I really want to like this place, I really do. Â I like the feel of the place, it's seems like a place I would really like...I enjoy the decor, I like the old liquor bottles the use for water pitchers and the staff is friendly. Â ANNND they have Cheese Curds, nobody has cheese curds in Colorado!
But here's the rub, in a town with several hidden gems with fantastic food, the Motherloaded sucks in tourists like it's that giant vacuum from Spaceballs. Â So throw a couple quirky menu items together and exhausted skiers from Texas eat it up. Â I feel like because of this they don't even have to try.
The food is average at best...it's quirky yet uninspired. Â I've had the Western Burger, the Shrimp Po Boy, the Grilled Monte Christo, Fried Chicken Platter and the Chicken & Waffles...all just OK.
If it's just OK, why have I been there so many times? Â It's a good question, I think that after a long day of Skiing/Hiking sometimes you are just too weak to fight off that giant vacuum....
This place is on point, and I'm not just sayin' that because our waiter reminded me of Guy Fieri on speed (Respect, Austin).. Â
Wednesdays from 8-10 they have a whiskey special, your choice of Jamie, Jack, or Jim for $3. Â That's what I'm talking about!
Wife, who's a vegetarian, ordered a salad with goat cheese, cranberries and a vinaigrette that she was very pleased with. Â
The highlight of the evening however was the smores that you make at the table. Â They bring the graham crackers, marshmallows, a Hershey's bar, and a heat source and you go to town. Â I've eaten at a lot of restaurants and never seen something like this before. Â Very cool.
Avoid this tourist trap!
Terrible service. Food mediocore. The beef in this review is with a cocktail ordered off the menu. It was a sweet coffee based cocktail with a cherry flavored premium vodka, 3 olive vodka. The drink came out with 3 actual olives in it. After pointing this out to the waitress she scoffed and said that is how they do it (previously she told us it was indeed a new menu).
So idiot bartender, idiot waittress. Slow service on a not crowded night.
I was craving some crazy comfort food after my 7 hour day on the slopes of Breckenridge! We dropped into the Motherloaded Tavern for a well deserved dinner while trudging through the super cold weather.
The Bests:
-Coat hangers on the wall to hang your snow scarfs and snow jackets.
-We had to wait half an hour so we just chilled by the bar which is conveniently located in the back of the main dining area (I don't think they took reservations at least when we were there).
-I seriously loved Uncle Bob's Steak Loaf that I had for dinner with meat, gravy, mashers, and vegetables!
-Great service and overall awesome ambiance for both families and partiers.
Could be betters:
-Seating area can get a bit cramped for larger parties depending on how busy the place is.
-20% gratuity for just a party of five??!!
Stopped in for a quick lunch before hitting the slopes. Bartender/server was very polite and friendly. Had an awesome garden burger, one of the best I have had, which you can choose to load it up anyway you would like. Menu had a lot of great things to offer which made the choice very difficult. The fried chicken sandwich was also very good. We Would come back here again for food/drinks. Great spot for live entertainment.
Review Source:Excellent. Â Loved the atmosphere. Â So comfortable. Â Food was very good. Â Great beer selection. Fun place to just relax after a full day if skiing. Â They have a great selection of different types of burger flavors. Â I found that inovative and interesting. Â
Definitely want to get reservations during ski season as they are full and not a lot of space...But worth it to be there.
Great selection of creative cocktails and shots with different varieties of Bloody Mary's, martinis and spiced ciders. Happy hour specials available every day from 3-6pm.
There are 3 sections in the restaurant. The front has tables for food service and a small bar, the middle has a slightly larger bar with a few booths and the back has larger tables that are good for groups. The atmosphere was very laid back and the walls were decorated with vintage metal signs.
We got here at around 4pm on Sunday and most of the restaurant was pretty empty except for the back bar. By the time we headed out around 5pm, the entire restaurant and bar areas were completely packed, so get here early if you want a seat.
We only ordered drinks and tried the Loaded Hot Mama Mary and the Velvety Pumpkin. The Loaded Hot Mama Mary definitely had a kick to it and after I tried a sip, the spiciness lingered for quite a few minutes. Apparently they have their own bloody mary mix that's available for purchase, so if you like bloody marys this is a good spot to try. The HH special gave us $2 off on both drinks but the regular prices were pretty reasonable too.
Saw a review that said "hipster comfort food" and I agree. I had the monte crisco which was pressed instead of grilled and has french toasted bread "infused" with Cap'n Crunch powder. Â Might sound a bit strange but it was really really good. Just what teh Cap'n ordered!! I would go back any time I'm in Breck.
