Noah Grant's is an intimate steakhouse and oyster/ sushi bar in an old home or storefront in Zionsville. It has a certain amount of charm, but the sushi bar part doesn't seem to "fit" with the oyster and steak offering.
We were seated immediately, which was nice, but our table for 5 was right next to the only bathroom, and across from the bar. It was certainly a popular area to walk by, and my chair was being bumped by servers and patrons alike all night. I couldn't really scootch in, either, because it was a high-top table and I couldn't touch the ground.
But, enough with the bad and on with the good. Plungerhead was a fantastic, fruity/smoky Zinfandel. Edamame was only lightly salted (or rather, unevenly salted) so a little disappointing, but enough to tide us over while we decided on the drunken naked clams, which were rich and buttery. Our dozen oysters (Blue Point, Cavendish, and Conaway) were slurped up quickly, each different type being proclaimed the favorite by various family members - always a great sign.
Main courses were perfect. The birthday girl (my mother) has the stomach capacity of a small child, so she ordered only the lobster bisque and said it was rich, creamy , and filling. My bourbon peppercorn filet was tender but maybe a touch more than medium rare (but perfectly paired with the sauce...not a drop went uneaten). I had food envy with the seafood risotto, and the sushi looked delicious too (but again, just a bit out of place). I wouldn't recommend the lobster mac and cheese, just because there were maybe two large pieces of lobster and the rest was pasta - which is ok, but not if you're taking the menu's advice and sharing between 5.
Desserts almost stole the show. The birthday treat was a butter cake that was phenomenal. Really. I want that again, right now. I also enjoyed my berry crisp a la mode...as evidenced by the fact that I ate the entire thing by myself (definitely not my mother's daughter).
Our server was friendly, patient, ready with recommendations, and quick to clear up a snafu with the bill. I'd highly recommend Noah Grant's if you are looking for a fancy night out, or just a nice intimate dinner.
My husband and I had reservations at Noah Grant's to celebrate my birthday. Â Our whole experience made me think of the old Seinfeld episode. Â It's not about taking the reservation, it's about keeping the reservation. Â We arrived and were told that our table was not yet ready. Â We were seated in the bar and then told the hostess would come and get us when our table was ready. Â After two drinks (and mine was terrible) and thirty minutes, my husband went to follow up with the teenage hostess. Â She said she thought we had made a reservation to sit in the bar. Â She was clearly making excuses and our frustration level grew as we were seated at a table that had been open since we walked in the restaurant. Â It was at that point we decided to leave.
My husband went to the bar to pay for our drinks and asked for a manager. Â The bartender was apologetic, but said that they didn't have a manager. Â She comped our drinks and offered us a $50 gift card, which was appreciated.
At that point, we walked down the street to Friendly Tavern and had great service and food. Â I guess it goes to show that you shouldn't necessarily expect great service just because a restaurant is expensive. Â Thanks Noah Grant's for spoiling my birthday dinner.
Shortly after my review, the owner sent me a message to apologize for our experience with the oysters and offered a gift card. Â A couple of days later we received a gift card in the mail. Â She is clearly focused on providing her customers a good experience and is sensitive to her social media image. Â We'll give Noah Grant's another try.
Review Source:I took my girlfriend here for Valentines day and was impressed by the whole experience. Â The oysters were very fresh, but weren't cheap. Â Which really is the price you pay for eating seafood in Indiana. Â Presentation of everything was nice and the setting was upscale and intimate. Â There are specials throughout the week and certain dishes are made nightly.
Review Source:Went on a recent weeknight and had another very good experience. I love this place, especially the bar. The fish and seafood are my favorites but they offer a wide variety of options at several price levels. Oysters are always available in several varieties they have never missed the mark. We have always had smooth and attentive service. Sushi and sashimi are fresh and well prepared. Soups are excellent and pair well with an appetizer like the Tuna Stack if you want a light meal. If you are hungrier the fish entrees have never disappointed, and you can get many other things, from steak to meatloaf. Good wine specials from time to time also. Just don't go too often. This is a small place and I want to be able to get a table!
