I've been to Nick's Patio too many times to count over the years. Back in the day, it was the place to go for a late night breakfast after a night out (I'm sure it still is, I'm just too old to partake in those shennigans nowadays!).
It's your typical Greek diner, open 24 hours a day, huge menu, great breakfasts, good sandwiches, homemade soups and desserts that you are always too full to try.
The place is usually crowded, but I've rarely had to wait. As soon as you are seated, your waters appear and the waitress is usually not far behind. And speaking of waitresses, most of them are career waitresses and have been at Nick's forever. They are friendly, quick and always remember the regulars (seems to be a lot of them every time we are there).
The coffee is good and your cup is never empty...I swear I end up drinking at least a pot every time I am there.
They serve breakfast 24 hours a day and have just about anything you could want. One of my go to favs is the house omelet with ham, green peppers, onions and a ton of feta cheese. The omelets are huge and include home fries and toast. Most items range from $6-8.
Lunch is also good and they feature a variety of homemade soups, which vary each day. Salads are large and fresh (although a little boring with just iceberg lettuce).
Service is fast even when the place is packed so it's easy to get in and out in less than an hour. Our bill for breakfast and lunch for two is typically around $17, which is very reasonable for the amount of food.
Good to know that this restaurant likes people who come in and harass other customers. Also good to know that they don't care if people yell slurs/offensive language and talk about how they want to be violent towards women.
If you're an asshole, this is the restaurant to go to. Otherwise, management is just going to tell you to sit down and shut up if you feel uncomfortable about being called a whore and about someone threatening to rape you.
Also that gyro looks fucking pathetic.
This is a diner and they serve diner food. All food is comfort that way they are open 24hours a day. No matter the time day or night the food is always good. But keep in mind it is comfort diner food, nothing healthy on the menu. You have to try the pancakes, gyros, chicken fried steak and the omelets. You won't be disappointed.
When in south bend you have to plan a visit to nicks patio!
I've been coming to this restaurant for as long as I can remember. Â It is the best 24 hr joint in the area. Â Great breakfast items (served all day), and friendly service. Â The dining room is small but quaint. Â The soups are usually really good, the coffee strong, and the fries thick and crispy. Â Yum.
Review Source:Typical Greek place that has pretty much everything on their menu. Gyros, breakfast, pasta, sandwiches, steaks, wraps, and many many many other types of food. The food is ok and it's open late so you grab some grub after a night out. You can also see some very interesting folks eating late night. Last time I was in i saw what I believed was a pimp. Tried to snap a picture to put on yelp, but he got pissed. Maybe next time.
Review Source:AWESOME.
only 24 hour diner i know if in south bend. Â as a result, this place gets my approval.
that, and the gyro is really great. Â so is the side greek salad. Â oh, and let's not forget the crazy huge basket of cracker-esque items you get for just sitting down. Â you could make a meal outta that thing.
nick's is a family joint and the service is friendly and experienced. Â been at the linebacker all night? Â stop by nick's to ensure a pleasant "day after."
This food at this place is pure crap. Â Absolutely horrible, and overpriced to boot. Â You want good breakfast food? Â Check out the Kitchenette on Ewing and Michigan. Â
The only reason it gets any stars, and that I go here for that matter, is for being open all hours and good service.
The only 24 hrs place in town for decent food with mostly typical American dishes - just like a family restaurant that opens all day. The waitresses are nice but not a place for teens or for people who wants sparkling atmosphere, but it's quite cozy. Food is not expensive and it's nice to eat decent food if you get out of work at 3am and not have to stop by McDonald or Taco Bell
Review Source:Yes, it is open 24h but that is, in my opinion, one of the only positives of this place.
I am giving the two stars to them because (1) as I mentioned, it is open 24h and around here this is extremely rare unless we are talking about walmart, and (2) the waitresses are always the best, regardless of the time of the day, and (3) I am very nice. The food however, did not leave a good impression on me at all.
Though I understand this may be a treat to some people's taste, I really don't like food that is extra greasy. I also thought the price could be slightly less  for most of the dishes, but I guess that's the extra that you have to pay in case you feel like eating out at 3am.
Best food and best value in South Bend, hands down.
The pecan waffles are phenomenal: light, crispy, golden brown. Â Never chewy or overdone. Â The Reuben is one of the best to be found anywhere, and certainly for the best price. Â The soups are always comforting and taste homemade. Â And Nick's serves up some of the best diner coffee anywhere.
Service is always fast, friendly, and solicitous (even after midnight). Â Five emphatic stars!
24-hour diner with good food. Â Their prices have gone up a bit since I started eating there seven years ago, but it's still a great value, and your best option for late night eats. Â Excellent cream of rice and chicken soup on Sundays. Â The classic egg sandwich is a great deal. Â The steaks / grill stuff are their strong point. Â Many of the lunch specials are large - you can take the leftovers home and eat for dinner.
