MY FAVORITE PLACE IN DOWNTOWN BAKERSFIELD. This business contributes to the iconic edge that downtown bakersfield is known for. Not only are the staff professional, but are extremely polite and personable. Although it is already such a success.....I wish it much more success and lots of love..
Review Source:Third time is a charm! Finally got to try this new place across from Mama Roomba...my husband and I wanted to try Muertos for sometime now, but the first time happened to be on a Monday night (but they on sundays and mondays), ah! :(. We tried a second time on 7/3, only to find out they closed early for 4th of July holiday. Just our luck :(
But this Saturday, on our third time here, we were seated promptly upon arrival. Service was friendly, but as the place got busier, the understaffed wait staff was overwhelmed and the service became almost non-existent.
We ordered the:
(1) beer battered mushrooms and white wine sangria to start.
the beer battered mushrooms were deep fried to perfection, crispy batter with succulent shroom inside, came with thousand island dip that enhanced the flavoring.
the white wine sangria was good, but lacked alcohol content. It had grapes on the bottom of the glass and chunks of fresh apples floating on top...
(2) My husband was excited about getting their burger as they came highly recommended by his coworkers. He ordered the Fernando Burger with an over-easy egg (all burgers and sandwiches entrees came with fries). He said the patty was nicely cooked, but heavy on the paprika, which may have overpowered the flavor. Â He had ordered the egg over-easy, it came medium and the yolk was not runny...(so essentially, over-hard instead)
(3) I ordered the Muertos Cheesesteak, it was a bit underwhelming = cheesy, meaty, but forgetful. I enjoyed my fries though, it came with a packet of ketchup.
Dress cool if you come in the late afternoon, as the lounge was probably a sutry 85 degrees even with the ceiling fans working. You might even be visited by a few flies if the lounge door is propped open to let in air! :)
Overall experience and food was 3.5 stars!
(this entry was written by my husband)
Excellent little place with brick faced in the front and brick inside. Â Has cool posters of performers who had played locally. Â They have wonderful shrimp tacos. Â The menu is mostly burgers, tacos, sandwiches, and salads, Â The beer selection is great one of the best in this town. Beers typically all $5.00. Â Beer from all over the world. Â There is one even from Lebanon. Â The cooks are right in front of you. Â They have a porch area that is covered if you so desire. Â The owner and bartender are very friendly and she made some great drinks. I would recommend this to anyone. Â It is located in the Wall Street Alley downtown off of Eye St. across from the historical Guthrie's bar.
Review Source:My boyfriend and I just moved to Bakersfield; literally, just. We got into town yesterday morning and of course my first order of business was to find somewhere perfect for dinner. Our first dinner/night out in the city... and first impressions are important. I had to make sure we went somewhere that would give us good vibes for our stay here.
Enter: Muertos. I found this place through Yelp and found the quirky appearance and simple menu to be just what we were looking for.
We were greeted and seated by the owner (I think...) who went over menu and drink highlights with us. She focused on the IPA menu (fantastic choices that rotate when they run out,) yet my boyfriend and I were both drawn to the various jalapeno/fruit drinks. Delicious juxtaposition.
We started off with the deep fried burrito (I'm from the South, anything deep fried is alluring,) and we were quite pleased with the speed and friendliness of the service. Not to mention the ballin' fries that the burrito was served with (Did I say ballin'? Yeah. I meant... BALLIN'.)
Then, main course of shrimp tacos for me and a gigantic salad with shrimp and crabmeat for the dude. Bravo again to speed and flavor. And great prices. And great salsa with the tacos. And just... yeahhh. Wow.
Instead of dessert, we ended our meal with a couple of beers. Great selection on tap and bottled.
So, Bakersfield, the bar has been set. My first dining experience was equal amounts fun, funky, and flavorful. I think this is a good sign for our new city. Everybody else has a lot to live up to now!
I normally don't post on yelp because it's full of pot shots  by miserable people who feel empowered by social media. With that in mind... What a great little counterpart to mama rombas! It is really transforming that alley into quite a gem. I've been in there a handful of times in the last few months, most recently with my 15month old and 1 month old daughters.  What you see is what you get, a small hole in the wall but the owner sure knows how to run a restaurant. Food is always great (where else will you find ahi and lamb tacos to go with an IPA menu?!)