Review Source:It was easy to find and we sat by the oyster bar. Came here Sunday late afternoon so it was half off for their blue point oysters and half off all bottles of wine. Now that's a deal! Their sushi on fire was delish. The lobster Mac and cheese was thick, creamy and worth ordering. The wait staff was very nice.
Review Source:We had received a great recommendation for the place and decide to try it for our anniversary. Since we arrived early we asked to be seated at the bar. Unfortunately we were forgotten there. I asked my husband to check after we'd waited at the bar for 40 minutes. We were sat right away in a table that had been empty the entire time we were at that bar. Once seated, we waited another 15 minutes to be visited by our wait staff. I was frankly at the point of walking out. While the food was good, it was just to little to late for me to consider the experience to be acceptable. I'm sorry we went and would not recommend the restaurant to anyone else.
Review Source:Our table was prepared when reserved with the added touch of a welcome placard on the table. Â Everyone was extremely helpful and friendly. Â We started with the Drunken Little Neck Clams. Â The broth on these was spectacular. Â The only complaint was that there seemed to be very few clams. Â This may be due to our being accustomed to New England "Steamers" where the quantities are much greater. Â We each had the Honduran Isle Balckened Talipia and shared a side dish of Lobster Mac n Cheese. Â Both were phenomenal. Â Overall, great food and service. Â Highly recommend this place.
Review Source:The steak was of great quality and taste but kind of small - though we knew that from the menu. Â The sushi was not really authentic because the rice was more of a mochi consistency than a sushi rice consistency and it was too big for the piece of fish. Â
Service was excellent though, very efficient and friendly.
I love this little restaurant. First off pulling up to the front of Noah Grants I felt I had just walked into a little street in Cape Cod.
I appreciated that they had our name written on a little reserved sign at our table. We began with oyster shooters (a first for me) which were pretty darn good. Tasted a bit like a spicy bloody Mary with a little oyster surprise.
We got a dozen oysters and just tried all the different kinds. That paired with a bottle of white, it was awesome.
For my main course i got the tilapia entree which was reminiscent of a Thai curry dish. But it was fantastic! The hubby got a steak (which I think is a mistake in a seafood restaurant) and my BFF got a seafood pasta dish.
The wait staff was also very helpful and fun.
I just loved the ambience of the place and the food was very nice too! This place was a definite find.
My wife got a gift card to Noah Grant's over Christmas, so we recently made reservations through OpenTable for a Saturday meal while my mother-in-law was in town. Â We were immediately seated as soon as we got there (about 5 minutes before our actual reservation). Â We ordered some spinach dip, which was quite good, and I ordered one of the Fire Breathing Dragon Roll. Â The sushi was just fine--nothing to write home about though, as I think it was a little too "American" for me, smoked salmon and all. Â Certainly nothing to fault them on, though.
For the main course, I ordered the blackened isle Honduran tilapia dish, while my wife got the regular Honduran tilapia prepared Noah's style. Â My dish was fine, with the fish cooked perfectly. Â My wife commented that hers was fine once she pushed back some of the excess garlic on the fish. Â We also got their macaroni & cheese side dish, which was absolutely stupendous. Â Easily one of the best mac & cheese dishes I've ever had--creamy, cheesy, pasta al dente, a little crunch from some toasted bread crumbs, oh my.
We also ordered up two desserts, since we had the gift card and they had a check-in offer through Yelp for a free dessert. We tried their butter cake soufflé, which was as awesome as the mac & cheese, along with the layered carrot cake. I found the cake to be a little dry, but this was also after we had taken it home from being too stuffed on everything else.
All in all, a great little quasi-romantic, locally-owned restaurant that absolutely deserves your patronage. Â Best of all, we still have some cash left on the gift card (which originally had $100 on it), so we'll be back.
As Hula B. mentioned/hinted, they do perhaps have some issues with website info vs. "the real deal" at the restaurant. Â They advertise on the website 1/2 price apps from 4-6, and we were definitely there during that time, but were charged full price for everything - but didn't remember until long after we were home.
Despite that! Â We had a good time.
We usually sit at the bar at place that have one, and they do, so we did! Â The bartender was very beer-knowledgeable and noticed my Sun King shirt right away - too bad I was caught off guard and didn't gracefully handle the fact that I wore it completely mindlessly and I'm not a "huge" SK fan! Â ANYWAY!
