I have been here many times and have always had a good dining experience and the food has been consistently excellent. Â The menu is very vegetarian-friendly and is constantly changing. Â The atmosphere is artistic and fun, and with their wine flights it is a great place for trying new wines! (and now, new beers.)
Recently I went for dinner with a group and had a great vegan lentil soup that was the soup of the day. Â I paired this with a small plate of gnocchi which was also excellent (although rich). Â We tried many of the small plate appetizers and a couple of different wines which turned out to be perfect choices thanks to the knowledgeable server.
The place was busy for dinner on a Monday night and it has been busy every time I have been there--for lunch or for a happy hour or for dinner.
The food was pretty good. I had the bronzed Mahi Mahi.
The service at the bar from Robert was pretty obnoxious. Â I was eating alone and was pretty excited about eating here based on the reviews. Robert pretty much dashed the expectations I had. He was in a constant hurry to move me along and showed no interest in making recommendations or small talk.
He did not share the specials with me, which I later overheard him telling another customer.
He commented "no one has every said that before" when I commented on the wine being a little sweet. As if to say you know nothing about wine.
He asked if I wanted to see the desert menu while I was still working on my meal. I told I would when I was done with my entree but that did not stop him from putting the dessert menu in front of me five minutes later while I was still eating. I had to ask him to slow it down.
The food is good. The wine is good. I suggest you get a table and don't sit at the bar.
Is it fine dining? Â Is it a bistro? Â Is it a wine bar? Â Does it matter? Â No, not really. Â White tablecloths and fun don't seem to go together much, but a few vinyl (?) barstools kind or bridge the gap at Remy's. Â I don't know how much they really care about what category they're in here, which my wife seems to find disturbing. Â
For me, a couple of great wine flights, some awesome small plates and all that stuff is forgotten. Â Oh yeah, great service too. Â We had a Mediterranean salad, the gnocchi special and veal meatballs. Â This doesn't normally qualify as a meal, but we were eating light due to an earlier event that included some snacks. Â Any other questions? Â Okay, then. Â Anyway, all the food was great, prices were fair. Â The French and Pinot Noir flights were both excellent and fun to try. Â
Remy's is a great place to stop for a quick drink and snack, but nice enough for a dinner date as well. Â I'm a fan, even though my beautiful wife is a little confused. Â Four and a half stars. Â This is my kind of place.
I jumped at the chance to go to Remy's during Clayton Restaurant Week. 3 courses, $25, what was there to lose? Well apparently, my $25.
The service was immensely sub par. But I suppose that's to be expected during restaurant week. Even then, it took 20 minutes for us to be seated after our arrival. It seemed as though the hostess had just forgotten about us, while we awkwardly stood around in their narrow entryway as people who came after us were being seated. After much persistence, we finally found our way to a table.
So as to not delay the meal, we ordered all three courses at the same time.
I chose the Hummus plate, the Salmon, and the Creme Brulee. My friend ordered the Frito Misto, Mahi with lentils, and the Financier. As we waited, we were given a starter of tapenade with some crostini.
Our first course arrived surprisingly quickly, but was a major disappointment. The hummus was fine, but the tortilla it came with was inedible. It was stale and hard, and well inedible. There is no other way to describe it. Lucky of us, we had that crostini from the starter that we could pair with the hummus.
The frito misto was overly breaded and soggy. It was pretty easy to tell that this rendition of this dish was not how it was intended to be.
Thankfully, the rest of the meal was uneventful. Our entrees and desserts were fine. The only thing that stood out was the ginger scallion aioli on the Salmon. Everything else was, as I said uneventful. There was nothing truly unique about anything I ate there. But, hey, at least, it was edible.
In their defense, I'm sure they would have corrected their mistake had I asked. But having seen the harried chef repeatedly run back and forth from the kitchen to the dining room, I decided against making a fuss.
Being served an inedible tortilla (How can you mess this up, seriously?) just left a sour taste in my mouth and clouded the rest of my experience there. I can put up with not so great service during busy times. But inedible food? Not so much. It was so disappointing that it inspired me to write my first Yelp review (eventually).
Visited this place while I was in town. I had a wine flight for chardonnays that had one good French one and then two so-so California wines. For an appetizer I had an arugula salad which was OK; the dressing was nice. But where I give this place massive props is its main dishes. I had a Moroccan seasoned crab cake which was seasoned wonderfuly, cooked to perfection and very flavorful. The sauce was also rich, tangy and flavorful. My friend had the rainbow trout which was also cooked and seasoned perfectly and tasted very fresh. For dessert, the two of us split a bread pudding and it was delicious. The best part was this really sweet sauce that it was smothered in.
