This place has the potential to be a fun sports bar/pub. Unfortunately their food is overpriced, of poor quality, and it is terrible. The place is drafty and cold. The drink specials are pretty cheap, but that is the only good thing I can say. When you can find better pub food for less just about anywhere else in bloomington, no need to go to Macri's.
Review Source:Last night, 12/14/12, my wife and I walked into Macri's at 6:15 and joined a larger party from work who were already there. Â The place was a little less than half full. Â The waiter greeted us with, "You guys wanna drink?" Â Charmed, I'm sure. Â I said that we'd need to look at a menu and he was gone. Â Ten minutes later I got up from our table in search of a menu. Â In the meantime the server was socializing at the bar and could easily have been mistaken for a customer. Â At 7:00, we left.
Three parties failed in their duties: the management, the server, and the server's mother.
Amazing food, great atmosphere and wonderful staff! The owners are great and are seen regularly working the floor, and behind the bar. The bar staff are knowledgeable, fast, and friendly. Drink specials are innovative, original, and a great price! The food is wonderful, the gyro rivals Trojan Horse, the Pulled Pork is just as good as Short Stop, and the Mozzarella Sticks are a must try!
Review Source:Won't go back. I tried them twice. The food is sub par at best. Albeit the mozzarella stix are good, but that's it. The second time I went I had nachos. Â I've had better nachos from a high school lunch room back in the 80's. Unfortunately this is not like the original Macri's. They better make some changes or they'll go down fast.
Review Source:The food is pretty much the same as at the old store --- and that's a good thing, because the sandwiches are excellent, the burger is underrated, and the appetizers (especially the mozzarella sticks and nachos) are still awesome. Drink specials are good, and the beer selection is more than adequate. I admit to being disappointed in the pizza --- it doesn't seem to be of the same quality as I remember it being. The location is excellent, and easy to get to either by walking or by parking.
Review Source:I was excited when Macri's reopened under new ownership. Â Have really missed them. Â New place just doesn't quite measure up with the old one though. Â Supposedly they bought the recipes, but we had all our old favorites and they were good. Â Just not the same. Â The old Macri's was a four. Â This place a 3.
Review Source:I used to be a big fan of the Macri's of yore, so this version has a lot to live up to. Â A friend and I went today and while finding parking was challenging, I was able to drive around the block a couple of times before scoring a space right in front. Â This Macri's is a bit more modern than I was expecting, given the history of the Depot and the rustic decor of the first Macri's, but it was very clean and attractive. Â We were seated upstairs in the bar and the only complaint I have about that is only having bar-style seating available. Â I'm very short and those tall stools at the tables aren't at all comfortable, but aside from that, the atmosphere was lovely. Â Great natural lighting, wonderful view. Â
Our waiter was Lucas and he was fantastic. Â Great attitude, quick, efficient service, if maybe a bit eager. Â We ordered drinks and an appetizer (mozzarella sticks - YUM!!) and got them very quickly. Â I ordered the pork tenderloin and my friend had the California Club Panini. Â Here I have one last issue - my friend wanted the mayo on her sandwich on the side, however our waiter explained that the sandwiches are pre-made in the morning and it is impossible to make any changes. Â For the price, I would think the food would be made to order, not pre-made and waiting to be heated up. Â
Other than that, our food arrived quickly, the french fries were perfectly done and our experience was, overall, pretty darned fantastic. Â I'll definitely be back.
Macri's is back!!! Â Â it's just as great as it was but now in a better location. Â For those that loved the old location, you'll notice they still have the wooden booths. Â
The mozzarella cheese sticks are outta of this world. It's a mistake not to get them.   On this particular trip  I got got my old favorite, the country chicken salad.  It's lettuce, grilled chicken strips, shredded cheddar, shredded mozzarella, bacon, tomatoes and croutons.  It's a huge salad so I was happy to see that it's now possible to order a smaller version.
What could this place do to change? Â Get Coke products :-)
I am, admittedly, a Macri's junkie. Â Since the original closed, I've been dreaming of the day when I could once again feast on my favorites. Â BRT, Old Chicago, Cheese Sticks, Nacho's - so many wonderful items were becoming distant memories.
And then a miracle happened.
Macri's is back, and it's not better than ever, it's just like it was - fantastic! Â I'm amazed at how similar the items are. Â I've been to the new location four times since it reopened just a couple of weeks ago - I'm trying to work my way thru the menu - and I haven't been disappointed yet.
BRT - exact reproduction of the original. Â It's wonderful!
Old Chicago - almost exact reproduction of the reproduction. Â The green peppers were just a bit too crispy (they should be grilled and soft) but still wonderful. Â It's my all-time fave!
