Myself and couple other guys from my office would eat lunch here at least once a week. The boss always picked up the bill and was always a very generous tipper. The food was consistently average and the service was fast. Then things started to take a turn for the worst. We were served our meals, the boss had breakfast as usual this time the beacon looked a little raw which he politely requested it to be cooked more. The server took care of it but it started to happen almost every time we went there with his beacon as well as everything else being under cooked. One day the beacon looked like it was put in a microwave for 20 seconds at best. The boss showed the server with that "are you serious" look on his face and she says "Honey, that's how it's supposed to come". That was it for us. Shortly before that episode I took my wife and disabled child there for diner. My daughter has to be very careful with what she eats. I ordered a plain hamburger for her from the rude crack hoe of a waitress that was there in the evening. Unsurprisingly the G.O.D. (Greek on duty) slathered it with everything. I politely asked again for a plain burger. The waitress, being incredibly  annoyed by the request brought the burger back.  Then I hear from the kitchen area in a raspy Marlboro tuned voice say to the G.O.D. "I guess this was sposed to be plain" and then "ha, I saw that". She came back set the plate down in front of my smiling disabled daughter and walked away without a word. I didn't let my daughter eat it. Requested a check and left.  This place is packed during the day I know, but its almost all elderly Des Plaines locals who's taste buds have long died. I would recommend that the G.O.D. From the day shift and night shift go back to pick pocketing tourist near the Parthenon in Athens. And I read an earlier review from someone that made mention of the nasty waitress that kept licking her fingers, I know exactly whom you speak of.
Review Source:It has been a while since my last Yelp review, but having a baby sure is a life changer just like everyone says.
Mrs. V's is worth taking the time out of my now busy life to review. We were at the Honda dealership across the street and while mulling over which car to buy we figured we'd get lunch. Thankfully we chose Mrs V's.
The service was super quick and the food was above average! The thing I have been thinking about since eating there 4 days ago is their french fries. I have eaten a lot of fries in my lifetime, but these french fries were the best I have ever had. There is nothing special about them, no special seasoning or sauce. Just plain old french fries.
Next time I go there my entree with be a plate of fries, with a side of fries!
Unfortunately, I have to revise and downgrade my previous review. Though the service remains attentive and breakfast items good, the dinner entrees I've ordered (the past 4 times), haven't been up to their past standards. Portions are smaller, and attention to details has been lacking.
The meat loaf special I ordered, during our last visit was so sub-par it turned me off from going back. Â It was (admittedly) the last portion, and so consisted of a couple of small, really really dark end pieces and part of a middle, with lots of gravy covering up the crime. Â Frankly, I would have preferred being told they were out of the special, rather then being served sub par food. The time before that, I was served a fish diner which consisted of exactly 3 small pieces of fish, and a short palmful of under-seasoned steamed veggies (I asked for a substitute for fries).
I hope they pay more attention to their entrees again, because I've been going elsewhere lately. Â I don't know if they have changed dinner cooks lately, but whatever has happened, I've begun to say "Meh," when the family suggests going. Â You're losing me Mrs. V's, and I've been visiting you for a long time!
the difference between Mrs. V's and other breakfast diners is the difference between lard and clean vegetable oil, gummy preserved glop and cherries in light syrup, bulk restaurant supply hollandaise and something that was made recently.
your breakfast is still made by a cook, not a chef, but the ingredients are 3/4 honest in a way that makes fried eggs or a veggie skillet with pre-shredded frozen hash browns taste like something you would cook at home. prices are average, which makes this place a deal.
when you order coffee they bring you a little hot pot, and it's good. you don't have to get your chest waxed or become a builimic to rid yourself of the aftereffects of the coffee here. you may drink the whole pot.
so let's review : food is clean and tastes like fresh food should, they offer some more adventurous and healthy dishes, the coffee is shockingly good, the staff is always wonderful, and it's in Breakfast Food Wasteland, Des Plaines Illinois. that makes it the best diner for a 10 mile radius. 5 stars!
Mrs. V's is one of those classic all-day breakfast places that occur throughout the Chicago area. Their menus are usually eclectic and inexpensive, featuring pasta plates, Reuben sandwiches, tuna melts, fruit with cottage cheese (does anybody eat this stuff at home?), attempts at Mexican food, and lots of dishes with Greek touches like feta cheese or  olives. Plus, breakfast, breakfast, and more breakfast, probably including some house specialty twist on pancakes or crepes that you won't see too many other places. The ever-present greasy potato-based sides and constant presence of coffee pots regardless of the hour will let you know when you've entered an establishment of this variety, even on days when there aren't tons of seniors or people arguing in Greek to clue you in on it.
