No nonsense breakfast in the heart of Wiamea is what you'll find at Obsessions Cafe. It was a humid Sunday morning, our stomachs were rumbling and the pickin's were slim. Thankfully Yelp was there to guide us to a restaurant to fulfill our breakfast desires. A blend of Hawaiian and mainland fare is available on the menu, and the staff is all business... not quite like a specific Seinfeld episode, but you'll find find out quickly enough.
How is one to decide what to do for breakfast, something sweet or savory?! When in doubt, and hungry enough, do both. An custom made omelette and an order of pancakes were selected from the menu. There are two syrups you can select from stored in squeeze like bottles, [sweet] coconut or traditional maple. The coconut syrup is pretty thick, and very sweet - overly sweet for me which made me opt for the maple instead. The pancakes were OK, nothing remarkable and no unique twist here. The phrase "no nonsense" comes to mind again when describing these pancakes. They're fluffy without disintegrated from syrup and not so rubbery that you can't use a fork to break off manageable bites. The omelette follows suit offering a generous portion of eggs and omelette type filler. It was definitely enough to satisfy my hunger, but again nothing really stood out.
The seating area is small and filled with plastic patio type chairs. There is a center island where thermoses of water and condiments are stored which can be more difficult to move around when there are people getting what they need. I don't recall there being any specific parking lot for Obsessions, but there is ample street parking available through the town. Even if you get a bad parking spot you're a couple of minutes away from the front door.
No nonsense breakfast, fare prices, hunger stands not a chance.
If you were in the south, oh yeah, you are in the south but just in Kauai! Â So if you were on the mainland and in the south, let's say Georgia or Alabama, this would be the equivalent to mom/pop kitchen where you miss it if you blink as you're driving by.
The location is in the town of Waimea and located amongst a mix of other small diners and locally owned spots to eat, relax, and enjoy life.
In keeping with the southern theme from above I would say the food follows the same suit....good old home southern cookin' that offers oversized plates of food slightly better than good but not fantastic. Â I am not downing this place, you should try it but as I begin to examine food and quality of ingredients I would say this is good food but not the best food.
I ordered the Ultimate Loco Moco which was a plate of about a cup (after cooking) rice topped with a large cubed steak (hamburger patty), cheese, two eggs cooked over medium and old school brown gravy ( a bit more thinner thank grandma's). Â The brown gravy had a mix of large cut onions and mushrooms. Â So, in a two word description, this dish was a 'hot mess' (in a good way). I would order it again just not weekly.
The restaurant itself is a bit small and handles about 15-18 people inside. Â I visited on a rainy day in Waimea so I looked around and decided to get the 'to go' option. They do have outside seating but it was early in the morning and I didn't want a wet chair print on my backside :-)
I will return again in the future, maybe the staff will be a bit more outgoing if I become a regular???
This little cafe is perfect for grabbing a quick breakfast and coffee before heading into the canyon.
We split the french toast and the denver omelet w/ hash-browns. Â Both were delicious!
The french toast was just right and made with nice, thick, sweet pieces of bread. Â Be sure to try the coconut syrup!! Â So good!
The denver omelet was amazing, was a good size, and came with a large helping of hash-browns and two slices of toast. Â The vegetables in the omelet were fresh and the mix of flavors was perfect.
Hrs are Wed-Sun, 6am-2pm. Â It's open earlier than most of the other breakfast options and it's well worth the stop!
We had French toast and coffee. Â For us, the French toast was a bit too sweet as the bread was already sweet. Â I remember we ate here a few years ago. Â That time was ok as well.
How it works: Order at the counter. Â Get your drink and utensils at the center island. Â
Tip1. This place opens very early like 6:00. Â
Tip2. No bathroom at the restaurant. Â Use the next door Big Save bathroom by the cashier #1, there is a key.

Skip it and go somewhere else. Â Menu lists a scrambled egg and cheddar cheese sandwich but its actually served with American cheese (yuck). Â Food is mediocre and served on paper plates. Â Quite bland and boring. Â So sad that this is the only breakfast option in Waimea. Â
If you're on the west side of Kauai head 15 min. further east and visit Hanapepe Cafe or a little further to Kalaheo Cafe - both are MUCH better breakfast options.
I can honestly say I did not have high expectations of this place. Now you need to understand when you are in Waimea, Kauai there isn't much choices. Â My previous places did not hold well, so I was ready for another disappointment. Â I actually been here before but did not remember to much about it, so lets see about round 2.
The prices are nothing to go crazy about. Waimea even though it borders a plantation village of Kekaha it still considered a touristy area. It is the gateway to the Waimea Canyon, basically saying its the last stop before the 45 minute drive to the canyon. Â So the prices didn't surprise me. Prices are about $6 to $10. Its a breakfast/brunch spot so you have to check out before you head up to the canyon.