We asked for a wine recommendation and got a good one, ordered a bottle of it, and then proceeded to order some oysters or various types - all of which were quite tasty. Â It's always nice to find a place that has more than just one variety - and they had perhaps 4-5 different types to sample.
We also ordered a larger appetizer platter that came with a dairy-containing dish and since Lizz avoids dairy much of the time, we asked if we could substitute something without dairy and they gladly accommodated the request, offering sashimi instead which we gladly accepted!
All in all, our trip to Noah Grant's was a good experience and we'll probably be back. Â Zionville's a semi-frequent visit for us anyway.
We read all the reviews and being oyster lovers we stopped in. Â Initially we were lured in with the happy hour oyster special, but we didn't get there in time. Â We ordered up a variety of oysters, not really knowing the prices. Â $4 an oyster is ridiculous! Â I went for a salad and we split an oder of mussels and tried the lamb meat balls; my dining companion order the rib-eye special for $15.95. Â Everything was good, not great. Â When the bill came at $250, we were pretty shocked, but ordering oysters without knowing the prices was our fault. Â
But for $250 for dinner for two, no bottle of wine . Â . Â . I expect to be blown away and was pretty underwhelmed.
We have been wanting to try this place based on several good reviews from friends and it did not disappoint us. Â The server was super sweet and very attentive without being overly so. Â We started off with the shrimp cocktail which was fantastic. Â The shrimp were huge, perfectly cooked, and scrumptious. Â The wedge salad was a bit different as there was roasted red pepper in the blue cheese dressing-which was still good but not "traditional". Â My grandfather had the bone in rib eye steak that was delicious and again, cooked to perfection. Â My husband ha the crab cakes that were awesome. Very tender, sweet and filled with crab. Â I had the seafood risotto which was probably one of the best risottos I have ever eaten. Â The risotto had as much crab as rice in it making every bite wonderful. It was topped with three huge, succulent-ly, sweet scallops that were cooked to perfection. Â Very happy girl was I. Â We would absolutely return and highly recommend!!
Review Source:we went thinking we would have some happy hour appetizers and then dinner.
their web-site advertises happy hour specials in the bar, but when we got to the bar they acted like they didn't know what we were talking about and finally reluctantly pulled out the happy hour menu.
we ordered a couple of things from the happy hour menu 3 rounds of drinks, a couple oysters, and one appetizer from regular menu. Â
we were going to go to a table for dinner until i found out the table they had for us was about 3 feet from where we were already sitting at the bar. Â i turned them down and we went elsewhere.
i expect dinning rooms to be television free.
i also expect a dinning room table to be full sized, and the chairs to look and feel substantial. Â unfortunately, the furniture here is undersized and looks and feels cheap, instead of sumptuous.
that said, the drinks were good and the food we did have was good. service was OK once we managed to get them to show us the happy hour menu.
boyfriends dad brings me
oyster challenge: first time try
delicious, i win
I actually came here on a date with the bf and his parents. Â Yes, that's right, my FIRST meeting of the parents--to Noah Grant's we goooo! Â
So, I know I say this a lot--but my life was forever changed by Noah Grant's. Â How you ask? Â No no, there was no surprise 3 month anniversary proposal or dumb promise ring or outrageous gift or break up for that matter. Â It was one little mollusk: the oyster. Â No, again, the oyster did not send me into a super passionate love daze leading to some procreative notions with my S.O. Â Nope, the oyster was just pure deliciousness all in itself... hundreds of miles away from an ocean. Â
I'm pretty sure it was a test by bf's dad, "Oh you've never had them? You HAVE to try one!" Â Aren't I in Indiana? What are you playing at, Sir? How can I say no NOW?! Â Challenge: Accepted. Â
The rest is history. Â I can't get enough of them. Â I lived in Boston for 2.5 years without oysters in my life, and I overdosed the last 6 months I lived there--and it was all because of Noah Grant. Â Thank you, Noah.
