Food has always been great. Their burger is awesome! And don't miss their cole slaw, even if you don't typically like slaw give it a try it's nice and light. We usually eat at the bar, bartender's are always pleasant and able to read their guests. They know if you wanna chat or if you don't. Â Their wait staff leaves some things to be desired but I guess that's with most places. You usually see the owner around too which is nice.
Review Source:I've grown to really enjoy Maud's Tavern. I've eaten here about a half a dozen times. It didn't make much of an impression on me at first, because it serves very straightforward American food. Nothing fancy or exotic about it. But that's part of its charm. Maud's is a very nice, unpretentious place to relax. Sitting outside is an especially nice experience when the weather is nice.
The food is really well prepared, tasty, and satisfying. I've had a lot of items from the menu, but my favorites are the mussels, the grilled fish (they typically have salmon, but sometimes other specials like snapper), and the pasta dishes. Their desserts are really good too. Try the chocolate chip cake, which is very dense and rich and requires a glass of milk. It's one of the reasons I keep coming back to Maud's.
4 star dishes but a 5 star experience
There is something lovable about this place. Â We went here for the first time a week or so ago and really liked the atmosphere and friendly service. Â They also had a reasonable selection of beers and wines by the glass at fairly good prices.
Surprisingly for an 'American' restaurant, the pasta dishes were the stars of the car. Â The fusilli with shrimp and cappellini with white clams were both quite flavorful (though they were a bit too oily). Â The mussels were pretty good...nothing to write home about either way. Â The lamb chops were very tasty but also very small - particularly for the price.
We did get here around 5:30 on a weeknight. Â From other reviews it is apparent that the restaurant may have problems when it is full - but we didn't experience any.
I've been to Maud's a few times now, most recently on a Friday night. It's a small little place with an Historic Hastings Theme to it. If you are from Hastings like myself, it feels like home.
Although the service isn't the fastest, this place isn't meant to be a fast food restaurant. Â The food is decent. A lot of it says "Home-Made" like the mozzarella sticks, but I have a hard time believing that to be true as they are just to perfect in shape and size.
The place it a little pricey, but if you get a deal on restraunt . com it's worth going there for dinner. If you are lucky enough to sit outside on a nice day/night, it's much better!
OK Food, Drinks, great price, great local Tavern.
yeas, service could be faster. but this not a place to get a quick meal. you site drink talk with your friends, and hang out... I love this place. I would give it a better rating but I do have the some of the same complaints people who gave 2 starts or less.
Would like a 1.5 option so, meh, this is a handicapped score. I really wanted to love this place. Repeatedly. Would like to give a higher score but two times around was one too many.
On second time, I am again astounded by the poor service and food. There are no bread trays jumping with bread. I ordered lamb chops and asked about the vegetables - what are they? I received this exact verbiage: "mixed." I probably looked like I didn't understand and received the response, "you know, whatever is in the back." Okaaaaaaaaaaay. Then, 5 minutes later, I was told, "you know, we have no mint jelly, do you still want the chops? We already started them." Me: "ok, I guess." Waitress (a chuckle): "We have grape jelly, heh - heh." Water never refilled. I will say that napkins and cutlery were clean.
Solution to barkeeps of the world: Don't offer food if you charge for food at your bar AND you find food a major inconvenience. Better to have 5 dishes, standouts, then offer an array of unimaginative and poorly executed dishes. Don't hire waitresses (in this economy?) that are interpersonally unskilled (or, if they are close friends, TRAIN them as necessary).
I hope Maud, family and friends read this review. I hope they don't knee jerk respond and just post "positives" in return. Because, like many folks on the River, I really like the location of this joint -- it could be lots better if someone truly cared.
We sat outside on an evening that looked like rain and then cleared up. We had a great view of the Hudson River and the Palisades Cliffs, which recently experienced a rock slide that revealed some new layers of rock. The service was very friendly. Maud came out and chatted with us for a little while. I had the crab cakes and fries, both of which were quite good. My friend had the turkey platter, which came with some good veggies. I tried the sweet potatoes. Yum! The salads were a bit sparse, and my honey mustard dressing was kind of bland. But overall the food was pretty good, and the view was great.
