I've given up on writing Yelp reviews for awhile now but Phlight deserves some recognition and I seldomly like to give 5 stars. Favorite. Place. Ever.
I was never a huge fan of Spanish tapas until I came here. So far, almost everything I've tried has tasted amazing. I've been here about 6 or 7 times now and on my way to trying everything they have on the menu.
Few items to highlight:
Olives & Almonds - They serve this as soon as you sit down. Great pairing with most of the food and especially the alky. Not your usual carb loaded bread and butter. I love that they continually refill it as I get progressively sloppier aka hungrier after multiple glasses of sangria.
Sangria - Get the pitcher, it's a steal. Not too strong and perfect blend of wine and fruit with ample amount of chunks of fruit.
Pork Belly Tacos - comes with 2 each order and just about my favorite pork belly taco I've eaten in my life so far. Large portion of pork belly and don't forget to save the avocado sauce to pair with other items like the below.
Short Ribs - Melts in your mouth. Seriously. Get the mint rice with this. It's not on the menu but great pairing and I'm not just saying this because I'm Asian. I also like to use some leftover avocado sauce that comes with the pork belly tacos with this. Great combo.
Ahi Tostado - ahi tuna spread over perfectly toasted tortilla. Has a unique flavor different from what is traditionally found in most american restaurants. Might be the tinge of garlic.
Lobster Mashed potatoes - saving the best for last. It melts in your mouth. Seriously. Nothing tastes better than buttery goodness with chunks of lobsters. I always call ahead to make sure they haven't run out before I go. This is a MUST ORDER item.
Above are just a few of my favorite items on the menu. Their salads are good as well so be sure to get some! My personal fav is the arugula salad.
Overall, great place to go. So worth my 30 minute drive to fulfill my spanish tapas cravings. I've been here for dates, group outings, and just getting boozy with the fam. Do make reservations because it does get busy in the evenings especially the weekends. Eat your heart out!
Delicious tapas in a chill and vibey location. MUST HAVE the lobster mashed potatoes, and for drinks some delicious Sangria. Perfect for dates, hang outs, and family get togethers. For those who haven't had before, it's fun because you get to order a whole bunch of different plates, if you skip the alcohol, it's lots of food for a great price, with great service. Definitely a must visit location.
Review Source:*Review for Sunday Brunch Only*
A lot of people don't really know they serve brunch I guess, it's pretty quiet around uptown Whittier anyways, we were originally at Greenleaf Cafe and my friend recommended this as she always comes here on lunch break at least twice a week. It didn't show up on my search for breakfast which is unfortunate because they do serve breakfast and it was good!
Anyways I think they served brunch from 11-3. It's a nice modern place, the service was really good and our waiter was nice. The portions are pretty small, for me they are perfect size, but a guy would maybe have to order 2 dishes and the prices are great and cheap, so it makes sense they are smaller portions, it's Tapas style for dinner, so maybe they keep that same concept for brunch as well, I could see even ordering 2 dishes would fill someone up and still be a great price.
Ordered a mimosa, pomegranate spritzer, and champagne float. They were all pretty good, the champagne float was interesting and yummy!
We got some chips and salsan which also had some pieces of shrimp in it, it was really good, the chips tasted so fresh and were still warm, right amount of spice, couldn't stop eating it! (5 stars)
Red Chilaquiles and Eggs ($8)(5 stars)= So yummmyyyy, eggs were runny and perfect, chips were crispy and soft at the same time and the sauce was awesome! I'd come back for this again, really which they had rice and beans as a side maybe.
Fried Egg & Jamon Sandwich ($9)(4 stars)= This was also good! Loved the jamon on the sandwich mmmm def made the dish what it was!
Huevos Rancheros ($7)(3.5 stars)= This was ok, I felt like there was a lot missing, and it could have been better and more innovative, felt it was too plain & simple, and their should be more to huevos rancheros than a fried tortilla, egg, salsa and green sauce.
I would love to come back here for lunch or even dinner, seems like a great spot!
I cannot say enough good things about Phlight! The only bad thing is that I live far away from it now and can't go as much anymore!
My husband and I always sit at the bar. It's really interesting and fun to watch our fresh food being made right in front of us, while trying all of their beers and wine. (We get quite tipsy every time we go there, whoops!) The bartender (I really wish I could remember her name, I'm horrible at that!) is so so sweet, and she always remembers us when we come in. That is a great quality to have as a bartender IMO. We love the ambiance, from the lighting, to the exposed wooden beams.
