I have mixed feelings about this place.  My husband is from San Diego so he was happy to find a mexican restaurant that reminded him of the food he grew up with in SD and Tijuana.  Yes, the entrees were quite good, the flavors were truer to authentic mexican food than most places we've been to.  However, the ceviche we ordered as an appetizer was not appetizing at all.  Fish tasted like it was freezer burned, so obviously not fresh and this unfresh flavor carried into the juices that were used to cure the fish.  The salsa that was served with the complimentary tortilla chips lacked spices and little too sweet.  Had they added a little more lime juice, cilantro and hint of heat, it would have been good.

Very disappointed.  Had a group of 24 people to celebrate 2 birthdays on a Saturday night.  I called several days in advance to make a reservation and request one of their small rooms which they said was no problem.  I called back two times, including the day of to confirm the reservation- both times had difficulty getting the person on the phone to understand that we already has a reservation, but ultimately ended the call being told we were all set.  One member of our group arrived about 15 minutes early to bring the birthday cake only to be told there was no reservation and both the small rooms were in use.  I have never experienced such a disorganized place- DON'T TAKE RESERVATIONS IF YOU CAN MANAGE THEM!!  After a frustrating wait, we were able to be seated and they did bring out complimentary pitchers of margaritas and beer for the group, so kudos to them for that.  I wish I could say things got better, but they were just incredibly disorganized.  On top of that, the food was not great- salsa was more like tomato soup with cilantro and overall things were just pretty bland.  When we were finally getting our checks, they presented the separate checks as requested, but then one member of our group had his card charged over $100 for the entire group!  It took FAR too long for them to get the charge reversed and he had to chase after them to get it done.  Those in the group wanting to take left overs ended up leaving them after multiple requests for boxes went unanswered.

Bottom line-  there are MUCH better Mexican/tex-mex restaurant options available in the beaches area, Mezcal is not worth it.

Overall, good authentic Mexican restaurant.  Margaritas were good and strong.  Slightly understaffed when we went but staff was very attentive and nice.  Food was fresh and flavorful.  Will definitely come back.  Boyfriend had the skirt steak tacos and I had the chicken quesadilla. Queso was delicious!

It would be a great venue for salsa night.  They have a large area that can be used for dancing. Maybe they'll consider it!

The servers are kind, the service is excellent, and the food is fantastic.  Don't expect mountains of sloppy, over-saturated, gross Mexican food.  INSTEAD, expect tasty food served in proportions fit for humans.  We've eaten at Mezcal twice in the last two weeks and we'll be back!
