Went here Friday night and had dinner before playing. Must say the buffet has improved over what it used to be, and I hope they keep it up.
After eating wife and I went to play the slots and they are just as tight as they used to be. Plus the comps they give you for the money you play is a pittance!! This is the biggest reason I prefer to go to Atlantic City to play--they pay MUCH better than Mohegan Sun. AND you get ANY kind of drink you want!!
If you don't mind knowing you aren't going to win anything or even be able to play the slots for a while than by all means, go here. Me, I'd rather drive to the Sands or Mt. Airy

I really like coming to this place. Not much of a gambler but the restaurants and bars are great place to hang out. The shopping is great too. Plus free valet parking!!!

I never win, but that's just my luck.  We enjoy going here to eat more than to gamble.  They have a good range of food selections so you can usually find what you're hungry for at one place or another.

Go at least once a week to Mohegan, and have since it first opened as a racino. Decor is fine, layout small but fine. The problem is the casino slots. Not just penny or nickel mindless slots, but skill slots like any denomination video poker, keno any variety, etc. the payback isn't just poor, it's awful. I second some of the other reviews that say bring a checkbook cause one goes through money like water, at least as a slot player. The comps are low, for the amount of money in. Overall it just does not even come close to it's sister property in CT. No question machines will continue to get emptier and emptier if they don't adjust their rock bottom, almost insulting payback percentages.

I liked this place.  I liked the layout.  I liked the gambling options.  I liked the food court.  I was a fan of my visit here.  Now, keep in mind I visited on a Saturday night when the clientele was a little more well heeled, so your experience may vary.

    Well, there was one exception.

One thing I liked was that this place offered $5 blackjack.  I'm a cheapskate that likes to play for a while, and $5 blackjack lets me do that.  They only had two tables offering this, one in the non-smoking, and one smoking.  I had this bright idea that if I tried to get on the smoking table, I'd have an easier time as there was a crowd around the non-smoking table.  Believe me, getting onto a $5 table is difficult because they're popular.

So I waited at the smoking table.  There were less people around it, but all slots were full at the moment.  I waited... and waited.  The people at this particular table last Saturday night decided that they weren't giving up their spots at all.  They just kept playing.  They were going into their pockets for more money after running out of chips.  They were losing in general but staying alive long enough to keep going.  (And by the way, some of them were incredibly dumb players as I watched them take hits when they shouldn't, which is always the risk you run at the $5 table).

I had to play a waiting game.  I was debating whether I should give up the wait or continue.  I really wanted to play $5 blackjack.

An hour and a half later (yes, I kid you not), I finally gave up.  i decided to bite the bullet and go for the $15 table where a couple of spots were open nearby.  I figured at this point I didn't have as much time, so I'd go for some higher stakes and hope for a quick hit.

15 minutes later I was up $110 bucks at the $15 table.  Perhaps I should thank those people.

I cashed out $80 ahead.  I went back to the $5 table feeling very proud of myself just to see, and yes the same people were there.  I swear, they were determined to drop what they came with and lose it all.

After that, I went to the food court for a snack (see my Wolfgang Puck review), and decided after that to look at the $5 table again.

Yep, same idiots were there taking up the seats.  We're talking about 2 and a half hours later after I began my wait.  No telling how long they had been there before.

I wanted to tell the people that were waiting there to get on the table at the time I came back about my experience, but I chose not to.  Why make a stink?

Besides, I left with the satisfaction that I had $80 of Mohegan Sun's money, and I'm betting those people went home with much lighter wallets than I did.

I don't blame Mohegan Sun for any of this.  I just wanted to tell my story.  And now I have.

Update: April 2013.....weekly visitor to Mohegan because where else can an over 40 go to spend their cash?  I read that their revenue is down; well what can they expect?  The place still filled with "locals" myself included, and when I lose my $$$ I socialize with many of the regulars.  Realisticly, many "regulars" have stopped going as much.  Slots tight as ever; someone told me that they are stopping the complimentary soda, water, non alcoholic beverage service.  This would be a mistake in my opinion.  While I don't condone getting free alcohol, a soda is a soda, and a free coke or ice tea is a nice touch. On a positive note, the smoke seeems to have cleared up somewhat, and the wait staff is tops.  While a weekend night is a sure bet to see many "pretty people" around; during the week, the place is filled with disgruntled, nasty, in need of a bath (I kid you not!) compulsive, bug-eyed, gamblers.....YIKES!  Be prepared to lose and you'll be OK:)