The food is always on point. We always start with our usual bacon wrapped dates, but usually try to get different stuff every time. We have NEVER been disappointed! Â Go here please!
I've enjoyed Phlight a number of times now.
I like their atmosphere very much. Wish they had more of a variety during lunch... but I guess it gives them more character to specialize in certain foods.
I had the sandwich (I forgot the name but took a photo of it) and it was delicious. I didn't know there would be chipotle in it so it was definitely too spicy for me lol. I also tried their daily special soup which was broccoli soup... delicious!!!
Came here on a random Tuesday evening, yet it was busy. Hostess asked if we had reservations. We didn't, but they had plenty of space for us at the bar. The place was tastefully decorated, minimalist and classy. Â I had the malbec, empanadas, and the lobster mash. Everything was delish and the service was excellent. Great place for a relaxing dinner. It would also make a good date spot.
Review Source:I don't know where to start :/ I've had a lot of dishes here. I do know, you'll enjoy every bite you take ;)
Lentils are my FAVORITE item on the menu. A crisp tiny legume, with a bit of tang from the balsamic vinegar, nuttiness of the lentil, combined with chunks of bacon is truly something out of this world. Tried making it at home, I won't ever do that again :/
Another must try is the Green Chili. O-M-G it is fan-f*cking-tastic (excuse my language)! I always order it extra spicy, yummy! So it comes with a few corn tortillas and a side of rice. Definitely a must try item!
I've had one bad dish there but that was so long ago that I don't remember what it was. Everything I have tried since has been delicious. Although it is a bit on the higher end of $$ it's totally worth it.
PLEASE END YOUR MEAL WITH THE MEXICAN CHOCOLATE SOUFFLE!!! Tastes just like Abuelita's chocolate :)
This place is great if you're looking for some delicious tapas and sangria. But, in order to have a filling dinner (especially for guys like my dad and boyfriend) you really have to order a lot of dishes, which adds up quickly.
The cheese stuffed dates were phenomenal. I also went crazy for the Chimichurri sauce. To be honest though, the items are kind of hit or miss. There were some I adored, and others that I was very dissatisfied by. The paella, for example, which I was told by everyone that I just HAD to try, was just barely alright.
Overall, this place has a great vibe, and is good for a light meal with some wine. I guess it's just a matter of going in with the right expectations.
Ok lastnight Ordered Chorizo pizza like dish and it was utterly disgusting.. Blocks of heavy salt and chorizo was actually cheese squares not chorizo! Told the waiter to take a taste I insisted, got angry with us, the customer, and was giving us dirty looks and talkin between his teeth.. What bad service and he grunted when the check was brought. Waiter: tall white guy with bold dark glasses, relatively short hair and white/gray beard.. Asshole
Review Source:We got a pitcher of Sangria! Â Boy was it large for 2 people! Â But somehow we managed to finish it! Â =) Â You get this yummy dish of almonds and almonds (complimentary)...Then had 3 different delicious tapas, the empanadas (good but prob wouldn't order again), the bacon wrapped dates (so delish!!), and the John Dory (fish--also delish)! Â I would definitely order the bacon wrapped dates and the john Dory again...and then of course another dish! Â
Just love the feel of this place, nicely decorated and great friendly staff! Â Ask them for advice on what to order, our waitress totally steered us in the right direction! Â Can't wait to go back!
I love Tapas! Makes me wanna go to Spain and eat more Tapas. Love sitting at the bar and chatting with the owner. I even offered to volunteer once! Menu changes every so often.
Favorites are chicken mole, dates, duck tacos, deconstructed pozole.
Their flight of wines is an awesome deal with very generous pours!
One of my favorite restaurants on the planet. Â It's simple really: great food, great service, great prices. Â
I've had dinner here MANY times. Â I ALWAYS order the short rib, it's a must. Â I'm not even a fan of paella, but I almost always order that here as well, it's so good. Â The arugula salad and pacific rim caesar are great. Â If you're drinking wine, which you should since they have a great wine list, the cheese plate is good to pair it with. Â I could go on and on about the desserts and other plates...just go here and try stuff. Â Try the stuff I recommend and you'll be happy.
I almost forgot the $10 corkage fee. Â That's a bargain. Â
I have even had a party here, reserving the "loft" space...and had an AMAZING night there with friends. Â Gotta thank Nikomi for that. Â I have also had the luck to be helped by either Shane or Laura....they are friendly and attentive. Â
One word of caution: make reservations. Â With reviews like mine, they are getting more and more busy....walking in without reservations on weekends is risky.
