Definitely a more upscale cocktail bar, which is nice to see in the area. Â I have to admit I only went because I had a Groupon, and probably won't go again without another one. Â
It has a great atmosphere and good bartenders, but the price is steep, and selections of wine and beer are limited. Â I ordered a cheese plate that was $15 which came with 10 really thin pieces of swiss and brie the size of a fifty cent piece accompanied by 5 crackers....not worth it. Â I also drank wine ($12 a glass) and a cocktail (same price) Â both tasty but not worth the price.
I have been to the other neighborhood bars in the area that are just as fun but more my price style.
***I have heard that their happy hour is worth while, maybe that might change my mind ***
Front bar tender did NOT even know how to make a "Skinny Girl Margarita"
I had to tell him HOW to make it & he had the audacity to tell ME, the customer, "to get a life!" The drink was HORRIBLE! The service was HORRIBLE.
While in the ladies room the bouncer came in & asked if there was vomit in there.
How disgusting!! Luckily there was none that we noticed. But, to have to worry about that is totally inappropriate. This place is a complete wack job. I DO NOT recommend anyone to go to this place as a FUN night out. I can totally see this place going under. I miss Monterey Live.
It feels like a speakeasy. Â In fact, it reminds me of an old bar called Speakeasy in Hollywood. Â Lovely decor -- very Restoration Hardware meets Potterybarn meets Spanish Revival. Â The drinks were good, but the homemade garlic-stuffed olives were to die for! Â Seriously, my eyes rolled back in my head everytime I ate one of those delicious nuggets of heaven. Â If I lived in this area, I would be there every night relaxing in those comfy chairs. Â Monterey seems to be lacking in nice lounges such as this. So I highly recommend all of the locals hit it up and support your bar scene!!!
Review Source:The old Viva is now My Attic and I recently stopped in with a few regulars to check out the scene. Â Half loungy feel and half vintage atmosphere as they remind us that they were established in 1937. Â Friends have hosted huge parties in this revamped venue so I look forward to attending one in the near future. Â This space would make sense for a themed party but I will need to visit a few more times to see what they are all about. Â I recently bought a Groupon for "Italian appetizers and drinks" so I look forward to giving them another whirl soon.
Review Source:Had a great time at My Attic with my husband. A Groupon got us in there and the ambiance is very cool: large wing-back chairs, a cozy bar, and formal dining room. We got there right when they opened at 7pm, so it took them a few minutes to get going. We had excellent, attentive service, and the food was surprisingly good (we had the cheese plate and rosemary focaccia). I also loved the overhead music selection (think The Rat Pack era). The drawbacks are it's pretty pricey for drinks ($10-$15) and there were no crackers or bread served with the cheese platter! Overall, my husband and I agreed this would be a fun stop to have a drink prior to a movie at the Osio or show at Golden State. We will return.
Review Source:This place is a total joke. I've actually never been inside because they wouldn't let me in because I was wearing Vans. They lost me as a customer forever. I mean its downtown Monterey not Las Vegas, plus there were like 5 people inside and I would have been a good paying customer. Not to sure what their logic was for that one.
Review Source:I've been to My Attic a few times now. I was excited to see what would take the place of Monterey Live (which used to occupy the place years ago). My Attic was a pleasant surprise.
It is very different from most places in that it is very conducive to hanging with friends. Read that as you can actually have a conversation and hear each other. The couches and chairs are perfect for just the right amount of intimacy for a couple or small group. Each little set-up is like a mini-living room. And, if you have a larger group, there are a couple good sized tables down the middle.
If you like to hang at a bar and talk to the bartender, there is a front are with a full bar and about 8-10 bar stools. Not much room there for folks to stand around, so it keeps it intimate as well.
The people that come here are upscale. Think men with jackets and women in dresses. Great place to dress up a little and go be classy.
The staff is great as well. They are quick to notice when you are looking for service and do not interrupt just to check on you. I find staff that is alert can tell when you want help and are there when you need it rather than when it is convenient to them. Another point that makes this place a bit classier.
Salena is my favorite bartender there. The rest are great too, but she went out of her way to figure what I wanted, even when they were getting rather busy. She was spot-on with her suggestions and able to make drinks faaast! Kudos to her! I hate waiting for service, so getting in and served is a big plus to me.
