Like Yelper Mahmoud A., I was at first going to give Old Lux a 4-star since some would say the decor is outdated and a bit dark, and I've had better "to die for" seafood on the Coast........but when I thought about how much we enjoyed our meal, that I am NOT on the Coast, LOL, how friendly and attentive the staff was (especially when my husband knocked over the hot, clarified butter all over the table), what a great price it was for Steak & Lobster combo, and that overall, it was exactly what I had expected from reading the other Yelp reviews......I felt Old Lux deserved a 5-star rating!
One of our favorite things about the menu at Old Lux was the "warning" about the Steaks - that they could not be responsible for meat cooked OVER Medium temperature. Â Definitely MY kind of place! Â I just can't stand it when people take a great cut of steak, especially Prime and/or Aged, and cook it to a medium-well or God forbid, well done! Â Why not just throw your money out the window! Â You'd be better off eating a hamburger and saving your money. Â Just sayin'!
I had the 12 oz Ribeye (medium rare, of course!) and broiled 8 oz Lobster tail with baked potato and salad, while my husband enjoyed the same 12 oz med-rare Ribeye but with the Fried Lobster tail, baked potato with Chived Cheese sause (their specialty) and salad. Â Hubby even ate my side of chived cheese sauce since I don't eat Dairy.
There were lots of families dining there tonight on a Sunday evening (as we passed through Springfield on our way home from our Thanksgiving trip to Texas) and it reminded me of some of the great, old, family Steakhouses we had in various Chicago neighborhoods that are unfortunately no longer there.
So if you are ever driving down I-55 by Springfield and it is dinner time, take a short 3 mile drive off the highway to Old Luxemburg Inn. Â You won't be sorry!
This place is pure old school charm. Sweet tea and steaks? Yes, please. The cheese sauce that the restaurant is famous for is not too salty and just the right consistency for slathering on steaks. Don't be too thrown off by the rundown neighborhood. Yes, it may look a little sketchy to us Westerners, but c'mon, it's nothing compared to LA. And we had a rental car, so if it got stolen, not our problem!
If you've had a long day learning about Lincoln, you deserve a steak.
I was about to give this a four star review because it's simply not the best seafood you'll ever have, but then I sat back and reconsidered. The ambiance is great - it really feels like a perfect, antiquated seafood restaurant off some coastal town. The waiters are friendly, courteous, prompt, and helpful. The music and setting is great, the people are nice, and the food is good.
For what you pay, the portions are more than generous (my fried lobster tail was a bit on the small side, but the extra large mozzarella cheese stick appetizer, the large applesauce "salad" option, and the other goodies made up for that), and it's all around a good place to enjoy some great food. I can't speak for the steaks on their menu, but as far the as the seafood goes, it's as good as you're going to get when you're smack-dab in the middle of the USA, so far from both oceans. It's not 5-star lobster and shrimp, but it's a good, filling, old-fashioned meal.
What *was* amazing is the chives-and-cheese sauce that comes on the side w/ the baked potatoes - apparently, that was their speciality back in the day, and if you go, you absolutely must try it.
As other posters have mentioned, the restaurant is not exactly in the most up and coming part of the city (far from it), but don't let that scare you. Springfield is a safe and friendly place, and even the poorer neighborhoods, even if not the most scenic locations for such a treat of a restaurant, are not so dangerous as to be avoided. Definitely recommend.