Review Source:This is South Bend's golden treasure. Â The food is so good you'll order an extra meal to take home (done it). Â The service is so friendly you'll develop a crush (done it. or maybe that was because I associated her with the food).
I recommend ordering the House Croissant. Â I come from a day and age where I could cavalierly order it as "Sex on a platter, please," but your mileage may vary. Â That's really the only thing you ever need to order from here, it's that good. Â Get it with ham AND bacon. Â Make sure you ask for hot sauce.
Oh, and COFFEE. Â The Kona coffee they serve here is SOOOOOOOO smooth and full-bodied. Â I usually avoid coffee in the US because it's often bitter and just a little bit keeps me up a long while. Â But at Nick's, I couldn't resist.
For appetizers, I liked to go with the mushrooms. Â Sometimes they come out too greasy, but they're still multiple times better than you'd get at IHOP or Denny's.
They usually run out of soup right before 0200, so get there by 0100 if you want to be sure to grab a cup of soup.
This place will have a line out the door right after the local bars close. Â I was such a frequent (and well-tipping) patron that even when the line was out the door, the kind folks would seat me right away. Â During quiet hours, I had "my" table that they would usually keep open for me in case I dropped in.
I also really highly recommend this place as a 24 hour or late night study spot. Â It's close to campus, but still off campus and away from the pressure of everyone else studying, they have the aforementioned magically delicious Kona coffee, and as long as you order food and are on good terms with the waitstaff, they will let you stay a long while. Â I've never been kicked out, and I've stayed over 6 hours. Â Please do note, however, that the restaurant was slow, and I did place several food orders, not just (free) coffee refills.
I really hope you enjoy Nick's as much as I did.
Open 24-hours and _everything_ is on the menu. I've had several different things oof of their extensive menu and everything has been in the "pretty good" category. Since they are always open, never crowded (at least not that I've seen), and good enough food I often use it as a (homework) grading spot. Definitely "A-OK".
Review Source:Open all night so this is a great late night/ early morning spot to get some good food at a good price. Service is usually very good and there are plenty of breakfast items that are quite tasty. I have had the fried chicken the last couple times and it really hit the spot. Not really a lunch or dinner spot unless you're feeling breakfast food but great morning or late night spot.
Review Source:Probably my favorite 24/7 diner type place in the world. The food here is like an IHOP or a Denny's but cheaper and of better quality. The menu is huge so you'll be able to find something that you'll want to eat. This place is packed late night after all the bars close. The soups here are amazing. You can eat like a king and end up paying $11 and that's including a $3 tip. I'm not saying this is the finest cuisine around, I'm saying for this type of restaurant, this is the best you'll find. I personally love eating the grilled cheese with bacon on it or some pancakes and then getting any number of delicious side. The cracker basket that comes with soup is also great and tides the whole table over as the rest of the meal comes.
Review Source:An excellent place to grab breakfast and lunch food. Â It's typical diner grub, nothing gourmet but it serves its purpose.
The pancakes are excellent, sausage great, bacon isn't my favorite but it's good.
Can get busy on weekend mornings but they move people in and out.
The hosts/hostesses and waitstaff are all typically endearing South Bend townies. Â I give them a TON of credit for putting up with extraordinarly drunk college students in the early hours of the morning.
Last but not least, they have AWESOME soda water (or seltzer, club soda, whatever you want to call it), and they're always quick with a refill!
As far as diner food is concerned Nick's is the best! I've tried places in Indy and Chicago and still have yet to find a place as good as Nick's. They are open 24/7 and serve breakfast all day. The menu is massive and the food is good a cheap. My favorite meal is the Greek chicken. It comes with kalamata olives, feta, and four pieces of chicken on a bed of rice. Oh and it's served with soup or salad and dessert (I go for the rice pudding). All that for under $10...just can't beat it. So if you are looking for good diner food any time of day, go to Nick's.
Review Source:The food is craptastic. It took my friend and I forever to order because pickins were slim.... crap or crap. Imagine IHOP food but worse. It is open late night though so that's why we picked Nick's. Usually infested with students and a cop hangout. You will regularly see cop cars parked here everynight, I promise. I say head over to IHOP in Mishawaka for better food.
Review Source:Nick's Patio made living in South Bend bearable.
Sure, it was annoying that Fox News was always blaring from the huge-screen TV in the front, but the nonsmoking section was nowhere near it. Â And sure, it was annoying knowing that a good percentage of your bill was probably being sent off to George W. Bush's reelection fund. Â But the place is open twenty-four hours, and the food, while not amazing, is pretty darn good.