Servers have always been friendly. If you're pressed for time It may not be the place as I'm guessing the kitchen is small, but if you're out for a good time grab a drink and enjoy!
This place has potential. Â I love the vibe here, the bar and outside eating area are really cool and unlike anything in Bakersfield. Â The drinks were the delicious, but the food left something to be desired. Â Very basic menu, and ridiculous prices. Â I don't mind spending a good amount of money on something like halibut tacos, but $15 and they come with that lettuce on top (much rather have crunchy cabbage)... It's just not very satisfying.
Update: Â I would like to say that I am NOT upset about paying $15 for halibut tacos. Â I'm disappointed at the presentation of the halibut. Â
My recommendation: Â come here for the delicious drinks. Â Eat somewhere else prior.
Awesome service. Â The owner met us at the door and sat us. Â The server was friendly and on the ball making sure we had refills and were happy.
Beer fans (particular IPA fans) will be happy. Â The owner brought me two lists of available IPAs and went over with me which were out of stock. Â Most importantly, the beer was served at a perfect temperature! Â No restaurant in Bakersfield seems to understand that these types of ales are not meant to be served at 40 degrees in a frozen glass. Â Glad Muertos got this right -- serving temp was perfect.
If they owner happens to read this, I might recommend keeping a keg of Stone IPA or Anderson Valley Hop Ottin IPA on tap. Â They're year-round brews that are kind of go-to standards for IPA fans. Â I'd be a happy camper if someone in town kept them on tap.
The asada fries were pretty tasty. Â I got the spicy burger with chipotle mayo (I forgot the name of it). Â The burger was amazing. Â The meat was moist and tender, and the bun was fresh. Â It was right on that perfect threshold of being punishingly-spicy but not so intense that you can't enjoy it. Â Behind the spice was a creamy and cheesy flavor.
Oh, and leave your water bottle in the car :D
Awesome!!!!
We were greeted and seated by the owner who was wonderful and our waitress was attentive and charming.
The food is delicious! I'm so happy we stumbled on this place! If we lived here we would be back in a second! Not a single bad thing to say about this place! Staff, food, decor, menu...all awesome!!!
Was visiting a friend in Bakersfield and she really didn't know of any good options on where to have dinner so using trusty old Yelp I did some research before going there, which is how I found Muertos.
Though this has nothing to do with this restaurant Bakersfield looks like an awful place to live. Muertos is located in the Downtown area and it is rather scummy. This place is located in an alley and unless you did some research ahead of time I am not sure how you would find this place.
Now that my rant is over on to the experience. Muertos has 2 spaces, an inside dining area where the bar is and a covered patio. After being seated a lady, who i believe was the owner asked how we found this place. I had told her my story about visiting from LA and finding on Yelp and she was excited to hear that. Praise Yelp. She mentioned that all their food is fresh and local, which was nice to know. She was no fan of corporate restaurants so right away I know I would like this place. It has kind of a gastropub vibe to it, with the brick walls and lighting.
They have a decent selection of bottled beers and a few to choose from on tap. I had a couple bottles of Chainbreaker White IPA, which I had never tried before. it was pretty good. Going to have to find this at Bevmo or something. Their food menu is rather small. Basically some salads, hamburgers and sandwiches. They also had some appetizers listed. The waitress informed us of some specials they were having that day, one of which was a 12oz Ribeye, which is what I decided to order. I found the steak to be very flavorful. No, it wasnt a Prime cut of meat but I wasnt expecting that from a place that is not a steakhouse. I rarely eat red meat and this satisfied my craving. My friend ordered chicken tacos and she said they were good. I will have to take her word for it.
This was a great place to eat at on my trip to Bakersfield. If I ever come back I would certainly stop here again.
My husband and I went here for our date night and we were both really impressed. We made a reservation 7:30 on a Friday and they were busy but the restaurant wasn't completely packed. We were seated in the patio area which was nice and cool from the fans they had on. The inside of the restaurant was warm but hopefully they have ac for those hot Bakersfield summers.
