Had dinner with my wife and 2 couples on Thursday evening. Â I haven't been a fan of the decor at Blue or Red, seemed cheap. Â This place is totally different. Â Every detail is well done. Â Feels like high end restaurants in California and very similar to a place in Kierland Commons in Scottsdale. Â Its gorgeous. Â
For a new place, the servers already seem like they've got it down. Â The hostesses will get better over time, I'm sure.
Had a selection of Oysters (3 were free because we signed up to get their emails). Â Fresh, cold and a great selection of condiments to compliment.
All the fish dishes were well liked by our group, especially the trout. Â Done perfectly with an excellent side of grits. Â
Pretty reasonable prices and a perfect atmosphere. Â
Definitely will be back.
I'd recommend sitting in one of the booths under the ship framing. You've been warned though, if you're anything like me you'll have The Mariner's Revenge Song stuck in your head for hours afterwards.
Starting off at the tail end of HH, we had a round of oysters (miyagi, blue points and wawenauks). Oysters are one of my relatively unexplored food frontiers, but I could see myself becoming educated pretty quickly here.
Spiked lemonade cocktails were playful with paper straws, and the oyster shooters were fun (and a good deal at $3 on HH)... vodka, hot sauce, oysters... what's not to love?
My favorite item was definitely the white fish rillette, served on a board with some assembly required.
And service was generally pretty amazing. Multiple people running food, plenty of check-ins from our server (it was one of those meals where we couldn't stop ordering things).
But ultimately, I don't think I'll find myself raving about the food to anyone so I don't think I can pull the trigger on a full 5-stars.
Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to a return trip at some point, but probably would go for a different entree because ultimately the lobster roll was a bit of a letdown and the fries were just... well, fries.
That part was just okay, but everything else was great. Plank is a very welcome addition to the Omaha restaurant scene.
For starters I had the seasonal crab claw cocktail with creole mustard sauce and it was delicious. The entree I chose was the Cedar Plank Scottish Salmon. The sauce on the salmon was tasty, I also enjoyed the side salad and saffron couscous. My complaint is that a part of the salmon was undercooked. Â Overall it was an enjoyable lunch, despite being a Saturday it was not crowded when I went and the staff was friendly. Hopefully next time I have a better experience. I would like to try the lobster roll.
Review Source:First time at Plank last night. Had a terrific evening. It started as we were waiting for the rest of our party to join us -- the guys at the oyster bar/station were happy to answer questions and even gave us a sample of a couple to help illustrate the variations between coasts. It was totally unexpected and much appreciated, and it led to us ordering 6 on the half shell to share. It was onward and upward from there. Informed servers made for a great meal.
Review Source:Plank has a nice feel (although it is very loud--all hard materials in the design,) we dined at the bar, that was cool. Barstools were metal, they won't be fun in the winter. Â The bartender only gave us a fork for dinner, since when does a knife not come with a placesettng? Â The restroom needed attention, why is there no toilet paper in a stall on a Saturday evening? Â Trout was decent, but my friends mashed potatoes looked a bit too thin.
First impressions can be lasting, but I will give you one more try. Â Raise the Bar!
OK, we went back six days later on a Friday night.
Our waitress from last weekend recognized us on sight and stopped by to say hi, as friendly and engaging as a week ago.
The wine list is a bit modest, so we had Diving Rod cabernet sauvignon again, even knowing it's top heavy at $38.
We opened with the Potato Crusted Calamari and devoured it. Â Crispy like you would expect, sure, but the crunch is reminiscent of french fries. Â Good french fries. Â You have your choice of two dipping sauces; the garlic citrus aioli didn't present garlic as much as it did a sense of mayonnaise. Â Not objectionable, but we would've preferred a stronger garlic presence. Â On the other hand, you could eat the smoked tomato basil sauce with a spoon. Â I know because we did, so that we didn't miss a drop. Â Fantastic! Â The dish also comes with fried zucchini chips dipped in the same batter. Â Great.
We also shared an order of the Smokehouse Salmon Crustini. Â I'm a sucker for any dish that includes the word 'crustini', but even so we polished this off instantly. Â A hint of smokiness, a little snap from capers, a really tasty tarragon creme fraiche, and slices of boiled egg on a thin slice of crusty bread. Â This one's a keeper.
3-3 on appetizers.
I had the scallops and she had them again. Â That's something. Â This time, the kale was crunchy and perfect. Â Makes one wonder if last time the preparation was just a bit off, or did someone hear what we said?
Our guests each had the Cedar Plank Scottish Salmon and loved it. Â They shared it with us and we did, too. Â Comes with thin slices of fennel, which adds a great flavor complement in this dish and will probably be even better when it's in season locally. Â Served over creamy saffron couscous with a really great maple glaze and topped with fresh arugula. Â Couldn't taste the saffron, but I only had a bite. Â We'll try this one for ourselves.