Review Source:Hipster Comfort Food.
They have interesting twists on food, and i was excited to try their fare. Each meat dish we had was cooked to perfection. The sauce for the Salmon Fish and Chips was great, but I think there is a reason I haven't seen this before. It was good, but not great. The service was very attentive, and the atmosphere was fun and easy.
This place has a great happy hour from 3-6pm every day. We stopped in on Saturday after my husband took a few runs in sub-zero temps. For $5, you can order a mini cheeseburger with fries, a bowl of mac and cheese, fried green beans, 8 wings, a basket of 12 mini corndogs with chipotle ketchup or 12 sweet corn nuggets with a maple-mustard sauce. My husband ordered the wings (buffalo or Thai style) and I had the mini burger. All was perfect in my world when out came my little cheeseburger alongside a huge pile of super skinny fries - the best! A good ratio of fries to burger for my personal taste :) I ate every last fry and my burger was tasty too. My husband devoured the wings and probably would have ordered a burger too if we'd stayed any longer. They have great drink specials too, with $1-2 off most beers and $2 off cocktails. My salty dog was $4.50 and they had $2 Bud/Bud Light specials advertised on the walls, as well as $4 shots. The small bar area is all the way in the back of the restaurant. It was not too crowded even during the Broncos play-off game. Our bartender was funny and friendly. I'll be back to try their fried okra. Or maybe the grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwich with potato chips inside. Or the sweet potato tater tots. Or the make-your-own s'mores...
Review Source:I came here after an evening of strolling around Main Street of Breckenridge to meet up my sister-in-law and some of her friends. They have a decent selection of beer, but nothing too noteworthy. We did appreciate the selection of Texas beers. The food was pretty much the standard diner fare, but apparently since it was the off season, the menu was greatly reduced. I didn't find anything there spectacular or memorable, but everyone enjoyed their food.
The walls are covered with pictures of mothers, hence the "Motherloaded" name.
July 2012
Context: party of ten including a three year old and a baby looking for dinner about 8 on a Monday night.
Atmosphere: mother loaded looks like a tavern with wood floors, furniture, a bar and lots of sayings and signs on the dark walls. Â They were having open mic night but not til nine. Front room has about ten tables, there is also a bar area.
Service: Â we were welcomed, baby, stroller and all. Two tables were quickly put together for us and the brisk but efficient waiter passed out menus. He was not particularly chatty and was clearly busy but he never seemed to be absent when we needed him.
Food: the menu is a mix of old time favorites like meatloaf, fried chicken and waffles and Mac and cheese, unusual burgers (like a pband bacon burger), and chicken fingers. We ordered a large cross section from a fish and chips, to a really excellent spicy burger with a catchy name I can't remember but highly recommend, the fried chicken breast pieces and the steak meatloaf were basic, flavorful and came with mashed potatoes, which were okay -kind of lumpy and weirdly dry. The meatloaf came with a nice gravy. Â The Mac and cheese is not Kraft like at all, with big elbow noodles and a rather light sauce that was good but not cheesy, not goopy either. Meals were served with little dishes of mixed frozen veggies. Â The chili was also quite good with beans, beef and not at all greasy. The finale was the s'mores which you cook at your table. Drinks ran the gamut from huge alcohol bombs (five alcohols, margaritas etc) to beer to a few wines.
Surprisingly, this was our fav breckenridge place and part of our group returned a second time.
This place is SO awesome! Â My bff and I retreated to Breck for the weekend to hike and kayak. Â She is from Atlanta and I lived there as well. Â If any of 'ya'll' have heard of The Vortex in Atown, this is the high Rockies version! Â If you're looking for well deserved yummy calories after mountain play, this is the place to go! Â We opted for cheese curds which have seemed to gain recent popularity everywhere in Denver. Â They were fantastic! Â I also had a monte cristo. Â I'm a pescatarian, so I usually don't choose to order this item, but they made it for me sans mammal and it was super tasty! Â Furthermore, their drinks are freaking stiff! Â It's getting chilly in the mountains already, so my bff ordered an Irish coffee which was pretty much a glass of whiskey. Â I had a Glenlevit 12 which yielded an equally substantial pour. Â
I can't say enough great things about Motherloader! Try it out during summertime Brecking or après-ski.
Holy Cow!!
This place rocks, seriously!! Â We had soo much food and it was all sooo good!
*Haystack fries w/ Cheese and gravy, yum! Â Beware, they charge for both the cheese and gravy although on the menu it appears it is included
*Cowgirl cheese steak-heck yes! Â Gives Philly a def run for its money
*Fried Chicken and waffles, very yummie...pecans and strawberry syrup made in house.