Went again and tried a few more dishes worth mentioning:
Mashed potatoes with lobster something in it, I don't think the 2 should be mixed, but others at my table liked it. Â Arugula salad, it has a slightly sweet dressing that is good. Â Well flavored. Â Carnitas was good, I should have asked for some tortillas on the side. Â Decomposed Pozole, it was good also. Â We did re-order the pork belly tacos, man are those a winner. Â Oh and the empanada is good, it's well flavored and not doughy.
I would say most of the dishes you'll like, some more than others, but overall, good food here, fun to eat and try the different things, and you'll look forward to ordering your favorite items again.
Almost forgot to mention the French Toast. Â Pretty F###ng good! Â I would think all their desserts are good, they look that way.
I recently discovered this place & I'm a huge fan! My friend works at a wine bar up north and I have been searching for something like that around here. The food is really good & I like how their beer and wine selections change frequently.
The only complaint I have was that my mom ordered the "House Chardonnay" our first time there and when we got the bill, it was a $18 glass of wine! I know it's not that big of a deal, but they should have informed us that the menu is constantly changing and there isn't a standard "house" wine. If we would have known that, we would have reconsidered our order.
Besides that little mishap, I am a fan of Phlight & visit here a couple times a month.
I have been here twice. Once with my girlfriends and once with my boyfriend. I had a great experience each time.
Favorites: sweet potato fries, lamb sliders, empanadas, bacon wrapped dates. All of the sauces and dips they offer are really good. ALSO THE SANGRIA IS AMAZING! It even inspired me to go home and make my own.
The service is pretty good. When I went with my girlfriends we sat at the bar and had a blast talking to the cooks and waiters. When I went with my boyfriend we sat at a table and had very attentive service.
Note: DO NOT split a pitcher of sangria between two people. Â If you do, there may or may not be an incident involving a trash can at Whittier Village Cinemas. Â Just a note.
Tasty tasty tapas!
Phlight where have you been all my life! where! definitely hidden in Whittier...but I kind of want too keep it that way! hehe I mean where can I start...the food here is AMAZING all around and so is the service.
This place is in a very industrial space with high open ceilings and concrete floors. Has an open kitchen so you see the chef's cooking your food...which you could sit at the bar.
This review is based on my first time and I have only tasted about 5% of their menu, they have a vast array of tapas. Definitely try the Lobster Mashed Potatoes...soooo amazing!
Food - Heck 10 Stars
Service -5 Stars
This place is awesome!
I thought I would have a hard time finding an affordable way to eat here. Definitely not the case. There are affordable and higher priced options in the menu.
Place was packed when I went.
Service was quick.
My friend and I shared the bacon wrapped in dates-DELICIOUS
I ordered the baked macaroni & cheese- VERY good
& their Pom Pom? drink -Super Delicious
there was an error & delay with my food-BUT they handled it quick! and lets say they took care of it. I was a happy customer. Definitely going back
We came here on a whim..we sat at the bar, where is pretty warm because the kitchen is right there. You can watched them in action as they create tasty dishes, made to order and you can also find out, which foods are the popular items...the paella was created numerous when we were there ;) Â
The order:
- Arugula Salad -  Not  your typical salad but refreshing. But then again, this is not typical restaurant.
- Lobster mashed potatoes: oh gawd, this was so good! The bowl was too small, they should make it bigger lol
- Serrano jamon wrapped asparagus - was good, not a big fan of aspargus, but these were grilled and was quite good :)
- Â Boquerones (Spanish White anchovies on toast, kinda like a bruschetta): the bf really likes anchovies but I don't...til I tried this dish and I've changed my mind...this dish was really tasty however the garlic aioli was made with parsley, which does not mix well with the bf's allergy :O The chef that prepared the dish, made another without the parsley, very cool that they did that.
And for dessert Mexican chocolate souffle...oh. my. gawd. just the right amount of sweet to melt in my mouth with vanilla ice cream.
They have decent wine list but I went with something called a "Pom Pom", it very yummy! He had a IPA.
Need to go back soon and try the paella, chicken mole, and so much more ....
I was really impressed by this tapas place. Â Had a homey feel to it on a rainy night.
Anybody who knows me knows that I like to sample small plates. Â I can easily make a meal of it. Â This was the primary reason I wanted to try Phlight. Â They did not disappoint.
