Have not had the food here but it is a decent place to stop for a drink and look out over the fort from the 2nd floor. Â They usually have live music as well. Â Service is usually pretty slow but friendly. Â Get some pics by the water wheel. Â It is pretty rough looking but that is what makes it fit in perfectly with the the old city.
Review Source:Small, basic selection of drinks- only a few options for pitchers, all of which are light beers like Yueng Ling. Service was friendly, and the band was entertaining. The night we went there was a $1 cover charge which was bizarre- we had no cash on us, not expecting a cover charge at such a place, and we asked where the nearest ATM was- which he said he had no idea... We got money and went back later that night, and probably shouldn't have wasted our time. It's fine to stop off in, and drinks are relatively cheap, but there are several other options I preferred in St. Augustine.
Review Source:St. Augustine seems to be lacking a little in any sort of nightlife. We headed here after dinner on the recommendation of a co worker. It was a neat little bar. Wish they would have had a better draft beer selection, only 3 or 4 crappy beers. Wine was all Barefoot, meh I could take it or leave it. Maybe I should have stuck to liquor. Service was very attentive, so thumbs up there! Our server was always nearby to grab us a new drink. Bathrooms were terrifying. I recommend holding it.
Go Get Gone was playing while we were there. They were awesome! I don't know if they play there often, but you should try to see them if so.
Not a bad spot if you are visiting. I think they serve food, but I would probably only go for some drinks and to listen to the band.
Rustic..that's the word that comes to mind, and hopefully what they were thinking when they built this place is America's oldest city. It sits atop a waterwheel, like a tree house (as others describe) and is cozy and homey and intimate. It overlooks the fort, and within walking distance of many of the St. George street favorites. Offering food, drinks, and an overall experience complete with a view and live music.
We visited on a cold Florida night (yes, they exist) so we forewent the outdoor patio after climbing the steps and walking through what would be our normal choice of a place to sit and relax, to get to the indoor area. We met a couple friends of ours here, and they had been eating fries and drinking at the only table available. We were able to squeeze into a high top meant for 8 people after arriving, where only two were sitting. The crowd was quite mixed...everything from young college kids to older bikers and everything in between. Service was sort of slow, but the server did come back and check on us. If I remember correctly, they charged kind of a lot for vodka red bull.
But we had our drinks, socialized, and then the highlight of our visit to Milltop...the music. This was some serious talent. It was a bluegrassy type band, complete with banjo's, and cellos and all kinds of things. They even dressed authentically. I mean, not my favorite type of music, but true talent, which I can appreciate.
Definitely pop in here, check out the scene, listen to the music, and then go on your way to your next location. Not a destination, but a great place to stop between visits to other places in St. Augustine.
Def a fun spot to stop and get a drink while you play in St Augustine. It is in a tree house!
My best friend was dying for some Sangria. We asked for options and couldn't understand options so she shared she would just bring a menu. LOL! Come to find out when she was getting ready to put in her order she asked for a beer!
It was fun. It was inexpensive. Service was OK. It was a fun spot to hang out while we needed a break as we were making our way to other bars! :)
In the trees! Yes this is a big kids tree house... errr uh, tree bar! On top of the historic Mill, this outdoor bar and grill is atop a gorgeous view of St. Augustine. Right on A1A across from the fort, pull up a spot in this intimate space and throw back a cider to enjoy your surroundings.
The food is typical bar food, nothing fancy. It's also not a spot I would hang out for a long time but def a must stop in and experience. I love grabbing a drink here each time I am in St. Aug, it's like a tradition right before a ghost tour.
Beware, since it's in the trees and outside, there are a few insects that will join you... just expect it and you will be fine.
Food is Tourist-Ok. In short, nothing short of mediocre. The service was adequate, however I lost quite a bit of respect for our server and the business  when our server questioned the tip I left. The tax on food is different in my state and as such my tip was off by two dollars! So, I gave him the two dollars and he said "Ok" not thanks... Pretty crappy business antics.
There are  better places to go in St. Augustine!
Enjoy your trip!
A real laid back place with a lot of covered outdoor seating. Don't expect lightning fast service. Its laid back OK? Great live music scene with acoustic acts playing all day. Check out Don Oja-Dunaway during the day for some original acoustic music, the guy is a piece of St. Augustine history.