Nothing special here, certainly doesn't compare to the Connecticut Casinos. There are plenty of machines and tables with a few restaurants to choose from. Since I didn't win anything, I wasn't too happy- but then again, I made my donation. :)

Great location. Lots of construction when I was there & it was bitter cold as well which made the parking in the non-VIP area (I am not a VIP at any casino) a rather brisk and too long walk to get to the casino door! However once in the place was well staffed. Lots of comps if you sign up for their card which is free as well. The only down side of this place I first encountered was the abundance of penny slots - this place has WAY LOTS of them! I am a quarter slots player myself - and I did manage to find a few here and there. Slots were generous in comparison to the Hollywood Casino in Central PA which are some of the STINGIEST slots I have EVER encountered (see my review). The fact that it is in Wilkes Barre is the main draw - as really there isn't much to do in that town after work!

I'm not going to lie - I was pretty impressed by this place.  I am going to do an old fashioned Pros/Cons review for this one:

    Pros
    - Very clean casino and relatively easy to find your way around
    - Plenty of bars and restaurants - Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, Rustic Kitchen, a sushi restaurant and a food court.  Plus, a few bars.  I thought the food court was a nice touch
    - $10 free slot play for opening up a players card
    - Plenty of table games and easy to find a spot

    Cons
    - Cocktail waitresses didn't come around too often
    - Almost no parking in the lot - we had to make our own spot
    - Biggest Con - there are no hotel rooms at this casino and I actually find this a major drawback.  I would have probably given this place 4 stars if they had rooms.

This is definitely a solid spot, and even though I don't live in the area, I would have to imagine this was a great addition.  When I am back in the area, I will definitely come here again and maybe even try one of the restaurants.  Nice spot.

Mohegan Sun is a great addition to an area with limited options.  Its clean, offers a variety of dining and drinking venues with some live entertainment mixed in.  I mostly visit Mohegan during the summer months on Thursday nights for what they call "Party on the Patio".  Essentially they open up the area near the horse track, bring in a nationally touring cover band and set up drink stands along the perimeter.  I would estimate that there are usually between 500-1000 people who pack the patio every week.  Age range is usually older than the average bar crowd (35-55) but its actually a nice change of pace from the rambunctious college students in other downtown bars.

As for gaming they have both slots and table games which have varying minimum bets.  These minimums usually increase on weekends to $10 at the low end but during the week $5 craps tables are a blast for the occasional gambler.  There are a lot of slot jockeys and grumpy old men betting away their retirement funds/social security checks but weekends seem to deter them from coming.

Their comp system isn't very rewarding and you need to wager some serious coin to get to their higher levels or even into their sweepstakes.  I'm not a big gambler so no big deal to me but that might be a sticking point for others.  I know I played at Turning Stone in NY once and they were sending me vouchers for free rooms and free play.  Would be nice to have some better promotions for the infrequent gambler at Mohegan.

Clean casino with lists of slots, table games, poker rooms, a horse track, and off-track betting.

It's mostly a big ring, with restaurants, bars, and shops on the outer edge surrounding the main gambling floor. There's an additional floor connected to the horse track.

They have regular live entertainment, and throughout the summer they have concerts from various acts or weekend festivals outside. They are in the process of building a hotel attached to the main building.

There is plenty of food and shopping within a short drive (about a mile) including an indoor arena for concerts and hockey.

Oh Mohegan....personally if it wasn't for this place my husband and I would have had nothing to do the past year or so when we were living in Wilkes-Barre.  It's a great weekend getaway to go gamble, see a show, or go to a bar or place to eat.

In terms of the casino, i've seen better.  I like the circular layout of it.  It makes it nice having everything within easy access.   I also like the Penny Grove situated off to the side so it doesn't feel/seem as smokey.  In terms of slots, they were constantly changing them out and bringing in new ones.  I like that a lot but most of the new ones were always busy.  Friday and Saturday nights were always packed but what casino isn't.  In terms of giveaways, they were always offering promotions and free play which makes it easier to go and justify loosing some money.  HA!  Overall, it's a fun place to go every once and awhile.  Oh...and a big plus was live table games...like craps!!!