One drawback is the portion sizes are small so I would not recommend this place if you are really hungry unless you want to order a lot of food. One small plate and one large plate will probably fill you- one large plate will not.
But if you want a relatively light dinner with some wine in a nice ambiance then this is the place for you.One thing I recommend to them-- adding a Pinot Gritiot flight.
My husband and I went to Remy's for dinner last night to celebrate my new job. Â It was a Tuesday night and the service was both weird and incredibly slow. Â The hummus appetizer that we shared was excellent and we enjoyed the drinks we had. Â
Our server was pretty inattentive to our table and I am not really sure why. Â She did not refill our water the entire evening and only checked to see if we wanted more of the cocktails that we would have to pay for. Â
I ordered the Veal Osso Bucco and my husband ordered the Beef Tenderloin cooked medium. Â My entree was cold when it arrived and had very little meat on the veal. Â There was probably a golf ball size piece of gristle that filled up half my plate. Â The meat itself had very little seasoning and flavor. Â My husband's tenderloin was raw. Â The meat in the middle of the steak was purple and cold. Â We both sat there with our disappointing entrees for a long time before the server even checked on us. Â Both my husband and I told her that our food was not great. Â She offered to re-fire his steak but at this point it was almost 9:00PM and we had arrived for dinner around 7:15PM. Â
Our food was taken back to the open kitchen and inspected by the manager. Â When the manager came up to us to discuss our displeasure with our meal, she offered 1 bread pudding on the house. Â This was pretty insulting considering the both entrees were inedible. Â The manager said she could take care of the Tenderloin meal but would not be able to do anything about the Osso Bucco because all the meat had been eaten off of it. Â I was pretty frustrated at this point and told her that I could only eat the little meat that was on my plate because my entree was cold. Â She had the audacity to tell me that I should have told my server. Â I politely explained that I did and only then did she offer to remake our entrees. Â We refused and simply asked for a bill adjustment.
We went away from Remy's hungry and will probably never eat there again. Â If you go, I highly recommend you do not order from their entrees. Â Their small plate selections might be edible.
Great food - great variety - great service!
I went there for a business lunch and everything was spectacular. Â The co-worker who picked the place actually worked at there years ago and helped develop the menu. Â He recommended the stuffed grape leaves so they had to be ordered - really good! Â Served with a tomato-based sauce instead of the usual creamy, lemony sauce. Â Certainly an improvement and completely house-made.
He went for the red curry chicken salad made into a wrap while I opted for one of their samplers so that I could try more of their offerings. Â He said his was very good but I thought mine was spectacular. Â I went with the soup of the day which was a cream of butternut squash soup and it had an amazing depth of flavor. Â My lunch also came with a half-pita with three felafel inside and a house-made cucumber sauce in addition to a large spoonful of hummus topped with chopped fresh bell pepper and feta and a small salad. Â Again, everything was delicious.
If anyone involved in the restaurant happens to read this, I do have a single recommendation - the pita was very pedestrian. Â I would recommend speaking to your purveyor to see if you can get something more like the pillowy pita breads found under gyros in a lot of Greek restaurants. Â Something along those lines would have really put the dish over the top!
I really enjoyed my experience at Remy's. The decor was perfect for the small restaurant. I will definitely be returning to Remy's because the food was delightful. On my first visit, I had the grilled beef tenderloin kabobs and the Moroccan seasoned crab cake which I would definitely enjoy again!
Review Source:We have 10 people. It's nice that they took our reservation because most restaurants don't take reservation of more than 6 people. I got the seafood stew, and it's really good! The food is a bit pricey but it's good and Remy has a good atmosphere. Dress nicely, because everyone here does.
Review Source:I really like this place. Â Went as part of the Clayton Restaurant Week and very much enjoyed the visit. Â We ordered the Wild Mushroom & Asparagus Red Wine Risotto (excellent), Grilled Beef Tenderloin (very good), Fritto Misto (unique and very good), Stuffed Grapevine Leaves (decent), Chocolate Napoleon (good) and the Financier (weird name but very good). Â Liked the decor and probably okay with the sardine like packed tables but we were fortunate to have a table on the floor edge so not sure I would want to thread through several tables to be in the middle of all that. Â I don't think I've been in a more packed place. Â More tables for this week or is it always like that? Â Service fell down a bit to the point of forgetting us once things were served ... understandable maybe during a busy night but I had the vibe this was a place focused on service. Â It was very nice that the chef was out and about observing the dining room, an excellent sign that she took care to be sure things were flowing (she sat us, is she the owner?) We also had two wine flights (one white, one red) and enjoyed those as well.
