Cute, cozy, quaint... in other words, small. I will forgive you, mister waiter, for not knowing what I wanted when I asked for "a pint" on account that you provided otherwise excellent service. A bit cramped, a bit loud, and full of charm.
I love the food here; always have, always will. It is what you would see in a dictionary when you look up "pub food" if your dictionary happened to have pictures. Want to get fat and sloppy? Order the endless fish and chips. Feeling on the healthy side after your fourth trip to the gym today? Grab a tasty salad. I find that Old Bag has something for everyone.
The drink selection at this Old Bag is pretty good. It is not the World of Beer, but you should be able to find something good. Settle down with a pint of Guinness, snack on some fried pickles, and feel good.
Service is HORRIBLE.
Went with family for an early dinner. It was 4pm on a Saturday. Food was just OK. That is for the food that was made right. The server was nowhere to be found, the "manager" was busy hanging out with a table of loud, obnoxious women getting drunk (again, 4pm on Saturday). When we asked for the incorrect food to be remade, the server seemed to not care, and brought the food back, but without the side. Never came back, so we could not ask for the side item to be brought out. No chance of getting the "manager" (again, busy with the obnoxious women). Not a place to take family for dinner.
Will not return under any circumstances.
If you want to have bad service, mediocre food, and listen to a table of wannabe Stepford Wives, then this is the place for you.
I work just up the street and call the Old Bag for lunch at least once a week. They have a good variety of food (ok, it's not authentic Irish food but it's a chain for god's sake, what do you expect?) and the service has always been good. They have a good variety of beers on any given day and a nice amount of seating. Just wanted to put in my 5 star review to help my neighbors out & offset some of these other reviews from people with unreasonably high expectations.
Review Source:I came back to Columbus for a visit and met a couple of my friends for dinner at the Old Bag of Nails. Â Came in on a Friday evening and was able to get a table fairly quickly without a wait. Â
Food was good as always. Â I always enjoy coming here as you do not typically get this type of autmosphere at any restaurant.
I haven't been to Old Bag of Nails for years....but the hubby and I had a hankering for fish and chips.....so why not. Â Oh....plus, we had to go somewhere kid friendly since we had our daughter in tow. Â It wasn't overly busy on a Sunday night, but there were people there filling the bar and most of the tables. Â Our server was great and really did cater to our little one (always appreciated).
Guinness in hand and fish and chips on the way, we enjoyed a very relaxing time as a family. Â Patrons in there were so nice to our daughter too. Â Talking to her and asking her lots of questions. Â She is quite the social butterfly, so she enjoyed this very much.
Fish and chips were delish! Â Our daughter didn't care for the macaroni & cheese she ordered, but she ate fish off our plates and enjoyed it very much. Â Plus, come to find out Sunday night is kids eat free. Â That's always a pleasant surprise!
I always love an excuse to be in downtown Worthington whether for Graeters, weekend morning farmers market, or a quick bite to eat. This was my first time at Old Bag of Nails and after being begged for a month I gave in. My husband did his work training across the street and went there every day for lunch with his co-workers and I would here stories every night about it, mainly about the food and rumors of how 'nice dingy' it was. It made no sense until I walked in. There are only a handful of tables all crowed together and also a small bar. The feel is very 'back in the day' rustic chiq with a tad bit of Irish/British flare. Totally nice & dingy at the same time, clearly a Worthington pub. When I say dingy, I dont mean dirty or run down, Im talking strickly on apperances. This place was spotless and had nice charm to it, but dingy none-the-less. There is no better way to describe the vibe then 'nicely dingy.' Getting on with it, there are pictures along the walls and a nice half wall stocked with old beer cans (A nice touch), the tables are old wooden rickety things but also sturdy. The watresses are nice but have an attitude about them that makes you feel at ease; theyre nice, sarcastic, and laid back...not prissy or pushy. I usually have a hard time relaxing in new places but even I was comfy here.