Other than that craziness. I had the seared Ahi as my main dish... Raw never ceases to please me, and I've heard the bipimbop is good. Â I should def go check that out. Â
This place is expensive, busy, and kinda pretentious (hey, what do you expect from land-locked fresh seafood?). But if I become desperate for an oyster or half decent Korean, you might see me there... SOON
Nestled in the quaint area of Zionsville, Noah Grants is a great addition to the Northwestside culinary selection. The sushi wasn't the best...the rolls are tiny compared to Japanese sushi restaurants, however the rest of their seafood selections were pretty good. Their sides are very savory and heavy and the desserts are simply divine.
Review Source:Full disclosure: I met the bartender, Matt, through some mutual friends and so we've socialized together as a group before. Matt suggested I come in and try the place, and I had been meaning to since moving to Zionsville. I knew it was a "higher end" place.
I arrived early, on purpose. As in, "right as they opened at 4pm" early. I sat at the bar, and noticed that the wait staff was still setting up the place. Now, I've worked in plenty of restaurants and bars, so I know that it is common to still be "opening" even after you are "open." However, I think for a higher end place, they should be ready to go when they open. Anything less makes it hard to argue that the service is above and beyond what you can get at a chain restaurant.
While sitting at the bar, I drank a Sapphire and Tonic, and watched as a wine rep pitched some new offerings to the owner (I presumed it was the owner, but she might have been the GM) and to Matt, the bartender. I actually liked that, because I was able to gauge the owner's knowledge of her inventory as well as her preferences. I was impressed with the owner, and the way she made decisions - she seemed very knowledgeable of price, inventory, taste, selection, and competitors offerings. I also liked that she looked to her bartender for input on alcohol purchases, or to get a second opinion.
I am not a huge sushi person, and I knew that Noah Grant's was a sushi bar, but they have other dishes. I ordered the filet and had it served with Noah's Mill Bourbon Peppercorn. I had a baked potato as a side (a la carte).
Food: filet was cooked to specifications; arrived in a timely fashion; was an excellent cut of beef, and I especially enjoyed the peppercorn sauce (essentially filet au poive). Given that, I still thought it was priced a bit high -- $36.99 for an 8 oz. filet. Baked potato was an extra $4 or $5.
Drinks: Bombay Sapphire and Tonics were made well, and priced a little on the high side of normal; I can't recall exactly, but I'd say around $6.50 per drink. I was there for several hours and had four or five drinks. Each one was well made and not slopped together. Glasses were clean and unchipped; lime garnishes were fresh and crisp.
Price point: My bill (before gratuity) was $81.00. At least $43 of that was one filet and one baked potato. The rest was alcohol. So, at approximately $50 - $55 per person (depending on how you tip), you can expect to drop some serious change in here, if you are dining off the dinner menu. I imagine sushi and other dishes would run you less, although you are still looking at a substantial bill, especially if you add alcohol.
Staff: I interacted with Matt, the bartender, with whom I am personally acquainted, so I had great service. I did observe other servers working efficiently and with smiles and positive attitudes. I also observed several "regulars" enter and sit at the bar, which is usually a tacit recommendation of good service.
Overall, I will dine again at Noah Grant's, but I cannot afford to eat there often, and as I'm not really a seafood / sushi person, I will most likely dine there infrequently.
I would recommend it for a date night, or special group occasion, or if you just have the money to eat pricey, well-prepared food.
Typically I'm skeptical of any raw bar more than 100 miles from the coast. Â Sure, plenty of restaurants will tout that their fish is "flown in daily", but flown in from where? Â Chicago? Â So it takes one day from Chicago to Indy, but how long was it in Chicago before that? Â And how long did it take to get from the boat, to the processor, to the plane that went to Chicago? Â
Anyway, I'll end my rant and say that for a landlocked restaurant in central Indiana, Noah Grant's has changed my opinion of raw bars in the midwest. Â
There are few places within a days drive where you can select from a menu of over a half dozen different types of oysters, in addition to an eclectic selection of mussels, shellfish, and countless numbers of sushi rolls.
Instead of ordering full entrees, we ordered a mix of mussels prepared with a tasty coconut milk broth; ceviche, PEI oysters, crab and artichoke dip, and the famous Butter Cake. Â YUM YUM.
Ok. So first, get there at 8:45pm. Before we called to see when they closed, (which was at 10). Plenty of people were there, so we didn't feel bad bringing our business there late. Â
1. Waitress was extremely condescending. Â Dont know her name, but she was really skinny and had a high pitched voice.
2. Â Food was tasty but overpriced. Â My boyfriend got the tuna, which was good. Â I got the vegetable risotto which was bland.
