandwich, but I thought the salad was great.
I ordered their Salmon Po'Boy and it was awesome. The sandwiches here are cooked to order. It's a small place and there seems to be just a cashier and a cook (from what I could see).
Though I didn't utilize this, you have the option of calling to place an order and they'll deliever your food down at the park/beach.
I am an avid hiker of Mount Tam so I am at Stinson Beach pretty regularly as my mid-way stop/break location (I usually start from the top of the mountain). This place is a gem of an incentive to get my ass down that mountain as quickly as possible so I can reward myself with a delicious sandwich, baked good and/ or refreshments.
I just hiked Mount Tam yesterday and I devoured by far the most delicious albacore melt that I've EVER had (I love food and currently live in SF, so I don't just throw statements like this around often. There is a lot of good food in my life.) Â I also had a cucumber mint lemonade that was incredibly refreshing and hydrating. I will be getting this combo the next time I'm in the neighborhood.
This place is always the best stop on Stinson Beach. The food is super fresh and healthy, the service is speedy and the vibe is super chill and beachy.
Check this place out. You will not be disappointed :)
Hubby and I came upon this place while on our way to Stinson Beach and decided to stop and have lunch. Had a hard time deciding what to order as everything on the menu looked really good but we both ordered the salmon po' boy sandwich.
OMG I believe that is the best sandwich I have ever had! The bread was so soft, I haven't ever had salmon in combination with avocado but it was delicious! Washed it down with some of their fresh lemonade w/mint leaf which was very good and refreshing.
The service was good, we didn't wait long for our food and the employees were really friendly. I liked how when our food was ready an employee brought it out from behind the counter to where we were seated even though we were taking it with us.
Was there yesterday and ordered a grilled salmon po boy sandwich and it was delish!
Thank you The Lunch Box for opening way past lunch hour! I did not have lunch and was driving along the scenic Highway 1 and arrived at Stinson Beach nearly around 5 pm! Try to find parking there on the weekends! It's always packed with beach going locals! All of a sudden I saw a sign saying Lunch Box so I turned right away into the parking lot that had ample parking, which is also the parking lot of the Post Office!
Now back to the sandwich: it was huge (in my book as I tend to eat like a bird these days) and was cut into two pieces. The bread was soft and fresh, there was plenty of fresh salmon with avocado and juicy dressing. The dressing did not taste like mayo and I dislike mayo. It had a slight tartness and it went well with the avocado and salmon! I scoffed down the whole sandwich within 10 minutes and was very happy and satisfied! Then off I walked down the beach as it is right by this place!
I will definitely come back next time I hike at the nearby Muir Woods or Mt. Tamapais!
The sandwich flavors sounded intriguing and like legitimate food (as opposed to, say, hot dogs or fried fish), so we checked it out.
There was a really tempting fridge with gelato that looked great, and salads and side salads next to that. We opted for a lemonade and it was good. The sandwiches we got were the pork loan/apple/radicchio/mustard and the green bean/beet/goat cheese/vinaigrette ones. Pretty decent for a beachside hole in the wall.
We were disappointed that there was NO BATHROOM (I noticed the whole town is sadly, sadly void of decent public restrooms). The service was slooooooow and a bit bumbling (an employee just gave away one customer's food to the wrong person), but I guess.... it's the beach so.... Yeah.
Favorite Sandwiches:
1. The BLT- phenomenal and unique
2. The Spring Chicken- delicious!
Little amuse bouche-- try their deviled eggs! Delicious!
Their daily lemonades are also refreshing and unique-- most recently I had the Cucumber Agua Fresca-- AMAZING! Hopefully they make that a constant beverage at their deli.
Stinson beach has limited options, but Lunch Box has brought a refreshing new food choice to the beach.
Friendly and efficient staff, doesnt take long to get your food order.. great option for delicious and healthy food at the beach!
It must have been the worse food I had in years, "Mexican Night?" at "The Lunch Box!" Â Wilded and badly made salad, terrible tasting empanadas the size of a small appetizer for almost $5.00 and tacos that made me sick, yes, sick. Â The shell of one of the tacos was burned solid black. Â Of course by the time I got to it the door was already locked, the place had already closed for the day and the employee who was enjoying a beer and a Coke at the same time was on the Internet and he did not care. Â Overall, way too expensive, $50 out of the window and then in the car to look for another place else to eat in the middle of nowhere. Â Due to the terrible food it serves and it's pricing I would not recommend "The Lunch Box."
I have seen great reviews here on their sandwiches and if indeed they are that good, although I have my doubts, then I suggest they stick to what they know. Â Again, I do not recommend "The Lunch Box."
This is a little deli spot with great tasting sandwiches. Â We were pleasantly surprised with each of our meals and the portions were good as well. Â The seating is scarce so be prepared to take it with you or sit in the parking lot. Â I think there is one little table for two inside.
The service is friendly and gave great advice on the food selection. Â There are also no bathrooms so go before you come! Â I would try this place again next time we are in the area!