We started off with the mushrooms since that's what most yelpers raved about. Wow! These are the best fried mushrooms we've had anywhere. You can tell that they're freshly breaded not frozen. The dipping sauce they serve with them is great too. Â We also shared the carne asada fries. While they were ok, I wouldn't order them again. They tasted a bit under seasoned but any bite with garlic was good. Both apps were good portions, enough for four people to share.
For our entree we couldn't decide between the Fernando burger and the Hudson so the waitress said we could combine them both. Husband said its the best burger he's ever had and I have to agree. The meat was perfectly cooked and seasoned, the bacon crispy, vegetables were fresh and the jalapeños were absolutely delicious. We probably wouldn't order it with the egg next time just because we couldn't really taste it. I thought it would be a bit runny but it was cooked completely and didn't really add anything to the burger. It came with fries which I didn't have many of because I was stuffed but I'm not really a fan of them anyway. I know it's the nostalgia to have frozen drive-in fries but some onion rings or sweet potato fries would be awesome with such a great burger.
I had to try both the blood orange jalapeño margarita and the red sangria. Both were excellent and I'd definitely order them again. Husband was very excited to find Victoria on tap and it was really cold.
Muertos is definitely out new favorite in town so we'll be back again.
Love this place! Nice casual atmosphere. I like that you can pretty much order anything you want and if they have it they will make it. I love the machaca tacos but wanted the meat in a salad and they whipped it up for me. Haven't had anything here I didn't like. Great beer selection and fun cocktails (even though there isn't real booze in them, but hey a liquor license is expensive! =)
The staff is always nice. Can be slow but I don't mind since I know the food is worth the wait.
The only thing I wish was a bit stronger here was their dinner plates. Instead of "we have this meat/fish and will service it with rice and a veg" maybe a little more development could make for some great specials.
The service was great and friendly. My husband liked their beer selections and I really enjoyed my red wine sangria. Dessert was also very good especially with the dewars ice cream that they serve. We didn't enjoy our food so much though. I ordered muertos cheesesteak and he had the burger with the fried egg and added jalapeños. The meat in the cheesesteak was very salty & the bread was a little soggy. I finished it though because I was hungry. I also downed a glass of water to help offset the saltiness. My husband enjoyed the patty and egg components of his burger, but the bun was too hard from over toasting. Also the bacon strips were kind of burned.  I don't think that's how they normally serve their burgers because many reviewers have enjoyed them so maybe it was just an off day. He ended up eating his burger with a knife and fork.  Maybe next time we will try the tacos instead.
Review Source:Drafting this review based on my first visit (I've been there a couple more times since): Shawna the owner was very pleasant in conversation. She definitely knows what she's doing and Muertos has her experience behind the vibe. I love that Muertos has a different drink menu than everyone else in Bako. I tried the blood orange jalapeno margarita because ive heard positive reviews: light on the alcohol side but that's just my opinion. But to add a selection of good wines and different IPA beer sets them apart from everyone else. I didn't want a heavy dinner so I had the goat cheese salad (Chupacabra) Â topped with seared ahi and balsamic vinaigrette and it was great. I could do with less pepper corns on the seared ahi, but would definitely order that salad again. Also worth noting is their halibut "salsa". Love this place.
Review Source:Love me some Muertos! Â This place is the new place in town to see and be seen! Â And, visually it's so different and interesting than anywhere else! Â Located in Wall St alley across and a little down from the Alley Cat bar you'll find this little gem on the north side of the street. Â You walk into a loft-like space with bare brick on the walls, fantastic bar, open kitchen, and closed in patio in the back. Â Get there early, the place fills up rather quickly around dinner time, especially on weekends!
The mixed drinks are fantastic and they serve them up in large glasses! Â Easily some of the best sangria in town, if you're a fan. Â They serve up both white and red sangria too, to meet your preferences. Â I also sipped on a pomegranate margarita that was adorned with pomegranate seeds and some orange zest on top! Â It was delicious. Â They also have a pineapple serano margarita and a blood orange jalapeno margarita. Â Man, if my tongue wasn't so damn sensitive to heat you could bet I'd order one of those. Â I also love places that experiment with flavor like that! Â Also, if you are a specialty beer fan, they have some interesting unique ones. Â In addition, if you're an IPA lover they have a whole menu devoted to them! Â
As far as the food, I'm not going to lie, it's been a bit up and down for me. Â I do like their tacos, but their meat last time seemed to be a little dry. Â Their chupacabra salad is delicious though. Â Their popcorn pork is alright. Â And, it's a special order item, but if you ask they will serve you up some fantastic chips and guacamole. Â Next time there, I will be trying a burger. Â I've heard great things!