3. This was the first time I had ever ordered a martini but was extremely disappointed. Â Got the "Dirty Girl Martini". It was delicious! I drank maybe 1/5 and a bug fell into it. Â I politely ask for another one. Â If she had told me that there woud be another charge, I could have dealt with that INSTEAD I was brought a "new" martini that the "gracious" and "wonderful" bartender had whipped up for me. Â All it was was olive juice in a martini glass. Â Needless to say, I was and still am pissed. Â However, I don't know if this was just the bartender's fault or who was in on it. Â
So. Save your time and money. I would rather go somewhere twice as expensive and tasteless than to have to deal with noah grant's awful, horrible service again.
Reason for Visit: I saw a picture of the "Fire-breathing Dragon Roll" on my Urbanspoon app on my Iphone. Being a huge fan of eel and dragon roll's in general I was excited. Â The presentation looked wonderful in the picture with the delicious sushi roll doused in blue flames.
Hospitality: The wait staff was very nice, although a tad slow for a thursday night. I was very impressed by a small dry-erase board that marked our reserved table with a friendly personal message. It made me feel very welcome.
Decore/ Eating Space: We ate in the bar, there was a very tasteful wall fountain behind the bar with two tv's both turned to espn. The room was cozy with a very upscale feel. Â The bathroom was clean with real towels to dry your hands with. Â Very nice.
Food: I ordered a Ginger Salad and a "Fire-breathing Dragon Roll" and "the Crackling Shrimp Roll". Â
The Ginger Salad dressing taste like what you would expect from a typical japanese style ginger sause. The portions are much larger than your typical ginger salad though. Â Unfortunately most of the lettuce is of the iceberg variety.
When the "fire-breathing dragon roll" came out I was very excited. I got my camera out ready to snap a few pictures of the blue flames. But we never got to see it. Â Our waitress held it high above our heads as she "slayed the dragon" or put out the flames before we could enjoy it. Â Instead of the plate it came on in the picture, it was wrapped in aluminum foil. The rolls where not cut well and the seaweed skin pulled out from under my roll dumping it's contents onto the table. Â Once I finally got it's payload into my mouth it was quite delicious. Â The smoked salmon added a very distinct and satisfying flavor to the typical eel sause. There was a generous amount of cream cheese included as well. Nothing tasted fishy, or unpleasant at all. My friend who went with me claimed it was the best tasting sushi he's had since Japan.
The Crackling Shrimp Roll was a pleasant surprise for me. Â These where wrapped very tightly and easy to eat. Â They had a very satisfying tempura style crunch to them, and they where covered in eel sause. Â Oh how I love eel sause! It wasn't on fire but at least it was on a plate instead of aluminum foil. Â I actually preferred the crackling shrimp roll over the dragon roll presentation aside.
Conclusion: Â I didn't try anything but the Sushi but I came away feeling the experience was satisfying and I will be back to try more of the menu. Just don't expect the food to look like the picture.
This is one of our go to restaurants. The service is always fantastic and the menu has something to please everyone. Â If you are looking for a great sushi meal then look elsewhere, but if you want a couple of rolls as an appetizer to go with a great meal then you should be happy with what you get here. Â The seafood is fresh and tasty. Â The atmosphere is elegant but small town comfortable. The oysters are top notch. Try the bipimbop for something different.
Review Source:Sangria was excellent. Â Sushi was really fresh but terribly put together (fell apart). Â Crab cakes were really good. Â Steak was very good....petite Filet is just right size so you have room for Sushi beforehand. Â Service is very good as well. Â Improve the sushi presentation (and lower the price) and they would be at 5 stars.
