Can I mark no stars for Service. I’ve never been so disrespected in my life at a restaurant or any other business and last night I was by the owner (the older guy) and by his son (the younger guy with curly hair). They always have attitude, mainly the owner. The younger man at least says “sweetie†as he gives attitude so women. I’ve witnessed it, I’ve read reviews of people have been treated by them and I’ve heard about the owners having a bad attitude and I’ve experienced it myself. But I noticed last night that my husband or my guy friends have only been given attitude one time when they tried to split their check but besides that they have treated me as a young lady and my girl friends like crap. Last night I was trying to make an big order for carry out (8 of hot wings and 8 of hot wingers which are deliscius by the way) and the owner over the phone indicated they never do that and hung up on me. I called back to speak to a manager and he said “no manager here you’re talking to the owner what do you want?†I told him to please not hang up on me and he said he didn’t care and that my request didn’t make sense and was stupid and once again hung up on me. I called back and I told him that he was giving me attitude and disrespecting me for no reason because I was just simply trying to make my order and I broke down, very detailed, what my order was and I added saying that we all love their hot wings and hot fingers so he then said that he understood and told me to call in to order at 5pm if I wanted them ready by 5:45pm. I called at 5pm and his son answers and tells me I have to go in and make the order and pay first. Ok, I had no problem with that whatsoever, I just wanted to provide this food for my husband’s small bday party. I go in and as I’m making my order a lady wrote it down and he walked up to her turned his back to me and whispered something to her and she said ok walked away and then came back and told him the total and he said ok good. I gave him my debit card and he asked for my ID so I give it to him he looks at it, places it on the counter, runs my card and my card is declined saying my chip was not working. I told him I had just bought something right before going there and it had worked no problem. He took a deep breath, looked at the lady next to him and ran the card again. My card was declined and he threw my card on the counter and told the lady to cancel my order and teared apart and told my bye and ignored me. So get a text message from my bank asking me to approve it if I was making the transaction because of high risk of fraud in the restaurant and in the area. I approve and they tell me to wait 3 minutes until the block is lifted. I go back him and I tell him what happened and he called his lady worker by her name and yells out “that lady is here againâ€. I kept ignoring his attitude because I just wanted to order and I shouldn’t have but anyway, he ran my card and it worked and walked away. Because I didn’t want to see them again I asked 2 guy friends that were going to the party to pick up the order on the way. They told me that when they got there the guy was fine with them and asked them so it’s her husband’s party and they said and he was all cool with them. So this made me realize I think the owners have a hard time with women and treating them with respect. I don’t care if that’s acceptable in their culture but they don’t know me and they shouldn’t be disrespecting me or any other woman costumer in that way. They just have HORRIBLE COSTUMER SERVICE SKILLS, they should just run the restaurant and stay away from costumers! I told my husband last night you can keep going there but I’m not. I’m done with them.

The Purple Steer, not surprisingly, is decorated in purple with gray and dark blue accents. Â It uses neon lights for signs like "dessert" and for accent lighting. Â They have a nice lunch menu with special prices. Â I chose the basket with BBQ Rib Tips, which comes with a cup of soup and French Fries. Â The soup was lentil with carrots in it. Â Everything came hot. Â I wanted water with a lemon in it. Â It came without lemon. Â I was given a bread basket with no butter. Â After trying to catch the server's eye, I gave up and went over to an empty table and got the bowl with the butter in individual packets. Â Service was slow even though the restaurant was not full. Â My server was fastest when I asked for the check. Â Rib Tips were tasty although a bit tough. Â The portion was more than enough, in fact two could split it for lunch. Â Rib Tips with cup of soup and French Fries was $5.99 without drink, tax, or tip.
Review Source:All my friends ever spoke about was Psteers Hot chicken fingers on drunken nights. I went for lunch (sober) ordered the hot chicken fingers, I liked that they were completely covered in the sauce (I hate it when there's hardly any sauce) but they also weren't drenched. They weren't stingy with the food and served plenty of fries along with more than I could eat hot chicken fingers.
The service was friendly and fast, the place does look a little old maybe a little bit of remodeling would help.
The highschool me would have given this place 5 stars. The me "now" is being nice by giving it two.
Sure, the underage me LOVED this place. Open 24 hours, cheap food, and the "it" place to be after house parties, homecomings, talent shows, and late night bonfires. I could definitely say I have a ton of memories hanging out at this place!
But now, this place is just a big world of NO for me. I'm smart enough to know that if a restaurant's bathroom is wreck, the kitchen is probably no better. I'm smart enough to know that they switch the menus at night to ones that show higher prices (when you're drunk you don't notice these kind of things). And I'm also smart enough to know that are tons of better late-night options out there than this place. I still don't get why most of my friends enjoy coming here; if you don't live in Whiting, its really out of your way AND the lighting in there is not cute! Seeing everyone in their drunken stupor and smeared-eyeliner-from-the-club will sober you up faster than the food! lol.
Got the late night munchies, Yelpers? Skip this place! If anything, you'd be better off with sliders from White Castle. You've been warned, yo!
So this review isn't so much about the quality of food, or even about the quality of the establishment, but I wager that a fair amount of Yelpers will be familiar with the cozy sentiments and memories I have for this place.
I spent hours upon hours every weekend throughout high school packed into corner booths with my friends after a marathon hang out session. Â The perfect cap to the night was some hot chicken fingers and a chocolate shake. Â 24-hour Greek Diners are my favorite hang outs, and there are plenty of them with higher quality food and better surroundings, but this one holds a special place in my heart and always will.
