Sometimes dining out for us can be an ordeal of one sort or another. We could go very local, but then we run into people we know who either own the business where we would eat or the patrons are people we see often. Sometimes I prefer to be anti-social and anonymous and instead focus my energies on my favorite dining companion, The L.

With this in mind and a suggestion from a friend, K., we booked a table via the yelp app/open table reservation system for The Quiet Man Public House with hopes of a couple of pints of Guinness and some tasty fish & chips, The L.'s favorite when done well. After finding some easily available street parking we headed in. I had expected nothing but and was happily surprised. The decor was lovely but the Bar, where one enters, was fab with LED lighting changing colors cyclically and reflecting off the mirrors imparting the bar area with a non-pubby feel. Felt more loungey. Loved its cheeriness.

We were offered a table in the way back near the kitchen which was not acceptable. They were not that crowded and we did make a res, and one through yelp, so we were a little surprised they would have chosen that undesirable location for us. We gently pointed out the error of their ways ("No one puts Baby in the corner") and were offered a table in the front which was much better and gave us the views of other patrons, street activity and offered the intimacy we desired on our date night. Who wants to sit next to a kitchen door? Not I... Ugh!

We ordered our two pints of Guinness draughts, nothing beats them, and put in the rest of our order. The L. ordered the crabmeat stuffed mushrooms while I just stuck to my main, the fish & chips. I tried a bite of the mushroom with its hollandaise sauce. Not my favorite flavor, very salty and the texture I did not care for. Not bad but not great. Just not my cup of tea. What was great? The fish with the fish & chips. It was perfectly seasoned and cooked, not greasy, just the right size and I would have been happy with just the fish. The chips -fries- were most likely previously frozen and brought the dish down. Making fries is not that challenging. I wish more places would take the trouble to carve up some fresh crisp spuds as the difference is vastly better and very obvious. It's the little things that can have a huge impact especially when it is so integral to the dish and not a side thought.

So for TQM, it is 3 stars in a good way. The service was very attentive and the restaurant was clean and welcoming. Had those fries been hand cut in house, this review would easily have been **** stars. Easily. Hope springs eternal! :))) I would return though for the cold Guinness, attentive friendly service and the fish but sans those chips.

So now is not even close to New Year's Day. It is still a pretty ditty. Enjoy. Almost went to the parade in Philly... Once.

If not for the friends who make any outing pleasurable, I would have had to give QM a 1!
At the request of a more than Irish co-worker, we headed to QM for an "Irish" Brunch.
Cost of said Brunch....$21.95  per person.
The buffet held few choices...all of which were scarce in supply as  well as more than half being cold. And NO EGGS at all! Brunch???? Our options included some Irish sausage (eh), potatoe wedges (cold), rice (?) and seasoned small shrimp ( tasty but odd b'fast item), bacon (again cold and chewy), blood pudding (not a fan), and a few miniscule wedges of french toast...but no syrups to be seen.
The ?brunch? included Mimosas and Bloody Marys...but don't ask for tea, coffee or ice tea as it is a XTRA charge (?).
Our waitress was delightful and attentive....but in the end I left hungry....minus some cash better spent at McDonalds.