Review Source:Such a cool concept but poorly executed.  This tavern sits on top an old mill with a water wheel.  mostly open air and partly uncovered it's up in the trees with a view of the Historic Fort and the old part of town.  All good so far right?  That;s where it ends unfortunately.  First off their on tap beer selection sucks.  Only 5 to choose from and the waiter couldn't even remember them just pointed to the menu that he just handed me  Let's see if I can remember?  Bud, Bud light, some sort of red and 2 other mediocre beers.  15 minutes later he's back with 1 pop, 1 bottle beer and one tap beer and it's not even really busy.  We order and wait and wait and wait.  We finally ask and it seems that he forgot to place our order.  We ordered another round of beer and were told our food would be ready right away.  Our orders were all wrong (forgotten sides) and no beers.  We didn't see our waiter again until we were done and by that time, 90 mins or so we were so done.  We won't be back. Â
Side note if the management reads these, clean the mens room it's the most vile thing I've ever seen.
The place was pretty empty when my daughter and I got there, and we followed the direction if the sign that said to seat ourselves. My daughter picked a table with a nice view of the fort, which we were going to visit after a quick lunch. But then a grouchy server came over and asked if it was just us. I responded that it was, and she said because it was so busy, we couldn't sit there. I actually laughed, as I looked around and saw a mostly empty restaurant. When I asked where we should sit, she said, "Anywhere else." So I looked around again, and saw that most of the other tables seated the same number of people, and figured she just didn't want us on her section. So we got up and walked out, never to return again. I happily left a 25% tip at the place we went instead.
Review Source:This isn't such a bad place to hang out, especially on a balmy night when they have live music. It has a lot of outside seating, and even the bar area, which has a roof, is open air. It's right on St. George Street, and the view is of the river.
I think the solid 3 star yelp average is spot on.
I used to like this place a lot. Â Maybe my tastes are changing as I age, but the last couple of times I've been in St. Augustine, the obligatory visit to Milltop has been more of a chore than a treat.
It's still nice upstairs when the weather is good. You can get your drink and sit out on the deck and talk without having to shout.
We have ordered food in the past, but the experience was forgettable so we don't do that anymore. Â Out on the deck, everything you touch is sticky (probably the same inside, I'd imagine) and being outdoors in Florida, you're almost guaranteed to run across a cockroach or a spider or something like that. It is what it is. You can't fault them for nature. :)
We still make the trip to Milltop every time we're in town, just as we have done for years. Â But lately it's only been for maybe two drinks, and then on to other places.
Mill Top Tavern is a total classic. Rustic, laid back and right in the food and bar heart of St. Augustine. You might think that the place is going to fall down around you, and you might be right about that. It sure looks like. God only knows how it passes and code, but then maybe it is grandfather in.
Mill Top is very popular, especially amongst the tourists, so you can expect a crowd. But on the good part of that equation is the fact that with the crowd they are able to have various guitarists and entertainment available during most hours of operation. Considering the entertainment, the drinks are reasonably price and the food is pretty good too, though the service may at time be aggravatingly slow.
However, when in St. Augustine it is a true classic, a landmark, and a place not to be missed.
My experience gets 1 star, others may differ. Service was horrible, period. I live in Miami Beach and am pretty accustomed to bad service, but this place ranks with the worst of them. We just wanted a little snack to tide us over till dinner. Checked out the menu and saw they devoted 1/4 of it to nachos. Prefect, they must be proud of them. Man these nachos are about as bad as they come. Some Tostito's thrown on a plate with some cheap shredded cheese and a tiny amount of chicken. Three jalapeño slices in a cup along with some sour cream. What a load of $11 crap. Tourists, look somewhere else.
Review Source:I have to admit I've been here many times over the years. Â The service has been great, until my mom and I went here in Septemeber, 2010 and had a terrible time. Even the awesome view couldn't make up for it!
We had been sitting outside on the upper deck hoping to listen to the wonderful James Taylor inspired guitarist/vocalist playing on a Sunday afternoon while looking out over the fort. Â After ten minutes some guys sat next to us. Â The server showed up right away and helped them though we had been waiting all that time!
Finally, I had to do the "customer stands up and looks for help" move. Â The server was gruff with me and made some snide comment. Â
Things improved when she arrived with our drinks fairly quickly. Â Our appetizers were still a good ten minutes away...a chicken quesadilla. Â This was pretty much a waste of money. Â You could get the same thing from Taco Bell for half the price. Â Oh, and no napkins or utensils.
Back to the great musician performing. Â I wish we could have heard him better but the bartender from the lower outside level was playing his horrid reggae music (I usually like reggae but he was playing the bad modern stuff) and drowning out the live entertainment.
Next time we go to St Augustine and we get hungry for an appetizer I think we'll go to Taco Bell and take it to the fort for a picnic. Â This would have been a much better experience!
Myself and about 15 friends (tour group of idiot mid-20s Australians) had a great night here in the summer of 2008, on a Tuesday night. The location is really cool - the treehouse-type feel was what attracted us to it in the first place.