Review Source:PEASE READ ALL THE WAY TO THE END
Well, I'm not sure how I should actually rate this place. It really needs to be rated as 2 separate restaurants. It was a hectic day and a hectic evening. With 4 children there was a lot of driving, dropping off and picking up! Again it seemed that it was just going to be my son and me for an early dinner while waiting to pick up the girls. As normal my son wanted sushi. We were in zionsville and had heard good things of Noah Grants. I had been here previously when under the old ownership. The place is extremely cozy and the staff is very attentive, which always makes for a good experience. We were there between 4 and 6 PM when they have 1/2 Price oyster specials. I couldn't pass that up so I ordered 1 dozen Blue Points! They came out promptly and were nice. Now I began looking at the menu for my main course. They have just about everything on their menu including a complete list of sushi. My son opted for the sushi and ordered 3 Rolls. I went with the special of the evening which was Stir fried Maine Lobster with bay scallops and soba noodles.
Now for the rating and the reason I feel it should be looked at as 2 different entities. If it were for the oysters and stir fry I would go 4 stars with service as excellent. If I were to rate the sushi I would say overpriced and completely underwhelming. Wimpy little rolls that fell way below the mark and fell apart when picked up. I would go 2 stars on the sushi. If not for the service it would have been less. If I'm going to spend $11 to $15 on a roll it will be at Tegry where they are masterfully crafted and delicious.
In summation let me say this:
1 Star Sushi
4 Star food
5 Star Service and Ambience.
Go here for the main menu. If you are a sushi aficionado, as I like to "think" I am, Stay away from the Sushi!!
My wife and I had a coupon and thought we would try this place out. From the minute we arrived it was an excellent dining experience.
Friendly service and near immediate seating (with a reservation).
We started our meal with a seared peppercorn crusted tuna from the saw/sushi bar and it was one the best I've ever eaten. It was perfectly seared, which is to say VERY little and the quality of tuna seemed to top notch.
My wife had the tilapia dish and seemed to be impressed. After much indecision I ended up getting the Fish tacos which is a favorite of mine if they are done right (and so rarely are). I was pleasantly shocked at the presentation of the meal. The blackened fish (tilapia I think, I forgot) was on the plate as if I had ordered a fresh cut of fish alone. All the fixings for the tacos were on the plate along side it. The taco fixings included: Fresh seasoned "dressing", avocado slices, lettuce, an amazing pineapple based salsa diced nicely, and to top it off warmed fresh tortillas.
I was in heaven.
Service was prompt, polite, and knowledgable. We will definitely be trying noah grant's again, coupon or not!
Can I curse on here??? Because if I could, I would say HOLY SH*T, in reference to Noah Grant's! My experience at this place was OOC! (Out of control!) My pallet still begins to water when I talk about it!
After being referred to this place by MANY Zionsville folk, I decided to give it a try with my girlfriends last month. We knew it would be a little expensive so we prepared and planned for that. We made reservations and even though it was busy when we arrived, we were seated immediately. We had the soft-shell crab as an app and it was to-die-for! I think it was a special but they should definitely make it part of their formal menu. The bread and water fill ups were plentiful and consistent by the waitress support team! The wine by the bottle was diverse, affordable and delicious!
My main meal was good, but not as amazing as my friends. I had the Sole in a butter/garlic sauce. My friends had the fish tacos and the seafood pasta. Their main dishes were far superior to mine. And I'm partially attributing this to my fault for ordering the Sole which is usually mild anyways. We shared the green beans and mac & cheese, which again were just simply amazing. For dessert we had this vanilla souffle cake entity, which was divine. Apparently, it is a Noah Grant's original, and definitely the best from what I could tell. (As previously posted I consider myself a dessert expert!)
Even though this place has sushi, I wouldn't waste my time. You can get sushi ANYWHERE, but you can get flavors like these at many places in Indy.
I also wanted to say that I noticed an ad on Craig's List from Noah Grants looking for a bilingual teacher/tutor to help their staff communicate! I thought this was extremely noble of the NG owners' to make their workplace more friendly and diverse by helping their employees understand each other!! PROPS!
My two girlfriends and I enjoyed this place for a little girls night out, and we all had good things to say when we left!
It was a Friday night and very busy when we arrived, but were seated immediately per our reservation. The waitress was very pleasant, even when we were asking several questions about the menu. Â There were so many things I wanted to order that it was hard to choose!
All of our food was amazing but the best thing was the soft shell crab app that we all shared! Â It was the best thing I've eaten in a very long time!
I came home raving to my husband about it, so now I just have to take him back with me so I can try some more of those dishes that I was debating about!