All in all, My Attic is a great place to meet up with friends or take a date for a relaxing atmosphere and good conversation.
Monterey's newest addition to its night-on-the-town scene? --Newest to me, anyway.
I'm a native Montereyan who's been to every bar in town, and for being a town with prestigious history and prominent buildings, it has more than its share of seedy dives and clubs.
This is not one of them.
My Attic is an odd, if not quaint, little place. Â Loungy, intimate, a little upscale. Â Velvety high-back love-chairs with ottomans surround a large, formal dining table smack dab in the middle of the room, which probably seats 15-20 people, easily.
Interesting.
And if you're a seasoned couple, you may find the incommodious love-chairs annoying -- it feels like you should be making-out because there's only a six-inch gap between your antiquated faces the entire time.
Perfect for first dates. Â Or, maybe not.
Wise tip: Do NOT take that ex you just ran into at the Williams-Sonoma, whom you haven't seen in two years, for that platonic catch-up session to a place like this. Â You WILL end up fucking each other. Â Perhaps that's your (not so) subtle plan anyway, in which case this IS THE PLACE.
They serve some appetizers, like Marinated Sicilian-style Olives with Rosemary Focaccia Bread; Cheeses and Cured Italian Meats; Heirloom Caprese Salads, etc. Â Pretty good. Â Not your run of the mill afterthoughts that most lounges would serve.
I was a little perplexed by the dubstep and club music playing pretty loudly while there wasn't actually a place to dance. Â In fact, I think they discourage it.
Interesting.
The table (er, ottoman as it were) service was amazing. They give you a silver metal tray to set on the ottoman to place your drinks on. Â The cocktails were amazing -- best Long Island in town. Â A little pricey but worth it, considering your other options in the area.
The dress code is shockingly surmisable. Â If you're called out, it's probably because you're a douchebag.
Maybe it was the $120 (for two of us) in cocktails that turned all of our reservations we had about this place into an evening of complete entertainment and a feeling of coziness.
UNTIL, the music stopped and the bouncer came in at 1:30a sharp and started yelling at us to "get the fuck out" (in a sophomorically jovial kinda way). Â It was really, really uncalled for and changed the atmosphere immediately -- which knocked a star off for this otherwise four-star worthy cocktail lounge.
My Attic attempts to create a speakeasy feel, but they fail and miserably at that. Â The layout in the main bar area is ridiculous. Â The inclusion of a gigantic table in the middle of the space disrupts the flow of traffic and kills any attempt at conversation between groups. Â The love seats spaced evenly against the walls are very uncomfortable and take up too much room. Â Rather than making room for groups of friends, these large chairs (and their ottomans) take up space that could accommodate 4-6 people. Â The bartenders and servers are all very nice, but the interior design makes the experience so uncomfortable for a group that the overpriced drinks are not worth it. Â All I could think about while there was how much money the bar was losing as a result of their poor interior design.
Review Source:My Attic  is an interesting bar/lounge with the unusual combination of a velvet-chairs- comfortable-lounge, with the music of a seedy dubstep dance bar (but oddly enough you're not supposed to dance (?)) and fucking AMAZING drinks and damn good table service, the likes of  which I have never experienced in a bar (I think our waitress' name is Rachel? she is awesome).  It's unusual, but I think i'm enjoying it . . .
(I actually really enjoyed my time at the Attic up until 2am when this rude waiter came around yelling "get the hell out, we're closing!" -- he did it in a sort-of-cheerful-voice, and i think he was trying to be funny, but no. No. No. No. Â Please don't yell at me to leave your establishment, especially while I'm being handed a bill for a bunch of expensive drinks. Â I would have given this place four stars, because I had a great time, but the yelling at me to get the hell out definitely knocked off a star. Â If the rude waiter had tried that shtick at the Mucky Duck down the street one of the patrons would have punched him.
I'm very happy with the addition of this chic cocktail den to downtown Monterey. The former tenant of Monterey Live, the Attic brings a much-anticipated cool cocktail lounge to the area. The low-lit rooms and the dark wood interior lends it a cozy saloon-like feel and harks back to the old John Steinbeck days. In fact, John Steinbeck has tossed back a few drinks at the original My Attic back in the 1930's.