*Fried corn bread nugget thing-a-ma-bobs, vry good
*best of all...drumroll...
MAC AND CHEESE! Â Had it soo many places in chi, this is the best I've ever had. Â Magical topping of Ritz and shaved parm make it soo good.
Go here, seriously...
I drove into Breck after hiking Mt Democrat and looked online real quick to see who in town would let my pup sit on a patio with me so I wouldn't have to leave him in the car. Thankfully I found The Motherloaded!
I looked to fellow yelpers for advice and decided on fried cheese curds (if fried cheese curds show up on any menu you're looking at, you MUST not turn them down. Waistline be damned - fried cheese curds are heaven!!) and the meatloaf panini (recommended by the waiter when I asked for a tie-breaker between that and the Monte Cristo.) The waiter offered to let me use the curds as a side for my sandwich, which I thought was great - sandwich and curds are $9.95 apiece, so that seemed like a nice money-saver, but it came up on the bill as $9.95 panini + $6 curds. Not bad, but not quite the bargain I expected when he offered.
The curds were excellent... slightly chewy slightly gooey, good crunch on the light breading... couldn't ask for more! The meatloaf panini was average, if such a thing as average exists for a meatloaf sandwich. I was excited for more flavor than I got, so it fell a little short. I ate half with the spicy ketchup and half without... couldn't figure out which was better, but neither blew me away. Whereas I'm never regretful of the calories consumed for curds, I found myself thinking that, for the taste I got out of the meatloaf, something healthier may have been a better choice.
None the less, I am ALWAYS pleased as punch to support a business that welcomes my dog. I know it's a risk and a hassle that restaurants take on when they allow pets on premises, and I'm so grateful that they do! I was 2.5 hours from home and wanting some local flavor, but wasn't willing to abandon my canine hiking companion. Note - if you are bringing a dog, go around back to the patio with the blue umbrellas.
Service was friendly, atmosphere was great, location is tourist-convenient, and the food I ordered was half yum-yum and half good solid food.
*Also got to see a fellow diner get a flaming birthday cake shot which looked festive and met with yummy comments - so if it's your birthday, let them know!
Missing my weekly indulgence of Steak Night where I reside in Houston, TX, Â I decided to order the Gorgon ola Frank Steak, a marinated succulent flank steak with spinach adorned with a gorgonzola cream sauce. Or in other words, nom nom nom in my tum.
I can't give all the credit to the food because as a Yelper (not to mention, a newly Elite!), I have to share other elements to the (dinner) table! With that said, I have to bestow FIVE stars to the reliable and honest Motherloaded Tavern staff for retrieving my beloved camera and sending it back to me in Houston, TX! (I am usually an absent-minded, clumsy girl and I lose things all the time so to have someone return my missing items back to me is almost a miracle in my life.) Thanks, guys! Next snowboarding trip I take down there, I will surely visit your friendly faces again. :)
When looking for a low carbo option this place won with their Gorgonzola flank steak on Spinach.
The kids menu was not extensive, but the neat little twisting wax they give the kids kept our boy entertained during our visit.
I recommend reservations during ski season, but the wait was not long.
They also have a bar area in the back that was packed. Â Must be a local favorite!
I am looking for food after a long day on the slope, were barely able to get a table before the dinner crew onslaught.
Food is good, their fried chicken are finger licking. Mac & cheese are creaming is just okay. We didn't understand the rave from others.
Veggie on the other hand, are the joke of our trip: "would you like more crinkle cut carrots and peas?"
Service is great. Good place to stop by after a long day on the slope.
I was excited to try this place when I was in breckenridge because of the good review, but when we got there later in the evening their friers broke so we couldn't have any food :(. The waitress was so nice she brought us complimentary espresso vodka shots! They were amazing, I am even going to buy a bottle for my home!
Leslie, the amazing waitress, recommended Eric's down the street and apologized a million times. I was super impressed with he service we received even with the broken friers! I don't know if a restaurant's service ever impressed me this much before!
The ambience is cool! Everything is dedicated to mother, grandmothers, etc. the walls are all decorated with things, and the restaurant setup is cool with a higher bar and lower level dining.
If I'm even back in breckenridge, I am for sure coming back here for some food and drinks!
Happy Hour Must - 2 for 1 drinks! 2nd drink can be anything, doesn't have to be the same drink!
We got a round of 8 shots and a couple beers for about $39...That's unheard of in Los Angeles! We were stoked.
I would def come back to this spot.