The food is good too, not the greatest. It seems if youre in the area and want a nice meal this is the place to be. By no means will I seek this pub out for my weekly dinner out. The food claims to be pub fare, but being Irish I knew better. Its a British place that serves French Onion soup, steak fries, and hot wings (which were good but a little dry). I always get a Guniess when I go to a pub, its kind of a test I do to see if they know what theyre doing. For all of you who may not know, beer is beer and Guiness is something special. It has a very unique way of needing to be poured that if you dont do it right the beer tastes like the worst crap you could ever drink, but when done right it's thick and creamy has the hint of coffee, very easy beer to drink. I hate beer, but I love Guiness. I was even at the factory in Dublin Ireland where I learned way more then I ever really cared to know. Now Im going on and about this for a reason. I mentioned how Guniess is really picky and has to be done right, and I have never had a perfect pint away from the Ireland. Old Bag of Nails almost had it right, and that says a lot. They may not be an Irish place but they knew what they were doing so that was impressive.
I ordered the fish and chips (something I swore off after having it in ireland...really just breading with a little bit of fish inside) since the Guiness was good. I was hopeing it was closer to the British formula then Irish. I love being irish, but their food sure can be weird! Long story short, they brought be have a cod....and then asked if I wanted any more once I finished. I was amazed anyone could possibly eat another bite after already having had half a fish. Flavor wise it was yummy, lots of fish compared to breading. After a while it did get a bit soggy. Just a tip but if youre getting the fish & chips dont order an app. Save room, unbuckle you belt, and make sure you come hungry.
They feed you well, get you nice and watered, the waitresses talk you up and make you feel at home...and theyre cheap. I wont be going every week, but Ill deff be back soon.
Every town needs a 'town bar.' Old Bag of Nails hits the mark on every point and im proud to have them in our town!
This place is great! They have an awesome happy hour from 2-7pm. The fish and chips are delicious and we enjoyed the fried pickles for an appetizer with our beers. Good drink specials and full bar selection. The fried pickles came out real hot and were amazing! The basket of fish and chips were good and had huge pieces of fish. Great place to eat and definitely going back soon!
Review Source:Mediocre food. That's ok it's pub food...but there is no excuse for the service. It's one of those places where the servers and bartender think that their job is to socialize w each other while you wait around for someone wait on you... Very poorly trained and managed. Clearly the management is the problem here and that usually means it should be on Kitchen Nightmares! Enough said, you've been warned!
Review Source:So I ordered the Turkey Reuben because I didn't want anything greasy. Â Turkey on rye w/ cheese & coleslaw, right? Â Well, they served it GRILLED! The menu said NOTHING about grilled! Â Man, that thing was the ultimate in greasy but without the enjoyment & taste of good fried food. Â And you needed a microscope to find the slaw. Â And was that really swiss cheese? Â Didn't taste like it. Â Disappointing. Next time I go there, I'll stick to the fried fish which is the best in town.
Review Source:This place rocks! The atmosphere is so laid back, they have a huge array of beers, and food that is so good that my mouth is actually watering right now.
Be prepared for a short wait on weekend nights, but if you go during the day for lunches there is never a wait. The staff is always super friendly and won't hesitate to strike up a conversation with you.
I am one of those 'always order the same thing' people, so mostly this review is for what I tend to get. I always start with french onion soup, it is classic. It is so incredibly good; they make it exactly how it should be made. Delicious. I have also had their lobster bisque [which is a soup of the day some days] and it is definitely quality. I feel like a good bisque is hard to get right, but they definitely make one worth trying.
Now the main event, the New England Reuben. Such a phenomenal sandwich. It's a fishes take on a normal Reuben. It has their awesome fish, topped with melted, gooey cheese, thousand island, and coleslaw. It is stellar. I've also heard that their normal reuben is off the charts.
If you want a good, laid back atmosphere and good food for your buck, this is a great place to check out!
Great Happy Hour place. Â They have 1/2 off of appetizers which includes Chicken Nachos and Mussels & Shrimp. Â They also decent deals on import drafts and well drinks.
I actually was shocked at their on tap selection as I could have any of my top three choices ( Killians, Lienenkugels, Great Lakes) as well as some other nice options.  The beer was cold and frothy which was refreshing on a hot day.  I wouldn't go nuts over their Chicken Nachos but I was hungry enough for them.  I probably would choose an entree next time even if it is not half off.  The mussels and shrimp were pretty good and for $6 not a bad deal.  Their menu is standard bar food.  The place was a good place to have a nice conversation with a friend I hadn't seen in a year.  The service was friendly but not a nuisance.  Parking was not a problem as I found a number of empty spots right in front.  Nice location to walk off a buzz or go grab coffee nearby.
