Fab hot dog here today. I had the polish dog with peppers and french fries, and an eclaire cake dessert. WOW good hotdog...as usual with Portillos.

I'm addicted to Portillo's chopped salad - sooooo good! My sister-in-law and another friend had both recommended it, but I wasn't thrilled at the idea of bacon in my salad. But oh my. Love. And this Portillo's is good about cooking the bacon thoroughly. Their drive-thru line also isn't usually ungodly long the way it is at many other locations.

If you want to eat inside, don't go during lunch hour on a weekday. It's packed, as expected.

Not as busy as the location in Batavia, so it's a much quicker drive thru!

I haven't had a bad experience at Portillo's. Fast service, even when the line at the drive-thru is dauntingly long.

Italian beef - 4 stars. Tastes great, but when I had ordered from this location most recently (March '13), it had a lot less beef than I remembered. I remembered having a beef at the Portillo's in Rolling Meadows where they had double the meat.

Maxwell Street Polish - 5 stars. Delicious! Nice snap. Soft bun.

Grilled tuna sandwich - 4 stars. Healthier alternative to their Italian beef. I never order salads at an eatery because I can just make one at home in lickety-split.

Chicago-style hotdog - 5 stars. Perfect how it is.

I've also tried the beef-n-cheddar croissant (the croissant is a bit sweet), breaded halibut sandwich, and chili-cheese hotdog. All were good to try, but they didn't become repeat buys.

    I don't like hot dogs!

I do however love the chili cheese dog here. Fat girl heaven. Can I also get a side of onion rings and ranch? Yes? Oh dear.

    Hhhmmm... Dessert.... CHOCOLATE CAKE SHAKE??!!

    I die!

We had the party room at this location to gather family to celebrate our mom's 90th birthday.  The room was great and the service was even better.  We had one employee (I believe his name was Carlos) who kept everything stocked; food, drinks, plates.  He even rescued a bunch of balloons that my granddaughter untied and floated to the ceiling.  The food was wonderful as always.  Thanks, Portillo's!

My updated review is for the following (not food quality related) - just to let people know:

As of JULY 21, 2012 - HOTDOG PRICES (and probably other prices) have went UP:

** 3 hot dogs, including tax = $8.07.  Kinda pricey....

    Just take note...

No better spot in Chicago or anywhere for an Italian beef or hotdog.

And yea, their dogs, IB's, burgers and salads are great but lest not forget about their....

Go here often for lunch. Compared with other locations they have people are great and they are always busy. Other day credit card machines were down and staff handled lunch crowd very smoothly.

The folks that live in this area told me about this place that makes bad ass hot dogs, ribs, hamburgers and lots more. That Portillo's is the place to eat at. So I went and had the Jumbo hot dog and double burger. Yes they were correct, Wow is all I can say. Very good food and a cool place to dine at. I would recommend this place to anyone who travels in this area to dine here. The staff is very nice and the coca cola is out of this world. Very clean restaurant and bathrooms.

Portillo's is fantastic and each time I go back to Chicagoland I always stop by one and lucky for me they are all over the place in Illinois!  The following items are can't miss, spectacular, total ownage choices for meal greatness.

-Italian Beef (Ask for it with plenty of juice and add hot peppers and you are in for a treat)
-Chicago Style Hot Dog (Great dog and use this in place of fries to complement your Italian Beef)
-Chocolate Cake Shake (WOW, this thing is soooo good and is a great desert)
-Chopped Salad (This is not ordinary salad, this thing has some real flavor and is quite hearty)

    Overall:
    Chicagoland Staple
Get the Italian Beef Dipped and with Hot Peppers

Having heard so much about Portillo's, I had to try it out when I visited Illinois.  I definitely was not disappointed with my dog, but when weighed against others I tried during that week, I can't say that it blew away the competition.

They are packed at lunch, so they are definitely doing something right.

Everything I've had here is good, from the perfectly crunchy/salty fries, to the best beef sandwiches at any establishment, to the chopped salad that's always fresh and delicious. Not a complaint.

Finally dined in at the infamous Portillo's. Had picked some ribs up once before, but never took the time to dine in. Typical Midwestern dine in experience with a washboard hanging on the wall along with some steel tools and the other midwestern chain decor. It reminded me a little of a Famous Dave's.

I really wanted an Italian Beef. Kind of a let down. I ordered mozzarella and hot peppers. Either they forgot the cheese for .50 cents extra or their idea of cheese is throwing on two shreds of mozzarella.

While I like the fact that it was drenched in juice, it just didn't satisfy my hankering for an Italian Beef at all. For all the praise and accolades this place gets, I just didn't experience anything that amazing or mind blowing.

The fries were pretty good. Like that they carry the krinkle cuts and that they were hot!

Prices are reasonable. Food is ok, but nothing I will be rushing back for.

Portillo's is the best. When I go to a restaurant, I usually know what I want before I get there. Portillo's has so many great items that it's hard to choose. Their cheese burger and polish are what I usually end up getting. Everything from their salads to their chocolate cake are fantastic.

Amazing!  The beef sandwich with hot peppers was perhaps the best $5 ever spent. Ever.

