I'm new to Wynantskill and thrilled to find an awesome place so close to home. Â This was my second visit in 2 months. Friendly and professional service from the minute I walked in the door. It's lively but not noisy. The menu has a great selection of everything without being overwhelming (not a fan of over large menu). Tonight I had the Chicken and Shrimp Nichi - amazing! Creamy tomato sauce with tons of chicken, mushrooms, proscuitto, mozz cheese and 3 giant shrimp... pasta al dente, shrimp succulent and chicken tender. (last time i had the shrimp and scallop fra diavlo - also excellent). Thanks to Mark and Marissa for a really nice visit. I'll definitely be recommending Nichi's.
Review Source:Went here for my sister-in laws birthday. We had reservations for 6:30 but we really didn't need them as the restaurant wasn't busy at all. Getting back to the restaurant, it is really nice inside everything is new and clean. I started off with a glass of Italian wine it was a Chianti, very nice wine nice-after tones not too dry and not too fruity at all. I put in a appetizer of their eggplant rontelli, it came out and it looked really good. I am extremely picky when it comes to eggplant so I rarely order it when I go out, the eggplant here was delicious ,great filling with melted mozz cheese on top...it was really yummy, would definitely order it again. For my entree I ordered parmesan crusted chicken and it came with baked potato with green beans. The chicken itself was quite rich but it was really tasty, it is a dish that leaves your tummy filling full and satisfied. My wife ordered shrimp alfredo with broccoli in it. Her dish was extremely rich and heavy but really good and fulling, there was no way you could finish this dish at one sitting. You are going to have leftovers because the potions here are HUGE. I wanted to try dessert but I was full, but seeing though it was my sister- in laws birthday the waiter came out with a piece of chocolate cake which I sample and it was really moist it hit the spot. Over all a very pleasant experience at Nichi's, I would definitely go back if I am in the area.
Review Source:It's always exciting to see where the first place your hosts are going to take you when visiting. Hello Nichi's, nice to meet you. I hear you're fairly new in town after your predessors went belly up after running their restaurants into the ground. But you seem to have staying power, and I can see why. I was actually confused there were so many choices, for all courses. We started with a really good bread. Brushetta had a lot of stuff on it and was pretty tasty. You are served a family style salad, I believe the sweetness came from a balsamic vinegrette, I prefer red wine for an Italian salad dressing. I orded ziti, for no other reason but I am paranoid about trying meat in new surroundings, which in this case was a poor judgement call. I got it with meatballs, and I thought it was cool how they were hidden in the casserole, rather than placed on top. Good was that it was a huge portion, loaded with cheese. Not good that the sauce didn't balance it, either with the amount or spiciness. I thought the meatballs were really good, and not spicy, how some Italians make them. My companion let me sample his parmesean crusted chicken. He chose well, so did his daughter, who got chicken with capers. However I didn't sample this because this was our first meeting, and I didn't want her to think I was a total animal. Although everyone was getting really uncomfortable, the tiramisu looked too good to pass up. Nothing like an intelligent diner. That had to be close to the best I ever had, and what made it so was the amount of rum gave it just the right kick. Anymore it would have been ruined, any less it would be like most others. They are regulars here and I can see why.
Review Source:Ok, so gave Nichi's a second try this week and again did not live up to well...anything. Did take out again for time saving reasons....chicken parm was so overcooked the chicken was rubbery and ended up throwing out most of it and in our house chicken parm never goes to waste whether it's ordered out or homemade. Ordered mozzarella sticks with the meals and they completely forgot to put them in the order, but the only shining light was at least we didn't get charged for them. So second time was definitely not the charm and I don't think there will be a 3rd.
Review Source:Meh. Would not go back. 1 1/2 stars.
Points for effort in decor and service, but the food is ordinary to say the least. I went there for dinner since I live nearby. The menu is standard Italian, with nothing inventive or unusual to boast of. Also, Jessica L. is correct - it's very confusing trying to figure out which meals come with salad and bread and which don't. I also had ingredients missing from my manicotti.
We had fried mozzarella as an appetizer, my husband had eggplant parm and I had the aforementioned manicotti. Salad came out family-style, and was marginally better than the Olive Garden (mostly iceberg, a bit of tomato, and standard Italian dressing). My manicotti was overstuffed with cheese with hardly any spinach, and missing roasted red peppers which I was really looking forward to. The eggplant parm was average. I was most disappointed by their marinara sauce, which I measure a lot of Italian restaurants by. Dull and flavourless, this could have easily come out of a can.