Their beer selection was good (got a Titan IPA) and they also had a really refreshing bubbly (pom pom, which was champagne with pomegranate juice). Â They also have a very good wine list, which would pair well with the tapas.
Started with an arugula salad. Â It was fresh and hit the spot.
Got the boquerones, which are like a bruschetta with Spanish white anchovies. Â I love anchovies and had to convince my date to try. Â Good anchovies are not the salty, bony, and disgusting tidbits that you remember. Â They did this on crusty rounds along with an aoli and a chimichuri sauce. Â Unfortunately, I cannot do parsley and they didn't say that they did with a chimichuri. Â They were very accommodating and made me another without, and then also made a chimichurri without the parsley. Â Great service here.
We also had the lobster mashed potatoes. Â I have never had it like this and it was.... phenomenal. Â Highly recommend.
The last of our tapas was a Serrano ham wrapped asparagus. Â What can I say, but.. yum.
Finished off with a chocolate souffle with a caramel (I think?) ice cream. Â The flavor was delicate and not overpowering. Â Very good end to the meal.
I'll be back. Â Never spent time in uptown Whittier and enjoyed the visit.
I love coming here. I've brought friends and family to eat here. The servers here are always on top of things. There's this one cook named Shane and he's always making amazing dishes; great cook. Their empanadas, mole, and enchiladas are amazing among all their great food. It just has an overall great experience. As you walk in the door there's someone who greets you with a smile and a hello and the music is always low enough for a good ambiance that doesn't stop you from having a good conversation.
They have a great beer and wine selection and I always see people leaving with those happy tipsy smiles. It's just an amazing place to have a romantic or friends/family dinner at. I recommend it for all those in  Whittier and the surrounding LA and OC area. Check this out if you're reading this review right now, you won't regret it.
Just a heads up they have those typical Spain hours of closing after 2 and not opening back up till dinner time around 5. To me it doesn't cause a problem at all because lunch is normally 11 till 2 and dinner is 5 and after. Smart business move.
Check this place out especially if you love Spanish style food.
If it wasn't for the fact that sodas came in can (translated: no refills)... this place is quite the gem in uptown Whittier!! It's a Tapas bar and the service is exceptional. Â My wife and I never had the opportunity to try tapas and the server was nice enough to walk us thru the process and even recommended that we didn't over order. Â I love honesty and it goes a long ways for me, in this regard the server saved me a good 15 bucks by telling me what I had ordered was enough--amazing!
My favorite dish and a definitely MUST have are the bacon wrapped dates! Â What better way to start off your date than w/ DATES! You have my permission to use this joke :)
The fusion of the savory bacon wrapped around the sweet caramelized date really opens up your palate and is a definitely recommendation for each and every trip you make to Phlight.
Environment is very minimalistic and open... feels very Santa Monica-ish--but w/o the Santa Monica attitude.
I recommend ordering maybe 3-4 dishes max as a party of two--you can always order more later. Â Enjoy your time here and definitely take your time and pair your meal up w/ a nice glass of wine, you won't regret your trip to Phlight.
I really love how this place has evolved. I used to think they were a little too boujie for their own good when they were starting out. I always felt the plates weren't cohesive or made well, but looked fancy, so I stopped coming. They've definitely toned that down over the last five to six years or so and seem to really be focusing on serving straight up tasty food. Philght offers a wide range of awesome tapas plates from creative to classic...all made with quality ingredients and executed really well.
The place was busy, but it was easy to grab a seat for a party of six on a Monday night. We ordered an ungodly amount of food, but standouts include:
Chile Verde - tender, slow cooked, flavorful pork chunks in a lovely green salsa. This dish comes with spanish rice and corn tortillas and I love it.
Ground Beef Pickle Tacos - served with shredded cheddar, sliced pickles, and lots of yummy seasoned beef; crispy and simple and perfect. These are served with a side of 'Pedro's sauce.' I was relieved to learn this merely referred to a tasty, spicy, red salsa - not anything that came from Pedro's penish.
Baked Iberian Crepes - These turned out to be nothing like what I expected, and I wasn't even mad. They were stuffed with mushrooms and cheese, folded into little pouches, and pan fried. The port wine sauce was incredible and added a little sweetness  to the savory crepe.
Lomo Embuchado - Cured pork, Spanish goat cheese, and an olive tapenade on a slightly sweet piece of toast. Super simple and probably the best little bite of the evening.