I was very happy to hear that they make their own bread. Â I love my sandwiches, having been to New York I understand a perfect sandwhich. Due to prices Hawaii will never live up to the price and quality of New York. Â Meat will never be cheap in Hawaii so places need to other things to stand out. Making your own bread makes a difference.
I ordered the Pastrami sandwhich I was extremely happy of the overall taste of the homemade bread, fresh meat and yummy dressing. Â They should really emaphasize and advertise the fact they make their own bread. I'm not saying it was the best sandwich I had, but I think it beats Giovanni Hawaii. It may be dependant on what you order but I was happy of my choice. Â Do I have an obsession, no (feel like putting on cologne for some reason) however it will lure me back. Its OBSESSION for men and women. Do I sound like the commercial?
While on Kauai, we always enjoy trying new breakfast places......and stumbled across this please in Waimea while heading up the westside. Â We actually were waved-in by some locals sitting outside the place, who lunged at the opportunity to mess with some tourist haoles looking around for a good place: "Eh Brah, You'll like! It's just like IHOP" he said, as they all chuckled. Â So we gave it a try (reluctantly).
Strange set-up - you order your food at the counter, and they bring it to you on paper plates. Â I had the 2 eggs and Portuguese sausage. Â The scrambled eggs were slimy & undercooked, the hash browns dry and crunchy, and the sausage was WAY too salty. Â My girl had an egg sandwich, which she wasn't too fond of either. Â I also agree with the other reviewers that the coffee was terrible - kinda burnt tasting.
Overall, you pay for what you get: cheap food, paper plates, and plastic cutlery. Â They were very friendly there, but sadly we'll not stop through here again for breakfast - maybe lunch sometime?
Good, homemade food with absolutely no frills.
There's not much to see at Obsessions Cafe. It's just a little breakfast spot in a little town with a pretty small breakfast menu (a couple of breakfast sandwiches, a handful of omelettes, and loco moco). But what they do, they do extremely well.
I had the denver omelette, which was cooked to perfection, with fresh, wholesome ingredients. The standout was the homemade slice of toast they put on the side. Absolutely fantastic homemade bread! Usually, I skip toast on the side of my breakfast, but I'm glad I didn't this time.
My date for the morning had the breakfast sandwich with bacon, egg, and cheese. It was completely mouth-watering, served on another delicious homemade bun. These folks know how to make bread!
A couple of surprises: they are only open Wed-Sat. Also, they don't serve espresso, despite the word "cafe" in the title.
Don't go to Obsessions looking for a fancy meal. They don't do fancy at Obsessions, but they do serve amazing food.
I give it 5 stars simply based on the fact it's been the best loco moco I've eaten anywhere. Â The patty is so moist and flavorful, you can't beat it. Â Had the hamburger steak plate too, very tasty. Â The sandwiches are pretty good, but loco moco or hamburger steak is the only way to go. Â They also have a loco moco supreme or something along those lines, with portuguese sausage, cheese, mushrooms, in addtion to the brown gravy, egg, rice, and delicious patty. Â Can't lose at this place.
Review Source:If you are staying in Waimea or on your way to Waimea Canyon - this is the place to go. My husband and I went to all sorts of pancake spots to get some yummy pancakes (it's really all he ever wants to eat for breakfast). We tried Ono Family Restaurant (the door to the kitchen was open and they had all their ingredients from Costco - including Krusteaz mix), we tried some other place with strawberry syrup and we ended up making our own at our cottage. Then we went to Obsessions...
It's just a little whole in the wall - we were the only people eating their both times we went. Some surfers pick up food to go but otherwise - it was just us and the cook. He's a nice guy and makes yummy food. It's not healthy by any means, but it's good. They also don't have alot of options but it's priced fairly and they make a mean pancake.
Certainly a small local spot, me and Mika stopped in for a late breakfast earlier today. I got the Ultimate Loco Moco, lots of eggs, gravy, sausage, rice and cheese. Mika got a mushroom omelet, some hash browns and toast.
The food overall was so-so. It was pretty cheap (under $20 for the both of us including coffee, which was a bit burnt) so I can understand if it all seemed a bit slopped together. My Loco Moco was huge, delicious for about half the meal then it just was a bit too much. Mika's dish seemed nothing out of the ordinary or different than your run of the mill breakfast place.
The service was what you'd expect, straight to the point, nothing more nothing less. The only employee actually left the restaurant for a bit, missing a phone call, while we where there to hang out with some friend at the nearby grocery store.
Probably wouldn't go back, but for the price it fared well.
Great place to have breakfast before hitting the beaches at Poilihale State Park. Â Fresh baked breads and rolls, HUGE Loco Moco, ono omelets, AMAZING French Toast, great Breakfast Sandwiches served on fresh baked buns. Â Friendly owner is a very cool, laid back guy. Â Was fun talking story with him. Â Will always hit this place while on the Garden Isle. Â Aloha Nui!