Like last week, this Friday night was very busy in the Old Market and Plank was full up--inside and out--as we left our 3-hour visit. Â This is a great place to eat, in a great spot to enjoy the modest downtown city life Omaha has to offer. Â On this warm spring evening, it could not have been more enjoyable.
This place is off to a great start and we will return. Â Next time: salads.
I have yet to actually eat here ,see my husband spent all last week putting together reservations for my birthday with a group of friends . We where given the party room and every thing. We where contacted by the manager this morning to tell us they decided to be closed today ( my actual birthday) . So now we have to contact everyone and figure out a new plan. Happy Birthday to me! And no if I wanted to go to your sister restaurant Blue we would have made reservations there. Someday may be we will try to make an effort to reserve a table again, but I'm unimpressed and in no rush seeing as we haven't even been through the door yet.
Review Source:I think folks have pretty much covered it at this point.
Atmosphere is great. BBQ oysters are amazing. Fried oysters and calamari aren't spectacular and were a bit over greasy. Lemon asparagus were uber fresh and cooked to perfection. Bread pudding was a-okay (disclaimer - I'm a bread pudding snob). Service was excellent.
My only hesitation in giving the full 5-stars...if you're food sensitive (which I'm normally not, but apparently on this particular occasion I was, as was my dining companion), it can wreck havoc on your system for about 12 hours. A bit of over-share mayhaps, but it had to be said...so make good choices when dining at Plank and you'll be a-okay.
Oyster bar. Limited menu, especially for lunch, but a nice place. A little on the expensive side but it costs big money to get fresh seafood 1000 miles from the ocean. Chicken sausage gumbo had great flavor but lacked sausage (none in bowl), and chicken (couple of shreds). I will come back for the oyster bar when they stop charging $2.00 per bite (swallow?) and they have a happy hour special.
Review Source:Plank has excellent ambience and service. Sat at the bar to dine. The striking bartender was pleasant and professional. I ordered the blackened catfish and dirty rice. I usually cover my food with hot sauce to add flavor, but in this instance I added nothing as the taste of the food was perfection already. The Anchor Steam beer on tap was tasty and topped off a most impressive luncheon dining experience.
I thought the prices and servings were in line with an upscale dining establishment, and the place seemed to run smoothly. Plank Seafood and Provisions will see me coming back often, hungry for more.
What a pleasant surprise to be walking downtown from my downtown pad to another restaurant to see that Plank was open to the public last night! We stopped in grabbed a high top by the bar. We LOVED the interior atmosphere of the decor- great job! Great combination of shiny metal, soft wood planks, and sleek granite. Light fixtures are stylish and added the perfect light amount. ok- now time for the food! We ordered a bottle of the Grayson Chardonney, and intensly watched our waitress successfully open our bottle with a corkscrew - without setting on the table (or floor, as I do at home!) I dont recall her name or I would give her a shout-out! We started with the grilled artichokes-we thought they were artichoke hearts- not our favorites (but they were cooked to perfection and we still devoured them!), but there were so many other apps to order, we plan on ordering many throughout the summer. I ordered the trout and the BF ordered the salmon. I was reluctant to share any of my trout, b/c it was SO good. Cooked just right, but warning, it does have the skin on, if you are freaked out about that. I loved it! And what was that deliciousness on top, who cares, I was having a mouth-gasm. I did give a shout-out to the chef for the grits, being from the south, I am a grit snob. They arent usually served in this form, but Plank got it right! A moist patty of flavor and spice. I once again did not want to share! I thought the salmon was cooked perfectly, but still think the trout was better :) We split a cup of the lobster bisque soup- slam dunk, again. Chunks of lobster, and slice of grilled bread accompanied the soup, making it one of the better ones in town! I would like to say we stopped there, but another waiter kept walking by with desserts, taunting us obviously. We ordered the key lime panna cotta. I would say this bomb of goodness was a key lime pie, a cheesecake and a mousse combined into one. I rarely go to restaurants the first week, much less the first day - but this was the best decision I have made all week. They told us they will start happy hour specials next week- yes, please!
Review Source:I went here expecting to be let down since these are the same owners as Blatt but I was pleasantly surprised. This place reminds me of Kansas City - the interior looks great.
Started with a cocktail and I gotta say they make a great Old Fashioned here. Next up was the wedge salad and it was THE BEST wedge salad I have ever had. For my entree I ordered oysters rockefeller off the app menu and they were outstanding. The bacon they use in the salad and the rockefeller is beyond great. My gf ordered a burger and it was mediocre. I realize this is a seafood restaurant but if you are going to put a burger on your menu please do it right and put some effort in it.
Even after the let down of the burger I still feel this is a five star place.