Beef Empanadas - I think these had beef and veggies inside and a brown gravy like sauce poured on top of two huge empanadas. These are semi spicy and the beef is juicy. They impressed me!
Mothereffin FRENCH TOAST! - had we not been so stuffed I would have inhaled that entire serving. One bite wasn't enough. Let's go back!
We ordered about 10 more plates which included 4 desserts. Everything that hit our table kept outshining my expectations on site. Really though, nothing tastes bad here. We got all the good shit this time, too...except the Lobster Mashed Potatoes; tasted fishy and had an unpleasant watery consistency - no bueno. The Sangria is refreshing and they have an extensive beer and wine list; something for everyone :] This place is a decent choice for one on one date situations, but better for large groups since sharing is highly encouraged and you get to eat more good stuff!
Ps. This place transforms into a Oaxacan lunch spot during the day! I look forward to my next visit.
Kate, we have to go baaack...! <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FONFoEq&s=699b1bec3da23a0588f5a2987411103e2770d1291cd65631f1bb21c30fa46db8" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://bit.ly/ONFoEq</a>
WOW.
Ended up going here because Vintage Cafe across the street was closed. I've been here in the past, but didn't really remember the experience, but I'm sooo glad we came back.
Since it's tapas style, the group and I all shared the following:
Spicy Adobo Chicken Wings: They had a good kick to them. Came in a serving of five.
Ground Beef and Pickle Tacos: These were delicious. They came in a set of four. The shell was super crispy and the pickles peaked out of each one. Every bite had a delicious meat/pickle taste with it. Not too greasy either, which is a huge plus!
Baked Macaroni and Cheese: Good- I think it had chunks of ham and sausage in them. The cheese was a nice coat around the noodles.
Lobster Mashed Potatoes: A little too fishy for me.
Baked Iberian Crepes: I really liked this. Not sure what the sweet sauce on the plate was, but it complimented them quite well. To be honest, I'm not really sure what was in them either. It might have been potatoes. Really good though.
Bacon Wrapped Dates: I could have just had plates and plates of these all night long. They were incredible. The date was nice and sweet and the bacon was nice and crispy on the outside. When you took a bite, you got the smokey and savory mix that made you want more.
Lamb Burger Sliders: Came in a portion of two. Not gamey and they had arugula and bleu cheese on them. I usually am not a fan of bleu cheese- but it was pretty delicious.
Green Chile: The pork was tender and the green chiles were the perfect spiciness- they weren't overbearingly hot and had great flavor.
We shared the Mexican Souffle, French Toast, Fried Bananas and Flan for dessert. The souffle was good, but the French Toast-- OMG. It was delicious, served with creme fraiche. I hate cinnamon, but the hints of the spice didn't bother me as I took bite after bite of this dessert. It was like bread pudding. I don't know how else to describe it, but it was one of the best desserts I've ever had. I didn't try the flan, not a huge fan of it- but the bananas were tasty as well.
They have a ton of beer/wine to choose from and they even have some selections courtesy of Noble Ale Works. I unfortunately didn't want to drink a 700ml bottle by myself at that point, so I went with the Paulaner Hefeweizen. Light, crisp and a perfect way to wash down an awesome meal!
I'm already planning my next visit. It's not a cheap meal, but it's a good one. I don't recommend if you're in a hurry- this is a sit back and chat sort of dinner spot. The service is great and you'll enjoy the ambiance while looking out into old Uptown Whittier. They also have a Oaxacan lunch they do, have to try that sometime.
I love this place!!!
They have a great wine and beer selection and their food is amazing.
Almost everything on their menu is good, but here is what we order every time.
Sweet Potato Fries
Pacific Rimmed Caesar Salad
their soup of the day (almost never disappoints)
Pork Belly Tacos (my husband's fave)
John Dory
Spanish French Toast
Their specials are always really good too.
If you come on a Friday or Saturday evening, definitely make reservations.
Came here for quality time with one of my besties. Upon entering it was nice. The decor is modern and dim lit.
We ordered:
1) Paella - the seafood was unseasoned but the rice and chorizo were good.
2) Bacon-wrapped dates- fuck yes. Make sure you get these!
3) Pork belly tacos- sensational! That green salsa is worth every penny!
4) Empanadas- good and flaky but beef was a little dry.
The sangria was great as well. Would I recommend this spot? Sure. Whittier needed a place like this.