Love Muertos and my wish is that it continues to thrive in the downtown area!
The food was incredible.
The service was great.
The atmosphere was absolutely delightful.
Will be coming back for another Hudson burger!
If there was anything I could nitpick about my experience here tonight,it was the single waitress they had on staff(I went around 6:30pm on a Tuesday)
She was as pleasant as could be,but I fear that given the number of tables she was juggling alone, she was unable to deliver perfect service.I never did get a refill on my water or the girlfriend wasn't offered another Sangria(which was amazing by the way).
But it's not her fault, with the attention split so many times, I could see her forgetting the minor details that could earn her a bigger tip.I know I don't look like much, but when I go out with the girlfriend,I make sure I have enough money for dessert and a generous tip well above the "double the tax" standard.
The chefs certainly did their job to perfection,as the burger was moist and juicy. The combination of the bacon and fried egg gave the burger a taste that can only be described as transcendent when compared to other burger joints (such as Juicy Burger or Moo Creamery). The fries were nice and crisp, and although I speculate them to being frozen french fries, they were seasoned very well and were moist enough to eat alone(but a little ketchup never hurt either).
Here's the kicker, they have Dewar's ice cream available! It is my girlfriends favorite treat in all of Bakersfield and the fact that it is readily available as a scoop on top of a brownie,or in a sunday by itself is proof enough that Muerto's understands the residents of this fair town. They also serve other desserts from the famous Smith's bakeries if you're into pie.
I'm very happy to know that such a fantastic eatery opened up in our downtown area.Place it up against Jerry's Pizza and Enso Sushi for a wonderful dining experience downtown and you'll have a very difficult time deciding who gets your money!
Be happy Bakersfield, and be proud Muerto's! I can see you going very far in this town and hope you continue to serve wonderful food with a genuine smile in this town for ages to come.
Swung by on Friday night anxious to try something different than the usual chain fare so popular in Bakersfield. Started off with some beer battered mushrooms which were served crispy, hot and with a side of some tangy chipotle mayonnaise. They were amazing! I had a glass of wine and my wife had a pineapple margarita with freshly sliced serrano chile peppers mixed in the glass. She said it was perhaps one of the best drinks she's ever had. Next up the entrées: We both had the 14oz New York steak served with stir fried green beans and mushrooms with a heaping helping of their famous garlic fries. The steak was perfectly cooked (medium) and the fries and veggies were hot and crispy. This has become my favorite restaurant in town. We will be back soon to try the muertos cheese steak or perhaps one of the great looking burgers.
Review Source:I had the pleasure of eating here once, before a show at the Fox Theater. Unfortunately, they've not been open when I've had the craving again. Closed Sundays and Mondays, and no lunch service on Saturday. I finally got the chance to head downtown last night. After finding a parking spot and walking down the alley, I encountered a sign on the door stating they were short staffed. As my companion and I waited to be seated, we were told they were not taking any more business for the night. I expressed my disappointment in once again not being able to dine at Muertos to which the owner replied, "I can't help life."
No ma'am, apparently you can't.
Muertos is one of my favorite new restaurants in town! It has a really cool and laid back atmosphere, perfect for enjoying a drink after the work day. Their speciality house cocktails/margaritas are amazing!
The food here is also pretty spot on. Burgers are seasoned well and the fries are old school drive-thru style. Muertos is definitely a great new addition to the downtown Bakersfield area.
I so wanted to like this place but left greatly disappointed.
I have heard many discuss how wonderful Muertos is but wow what a bad night. The waiter completely messed up our order and forgot the appetizers. Service was extremely slow, drinks were forgotten and the food took 45min. Â then served barely warm. I heard many comments as to why there were issues but in the end there was no real sincerity, sympathy or even a gesture to make good a wrong which would have been all the difference. Yes, bad days do occur but you have to own them and take responsibility. I wish you well but won't be back.
