Convinced that I should NEVER order pizza in any of the large chains!
Its just not my cup of tea! I have been spoiled by the city's gourmet offerings that I can't settle for the cheesy mess that these chains call pizza. Ordered it in when we were in quick need of pizza for dinner for 10 people. Where's the sauce? where's the flavor? where's the ooey gooeyness I love in a pizza?
I don't know why in a city of great pizza I ordered Papa Johns. It was most likely some foolish sense of college nostalgia. Or a weird craving for their garlic butter. Whatever it was, I popped online and ordered some pizza and cheese sticks. What a mistake!
First off, this store has a laughably small delivery radius. Like maybe a mile tops. I don't know. I live pretty close, but nope, no delivery. Fine, I had to satisfy my craving and picked up the pizza.
The pizza itself was not what I remember. Bland. Doughy. The cheese didn't have a taste. The pizza sauce was basically ketchup with sugar added and pretty gross. The garlic butter has changed somehow. It's nowhere near as good as it used to be. The cheese sticks were probably the best thing because they didn't have that lousy sauce on them. Now I can understand why Papa John and Payton Manning can afford to give away millions of these flavorless Frisbees for free every NFL game day.
If you're reading this you live in Chicago. There are hundreds of great local pizza joints. Do yourself a favor and order from them instead. You'll actually get a pizza that tastes good.
Rarely do I feel it necessary to update a review, but Papa has earned it. Â We were in a pinch the other day, tired, hungry, and without anything in the 'fridge worth warming up. Â So we gave PJ another try. Â We ordered whatever the special was, but this time we thought to ask for a "well done" pie with extra sauce. Â That made all the difference. Fast delivery, nice driver, AND a good tasting pizza. Â
'nough said.
Not the best but certainly not the worst either. Â Fills the pizza craving that I had last night. Â The staff was great and the pizza was ready by the time I got there. Â the nice thing about this Papa John's is that they have a few chairs so if you want to grab a slice and eat there you can. Â I have no complaints and i'm sure i'll drop by a few more times whenever I need a quick pizza to go.
Review Source:They do not honor the specials advertised on their website, and for some reason you can't place a carry-out order online, it's delivery only (there is a button for carry-out, it just hasn't worked in at least three years). Â You would think with such a small delivery area, they would make it easy to place a carry-out order.
The guy on the phone was pretty douchey about the whole thing too. Â With all the other pizza options on the street why deal with these people that seem to take pride in being all around shitty human beings.
I came in here for lunch one day, just to grab a couple of slices of pizza. The pizza wasn't ready yet, but the workers told me to give them 15 minutes. I came back later, and they were still making the pizzas. I hung around for another 5 minutes before the slices were finally ready. The pizza was warm and fresh, but decidedly meh.
Now, I don't want to dump on the employees manning the shop; they were clearly trying to hustle and provide the best service they could. But given that a) at lunchtime, they ought to have pizza ready to sell, b) the Papa John's pizza is middling at best, and c) I paid $6 for two slices, your best bet is probably to head to one of the other pizzerias on Taylor Street. For $6, you can carry out an entire cheese pizza from Sofia's across the street, and it's just as good.
What's all the hype about?  I had a coupon for $10 for a large pizza w/ 2 toppings.  We said what the heck, 1.  we're new to the area so let's support the local places and 2. we were hungry so wanted something fast.  The order taker said it'll be ready in 15 minutes.  That was the first sign this may not be that good.  Most decent pizza places at least say 30-45minutes for pickup and one hour+ for delivery.  So I picked it up and got it home.  Looked good from the outside.. but it was already cold!  We warmed it up (which I would never expect from a carry out I just picked up), and took a bite.  Holy shit, this sucked!  My 2 year who loves pizza, stopped after the 3rd bite.  He looked at me like "Dad, you're cheap!".  My wife was skeptical of this place from the beginning but just like me, she said let's try it.  Never again!  She just started speaking to again  today.  If you're strapped for cash or just like cheap pizza, go ahead and try this.  Otherwise, pay the extra $5-$10 and get a decent pie!
Review Source:According to Papa John's website, I live exactly 1.28 miles away. Should be a shoe-in for a delivery, right? Well, if you used common sense and thought so like myself, you are dead wrong. The truth is (according to PJ staff): "We don't deliver that far."
Seriously, their delivery radius (or lack thereof) is the most ludicrous/ridiculous/absurd things I've heard in a long time. There are too many good pizza places in Chicago to deal with this kind of crap.
Really fast delivery I have to say.
This was my first and last time trying this pizza place. Â Too much bread. Â All i can taste was the bread. Â I thought they said better ingredients. umm in their BREAD maybe. Â I don't want to hold judgement on the location but all Papa Johns if they all taste the same.
I hate to write this as a negative review, but, I've got to do it. I've eaten pizza and various other items from this location many times while visiting my friends townhouse, and the food is always good... but the reason for the negative review is because the delivery radius of this place is pathetically small.
According to Papa Johns own website, My building is only 1.16 miles away from the store, but they wont deliver to me because I am north of Madison avenue. They are willing to go three miles west, and all the way to the lake, but north of Madison Avenue is apparently off limits...
and for that kind of insane, brainless, limited thinking... 1 star.
I haven't had Papa Johns since I was in High School visiting my sister at ISU. Â That's many years ago. Â It's fine. Better then Domino's in my opinion, but it needs more sauce and another 5 minutes in the oven! Â They don't deliver to me, so I stopped on my way home from work to pick it up.
Friendly people, fast service, I guess that's all you need!
I am not a person who normally writes bad reviews but this took the cake on horrible service . Papa Johns delivered my food an 1.5 after I ordered it. The delivery guy supposedly "came" by earlier and "claimed" that my gate was locked. My gate doesn't have a lock on it. As a matter of fact, its always open. So my food came (1.5 hours later) and it was cold and nasty. Then I called to complain and the manager and his delivery guy insulted my intelligence by implying that I was lying about it. Then to add insult to injury, I asked for my delivery tip back and they refused to credit it back. So I will not EVER EVER EVER order from this location ever again.
Review Source:I'm not from UIC and was just visiting one night, but this Papa John's really is as good as it gets. On the corner of Taylor and Racine, it is in a really convenient location. And the whole order process was just so quick and painless.
I called ahead while I was in the Taxi (Yelped the number, mobile app is very convenient) and was just like I want 2 pizzas. 15 minutes they said. Not sure how long until I actually got there, but right as I did, they literally pulled my pizzas out of the oven. Now you can't get much fresher than that. Great place, and def like Papa John's over the other chains.
I love Papa John's. Â I was so bummed when I lived back in Indiana and the one in my town closed. Â When my friend and I saw the coming soon sign, we got excited.
Yes, its very average fast-food pizza....but I love it. Â
The employees there range from awesome, to subpar, but hey...that's what you get for hiring college kids.
I don't know about everyone else, but I've been waiting for Papa John's to come to our neck of the woods for quite some time...and its finally here! I placed an order online and my delicious pizza was waiting for me 15 minutes later when I went to pick it up (they do deliver but I had to see the place for myself).
It's a franchise so obviously the menu is the same everywhere. However, (and I'm not sure that this is new) they have a point system now for online orders. I love reward programs and I love Papa John's pizza so this is a great combination.
Although this is a change from the authentic (relatively in some cases) Italian restaurants nearby, its a welcomed change.