The liquor flowed freely, the beers even more so, and when the staff realised we were there for the long haul they called a guy with a guitar to come and play for us.
Better still, when he didn't know the words to The Eagles' Heartache Tonight, he let me sing as long as I tipped him two bucks. Now THAT'S entertainment. Thanks, Milltop Tavern!
Super cool location. The mill is an incredibly original place just because of the building.
The Tavern itself is OK. Food is OK. Prices, meh. Full of tourists, so their business is good, but it is what it is. A tourist eatery.
On occasion you can get some live music. Sometimes good, sometimes - well - interesting.
Not a bad place to stop for a beer on a nice cool day.
Unique and historical, this place has great flair and has a great location. The old wooden construction gives the building its own personality. The drawback, it is a bit of a tourist trap, the food is quite generic and a bit pricey for you what you get.
But when you are having a great time enjoying a cool beer on hot summer afternoon, sitting out on the deck, it is all good.
You can see San Marcos and the bay from the deck which is also a nice little bonus.
The Milltop is a staple of St. Augustine and it would be considered a crime to not stop in! Â The atmosphere is one of kind, the beer cold and the appetizers good and hot. Â I don't know if the hot dogs are anything special, they always taste good though. The kid menu is okay. I didn't get any complaints. Â On the weekends you can find a guy playing guitar inside and sometimes another small band outside. Â Neither is loud enough to be obnoxious. Â I have always like the Milltop, you just gotta take it for what it is... AND know that there is no parking so you will be walking to your car wherever it may be.
Review Source:I have been here only once while vacationing in St. Augustine. Â The food was not that good and way overpriced however, the location and the view are wonderful. Â I can't say that all the food was bad because the salsa was outstanding. Â I asked for more and they handed me another little container of it. Â I asked if they made it themselves and they said that did indeed make it themselves. Â I could see sitting on the deck looking at the fort and having a cocktail while dipping some salsa. Â Perfect!
Review Source:Service was okay, but $8 for a tiny jerk chicken sandwich that belongs on a kid's menu. Â Didn't even come with fries (also tiny and about $2.50). Â Maybe it would have been okay had it been flavorful, but instead it was just blah.
Go to this place for drinks alone, and maybe the nachos.
Horrible service. I think we got served one round of drinks the whole time we were here. So we left. And we probably could have left without paying since no one was around to give us our tab. The patrons this place attracts seem to mirror their employees, like the guy taking cover at the door. Loud, rude, and obnoxious.
Review Source:Well, Sundays on the bay - great - but I was here on a Saturday night and the place was about empty. I found out why. They have some guy singing horrible songs that he must have been making up as he went along as well as not being able to even carry a tune. Not sure if the 9 pm band was better, as I left after about 30 minutes, having ordered nachos which were passable at best................. Â so, food is terrible, view and drinks great - music lame at best.
Review Source:Record lows in Florida and I was on an engagement photo shoot. Of course we weren't going to do a Florida photo shoot in winter clothes, so we popped in here to take a few shots at around 2:30 PM on a Friday.
Inside, the mood was relaxed, and it was practically empty, but the live music was going on as always. The bartender had a great, warm attitude, and a heavy hand in pouring liquor. I like.
We walked around the fort, and did a little tour of the area, and then decided that we just wanted to sit somewhere out of the sun. Â Though many parts of Florida can be a bit tame when it comes to heat, Saint Augustine was actually blazing the day we were there, and the Milltop Tavern was just what the doctor ordered. Â So we trudged up the stairs and sat in the cool shade. Â But then even that became hot. Â You can't really blame them for that, however.
Or I guess you can, because their service was a bit slow. Â And they had an issue with refilling drinks, which would have helped. Â Once the food finally arrived, it was average at best. Â But the location - in the top of a treehouse-like structure - is pretty cool. Â It's just that everything else is so blah. Â It might be nice at night as more of a bar/club. Â Especially if it was cooler (temperature-wise).
Back in the day the Milltop was primarily a biker, rough crowd kinda hang out ( think Tradewinds). We went there tho cause back when the drinking age was 19 and we were 17-18 it was pretty damn easy to get served.
Buut over the years I've come to see its other charms and of course, the view at night can't be beat.
Once your feet have become overwhelmingly sore from walking the St George St shops, stop in at this place. Â Sit up top, if you can. Â Get a beer and watch the river across the street and the tourist climbing on the Castillo.
Less than 4 stars because the food is pretty weak and the service can be downright atrocious.  There is entertainment  but usually pretty lame.  Seating is limited.  The prices are decent for the space and again, the views are great.