One of my favorite places to have dinner and drinks! Â I work Downtown, and couldn't be happier that they're doing so well! Â Its has a cool location, (Wall Street Alley) the inside aesthetics are awesome, (love the brick walls) and the food is damn good. Â
Having had my fair share of meals here, I'm always impressed with the food and service consistency. Â I'm also a fan of IPAs, and they have a great evolving selection available. Â
Tip: Â Get the beer battered mushrooms! Â You can thank me later!
Went for lunch. Got the battered mushrooms and the Fernando burger. The mushrooms were insanely delicious and the burger was really good too. Server was sweet and even though sodas there are canned you get free refills. I was really impressed with that!
Love this place, will come back!
----I apparently wrote a draft I'd never finished, but since this lunch written about in Oct, 2012, I have gone back at least 5 times to Muertos, if not more. We've taken many friends/family members. Everyone either likes it or loves it.
Some other menu favorites:
Chicken Okra Soup
My husband gets the Fernando burger with bacon and egg on it, he craves it all the time.
The tacos are great but small, so only get if you want a lighter meal or want to try a few things.
I once got a dish that I didn't really love and they bent over backwards to get me something else quickly. They were really generous and kind about it. I really appreciate that kind of service.
Lastly, never go starving. Since they make everything from scratch practically it takes a little bit of time to get your food, especially if they are busy, which they are a lot these days.
Took part of my team here for a celebration lunch. Â Grabbed a table for the 7 of us on the patio (with covers and heaters) and had a great time. Â Tacos were VERY tasty (tried one of the guy's asada tacos...going back for my own soon). Â Loved the halibut salsa, which is in essence a halibut cevice. Â The fried mushrooms were yummers too. Â The only thing that could have made it better was if we could have had a few margaritas or mojitos with our food (we were on company time...dang you company policies!!!!). Â Service was great and attentive. Â We will be back!
NOTE: if you go with a large party, be prepared to be seated in the patio area. Â Even in this cold, it wasn't bad with the cover and heaters they have. Â I actually thought it was nice to have a little fresh air going while you eat. Â Just sayin...
Staff was great and very helpful. Decor and the ambiance is also great. I went with four people and this is what was ordered and what we thought about it.
Fernando Burger: very hot and good
Muerto Cheese Steak: It was good. I would prefer more meat and cheese but very  tasty.
Chile Verde Nachos: good, be better with more cheese
Garlic Fries: Now my buddies and I read reviews about this and it was disliked. Well we liked ours.
Beer batter mushrooms: good
Halibut ceviche: it tasted like it was missing something. Not enough halibut and the flavor is bland.
White and Red Sangria: awesome
ghost in mens restroom lol
Loved the fact that this place brings some fun to an area of downtown. The alley has transformed and I hope that other businesses follow what Muertos is trying to do! Anyway, onto the rest of the review...
Made a reservation the day of an had no problems getting in at 6pm. The person that I spoke to on the phone was very polite and let me know that First Friday was going on (and I totally forgot!), so thank you!
Loved the interior! It was very cozy, quaint, and they had a lot of really cool artwork throughout the place. The exposed, old bricks gave it such a nice feeling. We decided to eat on the covered patio and I didn't realize how dark it was until I couldn't really see the menu that well. I wish I had stayed in the restaurant part because it was much brighter.
Our drinks were AMAZING! I loved their signature Blood Orange Jalapeño Margarita, also had the Pineapple Serrano Pepper Margarita, and their red Sangria. Yes, I indulged a bit but it was my birthday so I allowed it! ;) They were all really cool twists on classics and I am SO GLAD they don't serve their drinks blended! That kills a margarita for me!
We ordered a bunch of appetizers, the Beer Battered Mushrooms and the Carne Asada Fries were the best thing we tried. My Fiancé and I split the Muertos Cheesesteak and it was SO delicious! After I took one bite, I wished we had not split this one because it was so good, I was very surprised.