Mrs. V's is neither better nor worse than many other establishments of this type. If you like them, you'll like it here; if not, you won't. For me, the things that set Mrs. V's apart don't have to do with the staff (pretty standard), the decor (interchangeable with that of competitors), or the prices (about what you'd expect). Instead, it's the little menu differences that make each one of these otherwise indistinguishable places unique. Here, it's the "California" option for your crepes, waffles, or pancakes (with golden raisins, dark raisins, and pecans) instead of a "cherry Kijafa" or "peach cobbler" option that you'll see at some other places like this. It's the thick pieces of potato in the hash-browns, the specific spices in the skillets that make the potato taste like home fries, and the assortment of breads they bring with a soup at lunch that have poppy seeds but not sesame seeds. Even if you're like me and don't eat 90% of what's on the menu, these little menu variations are what make one of these places feel like home, while others don't.
Miscellaneous info: parking can be a pain on Sundays, the lines usually move pretty quick if there's a wait, and make sure you speak clearly if you're ordering something with a name similar to that of another dish, because it can get loud in here and it's easy for a server to hear you incorrectly. They take credit cards, have high chairs, and have a small waiting area for times when there is a line or a large group waiting. They have a bigger menu and quicker turnaround on busy weekend breakfasts than IHOP.
Went in today while I was waiting for my car at the Honda dealership down the street. The service was very good and the waitress was friendly. I ordered the Southwest Chicken Salad and, while the flavor was good, there was almost no lettuce or any other types of vegetables. It was all chicken! In most cases I would have been happy about this, but I was looking for someplace a little lighter.
I'd probably go back, but probably not for a salad.
Based on some good reviews I stopped in to have lunch. Â The server licked her fingers to turn over her receipts, licked her fingers to pick up napkins, then with those same fingers picked up some food that had fallen off of a plate in the serving window and put it back on the plate. Â I will never eat at this place - that display of lack of sanitation totally revolted me
Review Source:For years, I've driven and either it wasn't open or I didn't have time to stop. Â So one Saturday morning, when wanting to try a new place with my kids for breakfast, we popped over.
1. Â STAFF: Â Fantastic! Â I've got a toddler and everyone came over to chat him up when he got a little loud, just trying to keep him calm. Â With my older two kids, they all chatted with them about school and stuff... so they'd let me look at the menu (it was just me and my 3 kids). Â Even the bus-staff was great! Â I was walking in from the parking lot and one of the guys was walking in, and was very friendly... held the door for me and all that gentlemanly stuff.
2. Â CLEANLINESS: Â Very! Â The bus-staff was on top of every dish as soon as a table was emptied.
3. Â FOOD: Â Tasty! Â It was breakfast, but it was good. Â I've had some pretty rank food at places that otherwise were nice, so for a normal breakfast menu, it was good.
4. Â SERVICE: Â Food was quick! Â There were other customers, but I swear it felt like we were the only ones there, I mean we placed our order and had our food within 10 minutes. Â
All in all, a nice experience! Â We'll definitely stop in again!
Mrs. V's is a great place for a quick dinner after work. Â The food is always consistent whether eating breakfast or dinner. Â Their chicken stir fry is one of the best for "snack shop" type restaurants and their soup and salad is always good. Â The staff is very friendly and efficient. Â I did try their new broasted chicken and found it to be a bit over cooked/dry, so hope I had it on an off night. Â In many years of eating at Mrs. V's, it is the first meal that I considered mediocre.
Review Source:Good solid diner with consistent quality food and service at a good price. If you order coffee, you get a thermos pot that stays on your table so you don't go dry. Â That was a nice plus but the quality of the coffee is not that great, just OK.
Choices of food is what you would expect for a diner: breakfasts, salads, sandwiches, dinner plates and daily specials. Â We sticked with breakfast and the quality of food was good but with no originality.
Ordered a veggie omelet with egg whites which was surprisingly fluffy and good. Â The Mexican skillet was quite flavorful and nice as well. The pancakes were also good.
Summary: typical diner, typical food with no originality, but good consistent food and service. Good food quality to price ratio: portion sizes are big for a relatively low price. Good place to feed a family on a budget and yet get good not greasy food.
Wow my wife and I gave Mrs V her last chance. Â I know this is just a basic Greek place however I guarantee u any of u could make better food if u ran this place. My wife ordered fish and chips and we believe these came from a Gordon's frozen box and I got a hot beef with gravy that came from a box. Â My three year old got a hot fudge Sunday which was the worst Sunday ever. Â We will never go back here as long as it's owned by Mrs V. Â I can honestly say I wish I could give a negative star.
Review Source:Since moving to the area, I have been eating about once a week at Mrs. V's, and have had consistently good food and service. Breakfast is excellent - my favorites are the banana pancakes with grand marnier sauce and caramelized apple french toast.
Lunch and dinners are also great. There soups have been wonderful 100% of the time, and my favorite entrees include: Greek chicken, BBQ chicken, and baked pasta.
If they used more fresh vegetables and had pie (or desserts), I would have given them five stars.
I have passed this place many, many times, but did not try it until today. Can't say why we never came here, but I am glad we did! Typical diner type menu, but fast, friendly service and  the place is clean! Could use an update, but,it is clean,so that is good.