Review Source:On my second visit, I liked this place more...and that had nothing to do with my being the "Duke" of the moment! Â Onion soup was very good. Â I had meatloaf and my bride had shepherd's pie. Â Both comfort food dishes were excellent, although the mushroom gravy was not fresh made, but tasty just the same. Â A hamburger was served as requested, and my daughter said that her salmon dish was also very good. Â This is a busy restaurant and bar with friendly attentive service and good food with reasonable prices. Â It is really a good choice if you are in the neighborhood and want a good meal in a bar like atmosphere.
Review Source:I hate giving this review, I've continued to try and keep loving Maud's, but even the quaint location and ambience of the outside seating area can't help the continuously bad/bland food; and this is after multiple times having such a bad experience.
The taste of the food, or lack thereof is trumped by the habitually bad service. Servers are always friendly, when you can find them. On our last visit, we waited approximately 50 minutes between the time we actually ordered and when we received our food. This was on a Saturday around 7pm with people having meals inside and out but it was nowhere near a packed house.
Our waitress never once offered to refill our drinks or our sodas which sat iceless and watery once the food arrived... instead, she was preoccupied with the table of her theater friends sitting behind us. Again, she was friendly but careless and absolutely uninterested in checking on us or any of the three other tables near us.
Not sure what happened here and we'd love to keep going back, but the quality of food and the horrible service just doesn't justify the cost in either time or money. Very sad.
I'm somewhere between 2 and 3 stars. Â The first time I went, I got a burger and a beer and was quite happy with everything. Â Great service, decent pub food, nice atmosphere. Â
The second time I went I ordered one of the specials and was disappointed. Â It was chicken with artichoke and tomato in a lemon and white wine sauce. Â The pasta was a little overcooked, and the sauce was too thick and really bland. Â My husband wasn't too impressed by his meal either - a slightly-tough pork chop with ridiculously sweet apple sauce and quite sweet red cabbage. Â Just way too much sugar for a dinner.
I'm looking forward to sitting outside in the summer; they have a cute little patio area with lots of hanging lanterns.
If you're going to go, my advice would be to stick to beer and burgers. Â Skip the entrees.
We stopped in on sunday afternoon for lunch. We were excited to see a solid gluten-free menu, and ordered the gluten-free pasta with vegetables in cream sauce. It was pretty tasty and filling.
We also had their fish and chips, which were a little greasy and felt a bit manufactured, instead of hand-made. They were good, although next time I'll order the shepherd's pie.
The service was spotty, which may have been due to the time of day, but was disappointing nonetheless.
Great friendly small town atmosphere. As town residents, we go most Monday nights.
The food is good to really good depending on the dish. Portion size is huge, we always take home left overs. They have a great drink menu- love the woodpecker cider- and really great desserts.
Their house salads are a crisp green romaine with extra goodies, unlike most taverns with watery iceberg.
The bread basket is a fluffy whole wheat bread.
Specials menu is abundant.
They also have a large Gluten Free menu.
I wore myself out with my friends in the city so we decided to take it easy in the suburbs for the evening. Â It was my birthday, and my friends took me here.
We started our night off with drinks. Â We sat at a table and ordered. Â Wine for everyone but me. Â I had a Long Island Iced Tea. Â It tasted just like every other Long Island Iced Tea I've had. Â Strong and tasty. Â A few minutes after we got our drinks our waiter brought us out more drinks. Â Chocolate cake shots. Â New concept for me, and I thought they were unique to this place, but I found out later they have them most everywhere. Â A translucent liquid (not the wimpy shots but the kind where it won't all fit in your mouth at once) with sugar dusted on the rim and a lemon wedge on the side. Â Take the shot, eat the lemon, get the taste of chocolate cake in your mouth. Â Well it worked. Â It also was more strong than my Long Island.
The food is good here. Â I sampled everyone else's meals and was very pleased. Â The burger was especially good. Â The waiter was very attentive and nice, I asked him to sing to me and after telling me that they didn't do that here, he did it anyways.
The 30 dollar lamb was on the dry side. Â I won't get that again, but I love the atmosphere here and the majority of the foods I tried were above par, so I will be returning here if I can muster up enough money for a nice dinner out.