Cheese Sticks - They're cloned. Â Amazing, big, perfect breading. Â
Nachos - Same as before. Â Never the best in town, but love them anyway!
Fried Mushrooms - Same as before, amazing.
Cheesy Garlic Bread - great. Â Don't forget to squeeze a little lemon juice on there to make them perfect!
French Fries - the early days of Macri's didn't offer fries, but before they closed they were added to the menu, and they're still great.
I haven't had a chance to try the pizza again (I have to get my fill of the BRT's and OC's first) but am looking forward to that as well.
Also of note: Â They still have the dino-bite chicken for the kids, and the big steins of beer, though I haven't had a chance to enjoy one of those yet.
The first few days of the reopening were a challenge for them, they had some serious facility and service issues, but I have had good luck since. Â I've seen a few comments otherwise about service and, frankly, I'm sure they're working some kinks out but I could care less frankly because the food is worth it!
The new location is the old train depot downtown. Â It's a beautiful facility, with plenty of TV's and seating, and a bar upstairs. Â It isn't as big as the original, but the location is better and it has the same look/feel inside.
They're a bit more expensive than before, but then again what isn't? Â In Bloomington this is a must-visit-oh-I-am-so-happy-they-are-back dining option!
I'm giving it 5-stars for it's category (sandwich/bar/deli/etc) - I'm giddy it's back!
Overpriced, loud, and very slow service. Arrived at 1pm on a Sunday with a 15-20 minute wait. We chose to sit at the bar to get service quicker. Not only are the music and TV blaring so loud I couldn't  hear a friend talking from two stools away,  we also didn't receive our food until almost 2:30... 2 burgers and a panini with fries. really shouldn't have taken that long. The food was ok. Fries tasted frozen and cooked way too fast. My burger was cold and not worth the $9.49 I paid for it.  After paying our bill and leaving we noticed what appeared to be grease/food/water leaking out from under an exterior door onto the sidewalk. Gross. Idk what that was or where it came from, but I will not be returning to find out.
Review Source:First off, I should point out that the other two reviews were posted about 2 weeks after the very soft opening...the menu is even still being finalized.
This is a rebirth of the long-standing Macri's Deli that stood on Bloomington's East Side for a number of years. People loved their larger booth (6-tops) and their mozzarella sticks - the later being the one thing most people will recommend ordering.
Pros: 1) Cool, restored historic building, 2) different atmospheres between the two floors (group-oriented downstairs, game-watching upstairs), 3) Location - 1/2 block away from an inexpensive parking garage and also at the Farmer's Market doorstep, 4) Memories - people love that this is back and I am surprised to find that more people haven't reviewed it yet. :)
Room for Improvement: 1) Menu Diversity - Bloomington has grown up a bit since they were in business and it would be great for the menu to reflect that. 2) Tall Tables Upstairs - those who aren't tall will tell you that this is a great way make us shorter folks rather uncomfortable for longer visits...meaning, I will push my group to choose a different game-watching location if I am going to be miserable in the tall chairs...also, not so great for the kiddos.
Neat old building. Nice, clean atmosphere. Just opened apparently. I had dinner here with a business colleague who is Mr. OG Bloomington. He knows more about Bloomington than the mayor. In his opinion this place doesn't quite measure up to the old school location of yesteryear that was located on S. College Mall Rd.
We dined in the upstairs bar area, pretty neat. If you sit at the bar, you'll quickly realize the blaring TV's within inches of your head was not well thought through. It's not like they were fighting for space to put these. There's TVs on the wall, on the bar and in the bar. Tube saturation my friends. The place doesn't have to be that loud and you still have to shout and/or listen carefully to anyone you are carrying on a conversation with. The "hand cupped around the ear" trick works pretty well though, considering. The bartender honored our request to turn our TV down which was much appreciated!
I enjoyed my sandwich, the Donovan. I would highly recommend. Apparently it's a throw back to the original location. Nice portions of meat on this sandwich, although it could use a bit more Parmesan. Keep the sweet pickle, it makes the sandwich! The cheese on the garlic bread was not melted all the way and according to my colleague, the portions on the garlic bread are down 50% from the original location.
Bartender was attentive, although our salads arrived with our entrees, and our appetizer after that. A little bass akwards, but not a huge deal.
Last word of advice: When you belly up to the bar and order a draught beer and are asked "regular or large"....be ready to gulp down a 32oz monster if you say large. I didn't mind this little surprise, but someone might. Prices moderate: $50 for two sandwiches, garlic bread and 2, 32oz beers plus modest tip.
Overall, I would give this place 3 stars. I would probably come back, but with so many dining establishments with that awesome "B-town local" feel in the area, it might take a while before I hike it back.