I definitely would like to go back.
This place was on my bucket list of Clayton restaurants, so I jumped at the chance to go during Restaurant week. Â You know the deal, 3 courses for $25. Â I lined up some female friends and made a reservation for a Tuesday night.
I got there first, it had snowed so everyone else was running behind. Â The host was extremely friendly and engaging and promised me I was in for a treat for the evening. Â
It was a rough start to the night when the waitress apparently decided without asking that I wouldn't want to order anything until my friends arrived. Â When I was first seated she asked if I wanted to order a drink, but I wasn't done reading the wine list so I asked for a minute.. ten minutes later I finally flagged her down to place my order for a wine flight. Â I gave up on trying to order an appetizer until another 10 minutes had passed and she finally showed up with my wine. Â In the mean time I was literally sitting there at a table by myself with nothing but a glass of water. Â That's pretty annoying. Â Apparently she was too busy fawning over the table behind me, since they were regulars.
Once my friends arrived she at least started checking on us regularly. Â The food was delicious, I had the seafood appetizer with this awesome tangy mustard sauce. Â My beef tenderloin was delicious and perfectly cooked. Â Dessert was a chocolate pastry and it was too rich to finish (but I'd still try again!!)
As others have said, don't go here for a quiet night. Â The tables are really packed in and it tends to get noisy. Â I still thought it was cozy, I liked the feel of the space. Â It says a LOT that despite the lousy service I'm still giving it 4 stars. Â I'll definitely go back and give them another chance.
i tried remy's for the first time for clayton restaurant week with a group of friends. i had the mahi which was cooked to perfection along with a 'wine flight' called cab 'n fever. wine flights are groupings of 3 half glasses of wine so you can have a wine tasting experience while you enjoy your meal.
i throughly enjoyed dinner until i tried my dry almond cake with apricot jam (financier)-disappointing. all in all, this restaurant/wine bar has a nice and laid back date night vibe just have the creme brûlée instead.
Remy's is the restaurant of choice when my food friend from Chicago has a biz trip in Clayton. Â We enjoyed another fine meal, both of us selecting the bronzed mahi mahi with french lentils once again. Â Friend travels a lot, so her enthusiasm for Remy's can serve as a reliable endorsement.
As usual, the hummus tasted marvelous, lemony and light. Â We did hit one bummer---the almond encrusted manchego looked like an overfried chicken nugget and failed to entice. Â Shoulda had the veal meatballs!
Clayton Restaurant week is soon---I think I need a return visit, if only to try something new.
This place is top notch! Â
Went in with a small group of my regular dining companions for their monthly Tasting Tuesday event (Note: You will only be seated for this event with a reservation, so please do yourself a favor and call ahead). Â There is nothing I LOVE more than a restaurant where their staff is as excited and enthusiastic about the food & wine that they serve, as us Foodies are to experience it!
There tasting Tuesday event is affordable, approachable and makes you want to come back every month! Â For this Tuesday we dined on:
Tuscan Seafood Stew w/ garlic crostini - Delicious!
Abrente Albarino 2010 Napa Valley (CA)
Phyllo-wrapped Fromager d'Affinois w/ apricots, walnuts & orange gastrique - Perfection!
Clos Solene 'La Grande Cote Mon Blanc' Grenache/Roussanne 2010 Paso Robles (CA)
Eggplant Napoleon w/ tomato, mozzarella, fried spinach & pine nuts - The Best Dish of the Evening!
Palmina Barbera 2010 Santa Barbara County (CA)
As you can see the menu started out with a Bang and progressively got better! Â To round out the evening they offered a bonus dish, which was a dessert of coffee granita with this luscious whipped cream and decadent praline type topping, paired with a 5yr Aged Barbados Rum...Started with a Bang, Ended with a Boom-Bap!!! Â We all loved every second of it!