This is my favorite place for fish & chip!! Â And wash it all down w/ Young's Chocolate Stout! Â The fish is light & flaky.. chip is always done right & crispy. Â I had eaten around the world.. this is definitely one of the best place you can get fish & chips outside of UK.
Must also try the fried mushroom & pickles... GREAT!
I had moved away from Columbus for 3 yrs... and I still think about those fish & chip!
This is my favorite Pub. I've been to this location and the Westerville location, but I feel guilty buying beer in Westerville, and I prefer the food at this one.
All I have to say is that if you go here, don't screw around and try to outsmart yourself. Fish and Chips is the way to go. With Guiness. The fish is light and flaky, and the batter is crispy and rich, just like fried fish should be. The fries are of the steak fry variety, and always done well - not soggy, which can be a problem with steak fries.
I like that the place is small and feels like a cozy bar. This is the kind of place you'd expect to find on the upper east side in New York, and not in Worthington, except thast it's uch cleaner, and they always show the Buckeye games. It actually fits in very well with the surroundings.
After the exhausting work of wine tasting for 2 hrs across the street, the girlfriend and I were famished so we decided to seek out some grub nearby. Seeing as I had heard good things and it was right across the street we decided to give it a try.
When we walked in it was about half full as the OSU vs. Michigan game was still going on but there was enough people that it certainly didn't feel deserted. We were seated promptly and we had several tvs to choose from to watch the game.
The menu is your standard pub fare with Fish n Chips, Reuben sandwiches, burgers, and a few other seemingly specialty items. I started looking over things and while I was tempted to get the Fish n Chips seeing as how much I like it I decided to be adventurous and get a burger as I don't normally do. I opted for the Rustic Burger with blue cheese, onion straws, and bacon ordered medium rare. My girlfriend opted for the sliders.
While we were waiting I looked around it was definitely going for the rustic aesthetic with the woods paneling and bar and the more oldy feel. It was nice and cozy and although it was definitely more slender than I would have expected I didn't feel crunched. They offered a good selection of beer but seeing as I was just finished drinking I opted to pass but remembered this for next time.
Quickly enough our food came out and my burger looked good but the real test was in the flavor. It hit me right in the face with flavor from the blue cheese and bacon and it was great. The burger was cooked perfectly and it was a nice relief where usually I get it overcooked from where I want it. The fries were your standard thick cut style and were competently cooked. They weren't knock your socks off but they weren't terrible.
My girlfriend really liked her sliders and onion rings a lot. I thought that the sliders were pretty solid and were maybe a little on the bland side for me, which may have been a result of my flavor bomb, but she thought they were great. Her onion rings were stellar though, as they were thick cut and not too flakey but crunchy enough.
Seeing as I just had spent the last 2 hrs drinking wine and beer I knew I was going need some sweets before we headed out. I looked and saw that they had a homemade Carrot Cake and I was sold immediately. Well actually it was a bit of a struggle with the Bread Pudding but in the end the Carrot Cake won out. It was served chilled, which is actually my preferred temp when it comes to carrot cake and it was a huge piece at a great price. It was pleasantly crumb like in texture with a good cream cheese icing to go with it. It may not have been the best I have ever had but it was definitely a good version and far above many I have had.
In the end we walked out for under $25 which I thought was great considering the two of us were stuffed. The service was great and prompt and our waters never were less than half empty before we left. All in all a great experience and looking forward to stopping by in the future when I have a good excuse.
Went here for dinner on a Wednesday night. The place was crowded, but the service was still very good. They have a decent beer selection on tap, and serve standard pub fare, and the appropriate level of grease is there.
My turkey reuben was good, though it could have been toasted a bit more thoroughly.
If you're in the worthington area this place is worth a try, but nothing special.
The Place: The Old Bag of Nails ("OB") on High St. in Worthington is a TINY little SMALL itty-BITTY place. The atmosphere within is very bar-like, a bit dark, and very cramped. It's kind of got that little hole-in-the-wall-English-pub-type feel to it, which is, I'm assuming, what they were going for. I don't mean to use every adjective in the book describing OB as small to be a NEGATIVE thing. I don't mind small restaurants at all. One should just know before-hand that this place tends to be crowded even on slow nights, and may not be the best place to bring a large group or someone who has trouble navigating small spaces (ex: someone in a wheelchair). For those people, I'd recommend traveling to another OB location (ex: Westerville), that is more spacious. Aside from those concerns, this OB location is clean and comfortable - no complaints.