Hikers seem to love this place, but I should have known better than to order the pulled pork from a non-BBQ place. Â It tasted like something I could throw into a crock pot. Â The place was super clean and friendly. Â Prices were reasonable for the area at $8/sandwich + $2/drink. Â They had limited seating, but a nice looking deli case. Â I'll definitely try something more interesting next time!
Review Source:+ Friendly, efficient service
+ Free wifi (soooo useful - SB has terrible cell service) - just ask for the password
+ Vegetarian options available
Getting lost on the Matt Davis trail amid the afternoon fog of death + a couple of wrong turns & backtracking = near starvation status.
My group of 4 friends and I were really ready to tuck into some lunch after our long hike and The Lunch Box did not disappoint.
I had the TUNA MELT on dutch crunch and a small cup of the SPINACH SOUP. I appreciated that the tuna melt was not at all on the greasy side and did not have too much mayo. This tuna melt used a light and fresh tuna salad, tomatoes, and what appeared to be red leaf lettuce. Very good and filling. The spinach soup was smooth and creamy and dairy-free. It could have used a bit more seasoning but because it didn't have cream as an ingredient, it tasted very light and cleansing.
I also had a LEMON BAR, which I took took home to enjoy later. This was good but I would have preferred for it to be more on the tart side (just personal preference).
Tuna melt + small cup of soup + lemon bar + coffee total = ~$16-17 (a little on the expensive side for lunch)
TIP: The condiment area in the corner near the door has baskets of 8-10 different hot sauces. Great for seasoning your soup!
Service was friendly and fast. I brought in both coffee and water eco cups. They washed out my coffee cup even though I told them it would be okay to just refill it with coffee unwashed. I also had my water cup filled for free. Awesome!!!
Great place for a bite after doing the Matt Davis-Steep Ravine-Dipsea loop, or as a stop if Stinson Beach is your halfway point. Awesome selection of sandwiches, salads, soup, and other snacks - all very fresh and healthy. Their deviled eggs are amazing, especially the horseradish ones. Super friendly service.
Review Source:It's simple: Â Four of us picked up sandwiches here in October on the way to Muir Woods (after finding this review in Yelp), and later when we ate them we all agreed they were the BEST SANDWICHES WE HAD EVER TASTED! Â I had the Cuban; I don't recall what others had, but some asked for minor modifications to their sandwiches which were readily accommodated. Â It takes time to custom craft a sandwhich, but it's worth it! Â Five stars hands down.
Review Source:After the 7.4 mile Dipsea hike, I was ready to sit at Stinson and rest for a bit, and to nutrify myself. The trail mix had spilled in my pack.
Stinson Beach cuisine has always been centered around fried foods and soft serve. Just want you want for the return hike, right? That return hike which happens to be much more challenging than the one to Stinson. Lest there are any cardiologists on the trail, you might want to avoid most Stinson fare.
Just as I had resigned to nibbling the bottom of my pack, my friend spotted a sign for the Lunch Box. Bless her. It's located in an inviting storefront next to the SB Post Office. The menu was just want a hiker needs: Â healthy food, perfectly portioned, and carb centered. Friend went with the Porky Pig, which was a genius combination of pork loin, whole grain mustard, apple, and radicchio. Mine was a tuna melt, and an award winning one at that. Albacore, pepperjack, and I'm forgetting something, but it was all on a marbled rye! And it was something else. Hand delivered by a shy but adorable two year old who told me that her Daddy made them. Many thanks to her Daddy; these sandwiches were saviors.
Sat at Stinson, got ogled by the seagulls while eating, and was reminded that there's not much that can top a great sandwich, sitting at the beach, in the company of a great friend. Thanks to the Lunch Box for giving me both the sandwich and the energy to appreciate the moment.
My family and I visited SB for a wedding on the beach this past Sunday afternoon. Â We arrived early so we could enjoy the beauty of the place and get a bite to eat before the Wedding began, so... I did a search on my phone through Yelp to find a place to feed the girls and decided to try out "The Lunch Box" due to the great reviews. Â I've got to tell you, the Employees are awesome, helpful and patient! Â Plus, you have got to try their "BLT"! Â I've never tasted such a good sandwich as that! Â Beyond 5 stars!!! Â Serious. Â They have homemade soups and a very attractive dinner menu also. Â A must on everyone's visit to SB. Â JR
Review Source:Cute little deli with a nice, chill Stinson vibe. High quality food at reasonable prices. You can pop in there for some food for your lazy day at the beach or a prepackaged dinner entree to take home and reheat.
Hot sandwiches are $8, build your own sandwiches are $7 with a nice choice of quality meats, cheese and breads. They also have soup, the Tuscan bean looked great -- but some lucky person ahead of me got the last cup -- bummer!
I had a great beet salad with green beans and nice, fresh spinach salad. This is a great little addition to town. I can't wait to try some of their dinners. It is next to the post office in the old Willow Camp Catering spot so there is parking and easy in and out.