I don't know what the problem was but I must have ordered the wrong thing... Â I had the polenta fries which were not even close to actual fries. They looked like 5 jenga sticks stacked and were totally flavorless. I also had the chicken flatbread which had a small chicken bone in the meat. It had huge flat chunks of chicken that covered the entire slice. Once I took the chicken off, the pizza wasn't bad. I also didn't care for the olive dip for the bread crackers. Just not good...
Ordered two of the flights (honey and another) and both were just really bland. Didn't seem like the bottles of wine were fresh. The service was great but the food was not my taste and I was completely disappointed.
Last, the hostess was rather rude about not having a reservation but it was apparent one wasn't actually necessary because it was rather empty.
Total miss.
Tonight I decided to stop in with my dear amiga, Elle. I had never been to Remy's before but I had heard many good things about it.
Our waiter, Jack, was new to Remy's but he was not lacking in experience. He was attentive, earnest, friendly, and very helpful when it came to describing the nightly specials. He went out of his way to make us comfortable since it was our first time at Remy's.
To begin with we had an olive based tapenade with crispy crostini bread crackers and it was very good. We really enjoyed it!
For our main courses, Elle ordered the hummus and it was delicious. It tasted lemony with hints of garlic and it came with a tortilla thing which unfortunately Elle had a hard time eating due to her recent dental work. Mouth pain notwithstanding, she had a great meal, and I tried her hummus too and I must concur that it was very tasty.
I opted for the special small plate for the night which was a linguine with salmon and onions/shallots. It was very good. Creamy yet light and the flavors all meshed well together.
We had a bottle of pinot noir and we really enjoyed it.
Dessert-wise we opted for a very sexy sounding butternut squash pudding. It tasted similar to pumpkin pie and it was really amazing. Kind of like sex in your mouth. Haha. OMG IT WAS AMAZING.
Atmosphere-wise, Remy's had a gorgeous ambiance. It wasn't too noisy and the tables weren't too close together for comfort.
I think I would definitely return to Remy's. By the way menu had a Greek/Mediterranean feel to it so if you like that type of cuisine, you will definitely like Remy's.
Make sure you ask for Jack as your server because he's amazing and really friendly and you won't regret it!!! :D
Living in Mediterranean Paradise!
A busy, chatty little place packing a major flavor punch, Remy's was a last minute choice to grab lunch with a friend. When I saw the menu, I couldn't decide between..well...everything.
Service was polite but not overbearing as our waiter brought our waters and crackers with a delicious pate made from kalamata olives--Holy Hestia that's tasty! I knew from this little starter that I was in for a treat of a meal.
I decided to get the Bronzed Mahi Mahi and my luncheon partner got the Pepper Grilled Shrimp. My fish dish was nothing short of excellent. It came on a bed of plump, green lentils with shrimp; it was an oasis of flavor. This fish was perfectly cooked and tender. My friend's dish looked amazing and she said it was phenomenal, the chickpea crepe with spinach was a complete hit and conversation slowed immensely once the food hit the table (impressive since I never stop talking!)
I'll most certainly be frequenting this place far more often, especially to try this Yelp famous bread pudding!
I really want to give this place 4.5 stars - we had a great time, but it fell just short of 5 star perfection. I like that this place doesn't limit its "Mediterranean" cuisine to Greek and Italian. There were several French and Moroccan dishes as well - in fact, I walked away thinking those were their real strengths.
The three girls at the table all opted for the Hint, Hint, Honey wine flight - and yes, it's cliché that the girls got the white wine, but I've gotta say we all really enjoyed it. I was worried from the name that they would be too sweet, but instead they were balanced and just varied enough to be interesting.
For an appetizer we ordered the polenta fries and a cheese plate. Warning: the sauce that comes with the polenta fries is very spicy! Other than that I thought they were delicious. The cheese plate was also very good, though at $13 for three cheeses they could have been a bit more creative with the extras - the crackers, grapes, and plain walnuts were kind of bland.
For my main meal I tried the endive, radicchio and walnut salad and the Moroccan crab cake. The salad was delicious, but bizarre. It was a pile of about a dozen different things - lettuces, bleu cheese, nuts, carrots, and probably other things I've forgotten - but the whole thing has a balsamic-truffle dressing that overpowered most of the subtle flavors of the other ingredients. I'm not complaining, because I love truffles in all their wonderful forms, but it seems strange to include all of these mild-flavored ingredients (except the bleu cheese) and down them in truffle.