This place has good poker tourneys, great restaurants, and slots which I hear have worse odds than allowable by law.  (That's right they pay the government fines instead of paying you).  Still I love this place, its a great place to go and burn up some free time and hopefully not too much money.  It has better food options than any other Casino I have been to.

Main spot for the area. Came here for "concert" at the bar. It sounded more like a karaoke. Casino itself is not too big, but pretty. Memorial day fireworks were the best ever.

It's a casino, in Plains, PA. Real tight slots. Seems like an alright building. But being from NJ, and used to Atlantic City, this place falls short.  No hotel attached to the casino, which is acceptable for PA casinos.  Paying for drinks, another thing that is unheard of in Atlantic City. Everyone seemed friendly of the staff that I encountered, which was it's saving grace. Way too small as well. Did not eat at the restaurants that are on the property, so I will not comment on them.

There are smoking and non-smoking sections of the casino.  The non-smoking section of the table games closes at 2AM, whereas the smoking section is 24hours.  The dealers are nice and helpful, played several different table games I've never played before.

If you're new, you can sign up for the players club and get $10 slot play for free.  Didn't stay long enough to grab a bit to eat at the many restaurants that are around (including Ben & Jerry's!)

It is a small place - many many slot machines, all of which I don't know how to play.  Still, a fun place to go, and chat it up with some other folks around.

Small -- it took me 5 minutes to walk around the whole casino & come up with the conclusion that this casino was boring.

The center of the casino is the bar & the casino expands from this point.  The slot machines & tables in the middle were smoky.  Even the non-smoking sections were full of smoke.

Tables were full, restaurants seemed superficial & overpriced, & there's nothing else to do there.  If you like gambling & smoke, then come here.  If you're looking for a getaway resort -- don't come here.  You'll be bored & have smoked filled clothes.

The casino is not very big - smaller than the one in CT.  A number of restaurants in the building as well as shops.  Fine for PA.  It is not Atlantic City or Las Vegas.

Wow! Never use the referlocal deals! You can only use the money on one machine! Also, the Breakers one have to be used in $5 increments.  Martinins are good, by some bartenders. Others bartenders are rude. I was never ripped off so much in my life! Bar Louie food is amazing. Parking is weird. Mount Airy is just the distance from Scranton, and much more worth it!

This must be one of the saddest casinos out there.  It was small.  We practically walked around in 15 minutes.  There's not really much to do here and it's mostly for senior citizens.  We were actually there for the buffet so it wasn't a total waste of time.  The food was ok.  Not the worst out there but I wouldn't come here unless if I was in the neighborhood.

This is my favorite of the cluster of casinos that have opened in Eastern PA.  I find the Philadelphia area ones depressing and this one has a more natural feel.  They are not as generous with comps as the CT location, but I believe that is because of the high taxes they pay in PA.  I did manage to get a comped buffet which was decent but not spectatular.  It's a little too far for me to go to more than occasionally, but if I lived closer it would be my casino of choice.

I've been to quite a few casinos in my time.  This was my first venture here.  It's awfully small, but thats not a bad thing.  The place is basically a circle with gaming in the middle (half smoking/half non-smoking).  There are storefronts all around.  The restaurants looked good.  We really just went to check it out.  The games looked good, and we had no problems.  The parking gets a bit tricky.  There are people following you around like crazy for a spot.

    When you walk in the first thing you see is an interesting sculpture hanging from the ceiling which looks like coal chunks turning into diamonds, { in nature diamonds are actually formed from coal- which is appropriate theme for a casino in an area of Pennsylvania with a long coal mining history.}

The second thing that hit us was the strongly Smokey air, we don't smoke so this was very unappealing to us. We don't gamble either we came here to look around at the stores & restaurants.

These are my favorite things about this casino, it has 'Wolf Gang Pucks Express' Wolf Gang Puck is a famous chef and this is one of his restaurants. This casino also has a 'Ruth's Chris steakhouse' which is very well known.

The mood among the gamblers was morose & no one was smiling, it didn't seem like there was much winning going on. There were people of all ages gambling and plenty of old folks

I like to get real drunk here and waste all my money on slots, thinking I actually will hit the big one.  You can't beat Five dollar buckets of Budweiser and ten free bucks of slot play on Wednesdays.  I just wish the place was a little bigger, but oh well I'm glad we have this place up here.