Hubby and I both had the Greek Kiyiani-scrambled eggs, tomato, onions and Feta cheese served with home fries and a choice of toast or pancakes.I have to say, it was very tasty and hit the spot. Mom had a bowl of vegetable soup and a Grilled Cheese sandwich. We all ate like happy little piggies and had plenty of refills on our drinks.
They have daily specials and are open breakfast through dinner. I think we have found a new breakfast place. If you are in the O'Hare area, stop in and give them a try.
Mrs. V's is pretty much your textbook Greek-y spoon diner.
This is evidenced by the various "Grecian" and "Greek style" menu options but also by the slightly gaudy decor (I am not certain but I think that every Greek-owned restaurant is required to adorn their establishments with brass accents and mirrors.)
We don't come here that often but when we do, we stick to the breakfast items, specifically their omelettes.
Their omelettes are really very good (def of "good": light, fluffy, and stuffed with fresh ingredients such as sauteed mushrooms, fresh spinach, and off-the-bone ham). The accompanying sides are also really good, too, including their crispy hash browns (the flat, not the matchstick kind). Orange juice is typically always sweet and fresh but served warm-ish (you may want to ask for ice like I do).
The service is extremely prompt too, almost too prompt in the sense that it feels hurried (even when there are no other guest waiting to be seated).
Note to java lovers:
Their coffee isn't going to rival Dunkin Donuts, Caribou, Starbucks, or any other high-end coffee chain. It is pretty much crappy, tinted brown water with little - if any - coffee flavor. Most of us could make a better cup of coffee with sawdust.
Hearing that Mrs. V's is kid friendly made me question whether or not I should come here. Usually "kid friendly" means that little rug rats run all over the place, cry, break things and ruin my outing. It was a school day, so these said children were nowhere in sight. It was delightful. Either way, it probably would have been worth it to eat here even if the munchkins had been around.
Basted eggs were perfect, the American potatoes (something between hash/mash) were good, bacon was a little rubbery but tasted right. My father enjoyed his ham and cheese omelet and the pancakes. For $20 total it wasn't bad at all.
I have been to many diner's in my day and I would say Mrs. V's is the best. The food is awesome and well portioned, the price is right and the service is friendly and very fast. I recommend breakfast (the mountain man is the best) but their sandwiches are very tasty as well. For my money you cant go wrong.
Review Source:Mrs. V's is a great place with a family environment and the best breakfast this side of the Mississippi! The service is excellent and I have never had a bad meal there. I have been going to Mrs. V's for many years and their food quality is consistently excellent. I highly recommend this place.
Review Source:Now this is what a good breakfast is all about! Â Good food, clean establishment, fast cooks, and excellent staff not to mention friendly owners who are always on site.
I've eaten here on several occasions and have had something new every time. Â I love their cornbeef hash and the pecan pancakes. Â Oh, and the owner is so sweet with my kids. Â I love her too as do the kids.
Defiantly give this place a try whether you want breakfast, lunch or dinner. Â They have it all, including the cutest rooster collection to decorate the place. Â My son has a thing for poultry, I don't get it.
a great family-run place, perfect for huge breakfast/brunch: huge menu, fast service, large portions, reasonable prices. Â not a place to linger over coffee, though; they're busy clearing tables for the ppl waiting at the door. Â the omelettes are absolutely enormous ($2 charge for sharing) and they also offer egg whites. Â casual dress; large senior citizen clientele. Â they also take reservations for holidays (like mother's day).
Review Source:This place is right down the street from where I live. Â I have been there three times and all three times the service is extremly bad. Â The servers talk with each other and ignore what is going on. Â I will never go back. Â If the service was better it would still only be two stars.....
Review Source:I love this place. I've only been here 7 times but the food is great every single time. They have my favorite comfort food, Breaded veal cutlet with mashed potatoes and gravy, and it's so yummy. I have never had a bad meal here. It is also VERY kid friendly. I bring my kids here along with my sister-in-law's 10 year old and they have always been very accommodating. There is one time in particular that sticks out in my brain. My 21 month was having an absolute break down in the restaurant...causing a scene...wigging out...yadda yadda. So I took him out to the car and sat with him for a little bit. When I came back in they had put our food under the heat lamp so it wouldn't get cold, brought me tissues and pretty much said that it happens all the time and I shouldn't worry about it. Now with as many children as I have, this is the first time it's ever been that bad. It was embarrassing and they made me feel so much better about it.
There are some of you reading this saying" Just another runny-nosed kid having a tantrum in a restaurant" and that may be true but if it has never happened to you(and some of you without children will think to yourselves"not my kid") then you can't know how hard it was knowing other people were eating an having to listen to it. But the manager and waitress were wonderful about it and I couldn't say more about the class that was shown that evening.
They also have the best ham and cheddar omelet I have ever had. Fluffy, moist and cheesy! Perfect, not dry. That is my pick.
We were staying out in Rosemont for a wedding and wanted somewhere to eat breakfast. Â We went to Mrs. V's and found it very enjoyable. I had blueberry pancakes and my boyfriend had I think the caramel apple french toast. Â The staff was friendly and the food came fast. Â We were very happy with our meal and I would go back if I was out that way again.