The Food: First I will snag some words from my review of the Westerville location: "In a word: fantastic. The menu is large and full of bar-food staples and favorites." The same goes for this location. I got the Blackened Cajun Burger with fries, and it was quite good. The ingredients were high quality, and the burger and fries were cooked well, and with care. My girlfriend had a sandwich (can't remember which one, exactly), and she enjoyed it.
As for the menu, there are upwards of 13 appetizer options (including the FANTASTIC deep-fried pickles), 4 soup options, 7 salad options, 4 seafood-entrees, 1 steak-entree, 1 chicken-entree, 1 pasta-entree, 1 roast beef-entree, 14 sandwiches, 9 burgers, 3 quesadillas and 5 desserts (including the FAMOUS deep-fried Snicker's Bar). Sides include (delicious) onion rings, fries, mashed potatoes, potato cakes, vegetables, fruit, cole slaw, chips and hushpuppies. Everything I've tried (at any location) or anyone with me has tried has been very good.
The Drinks: I had a Sam Adam's Boston Lager draft, and my girlfriend had a Blue Moon draft. The drink menu offers 26 foreign bottled beers (including rarities like: Tetley's, Pilsner Urquel, McEwan's Scottish Ale, Fuller's 1845 Ale, Tennants, Belhaven St. Andrew's Ale, Old Speckled Hen and Paulaner Hefe Weizen ), 5 European draft beers, 10-or-so run-of-the-mill American beers (some draft, some in bottles), and 7 cider-beers. The wine menu offers 11 selections ranging from $10-18 per bottle.
The Price: Reasonably inexpensive for the quality of the food. Nine dollars for a burger or sandwich, $10 -14 for entrees, including steak and seafood options.
The Service: Our server was slow because she was juggling upwards of 10 tables. I'm not going to lay blame on her for that. I am, however, going to lay blame on the management for failing to staff accordingly. Aside from being a bit on the slow side, our server was very nice, and frequently apologetic for her inability to visit our table more often. It troubles me that I've had slow service at two locations, and that so many other people have complained of the same thing. Are they trying to save some money, or is this a case of mismanagement?
Overall: I gave the Westerville OB 4 stars. I knocked off a star there because the service was (again) a bit slow. I'm doing the same here. If they could staff a little better and speed up service a bit, I think this would be a 5-star place. The food is great, the drink menu is great, and the price is right. Recommended.
I am a fan of Old Bag.
Ive only tried the Worthington location, but Ive had a consistent experience. its rather small inside, but Old Worthington is all about location. I am a bit wider than the small seats they give you, so when at all possible I ask for a table for three. ( Whether or not there are three of us, lol )
That being said I have learned that the key to this experience, is not waiting until you are out of food before ordering the next refill. Restaurants attempt to stall you out until you realize you are full. This way I'm able to stuff myself while its fun and suffer later !
I'd definitely recommend it. last time i was there i had my fish battered, then dipped in corn meal! That made the experience great for me.
I'm a Reuben addict so I'm always on the lookout for a restaurant near my home or work that sells them. Â When I realized that Old Bag of Nails had them on the menu I was ecstatic. Â I'd never eaten at this one before but several of my co-workers swear by it, so one evening I decided to give them a chance.
Big mistake.
Admittedly it was carry-out and that can ruin many a fine sandwich's texture, but I only work two minutes away and it wasn't only the texture that was lacking. Â The meat was chewy, overly fatty and oily on the tongue. Â The sauce was mediocre, and the bread hadn't been grilled long enough to even properly melt the cheese.
Color me unimpressed. Â From now on I'll bite the bullet and get to a real sandwich shop. Â Apparently Old Bag of Nails should stick to fish.
We are all talking about the same place, right? I've never given a 1-star review on Yelp, but this particular Old Bag of Nails Pub completely deserves it! We went there on a Saturday night and the place was dead. D-E-D, dead. Well, great, we thought, better service for us. Eh, not so much. Our server was ridiculously slow and literally had to come back to our table 4 times to tell us certain beers that we had ordered were out or no longer even being sold (including the Old Bag of Nails beer itself! No longer being sold and he didn't know that!).