I wanted to note that the staff was very attentive, friendly, funny, and welcoming. We also met the owner on the way out and that really surprised me because I have NEVER met an owner of a restaurant before and she was also all of the descriptive words above. I wanted to give her a shout out for making my birthday such a great experience! THANK YOU!!!
No change in stars here. Â I came back for the food and was not dissapointed. Â
We ordered the pork poppers to start and those were all right. Â I would probably find something else on the starters menu next time (and yes, there will absolutely be a next time!) Â
To drink: white wine sangria. Â It is true what they say, the sangria is awesome! Â My white sangria had apples and oranges in it that gave it a refreshing, crisp, and delicately sweet flavor.
For dinner, I ordered the Muertos Cheesesteak and my dining compadres ordered the rib-eye steak with blue cheese fries. Â The flavor of the cheesesteak was great, however, I wish it was more cheesy. Â The texture of the carne asada could've been more tender, but not really any complaints here. Â Needless to say, I was eyeing the rib-eyes across the table since they looked like they were cooked to perfection (medium-rare).
Again, it must be said that the atmosphere here is truly phenomenal and the service was just incredible. Â I just love the old exposed brick walls and their back patio is still perfect for dining, even in the winter. Â They have heaters and citronella to keep the mosquitos away. Â Our waitress was attentive and patient the entire 2.5 hours we were there.
Hear, hear for this one-of-a-kind Bakersfield gem!
Love the atmosphere! Love the staff! Love the sangria (some the best sangria I've had anywhere). The food, though exotic (swordfish tacos?) is only so-so. The fish tacos are decent, but nothing epic. Their burger was WAY over-seasoned (it was like licking a salt-block). Their fried burrito is just that--a Costco-tasting, possibly frozen burrito (you know the ones, you get a dozen in a bag) battered and fried. Again, not terrible food but certainly not great.
However, everything else about this place is great. I love the restaurant itself. The staff is super nice and welcoming. Now I just go there for drinks (before I grab dinner somewhere else).
I really like this place. Â The service is great and the food is delicious...not to mention that the blood orange jalapeno margarita rocked! Â It was so fresh tasting. Â What an innovative idea. Â
We had appetizers and drinks, which consisted of the halibut ceviche and the beer battered mushrooms. Â Good thing too because both dishes contained generous portions and were absolutely yummy! Â If you haven't been there yet, you don't know what you're missing.
Only one suggestion - The chips were warm and delicious, but they should be a little thicker. Â I say that because they kept breaking when I tried to scoop the ceviche. Â Other than that...everything was awesome!
Finally made it into this place, Â went around 8:00 on Thursday, Â there was only one other couple in the place, Â TJ created us and told us about the specials and took our drink orders. Â Our server Sara was awesome, Â I actually recognized her from junior high and funny enough, she still remembered my name.. Â She is just a great server.. Â The food. Â we ordered the mahi mahi and halibut tacos with some fries and a couple of IPA's. Â My halibut tacos where fantastic, great flavor. Â I found the mahi mahi was a little bland. Â Adding some of the salsa verde did help. Â The fries are just plain old frozen fries.. Â Its a shame that a place like this doesn't fry up some fresh fries.. Â Sweet potato fries would also be nice... Â The place is just cool and I will be back to try some of their burgers and other specials.
I did find the prices to be a little high for the amount of food received. Â One reccomendation that I have is to maybe have a specials board because it seemed like the specials far exceeded the simple menu and it was hard to remember everything.
Located on the Wall Street Alley, Muertos is a cozy little restaurant with a decent sized outdoor patio and dang good food. My husband and I like  to sit at the bar where you can watch the cooks prepping and cooking. The noise level is perfect for me....quiet but not so quiet as to not facilitate private conversations with friends. There's generally some neutral background music on.
We've been here quite a few times now, and I can honestly say my experience has been consistently excellent. I've tried the tacos, the burgers and the Muerto's Cheesesteak (my favorite) and every time I've more than impressed with the quality, freshness and excellent flavor.
I've been helped by two waitresses at different times and both were super attentive and generally friendly and happy to chat with you. Â I've never felt rushed or ignored... always well taken care of.