I make a day of it every time I go to the Mohegan Sun Arena for Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins hockey and this is ALWAYS my first stop.

Not as glamorous as its cousin in CT but the circular design makes for good flow.I never have trouble moving around even in the large weekend crowds.

A great feature of this casino that its larger, more glamorous cousin in CT does NOT have is free valet parking..It almost always visit when its rains and the free valet parking is a boon

One small problem: Sometimes the casino can get very smoky.I smoke but it sometimes bothers me.A small problem but a problem that prevents me from giving the casino five stars

3 CASINOS, 3 DAYS!!  Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs

Likes:  Food court area was cool, with Superman & Batman statues. Drink waitresses were plentiful and came around often.

Dislikes:  Casino was smoky but not as bad as some reviewers have said.  I've been in much much worse (Mt. Airy & Akwesasne Mohawk).  The machines were very crowded together and walking around crowds of people were next to impossible.

The club card offered us $10 for signing up for the first time.  Staff was eager and pleasant to serve us.

This was our first stop on our first day and we were semi-impressed.  Having never been here and reading some reviewers we didn't know what to expect.  Fortunately for us it was a Thursday and it didn't get any busier as it was very tough to walk around some slot and table areas with the large groups of people.  The slots are close and tight making it awkward to maneuver around at times.  We had some action on some Penny slots and were very surprised to play as long as we did on our $500 each budget.  We did no Pony betting and stuck pretty much to the slot areas.  The machines were tight but not as tight as our other two casino stops.

This ranked 1st on our list of 3 as being the best of the lot.

We would definitely return and try the Mohegan sun again.  I would probably avoid the weekends as our visit on Thursday was busy enough.

It's amazing to me that this facility exists in Northeastern Pennsylvania, a region not known for its abundance of entertainment options.

Although I find it to be an attractive building, It's not nearly as large or opulent as its big brother in Connecticut. This would be the stepchild forced to live in the attic in comparison.

Some of the reviews here are hilarious; hard to walk around? Are you in some kind of hurry to get to the next slot machine? It's a large circular room and one in five people is probably using a Jazzy; if they can do it, you should have no problem navigating. If you visit a casino and then complain that you didn't win anything, well, I don't think I even need to comment. They're called "one armed bandits" for a reason.

It is truly fascinating to watch people shovel cash into machines, stare at screens and press buttons - kind of feels like you're in an ant farm with a smoking section.

So why do I come here, aside from the hands-on sociological research? The dining options. There's something for everyone, from the feeding trough of a buffet to fast-upscale-casual Wolfgang Puck Express to Ruth's Chris (whose presence in the region I also find incredible).

If you have money to burn, a few hours to kill, or want to feel good about yourself, this is the place to be. Oh, almost all of the restaurants have excellent specials, all of which are posted on the casino website.

This place is pretty awesome. I love to go and bet on the ponies. The atmosphere is pretty good for Wilkes-Barre which lacks atmosphere at a lot of other places. You feel like you are on vacation for a couple hours while here. The food is also very good!

Eh, the thing that bothers me the most is the smoke - come on PA get with it, get more non-smoking areas or cancel the smoking all together - if it were non-smoking I would have rated it higher, but I can't take stinking.  Otherwise the place is nice with shops, restaurants, bars, places for dessert, coffee, quick bites, etc.  There is valet parking which is great since the place was jam packed.  Lots of bad hair at this place - LOL

I really laughed my ass off when I read this quote from one of the reviewers, "The Mohegan Sun is comparable if not better than some of the larger casinos in Las Vegas or Atlantic City."
Clearly that person has never been to either. Anyway, it's a decent place to spend a couple hours. It's the same typical set up as you'd find at other area casinos like the Sands and Hollywood casino and other places like Branson or the Indian casinos that pepper the Southwest. The restaurant selection is ok. I also wrote a review for Pearl, that was a let down. The buffet is decent, but nothing compared to the ones in Vegas.
I wish there were more non smoking areas. I like to go to Breakers but sitting at the bar with a chain smoker next to you sucks. Some people have no respect for people next to them. One of the best things I love about living in L.A. is that all of the bars, clubs, restaurants are non smoking.

Overall good time to be had here.  It has all the amenities you can expect from a major corporately owned casino including the recent additon of tables and great places to eat.  In fact, The Mohegan Sun is comparable if not better than some of the larger casinos in Las Vegas or Atlantic City.