The decor features tufted leather seating, high-backed chairs, soft pillows, vintage chandeliers, beautiful fresh floral bouquets, cozy wall sconces and an open-feel vaulted wood ceiling.
The cocktail list features a nice sampling of local wines, sexy cocktails and fine spirits. There is a small bites menu for a nice light drink accoutrement, including a cheese platter, fresh rosemary foccacia bread, fresh salads and marinated olives. Tableside absinthe is available for those seeking a flashy and adventurous potion.
It's nice to have another lounge/bar in the Monterey night life scene, especially one with such a rich historic past.
I'm new to the area and am always looking for new things to do on the weekends. I'm from Orange County so I've had a plethora of options when it came to nightlife.
This place is very nicely decorated and I'm a huge fan of the huge comfy chairs. I came on a Saturday night and it was a little dead in my opinion. Nevertheless, my friends and I enjoyed a few martinis and had a cheese plate. I had the Ketel one oranje cosmaretto martini and it was very tasty. Light and fruity. A little pricey for my teacher wallet, but enjoyable to splurge occasionally. The cheese plate was good, but my only complaint was the fact that they did not serve any crackers or fruit with the cheese. Very strange.
This wouldn't be a regular hang out for me because it was lacking a certain upbeat feel to it, but it would be a nice place to grab a drink and catch up with a friend. It would also be a good date location since it's nice and not too loud where you can't have a decent conversation. Come check it out for yourself!
I had no problems with staff and enjoyed my time here.
Stopped by My Attic after an event at Golden State Theater. I was excited to see that they finally had reopened the space after Monterey Live closed down a few years ago.
The new decor is nice, I like the big open space in the back with the bar. The vibe at this place was a little weird, I couldn't quite figure out what the issue was, but I just felt uncomfortable. So after one drink my friend and I headed out. Not sure I will be heading back next time I am in Monterey.
First I didn't see any drug related stuff happening so don't know where the other reviewers are getting that. Second, people are saying they are limiting their clientele to the "trendy" people like it's a bad thing: since when is it a crime to want attractive, well-dressed people in your establishment??
We got in with no issues at shortly after 10. The place was pretty packed and there were waits at both bars. The crowd was a bit old (50+) but got a bit better (as did the music) as the night wore on.
Waitresses were attentive and plentiful!! Should be no problem getting drinks here.
Bathrooms were relatively clean but ladies room ran out of tp -- luckily I always stuff my purse before I go out. It was restocked the next time I went in, but would be better for them to just have it available in the bathroom.
No dance area whatsoever and the back bar area is set up like a restaurant which I didn't care for. Also the lighting is terrible, it's super bright for a bar and I got the sense I was at a house party instead of a lounge.
Dress code is unfortunately not strictly enforced. There were plenty of well dressed people but a handful of rif raff (ha!! Love that word) in hoodies and sneakers. There was even a person (they seriously scared me, I'm not sure if it was a girl or a guy) sporting a backpack. :/
Overall, pretty good but would like to see them stick to their dress code and really make this a classy spot. With all the money in this town, it should not be this hard to find a nice place to go out.
I'am very excited about this place. This is what Monterey needs. The second i walked in i step into the past while looking at old pictures of Monterey. I'am always very intrigued by the history Monterey has to offer and greatly enjoyed the photos. There was a bit of a line, but i can understand why. This place is great there is always going to be a line expect it and come earlier to beat the line. I can already tell this place is going to be my bar of choice. Its more of a relaxing place than any dive bar in monterey. If your looking for trash and booty dancing take it down the street to the Mucky Duck. This place has class and the renovations are amazing. There are two bars within My Attic to grab your drink so there was no waiting i got my drinks right away with no questions asked. The bartenders no what they are doing and will take good care of you.
Review Source:Can I give zero stars?
The staff was rude and unreasonable. The doorman was the worst.
There was definitely some funny business going on in the bathrooms here. Not surprised about the drug comments.
The decor was nice, but the place is small and cramped just like every other dive in this town.