Burgers avg about $15 with all the fixins. Make sure to specify "med rare" if that's what you like or else it comes out "well". The server didn't ask me and I forgot to tell him so when it came I wished it'd been med rare. Fries are thin, crispy and yummy.
Corn poppers were average.
Nachos are a great sharing appetizer.
Fried Twinkie was not as yummy as those from the OC Fair. Batter was overly thick. We could only take a few bites.
Very cozy and friendly inside. 2nd bar tucked in the back towards the restrooms. Live music certain nights. It's got a "pub-ish" feel.
NO. BAD SERVICE, BAD POLICIES.
Long story short, they don't give a crap about the service, we had 4 adults and 1 child, so 5 people and they charge an automatic tip of 20%. Apparently this is company policy. It is listed in the two paragraphs of crap on their menu that no one will read. Beware, because the waitress, Shannon especially, will not give a crap on how her service is because she is guaranteed not only a tip, but a GOOD tip... Um, that is complete crap, as was the service.
On top of which, part of my meal was forgotten and didn't come out until we reminded Shannon and by the time it arrived, everyone was almost done eating, she also forgot our friends drink. The service in general wasn't good, and Shannon never even stayed long enough to find out if there was a problem... why? Because she knew she was going to get an automatic 20% tip! FAIL!
The chicken and waffles sucked, you would think it would be stellar, but no, neither were good by themselves nor combined. :( The only good thing was the mac and cheese.
Overall, service was terrible and they must count on the fact that this in a tourist town and that the repeat service most restaurants count on doesn't apply here.
One Word. Cornhole. Stay with me.
Being a Cali native I was introduced to this tragically named drinking game by my cousins from Wisconsin. Simply, it's a beanbag toss onto a wood ramp with a hole in it.
Cut to my family looking to grab a drink somewhere in Breckenridge. We were walking down Riverwalk from the "Gold Dredge" Barge (Yuck BTW).
And saw a sign that announced you could play Cornhole here. We promptly stepped inside, ordered a round and asked to be setup to play. Little did we know they employ a Cornhole Master (A title I will never earn nor want).
Benjamin as he is known to us cornhole laymen (there is no good way to say any of this) set us up in the alley behind the bar. (see what I mean) Drinks in hand we proceeded to talk trash to each other and actually got pretty good. Great drinking game and Benjamin was a great guy. He plays in nationals in Vegas and people are QUITE serious about this. Don't believe me? Check out his buddies company! http://www.americancornh…
All weird games and names aside, the bar was friendly, poured stuff drinks, served the free peanuts to regulate booze intake, had foosball and pinball. They seemed to have some cool specials each night like all you can eat ribs and trivia contests, but we were not there long enough to enjoy those.
One star off for the late night DJ setup. In a weird spot and brought a bit of a douchey element that made me split. (Though I get why it's popular)
Cheers Benjamin and Co. for a great random night!
HUGE PORTIONS. Â COMFORT FOODS. Â DEEP FRIED GOODNESS.
My group of NYC hoodlum friends hit up this place after a long week on the slopes all over Colorado and it was a very good place for rowdy group. Â Most of our party ordered the full rack of ribs and they were oh-so tender but no one was able to finish it. Â Our appetizers consisted of chili cheese tater tots, fried cheese curd, fried pickles, and more fried goodness. Â
And for dessert, of course we ordered the deep fried twinkie. Â
This place seemed like a saloon which would probably be more party-friendly and rowdy on a wknd but it served its purpose for us on a Wednesday night wrap up dinner to bid adieu of a great boarding wknd in town.
Prior to this past weekend I didn't realize Motherloaded also doubled as a restaurant. Â I was absolutely famished after driving up from Denver on an empty stomach. Friday nights in Breck mean lots of waiting around for a table and this place was no exception. The hostess told us it would be about a 30 min wait but that turned into a 1 hour wait. Â My friend and I snagged some seats at the bar and had a drink and some conversation to help pass the time.
The menu is all kind of american fare but it seems as if their specialty is burgers galore. I chose the "Breck Mac" which is their version of the Mcd's big mac. Â I had a hard time deciding whether to get fries or the mashed taters since both looked good as I was eyeing the table dining next to me. Their fries are thin cut, my favorite! The burger was delicious and juicy. I did ask for Medium but it came out more as Medium Well.
Overall this is a great place to have a delicious and affordable dinner, and if you are here on the weekends perhaps stay a bit to watch the live music. Just be weary, they do not move fast here so expect to be here awhile.
We ate here for lunch and had a good time. Their menu has a lot of great-looking dishes and displays a quirky sense of humor (e.g.: The 'White Trash Russian,' made with vanilla Stoli and Yoohoo).