The crab cake was a knock-out. It had a great warm spiciness and came on a mound of creamy coleslaw - fantastic. It went really well with the wine too.
Other dishes on the table included chicken in pomegranate sauce on couscous (a special), which included some of the most delicious couscous I've ever had; the Mahi Mahi house specialty, which was a bit dry but came with a wonderfully spiced lentil sauce; and the salmon, which was just mediocre. It was tasty, but the marinade on the fish barely came through, so it just tasted like salmon.
Then there's the bread pudding (thanks to Stephanie S. for the rec.). It was absolutely phenomenal, loaded with apples and raisins and absolutely drenched in a warm caramel sauce. I kid you not that we were literally scraping the bowl with our spoons to get every last drop of caramel sauce from this thing.
The biggest thing keeping this from being a 5 star review was our service. We had several very long waits at the beginning of our meal, even though it wasn't very crowded on a Monday. He had trouble remembering the specials (granted, there were a lot of them) and just seemed very uninterested in our table. Frankly, he seemed bored and distracted.
Went to Remy's on a random Monday and we're very impressed! The atmosphere is very original and has a modern, yet laid back feel to it.
Started off with the veal meatballs. OUTSTANDING!
Next had the off the menu special salad with falafal, feta, olives and peppers. It was also very good. My girlfriend had the field green salad which was great as well.
For the entrees we had the wreckfish, which was a special for the evening. It was about a 5 oz portion of perfectly seasoned and grilled, very tender, meaty and mild white fish. It was exactly what I wanted. She got the grilled tenderloin. It was cooked perfect (medium rare) and was very good. The sauce that is served with it was a little too sweet, but the bleu cheese on top helped to balance it out.
We ended with the creme brulee which had a great crust on top and very good filling. Would have liked for it to have been a little colder but the flavor was there.
All in all it was a great meal and great service from our waiter Jared. Will definitely be back and prices are very reasonable. Our total bill with 2 glasses of wine and a 3 glass wine flight was $100.
This was a great little find for me on a trip to St Louis. Â I had actually never been to the Clayton area of STL. Â The little downtown was very posh, with lots of little shops and restaurants. Â Yelp came through again steering me to this place for lunch. Â
Parking is behind the entrance in the garage. Â It's not a big lot so I guess patrons have to find parking on the street or in another garage.
There is patio seating when it is not hot like now (June). Â
Decent wine list and not too expensive. Â I bet this is a nice after-work happy-hour place.
I believe there is a different menu for lunch versus dinner. There are several combo plates, i.e. soup+salad+sandwich, which is perfect for me because I really want to try their tomato soup and a Greek salad. Â There was a combo that included their famous hummus, all for $8.95 - I was sold. Â I would recommend all three items. Â The hummus was so good - I can see why there were two people who came in for to-go orders of it.
I did not partake of the dessert, but from what I saw, this would be a great place to come after the movies for a little vino and sweet stuff.
Finally, Dan, my server and bartender, was very attentive and accommodating. Â I would definitely recommend this place and if I find myself in Clayton again, I will surely visit!
Remy's did not blow me away, but there is absolutely nothing bad that I can say about it. Definitely a Clayton gem!
Being a Clayton restaurant, this place got it right. It's classy but not snooty. Both the bar and wait staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The menu is well priced based on the portions. The food is unique and delicious, and the drink selection was perfect. The atmosphere and decor couldn't simply be described by any other one word but cool.
I enjoyed the hummus as an app, and the beef tenderloin entree. Both were great. My favorite part of the evening was the wine flights. What a great price for the amount of wine provided. Well done Remy's. I also enjoyed their red velvet martini that was their drink special that evening. I hope they can make it for me again when I come back.
You can't go wrong at Remy's whether you are going for happy hour, a group dinner, a date, or evening drinks. We will be back!
Solid wine bar food with a surprisingly cool atmosphere in Clayton.
The hummus was really good and had a great taste. Â The Mediterranean salad was extremely disappointing with mediocre tomatoes, which surprised me considering the quality of the other courses. Â The beef tenderloin was solid, a small piece of meat but it had fairly good flavor and a decent portion considering we had gotten the three course tasting. Â Their wine selection was pretty impressive as well, as it should be.
The atmosphere and location was really cool, and prices are reasonable for the quality of food, but this is definitely not an inexpensive dinner.
