A large group of Yelpers came here to eat. As such, we were able to sample quite a few items off the menu and share with each other.
The tamales were the best I've had in Indy. Super flavorful, moist but not greasy, and the corn-to-meat ratio is great. The huitlacoche (corn smut) quesadilla blew my mind. It was one of those foods that I'd evidently eaten in the past without knowing what it was...upon the first bite, I thought, "Yes! THAT's what that was!" Smoky and savory, I can't wait to go back and order these again. Both of these were dipped into a sauce which I was told was "salsa verde". Between my janky Spanish and the worker's lack of English, I was able to deduce that it was some sort of puree of green tomatoes, avocados, cilantro, and lemon or lime...awesome. I crave it. I even took some home with me. For entrees, we had the quail, carnitas, and some sort of meat which was allegedly goat. We decided it might have been the head. The quail was delicious and tender, and my favorite of the 3. The carnitas (slow cooked seasoned pork) were very, very good also. The mystery goat was also very tender and flavorful, but had some weird membranes and tiny bones going on. I would recommend that only for the most adventurous.
This is not a large restaurant and it is in a pretty crappy area of the city (a block from the Rural Inn). BUT if you can get past that, the potential language barriers, and the fact that they may be out of some things, there is some seriously good stuff to be found here. If not, I recommend La Parada on New York or La Escollera on E Washington. Both are very good and authentic without quite as many issues.
This is a 2 star review mostly because I am vegetarian and wasn't able to experience 99% of their food. People that eat meat have a different opinion for obvious reasons.
But, alas, vegetarians beware. It's a pretty authentic mexican restaurant that sticks vegetarians with the same cheese enchilada they can get elsewhere, but without the fear of chicken broth rice or lard refried beans. I haven't verified either, but if i had to choose some place that the rice and beans were not vegetarian, i would probably choose this place.
Meat eaters, give it a try.
Vegetarians, keep on truckin.
Went here one evening when La Parada was too crowded. Â I was the only one in the place for most of my meal. Â I opted for the burrito dinner (I believe they were out of a couple other dishes that I was more interested in). Â Beans were anaemic and watery. Â Rice was mushy and bland. Â The burrito was just a straight up gristly mistake. Â The menu looked interesting enough that I might have overlooked something worthwhile, but without a sure-bet going in, I don't see myself returning anytime soon.