Readers Digest version: Â Good service, good food, good atmosphere, fair price.
Details, Details: Â We ate here on a very slow Sunday, to the point that we were the only people in the restaurant. Â My wife had the Caesar salad (came wrapped in a long cucumber slice - very cool presentation) and said it was outstanding. Â She also had the crab cake appetizer and a couple crab won-tons for dinner. Â She loved both of them. Â I tried a won-ton - it had a bit too much...cream cheese?...in it for me, but was very good. Â And huge. Â And if I remember correctly about $2.99 per won-ton. Â But they're big. Â Size of a hockey puck.
I had two types of sushi, the spider rolls and the spicy tuna. Â The spicy tuna was very good, and the spider roll had a lot of crabmeat. Â The spider roll wasn't my favorite, but I have heard other people love them.
We did eat here a few months ago (pre Yelp) and it was also very good. Â
I would recommend eating in the bar if you can, as it has much better atmosphere.
Ever since moving to Zionsville, I have had my eye on Noah Grants as a restaurant I wanted to try. This past week, for our two year anniversary I got my chance. I had heard some really good things about it, and they did not disappoint. My husband had mentioned it was our anniversary when he made the reservation and we were seated in a private area with an intimate table and curtains that surrounded it. We started off with a sushi roll as an appetizer...we got the "Maui" which had tempura shrimp, mango, avocado and cream cheese. It was refreshing and a perfect way to start. As for drinks-- I had a glass of their Sauvingnon Republic and it was delicious-- as well as in a HUGE glass.
For dinner-- I got the lake perch which was crispy, delicious and the cole slaw that came with it was refreshing and tasty. My husband opted for the meat loaf (A Noah Grant special) and he LOVED it. We also opted to split the bacon potatoes au gratin and they came out piping hot from the oven and ready to share (was quite a bit to split between two people, would probably be enough for a table of four to get a decent serving).
The portions were HUGE! Definitely a lot of food for the money. We took home leftovers of the meatloaf and the potatoes. Â When we had our plates cleared away our server came and offered us a dessert on the house on occasion of our anniversary. We opted for the creme brulee (it's a favorite dessert of ours and we like to try it at various restaurants). All in all it was delicious, intimate, and we will definitely go back. Personally, we would rank it at the top of the restaurants in Zionsville.
We had high hopes of Noah Grants. Being local Zionsville peeps, we would love nothing more than to have a restaurant nearby with atmosphere, food, and great service. Grant's failed on two o three fronts, sadly.
The sushi was horrible. Overcooked rice, fishy fish (if you're a sushi lover, you know what I mean), and high prices. They served our edemame room temp with SUGAR on it instead of salt. The teen waitress came out and apologized after we complained that she thinks she used the wrong thing.
The service was bumbling at best. Beside the sugar incident, our waiter (another young kid) didn't know much about sushi, and was inattentive.
Such a disappointment! We did like the atmosphere and the wine. :)
My second experience at Noah Grant's was not so great. Â The sushi was mediocre and much more expensive than competing sushi restaurants. Â The bread and oil that came out before the meal was good and the raw oysters were delicious.
The mojito I ordered on my second visit tasted nothing like the first mojito I had at Noah Grant's. Â I didn't even have mint in it! Â The Japanese beer I ordered after was $11. Â I know it's Zionsville, but $11!?1
Service was average.
Its been only a matter of weeks since we left Hawaii for Indiana, and naturally we were already craving the delectable taste of sushi! Being from Hawaii makes you spoiled for choice in the sushi/seafood world, and so we set out in order to find satisfaction for our craving.
Visiting http://Yelp.com we found a close sushi restaurant that received favorable reviews, so we hopped in the car and headed to Zionsville to try Noah Grant's. Zionsville is one of those cute little towns Indiana seems to have in abundance. Its quaint, country mom and pop stores are perfect for a lazy date in the afternoon. Unfortunately, parking near the restaurant can be difficult because of the lack of traditional parking spaces, so if you can find a spot on the street in front of the restaurant jump on it. Where we parked was under construction, so K got a nice sandal full of gravel when she set foot outside the car.