Food quality and flavor, staff friendliness and restaurant cleanliness were all top notch.

Been there twice now in the past couple of weeks and cannot wait to get back.

    Salads.....can I just say terrible.....

Overall, Portillo's needs to change and attract a salad lover who loves meat and those who are vegetarian.  Why is iceberg considered normal lettuce?  why not ask romaine, spinach?  No matter what I have tried four salads at this location and they were all dissappointing.  Chuncks of iceberg is not a salad lovers favorite.  Each salad probably has more calories in the dressing which they don't even ask for your choice.  They choose our calories for us.  If you order the southwest salad, you never get enought black beans to be a protein base and the chicken are pieces not the a good size strip you would expect from Portillos.  Then the chop salad is so chunky with large pieces just thrown in with iceberg lettuce again.  Why pasta in a salad?  How about a choice of pasta or not?  How about a vinegarette choice for all salads?  How about extra proteins? like black beans, chicken, beef or pork? How about taking care of the salad like it is special meal instead of throwing it together and expecting us to eat what the counter threw together because they were lazy or don't care? spinach salads are a staple now what happen to gluten free or sugar less?  Salad dressings should not be sugared and then we should have a choice?

If you have to order a salad, don't!!!!   Just order the broiled chicken sandwich without mayo, add honey mustard with the lettuce and nice tomato then you have the protein and veggie fix.  Otherwise, this location and other Portillo's chooses your calories for you and forget special care or attention to any salad!  It's a portillo thing!!!

Portillo's used to be my favorite restaurant when I was a kid, but since becoming a vegetarian it has lost some of the appeal (I loved the hot dogs).  I was upset with them when they re-did the Barnelli's menu a couple years ago and removed one of the only vegetarian salad options (they still have a garden salad but it's not anything special), and since I don't eat fish either there aren't a lot of choices left.  They have a grilled veggie sandwich that is pretty good but I don't crave it or anything.  So I can't give it 5 stars anymore, but I still like to go there once in a while for the cake shake and fries (warning to strict vegetarians/vegans - last I heard they cooked the fries in beef tallow).  It's still a really fun place and everyone I know loves Portillo's so I'll give it 4 stars.  If you DO like hotdogs you'll LOVE this place :)

Another plus is that they're almost always very fast and very accurate with your order.  When I was younger the nearest Portillo's was in Naperville and it was always perfect!  I've had a couple problems at the Batavia and St. Charles locations but I think in terms of service it's still at least ten times better than any other fast food chain.

OMG! We love this place. We unfortunately go to a lot of drive thrus in our busy days and this place is top notch. We have been here hundreds of times and I think the most they have ever messed up our order was to forget to give us a straw once. They really have the employees trained nicely unlike some big corporate fast food restaurants.
We can never move out of IL until Portillo's started moving into other states.
There is such a big variety of items to choose from. The salads are good and char broiled chix is so yummy you don't miss the breading. Beef anfd cheedar croissants are so good and the Italian beef does not compare with any others. YUMM YUMMM

So many people rave about Portillos, and as a kid I used to aswell. Not anymore though....

Where is the celery salt? Stingy on the mustard. Their Chicago dogs, although steamed, are not always hot enough. Cheese sauce for cheese fries is bland. The chopped salad is decent but their standard trademark fair leaves much to be desired. Looking for a hotdog in the tri-cities? Check out the cart in the Industrial Park in Batavia.... other than that you could be SOL for the area.

My review of Portillo's is for this location only.

Portillo's food is great! The seating and service in this location leaves much to be desired. There are too many tables crammed into the space, they need to take about 1/4 of them out.

The service on the salad side is awful. Sometimes you order and in moments your salad is ready while others who ordered 10 minutes before you are still waiting. Just hope you're not in the latter crowd. They just don't have their act together.

I used to work down the street from this location and while it was convenient I found the Glendale Heights location had much better service.

I'm not usually a huge chain person, but I love Portillo's.  They are known for Hot Dogs, Italian Beef and Burgers, but have many healthier options as well.  If its a Barnelli's as well as Portillo's than there are Pizza's. The salads are excellent as well as their grilled chicken and Grilled Tuna.  With Portillo's you always get quality whether you want a guilty pleasure or something more healthy.  Also if you want a little something to complement your meal the smoothies are very good as well.

You gotta love Portillo's! This restaurant's design theme is "30's Prohibition".

Their Italian beef is awesome! I have them add cheddar cheese for even more flavor. The Beef-N-Cheddar Croissant comes on a huge croissant almost as big as the Italian Beef sandwich itself. So if you're looking for a softer bread, try the croissant.

They also have a Barnelli's side to the restaurant where you can order pastas and salads. I don't like the bacon they put in some of their salads because it is too chewy (fatty). Otherwise, everything else is good.

Weekday lunchtime is always busy, but you can still find a table to eat at. The parking lot is generally packed, so if you can't find a close parking space, you can park in the Target parking lot and walk over. The drive-thru line is usually VERY long and I've seen order-takers come outside to pre-write orders for customers waiting in the drive-thru.

Everyone swears by their chocolate cake. Their strawberry shortcake is good, but nothing special.