I'm not a casino kind of person and have only been in two other casino in my life (Harrah's in New Orleans and Taj Mahal in AC) so I don't have much to compare.

But this Casino was a welcome addition to the Wilkes-Barre area. It bring a unique entertainment establishment to an area greatly in need of something other than the pick up/meat market bars and clubs. I've been there a few times now and had a lot of fun each time. I don't gamble much so the fact that there are only slot machines was fine with me. I woudn't know how to play poker or blackjack or whatever else.  (PA is currently trying to pass legislation to allow table games). Each time I managed to walk away with more money than I started with. Granted I never "struck  it big" and the most I ever won was $40, but that was $40 more than what I walked in with. One of my friends won $400 that night.

I am amazed by the people that sit there all night playing the slots. I think the new slot machines are boring. I liked the old style ones where you had to put in the token and pull the handle and the coins fell out when you won! That was fun!

The Casino is set up in a big circle,  half smoking,  half non smoking and the clubs and restaurants are all around on the outside of the circle with the slots in the middle. It's pretty cool and there are some good choices for dinner like Ruth's Chris, Puck Express, Timbers, and much more. All different price ranges.

In addition to the slots, Mohegan Sun also offers horse racing. I had never bet on a horse before but my husband and I went out to watch a few races and decided to bet. And lost. But it was a great time cheering for our horse to come in.

Bar Louie is a fun place to sit, listen to live music, have a few drinks  and people watch. Oh the people watching! You never know what you will see walk by!
Even if your not a gambler, Mohegan Sun is a fun place with more than just gambling. its a great alternative when you want to go out for more than just dinner and a movie.

I was forced in to going to the Casino last weekend, and I have to admit that the place is well built. There are a few restaurants and bars, and the horse track is fun to watch too.

Casinos in PA are only allowed to have slot machines, which is an idiotic form of gambling. So engineers design  machines to take money from people, and yet people are dumb enough to actually put hard earned money in to these machines based on the extremely low probability that it will pay out?

So slot machines were out of the question, since you either need to be stupid, intoxicated, senile, and/or morbidly obese to obtain pleasure by sticking money in slot machines. I thought the horse track would be pretty cool.

We walked over to the automated kiosk to bet on horses. There are a bunch of card slots in the machine. I'm looking like an idiot trying to swipe my debit card, when the attendant informs me that I need to go to an ATM and get cash out. Then I'm suppose give him the cash, which he will then provide me with a slip that I can use to bet on a horse. Huh? Who carries cash on them anymore? Apparently the type of people who frequent horse tracks.

I remember watching a profile on the TV show Real Sports about how former racing horses are sold for meat via brokers who send them off to Mexico for slaughter. I scoured the Mohegan sun website for information regarding the treatment of their horses, but there was nothing. My guess is that the horses are all operated by "independent contractors," and the casino has "no responsibility."

After the track, we stopped by the "Breakers" bar, which had a semi-decent cover band playing, but its kind of a weird ambiance. You have a lot of greaseballs there for the cheap drinks, and because Breakers is visible from the Casino there are a bunch of old grandmas checking out the band from the walkway.

I was surprised by the utter lack of beer selection throughout the casino. Its basically Miller Lite or Lager throughout the casino. They don't even have Amstel light.

Overall, I'm not dying to come back to the casino. It was kind of depressing to see all these people throwing their money away. Most of the people looked like they didn't have much to throw away in the first place.

I came back to Wilkes-Barre, PA to visit my very good friend and her husband. She told me that a Mohegan Sun casino had opened up in the area. I was curious, as I'd been to their location in Connecticut.

Pretty easy to get to and the parking is seriously plentiful. Upon walking in, I see that this place is one huge circle. There weren't many people there for a Friday night.  I was aware of a beer festival going on the area, although I didn't think it would have pulled this many people away.

So my friend and I pop into a few restaurants and bars and I'm pretty impressed. What is a bit of a disappointment is that there are no table games in this Casino. In other words, no 21, no craps, no poker....nada. Just slots, this place is a veritable sea of slot machines.
Apparently, Pennsylvania is still working on getting tables games up and running. I found this to be bizarre. I'm not a big time gambler, but the really interactive games are much more appealing than the one armed bandits.

Not a bad place for a quick, cheap diversion. May come back once they expand and get their table games.