I had a meatloaf panini and loved every tasty morsel. Mother Loaded makes really good french fries, but thankfully they substituted a generous and beautiful side salad instead.
My wife's grilled cheese with tomato and bacon also hit the spot just the way comfort food is meant to: It wasn't fancy, complex or sophisticated, just gooood.
My daughter ordered mac n' cheese from the kids menu. Â You'd expect some garbage from Kraft, but what arrived was actually some of the best mac n' cheese I've ever stolen a bite of.
Our friend didn't want to indulge in comfort food and got a chicken sandwich that she seemed only sorta OK with. I blame her for going against the restaurant's stated theme by ordering something semi-healthy.
For dessert, we shared a fried Twinkie. Anything is good when dunked in a rich batter and deep fried, and Twinkies are no exception.
Came here over President's Day weekend with 2 local friends and my 8yr old son. Â My friends got there early and secured a table, which was awesome because the line was deep by the time we ordered. Â Happy hour specials were good. Â My 8 yr old son is a wing fanatic so we ordered those. Â The waiter initially said that special is only for the bar because they only have 2 friers and if everyone in the restaurant ordered them, they'd be overwhelmed. Â WTH? Â He went to talk with someone, came back, and the wings were placed on our table no problemo. Â
My son loved them - good spice and temp. Â I ordered the beet and something salad - it was terrific. My friends enjoyed their Cobb salads. Â The pinnacle of the night, though, was the S'Mores. Â Lots of marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers with a little fire my guy had a ball playing with. Â He was the envy of every other kid in the room.
Really fun atmosphere, good service. Â Bathrooms are shared with the bar and there was um, an issue, in the men's room not to be divulged but there were some severely inebriated (hyperbole) gents in the waiting area, so it may have had to do with that. Â The ladies room even smelled like a men's room. Â Because it was so fun, and food good, I'll have to let that slide. (Bad choice of words, but get here early when the bathrooms are still clean.)
Let me take you back to my college days, in New Hampshire. Â This band called Zox would play about once a month, for $5, at a small transformed church in my small college town. Â
And then, three years later, I headed to MotherLoaded in Breckenridge. Â The walls are covered in stickers. Â And guess what sticker is among them? Â Yep. Â A bright yellow Zox sticker. Â HOORAY! Â I don't know who put it there, but just seeing something like that made me smile. Â
And beyond that, this is the most simple, no-fuss food ever. Â And everything I had was delicious. Â We started with the fried macaroni and cheese. Â They come out in little triangles - I'm pretty sure they're just a frozen snack generic to their food supplier. Â But I loved them. Â The Monte Cristo was good, and I consider myself to be a Monte connoisseur. Â And then dessert? Â Of course, lunch with the girls could end no other way than with a deep-fried Twinkie! Â I actually think I prefer ordinary Twinkies, but the novelty of the idea was neat. Â
It's right on the downtown strip, walking distance from the shops so it's easy to stop in during a little shopping excursion. Â Not sure about the nightlife, since I only stopped in for lunch but the drinks offered sure were unique, especially to Breckenridge. Â
I'll be back!
One of the more unique bars/restaurants I've been to in a while.
The food is themed as "Mom's Comfort Food", check out Kelly C's review for an better idea.
All in all, the food is really good. Â This place is a bar, but the food is much higher quality than you would expect.
The jovial staff was in line with the rest of the chillness of Breckenridge. Â We even heard the back kitchen crew break out into song for no apparent reason during our dining.
I tried the BBQ Po'Boy (with authentic Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce) and it was wonderful. Â The portions were so substantial that it even served as a satiating boarding lunch the next day.
The kind of drinks you can expect to see here (a mere sampling):
      Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill
      Boone's Farm Snow Creek Berry
      Mad Dog 20/20
      Thunderbird American Classic
      PBR
All can be served in a paper bag, just like mom used to serve it up.
The kind of food you can expect to see here (again, just a sample):
      Deep Fried Twinkie
      Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce
      Shush Puppies
Savory Corn Bread & Jalapeno Pudding
      "White Castle" Burger
      Royale With Cheese
      Grilled PB&J
      Fried Okra
      Fried Mac & Cheese
This comfort food joint uses all vegan 'good' oils to fry their plethora of food. They have all kinds of crazy specials, such as:
* Free shots of Mad Dog at 4:20 and 5:20
* Guitar Hero Tuesdays
* Flippy Cup Sundays
There's more, but I forget right now. If you ever find yourself in Breck, check this place out!