It's disappointing, because the interior was so lovely and the service was professional and excellent. However, with the prices they charge for such mediocre food I can't see myself going back. I recommend Villa Valenti's restaurant instead (located within 5 minutes drive of Wynantskill's main street).
Dinner for four with one shared appetizer, four entrees, and a glass of wine each came to nearly $100.
This past weekend, my family ordered take-out from here to bring home and eat there. Now, was it a good dining experience, not really, but am I willing to overlook it...most likely, and I'll explain why.
First, a big peeve of mine that I noticed, was the menu is very confusing. So on the menu it says all entrees come with salad and bread. Now there were 7 of us altogether. 4 of us got chicken parm, 1 got chicken sorrento, 1 got chicken francaise, and the last got penne alla vodka. Now all the chicken dishes were listed under the same chicken title and the penne dish under the pasta subtitle. Now 5 out of the 7 came with salad, but the 2 that didn't come with it were the chicken sorrento and chicken francaise. Now I wouldn't have been surprised if the penne dish didn't because that was just a pasta dish, but I couldn't understand why two chicken entrees did not. My sister got the francaise, and thought maybe it was because hers came with a veggie and potato side. That's all fine and good, but my meal didn't come with any side, or salad. Now I remember there being something about maybe a choice between salad, potato or pasta, but as far as my memory serves, my dish was described as being on a bed of angel hair, not angel hair is a side choice. Anyways, when we called in our order I asked my sister to ask them why those two dishes came without salads, and she couldn't provide us with a straightforward answer. I still do not understand why those two didn't come with salads, and would love to know why.
Now on to the actual experience. We were told to arrive between 8 and 8:30 for our food, so we went at 8:15 and was told it would be 10 more minutes, which was fine, it was still on time. Well it was 10 minutes late, not too big a deal. But the hostess was also on the phone carrying on personal conversations about a party when we arrived and took several minutes to greet us. I am not one to complain if people are making personal calls, so long as you are still acknowledging customers first. Next, the brother-in-law of the owner came out and apologized for the delay, and explained that it had been a rough night and he said that he hopes that night doesn't negatively hurt his business. - Now I have to wonder, how much went wrong that night??? However, I am also very appreciative when people come forth with information like that. I like knowing that that was not the standard of service they normally put out, otherwise, I probably would have given this 1 star.
We brought our food home, and realized we were missing one entree and 3 salads, and we also weren't given any bread. We called back, let them know what we were missing, and they offered to deliver it to us, even before they knew how near or far we were from the restaurant. I greatly appreciated this. Luckily, the entree we were waiting for was for someone to take home to their husband, so at least we could all start eating.
Now, we all had specific pasta requests, mine was for linguine, the penne obviously with penne, and the rest with angel hair. Every entree, including the penne alla vodka, came out with linguine. My sister said the girl who took the call-in read her back the order and had all the correct pasta choices, so I don't know where this mix-up happened, but somewhere in there, it happened.
Now, we don't know why they were having such a tough night, maybe it was just a busy tough night and people were burnt out, or maybe they were short staffer - I am hoping the latter, cause I can understand how mistakes happen when short-staffed as I work in a hectic job as well.
My food was quite good, but I cannot speak for all the dishes. I tried the penne alla vodka that my one sister ordered, and to me it tasted as if the vodka never cooked out. It tasted like someone had poured a shot in right before finishing it, and like I could get drunk on it. Now I wouldn't call this just a matter of taste, this to me was just not cooked properly. Hopefully this was just because it was a rough night, otherwise, that was not a good vodka dish.
My bottom-line here - had they not apologized and told us they were having a very rough night, I probably wouldn't be eating here again, but I am willing to give them another try to wow me, cause it would be nice to have a nice place to eat so close by.
We knew the chef from when he worked at another establishment and knew we'd follow him wherever he went. Â We're SO glad NIchi's is finally open. Â Just got back from dinner and we were both VERY happy with everything!