This place is soooooooooooooo gross!!! They need to clean it up, rebuild!
I go there occasionally after work. The food is not bad tasting, but I can not imagine what the kitchen looks like. After stepping foot into their restrooms!!!
I'll probably still go back. But for those of you that want a nice place to eat....go to Janell's a few miles down the road!!
I HATE this place! I've only been here three times and each time have had an awful experience:
1st time I was with a group of about 8 other people(mostly African American) and we were hungry. After sitting down for about 10 minutes or so we noticed a police officer came in and spoke to the manager. The cop sat down and stared directly at us the whole time like he was waiting for something to happen. Everyone felt uncomfortable so we left and went to White Castles instead.
2nd time I went here the night before my birthday with my best friend. She ordered a skillet and told them no onions(I think) and what do you know, they put onions in it. I also ordered breakfast(since that's one meal that's hard to mess up) and my pancakes were burnt. Because we've both been waitresses before we didn't bother to send the stuff back.
Then my 3rd time(which was about a week ago) I had a horrible time again. First of all our food comes and there's mushrooms on my boyfriends burger when he specificially asked for no mushrooms. Then as we're sitting there eatting I see my boyfriend looking at something next to our booth(at eye level). I look and see it's a bug. I almost jumped out of the booth, no joke. I asked him if it was roach but he said no. I don't know if he was just saying that because he knows how I'd act or what. We ended up leaving shortly after. If we had not had our food when we saw the bug we would've been outta there immediately!
My suggestion: if you want good food from a 24 hour spot hit Round the Clock instead...it's a lot cleaner, better portion sizes, and cheaper
This is my place to go after hiting the clubs, bars and concerts; plus one my boys lives near this place. This restaurant is awesome because its open 24hrs, its inexpensive, the bus boys are cool and overall the food is really good. I highly recommend The Melting Pot (breakfast), Chicken Finger and The Mozzarella Sticks(appetisers).
Review Source:I love this place. Its open 24hrs so yup. Chicken fingers are good. Ranch dip great. The food is cheap, about $10 per person. Portions are huge. Breakfast, lunch, dinner. all great. This is our go2 spot after coming bk from the clubs at 2 or 3 am. :) There are free refills and you won't run low on coffee. The bus boys are great. Yup grat place.
Review Source:1 star or 5 stars? Â I couldn't decide so I threw down three.
The Steer is a majestical beast, yet highly flawed. Â At first glance it looks like the menu is nothing special. Â Take a closer look my friend, this menu is hilarious:
Jewish Skillet? Â Does Swiss Cheese make something Jewish? Â A New Orleans Burger-Croissant? What the hell is that? Â Sour Cream Crepe? Â Fran-fucking-Cheesie? Â Bwhet? Â
The food is bad but the place itself is amazing. Â Great looking menu, trusty waitstaff and top-notch graffiti that RULES.
I don't know why they call it the Purple Steer as nothing in there seems to be purple. The booths and seats are the typical aqua blue that you find in most diners and the waitresses all wear those royal blue polos that make you think that you are at Jewel or Best Buy. Â Oh well, I'm pretty sure that the drunks who come in after the 2 am bars close don't really care about the color scheme.
It is a decent place to stop by after a hot or not so hot day at the riverboat casinoes, much cheaper than the onsite restaurants and just as tasty. Â We stopped in last Sunday and I had the Tom Turkey dinner because I had a craving for Thanksgiving (ha) and Gregula had the Whitefish which was OK, but I am not a fan of fish so it wouldn't have been my favorite anyway. Â We both had the bowl of Minestrone soup which was delicious and there is only one size - a tub sized bowl. Â Good thing we liked it because there was a LOT.
Bathrooms are meh, but they do have that awesome X-Celerator hand dryer which makes your hands look like the skin is being blown off ;).
Ah yes...Purple. Â It used to be the place to grab a late night bite when on your way home. Â Now we would rather just go home. Â The prices have increased and they don't offer free refills?! Come on?! Â And has anyone noticed that the glasses are smaller now?
But, the dressings, beef delight  and the melting pot are still great. The ranch dressing is out out of this world. They need to package it and sell it oversees. They would make a killing.  Tip: ask for a side of ranch with your fries and dip away. Â
Be careful if you have a sensitive stomach. Sometimes the meat in the sandwiches are really greasy. Â
I want to give it 3 stars but I'll give it 4 because of all those late night memories.."sigh".."tear"..
I once judged this place by one or two brief visits, and made up my mind that I hated it with a passion. Why? Well, I just do that sometimes..actually often. I decide that a place feels like home or that it feels uncomfortable and awkward. Well, I felt for awhile that this place was the second type of place, and friends that liked it thought I was strange.
About six years ago though, I was surprised to find myself changing my mind about the place. It quickly became one of the top hangouts for my friends and I. The main reason I see now was this really funny lesbian waitress that we came there just to see and chat with. She no longer works there and I now rarely go there. I don't hate it once again, but I'm not that fond of it either.
You can't get  free refills on pop for one thing, but at the other 24 hour places in the area  they are free. I use to work across the street from there though, and they are real good with take-out. They have a handful of pretty tasty dishes, but almost not worth the money. I definately have noticed a big price hike recently compared to when I first started hanging out there with my friends. The "Hot Turkey Sandwich"(Open Faced Turkey) is good.
Most of the waitresses are not friendly at all, even less than "The Steer", which is another reason I stopped going there. Only the few waitresses they've had in my age range are actually good at night at least. I think the morning staff is good.