Familiar tangent for me: Why make or take reservations if no one honors them or even apologizes for not having your table? Huge pet peeve. Offer me a table at the bar, offer to come get me at the bar, offer me something!! Â
Moving on... Clayton Restaurant Week finally lured me out of my winter hibernation. We don't really frequent the area and it was nice to try some new places for once. We took a seat at the bar (see above for the reason why) and I was in a good mood and wanted something bubbly, the scary and very busy bartender flipped over the menu and recommended a house drink. Sure. Did I mention I was frightened by her? Sip sip, yum, finally a table.
The set menu had more choices than I would expect (5 starts, 4 mains, and 4 desserts). I started off with the Mediterranean Salad with cucumber, tomato, Kalamata olives, Feta cheese and tossed with fresh lemon and olive oil. It was a large helping and full of fresh flavors. I was very pleased with my choice. I had a few bites of the stuffed grape leaves and enjoyed those as well, slightly heavier feel and flavor which went well with my salad. Next up was the Grilled Beef Tenderloin with triple-Bleu cheese butter and Cabernet reduction. YUM! Cooked to perfection with a nice small portion. There was a great spice to complement the butter and both flavors really played off each other well.
For desert I took the opportunity to get something I knew my fiancé would want more than I, so I went with the Chocolate Napoleon Cocoa Phyllo Crisps, layered with chocolate mousse and served with espresso crème Anglaise. It tasted far better than described with no espresso flavor at all, just a nice light and fluffy crème. The cheesecake that I traded for was even better. Not your traditional heavy cheesecake, but a light cheesy mousse with cherry compote on top and lots of almond flavor.
As for the service, I'll have to give them another chance since it was busy and we felt mildly neglected. I look forward to chance #2 to be honest!
Restaurant week is always a good excuse to get out of the house and go try some place we've never been before. Â My one gripe is that we made reservations for 7, yet we waiting till about 7:20 to be seated. Â I understand it's restaurant week so they are busier than normal, but what's the purpose of making a reservation if you still have to wait 20 minutes once you arrive?
We pulled up next to the bar to kill some time till we were seated and my better half went with some champagne cocktail while I simply went with a glass of malbec. Â I won't say the bartender was friendly, but she was very busy so I won't hold that against her, plus she looked like she could beat my ass so it's all good.
After we made it to our table our server showed up and brought out our water and asked if we were ready to order yet. Â Going from the restaurant week menu, I started things off with the stuffed grapevine leaves. Â I had read several reviews about these so I was excited to give them a try. Â The leaves are stuffed with a mixture of ground lamb and rice and accompanied by a tomato cumin sauce. Â The acidity of the tomato cumin sauce went perfectly with the lamb, this was an appetizer I would definitely order again.
For my main course I went with the grilled beef tenderloin. Â It came cooked perfectly with a dollop of triple-blue cheese butter and coated with a Cabernet reduction. Â My first bite was without the butter and I will say the Cabernet reduction was an odd taste. Â It kind of tasted like the glaze on a honey glazed ham, or at least that is what it reminded me up but with a very subtle spice to it. Â I wasn't exactly sold on it then my next bite was with some of the butter, and it totally changed the taste of the beef. Â It didn't mask the Cabernet reduction but it complimented it and took away the odd honey glazed ham feel that my first bite had. Â This dish came with some sauteed green beans and squash and mashed potatoes. Â
For desert I didn't get too far once I saw cheesecake, and I went with the almond crusted mascarpone cheesecake with double cherry compote. Â I was expecting cheesecake, but what I tasted only had a very slight, subtle hint of your classic cheesecake. Â It was ok, but I was expecting cheesecake so I was not all that excited, fortunately for me my wonderful fiance swapped me with her Chocolate Napoleon Cocoa Phyllo Crisps layered with chocolate mousse. Â Normally this would have been my first choice, but the cheesecake led me astray. Â Needless to say the chocolate dessert was amazing, and I counted myself lucky to have someone who would swap desserts with me.
Our server was lacking, but perhaps he could have been too busy.  I sat with an empty water glass for about half of dinner, even though I saw other table glasses filled multiple times.  All in all though it was a really good dinner. We don't get to Clayton much, but this place will definitely be on our list of places to return to.
Yes yes yes.
Come here once, come here a million times (if only I could...)
We ordered 8 or 9 small plates that day and the bill came to only about $50+ for about 12 people. I couldn't believe it. (It wasn't a formal dinner so that probably wouldn't have been enough food if it were.)