Also, the owner is always there, working and making sure everyone has a good experience. You almost feel like you're an invited guest in her home kitchen. She's obviously put her heart and soul into the place and it really shows. The decor is beginning to come together with new pieces added all the time. The other day I noticed a gorgeous armoire of some kind on the back wall that definitely tied in to the Muertos theme well.
The menu is small but I actually think that's generally a good thing. It's better to focus on a few items and make them really well and Muertos does just that. I've never had a bad meal here.
Muertos is one of my favorite Bakersfield's restaurants for lunch. I highly recommend you visit downtown and give this place a shot if you haven't already. Try one of the signature drinks and let me know what you think. I'll be back soon to try one myself.
I deided to check this place out after treating my husband to a movie at the Maya Theater downtown. Â We arrived around 4:45 and the place was empty. Â By the time we finished eating people started arriving and it was filling up fairly quickly.
We have been looking for a replacement for our previous favorite of El Adobe Mexican Restaurant so we have been checking various places out with no real positive results so far. Â And as usual there are a number of pluses and minuses as there is with every new place we try.
Pluses were:
1. Â great service
2. Â very tasty food i.e. good flavors
3. Â good quality i.e. freshness, etc.
Minuses were:
1. Â small portions i.e. for $13 our halibut salsa should have had more fish in it (but the chips were great and we were told they made them there)
2. Â no sides with the tacos i.e. how much does rice or beans cost anyway
3. Â no extra salsa at the table for my tacos so they were a little dry
4. Â pricey overall for the amount of food you got
Still we enjoyed our food and did not leave hungry. Â However if I were hungry I don't think I would have chosen this place. Â It is more of a date and socializing kind of place that would be frequented by a younger crowd. Â I would say it is good for taste but not good for value.
First of all, the way they transformed the exterior in the alley is awesome. Â The interior is small, a little dark, and cozy. Â They need a few more things on the walls eventually. Â The music was fun.
They have a bunch of specialty sangrias and margaritas. I opted for the Blood Orange Jalapeno margarita. Â It was delicious, but could have used a bit more alcohol, it watered down quickly. Â Beer selection is lacking, crappy beers on tap. Maybe one decent in the bottle (I think it was a sierra nevada).
Food! Â Their food offerings and fresh and pretty, with a few twists. Â They mainly offer salads, a bunch of tacos, sandwiches, burgers...it's a small menu. Â However, they have specials every day that aren't on the menu, and you can kind of create your own plate. Â We tried the fried mushrooms as our appetizer, they were definitely the best I've ever had and a great bang for your buck. Â Easily feeds 4 people. Â Husband and I ordered tacos, a friend ordered a salad and added some fish. Â All of the food was good, but I'd have to say the fish tacos are overpriced for the amount you get (especially with no sides).
We will visit again, but not going to make a point of it.
Me: Â There's a new place downtown that I want to check out, it's called Muertos.
Smart & Well Read Friend: Â *glaring at me* Â Muertos? Â You DO know what that means, right?
Me: Â Yeah, I know. Â I look at it this way - whatever's on my plate is going to be muertos anyway. Â I would be scared shitless if it was vivos.
Smart & Well Read Friend: Â Point taken.
This restaurant is small but cozy. Â The interior has exposed brick, a sleek modern bar, and tiny tables. Â They have a huge patio area however, all the fans aren't going to make a difference during a Bakersfield summer. Â Avoid the patio until fall.
They offer a red and white sangria. Â Both were very refreshing on a blistering August evening. Â They were made fresh, not like they've been sitting in a pitcher for awhile. Â For an appetizer, I had garlic fries. Â Too much cheese and not enough garlic - I'll pass on this next time.
Their entrees revolve around a certain type of meat they're cooking that day. Â It could be tequila lime shrimp, Mediterranean pork, Hawaiian pork, and a ton of other mouth watering choices that I can't recall. Â They'll serve it up as an entree, salad, or tacos. Â The tequila lime shrimp was s'okay but...the pork Hawaiian style was hea-ven-ly. Â It was juicy, zingy, and mixed well with their fruity salsa toppings. Â I'm really hoping this pork makes it onto their menu permanently.
Service was spot on - all servers were friendly and welcoming and they knew the menu like the back of their hand.