The restaurant itself looks like an old home that was renovated and has seating outside on the "porch" that's covered by screens. Nice if you don't like that awkward feeling of eating outside and having numerous passerbys stare at you while feeding your face. There was a small raw bar in the front, small to us because of the aforementioned familiarity with seafood in Honolulu, but it was nice anyway. The room we were seated in had soft comfortable lighting, with nice curtains and framed photography draped across the walls. The room was "private", curtains were utilized in doorways to section off the room and it had a certain sense of romance.
Now onto the important part, the FOOD. Noah Grant's has a decent sized menu with a lot of seafood at the forefront. Upon careful review we decided on the Spider roll and Noah's Monster, with a Oysters Rockefeller for appetizer. Noah's monster was described as a tempura style spicy tuna roll, and being as it was our first time here a spider roll and spicy tuna seemed an accurate litmus test for the overall quality of the sushi. The Oysters Rockefeller come highly recommended and didn't let me down. It's an Oyster on the half shell with creamed spinach and cheese dip in the middle, mmmm REALLY GOOD. The bread and pesto dipping sauce were surprisingly tasty, and I didn't see any other tables with it so be sure to remind your server to bring it.
The sushi however, was lacking in all categories :-( The spider roll: tempura is supposed to be crunchy and warm, no? So why would you drench it in yuzu and unagi sauce? The sheer amount of sauce was bad enough to overpower the sushi, and the taste was foul as well. A double whammy! It just didn't taste good.
The Noah's Monster: We knew something was up when we saw there was so much sriracha and mayo on top the sushi that I couldn't make out where the fish was. Turns out there was no fish to begin with, or at least not enough to write about. Once again, the sauce completely overpowered the flavor of the fish which pretty much negates why you're paying for it in the first place. We can get nori and rice from Walmart... its about the FISH people, the FISH! Lets put it this way: we never have anything to take home when we eat sushi and we didn't even eat half our meal. Our bill was $45 for two sushi entree's, beer and an appetizer. The pesto sauce was the only thing worth salvaging from this disaster.
Basically, we give this place 1 star because Paul, the server, was super cool, recommended a good beer and brought us the bread and pesto combo. The other star is for the Oysters Rockefeller and setting.
We may go back someday to try something completely different, but based on our experience for sushi... we won't be ordering any.
I know...I'm the only one to review this place, but I might have to keep doing so until some of you other Yelpers get out there and have a bite to eat here!
OMG...I cannot tell you how much I love it here! Â We went tonight b/c I was craving the fish tacos and although it is not on their dinner menu, they whipped me up some anyway - YAY!! Â
The staff is WONDERFUL. They were packed to the gill when we arrived and I was floored by how busy they were (exact opposite of a Friday lunch). Â They found us a table in less than five minutes. Â The hostess was young and friendly, bouncy and a bit stressed but she was definitely attentive and working very hard to make sure people were happy.
The manager (whom I wish I knew the name) was the one who accommodated my fish taco request (you have to understand... it is early pregnancy cravings that I cannot ignore!). Â She talked to the chef, and let us know it might take longer than normal, but they could definitely do them (yay!). Â Our waitress was incredibly sweet and over the top polite. Â Best service I've had in a LONG time. Â She was fantastic!
We started with the crab dip appetizer ($12) that was perfect for two. Â It was made with goat cheese and a TON of fresh crab. Â The dip was absolutely my favorite part of the meal. Â I could have indulged in another and skipped the fish tacos after that but MAN, am I glad I didn't. Â They are made like fajitas, coming out with everything on the side and tortillas in a warmer. Â The fish was Orange Roughy and was perfectly cooked, so flakey and fell apart on my fork! Â Sooooo goooooood. Â
My hubby had the Pike blackened. Â He commented that he could have done for a bit more spicy but it was perfectly cooked and delicious. Â We also had the green beans which were fresh and cooked with bacon. Â Does NOT get better than that!
My drink was never empty, our bill was average and we got a coupon for $20 off our next $40 purchase. We will definitely go back!! Â I love this place and highly recommend it!
I think the sushi and fresh oysters (from their gorgeous raw bar) is probably REALLLLLLY good though I am abstaining right now. Â Please try it and let me know, Yelpie Yelpers. Â I would love to hear about all the things I cannot indulge in right now!