The food is what you would get at any run-of-the-mill Applebees - as uncontroversially bland as possible. I have no idea why anyone would want to go out of their way to try out this place.
The food is great. Its really grown my enjoyment of fish, and the apps are really good. I'd suggest the deep fried mushrooms, also the boneless wings are a solid choice. Everytime i go i end up with the all you can eat fish and chips, i really need to branch off into the fisherman's platter. I can also attest that the quesadilla is epic and the salad selection is great.
Problem here is how crowded the place gets around dinner. Be ready to wait half an hour with no real place to sit. Its pretty much elbow to elbow in here, and every time i go there is at least one fat lady hooting and yelling with food falling out of her pie hole.
This is definitely the flag ship of this local chain and worth visiting if you don't live in the dublin/worthington hood.
I was lured here for the 1/2 price off EVERYTHING happy hour. My friend and I shared mozzarella sticks and pretzels which were your average bar fair, but of course they go over better when you are only paying half price. I complimented the cheese fest with a half and half which was served to me by an efficient yet surly bartender.
This place really gets jumping during happy hour and even later into the evening on Friday's. So arrive early and I don't recommend sitting at the bar. I suffered a bow to the back of the head several times since people were standing around behind me and I found myself coveting the booths.
After reading some of the reviews I thought that I'd give this place a shot, even though I've tried Pig Iron BBQ (owned by the same guy) and found it lacking.
So I went about 4 pm to beat the crowd and ordered their onion soup, which came with a healthy dose of cheese but could have stood more onions and a heartier crouton (would have kept it from falling apart). Â But it wasn't bad.
I then ordered the French Dip Sandwich. Â The presentation was great but the sandwich sucked. Â The meat was extemely overcooked and I only downed a quarter of it before sending it back. Â They exchanged it for a Reuben. Â This was better but the meat resembled something out of Krogers deli case. Â I ate half of it and left the other half on my plate. Â Wasn't even worth taking home.
The staff was nice, but I won't be going back.
In 1996, The Old Bag of Nails Pub opened its flagship location in charming Olde Worthington. Its name derived from the former hardware store it replaced. Â Having lived in England/Scotland and frequenting authentic British pubs, I can attest to the Bag's authentic atmosphere - at least in this location (while most of the other 9 locations have more of a pubby family restaurant feel to them).
Well done with its paneled walls and fun beer signs. It's dark and cozy and the narrow bar can become quite crowded on weekends. There's only a handful of tables, so expect a bit of a wait during busy times.
All of the Bag of Nails locations offer a fabulous selection of scotch and unusual beers on draught, but most people come for the kick-butt fish-n-chips. The bag features happy hour Monday through Friday, with half-priced appetizers and deeply discounted drinks. It also has a limited late night menu of munchies, served from 9 or 10 PM until close.
The service here is usually really good and somewhat quick since the place is so small. A small outdoor patio sits along High Street and is open seasonally. You'll find a mixed clientele. Old and young, People will drive from other neighborhoods for its atmosphere, while  local Worthington-ites treat this as their neighborhood bar.
You should definitely come to the Worthington Bag of Nails Pub with high expectations.
I was in Columbus on business and stayed at the Crowne Plaza Columbus North. The Old Bag of Nails was so good I actually made coworkers join me for lunch here two days in a row! Downtown Worthington is so quaint it's surreal. T.O.B.N.P.'s specials are unbelievable too...I don't know how they make a profit (Soup and Sandwich - $5). I didn't partake in the Happy Hour (2pm - 7pm), but you can't beat 50% off food & $1.75 drinks!
I might actually go back to Columbus just for The Old Bag of Nails Pub. I'll call it my "get back to my midwest values" vacation. :o)
As far as pub food goes The Old Bag of Nails is fantastic.
The staff is friendly and tries their best to seat you fast. Â
The menu is great. Â Their fish and chips are delicious. Â My husband favors the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. Â I love the French Dip and the Turkey Reuben.
Whatever you decide will be a good choice. Â We're lucky there isn't one in our neighborhood-we'd be huge!
While I wouldn't recommend bringing kids here they did have a high chair for Rease and sat us where she wouldn't be in a high traffic area.