This place is a great new hangout to grab a drink and a bite before hitting up all the bars downtown. Â I would like to see them develop a tapas like menu to accompany their drinks because their drinks are amazing. Â Maybe offer single tacos or a Hawaiian pork lettuce wrap. Â Overall, the owners did a great job with this place.
The two best things about this place are the sangria and the employees. We talked to 3 different servers while we were there, and all of them were very nice, and knew the food and drink menu like the back of their hand.
My girlfriend and I had the red wine and white wine sangria, both were amazing. I can't think of anything better to enjoy on a hot day. We also shared the garlic fries to start and they were great.
My girlfriend wasn't feeling well and we had to take our entrees to go. The owner offered to give her some chicken soup if her stomach was hurting, but it was her head. Very nice gesture on her part.
I need to remind myself that I don't like snapper when it's cooked. Sashimi I love it, not so much when it's cooked. To me, it's too tough and dry for fish tacos.
I will definitely return to this place and tell my friends about it. The location is pretty neat too.
My wife and I went to Muertos for the first time about 4 weeks ago. We were very impressed by their fresh new approach to Bakersfield dining. Since then we have been back a number of times. The atmosphere is super comfortable, the staff was very hospitable, and the food is excellent. I had a burger that was one of the best burgers I have had in Bakersfield. I am excited to see somebody doing something fresh and different in town.
We are looking forward to visiting again soon and I would definitely give them a try if I would persuade you. Being in the design line of work, I give them a thumbs up on their branding.
Great place for lunch or an early dinner.
I ordered the garlic fries, Muertos cheesesteak, white sangria, and blood orange, jalapeno but thanks to the 6 coworkers I was with that are pretty cool 14% of the time, I was also able to try the Halibut salsa, Jalapeno Burger, Fried Mushrooms, and Ortega Chicken  sandwich
The menu is a bit limited, but almost all of it is fantastic. You really cant go wrong - the only thing I need to still try is the strawberry mint margarita, a few of their desserts, and the halibut tacos. My only issue is the that the fries are just average, which I dont understand because the Garlic fries are so amazing.
Sarah has done an awesome job with the drinks menu
if it is your first time I vote you try the fried mushrooms, halbut salsa, carne asada ("cheesesteak") sandwich and one of their Soku cocktails
Hey, I Â just ate here,
And this is crazy,
But here's my review,
So read it maybe?
Well now that I got your attention and that guilty pleasure of a tune stuck in your head let me tell you about Muertos.
Besides the lovely vomit smell walking down Wall St (alley right across from the Alley Cat) my first impression walking in was pleasant. The place is cozy, has pretty brick walls and a large outside patio that is covered and has ceiling fans to keep you somewhat comfortable. We decided to make reservations since we've never been here before and there was five of us. We saw a table right up front with a "Reserved" sign on it which was ours. We were relieved we called ahead because the place was fairly busy. The service was also very welcoming and pleasant the entire time. However, the bartender did laugh at my friend when his high pitched sneeze echoed through the room like a little girls. This admittedly though, would be hard to not laugh at. We all did.
I had the Pineapple Serrano Margarita which was really good. Not really sweet and had a very good kick of heat from the Serrano. I enjoyed it very much. I also had the Sangria later on in the night and that was also good but maybe a bit too sweet for my taste. Â As for the food we ordered the Fried Mushrooms and Halibut Salsa as an appetizer. The mushrooms were amazing and very large. Definitely a redo. The Halibut Salsa, which was like a ceviche really, came served with some tasty tortilla chips. Not sure if they make them themselves but I liked them. The "salsa" itself was tasty and fresh but a little dry. It would have been nice if they served some lime wedges on the side to add a bit more moisture. We ended up using some Tapatio which helped with that.
I also had the Fernando burger which is a wonderfully charred, large and flavorful with grilled jalapenos, pepper jack cheese and chipotle mayo. It came with fries which were hot, crisp and perfectly seasoned. Only complaint with my entree was that the ketchup is served in the small Dip & Squeeze packets. It's always nice to have a real bottle you can serve yourself with.
Overall this is a great place. The menu is small but that has its advantages. I'll definitely be coming back for some good cocktails, mushrooms and burgers!