We were greeted with a smile and promptly seated. Â Our waitress, Nicole, was great. Â I had the Chicken & Shrimp Nichi ($18.99) and my husband had the NY Strip Pizzaiolo ($20.99). Â Everything here is homemade from scratch....right down to the bread and the salad dressings and it shows. Â Our food was absolutely delicious!!! Â The menu offers a wide range of food, as well as prices. Â They have paninis, chicken pot pie right up to ribeye steaks or penne alla vodka with shrimp (which is what I'm having next time we go). Â Dinner for the two of us, including one draft beer, one diet pepsi and two glasses of nice red wine was $69.01!
We were so stuffed there was no way we could even consider dessert - but we had to hear what they had, just in case! Â :)
It's so nice to see a non chain restaurant that does food so well. Â Nichi's is a much welcomed addition to Wynantskill! Â We will definitely be back!
Nichi's Restaurant opened up in the former Gregory's Restaurant, Main Street Grill, and Dino's Restaurant. The name of the restaurant sounds Japanese, but they do not serve Japanese food, but Italian American cuisine, adding to the several choices of Italian food in North Greenbush including LaBella's across the street, Paolo Lombardi's and Villa Valenti on Route 150 and Moscatiello's on Route 4.
Nichi's is named after the "Panichi" family, who are the owners. The son (Fuzzy) was in the same class as my sister and one of the daughters is a neighbor. The restaurant was remodeled and looks very nice compared to its predecessors. There's a sunroom in front, the dining room has hardwood floors and brick columns from before (dim lighting & candlelight), and the lounge is brighter and nicer. We've dined at Gregory's a couple times and Dino's many times in the past, where the food was pretty decent. Dino's was usually not packed and we were always greeted by an older gentleman sitting in the lounge. One of the first companies I worked for had business meetings here. The cake display case at Dino's was very memorable.
My folks and I decided to have dinner at Nichi's Restaurant just to try it out since it's less than a mile from home and there was good user feedback on Steve Barnes' blog in the TU. Â We arrived here on a steady Saturday evening and it felt like going to a reunion. We were greeted by Tina, who knew my Mom. We were bumping into several people we haven't seen in a long while including a former town councilman and his wife. It must have been Wynantskill teachers night because my former kindergarten teacher, third grade teacher, and a substitute teacher (I went to school with her kids) were all having dinner here. I haven't seen these people in almost 20 years. They came over to us and we had a good "catching up" chat while waiting for our courses during dinner. Too bad my sister was not here with us and no "Fuzzy Wuzzy" was a bear jokes to crack.
Okay, onto the review! After we were seated in the center dining room, we were given menus to look over. The menu offerings include pasta dishes, chicken, veal, steaks, seafood, ribs, comfort dishes, paninis, salads, and appetizers. A wine list was at the table and Pepsi fountain drinks are served here. The prices are moderate, but reasonable for what you get. See the menu offerings at http://www.nichis.com  The waiter came over to pour some house ice water and announced the 3 specials including a Veal Marsala dish for $19.99.
APPETIZERS: The Fried Calamari ($9.99) was fried light and mostly soft rings served with a mild roasted red pepperochini dipping sauce. The Eggplant Rollatini ($8.99) was breaded eggplant rolled around ricotta cheese, mozzarella cheese, garlic. & seasonings in a thick homemade tomato sauce. Both appetizers were very good starts. A basket of warm crusty bread & butter was also very good.
DINNERS: Spaghetti & Sausage ($11.99) was served in a big bowl with soft thin spaghetti, 2 large sausages, and covered with lots of thick homemade tomato sauce. The Chicken Marsala ($15.99)was very tender boneless chicken breasts with portabella mushrooms and cooked in a marsala wine sauce and served with angel hair pasta. The Scrod Vera Cruz ($14.99) was broilled and very firm texture and served with onions, peppers, & mushrooms and a side of pasta (firm fettuccine with tomato sauce). Sprinkled parmesan cheese was offered on the food and more bread was brought out. The portions of food were generous and we needed boxes afterwards. All of the entrees we had were very enjoyable.
We were so full, we passed on dessert (offerings change often) which included cheesecake, cannoli cake, and peanut butter mousse. The staff was very friendly and the service we had was good and timely.Dinner for 3 with the food and 3 Diet Pepsis came out to $73.35 with tax, before tip.
Wynantskill was definitely in need of a nice, but casual sitdown restaurant that's not a chain and offers solid good food, good portions, and good service at reasonable prices.
