This is a good Asian restaurant that I as a Asian have always dreamed of. Do is an Asian fusion restaurant with mostly Korean and Japanese food. I tried all of their lunch, dinner and the late night menus. It is located in the East 4th of street of Downtown in which many other Asian restaurants are placed. It takes only 5minuts from Sample gate to the restaurant on foot. Don't worry about the parkings. There are plenty of free parking spaces on the street. I'll talk about the lunch i had here 3weeks ago. I and my friend had and enjoyed Bulgogi (Korean BBQ cooked in the kitchen) and Kutsu curry (curry over the rice and port cutlet. In short they were all great. The Bulgogi was very soft, juicy and well spiced with original Korean BBQ sauces. (I am Korean it tastes similar to the one in Korea.)Above all, it's so large in quantity. I bet you can't even finish your plate unless you are that hungry and play football. The katsu curry was good too. A pork cutlet was perftly fried. The outside crust was soft and crunchy and the inside pork was little pinky and tender. The curry is lot different from Indian curry. It is thicker like gravy and has lots of vegetables in the sauce. The curry was little too sweet for me but I think it's ok for Americans in general. Â The curry was again large in quantity. The chefs are very generous about it. I think all the menus they have are Americanized fortunately in the great ways. Generally, those fusioned menus are sweeter than their original versions. But it's not that sweetened so genuine Asian like me could enjoy it. I think most Americans would not mind it because everytime I visit there I see half of the cusotmers Americans.
Price ranges: On average, they are little pricey compared to common pizza restaurant.
The middle end menu like I tried at lunch would be $9. (price distribution at lunch is like $7~12). The same middle end menu at dinner would be $11. ($9~14) However it is worth it. I don't think it's over priced taking its large quantity into account.
Service: The services were perfect. The waitresses checked if everythings were alright every 5minutes. They were all kind, quick and had smiles on their faces all the time.
The ambience and atmosphere are the best of this place. The wooden walls and dark orange lightings provide this place with super cozy atmosphere. It would definitely make you feel that you are in the exotic Asian restaurant. It wasn't noisy at all on the day I visited. In addition the restaurant doesn't have any weird bad Asian food smells. It doesn't smell at all. Â However since the restaurant is small you might feel stuffy when it gets crowded.
Do is a great new Asian Fusion restaurant with tasty food, late night hours, and friendly service. The atmosphere is super cool with imported wood walls and a bamboo ceiling. The 'fusion' here is mostly Korean and Japanese. I have so far only had lunch here but the bang for your buck was amazing. Our friends had and enjoyed: Bulgogi, 2 different Korean bento boxes, and the Tori Katsu Curry. The boxes were a huge hit and I love my Tori Katsu but the curry was different than what I was familiar with (Indian or Thai curry) as a flour or starch was added as a thickener making it less curry-y and more gravy-y. But still all very good. I will for sure be going back!
Other Details: 1) Parking - street or a nearby pay lot. 2) Handicap Accessible - many steps, if just a few steps are manageable then the outdoor seating would be an option, but this is in an old house and the main restaurant/restrooms have 2 sets of steps. 3) Credit Cards - Accepted. 4) Noise Level - low to average 5) Booze - beer and wine only.
Room for Improvement: 1) Processed Foods - if you want to get more of the population of Bloomington to be fans, then loose the heavily processed foods. The best examples of this are the can corn in the salad and the side dish that is called 'sausages' but is cut up hot dogs. These are unappetizing and make the restaurant look cheap. This is a shame because the other food is tasty and looks lovingly prepared. 2) Restroom Water Temp - this is a newly added restroom and I am happy it is there but when you flush the toilet it causes the sink water to become the temperature of the sun! I was burned and it was so hot that steam was coming off of it (which I unfortunately did not notice until post-burn). Not only is that dangerous but if it is that hot then you know people aren't washing their hands. 3) Porch Color - it is a shame that the beautiful limestone porch was painted (limestone should never be painted), but as the deed had already happened before Do moved in, maybe at least paint it a color that isn't an uappitizing 'sick skin tone.'
What they Do So Right: 1) Atmosphere - warm environment with imported wooden walls but still bright enough that you can still see your food. Lots of nice upgrades from the previous restaurant. 2) Outdoor Seating - they have taken a fair amount of outdoor seating and improved it with a covered section that contains Korean BBQ grill-in tables. 3) Hours - open from lunch to late night. 4) Clean - They put in a new restroom so you no longer have to walk into the kitchen area. Everything was clean and nice. 5) Menu Variety - lots of options including lunch specials and a special late night menu. 6) Vegetarian Friendly - thanks for marking which dishes can be made vegetarian for our veg friends.