A couple highlights:
- four cheese flatbread
- polenta fries (esp. with the sauce)
- crab cake
- bread pudding
The bread pudding was amazing. We actually ordered two plates of the bread pudding. My end of the table devoured their plate of the bread pudding in like 5 minutes. And then we just kept staring at the bread pudding at the other end of the table waiting for them to finish. And then they never did! We thought there was something wrong with them. (Of course, we helped them finish it in the end.)
Remy's also has these cool flights of wine. I got 3 half glasses on white wines for $13. And it was more than enough wine for me for the night so I thought it was a great deal. Plus, it's just fun trying out all the different wines that you might not try otherwise.
It's only appropriate that my 600th review is about bread pudding. I think my 500th review was about running or something stupid like that. Eff that noise. Let's get fat.
Anyway, I finally made it to Remy's last night to try their bread pudding. This place has been on my list for AGES.
Joselyn and I arrived around 5:15 on a Saturday night. We didn't have reservations, but if you're going any later than that, I highly recommend rezzies. The place started really filling up as we were leaving (around 7pm).
The atmosphere is nice, without being too stuffy. Honestly, I was surprised at how laid back it was, considering it was in the heart of Clayton.
I started with their soup of the day, which was a mustard greens/potato/ham soup. Based on the description, I was thinking it would be a chunky soup, but it was a smooth puree. I really enjoyed it.
On to the bread pudding! The menu describes it as an apple and golden raisin bread pudding, which excited me (yay apples!) and disgusted me (booo raisins) at the same time. I know that a lot of bread pudding has raisins in it, but ugh. I don't like that. But I ordered it anyway, because you know...it's me.
Oh. My. Goodness. This? This just may be my favorite bread pudding ever. Or it's a very close second. If it didn't have the raisins, it would EASILY win first place. Everything about it was just PERFECT. Texture-wise, it was dense and soft, without being soggy. It was DROWNING in caramel sauce. And it was topped with some sort of sweet bourbon icing. It was perfection on a plate.
I could go on and on and ON about this BP, but I feel like I'm gaining weight just *thinking* about it, so I'm going to stop.
Service was friendly and attentive, which I appreciated. One negative? Our waiter didn't seem to know much about wine at all. I wanted a glass of wine that would pair well with my bread pudding, but when he stumbled and stammered over what to recommend, I decided to just stick with water. Oh well.
I would still come back to Remy's. Definitely. It's worth it for the bread pudding alone!
This place was all around cool. Â I felt like I was part of the rat pack, with Sammy to my left and Dean to my right hanging out here. Â Somewhat of a basement location with ambient atmosphere with soft lighting and quiet music. Â A number of nice tables with boothes around the outside of the restaurant.
The menu was eceltic, similar to tapas type feel breaking the meals out into small plates and large plates. Â I had the lamb shank, and I felt a little like Fred Flinstone with the size of this shank. Â It looked like it came off a dinosaur, not a lamb. Â Their wine selection was outstanding and they had a number of wine flites, kind of like the sampler appetizer of wines. Â I enjoyed the pinot noir flites.
Mildly pricey, but to be expected for the style and location of the restaurant. Â Definitely a great date spot, or something for a special occassion like the celebration of a graduation of a family birthday.
Remy's Might possibly be my favorite restaurant in St. Louis. This place is consistently good and I have never had a bad meal here.
My favorite dish here is the Crab Cake. It is absolutely amazing and I get it every time I come. They put something crunchy in there (like some kind of nut) and celery. They top it with a sauce that is delicious and serve it with a side greens. The taste is great, the presentation is good and the only negative is that there isn't more.
All of the selection of meat that I have had here have also been very good from the steak to the lamb shanks. The sides, including the mash potatoes and green beans, are also very well done and very flavorful.
The bread pudding is incredible and has a brandy sauce. The sauce alone is amazing and would be great just over a little vanilla ice cream. I would recommend that anyone who like bread pudding try this out if you are ever at Remy's.
This place isn't cheap but at the same time isn't too expensive to go to on a smaller budget. All in all the place offers a nice atmosphere, good food and a nice selection of wine (no beer on tap but they have a few bottles). Probably my favorite place in the city.
"Wine makes daily living easier, less hurried, with fewer tensions and more tolerance." -- Benjamin Franklin
That quote is painted on the wall at Remy's, and I have to say that I can't agree more! Quotes are painted everywhere you look, and they're so fun to read while looking at all the bright artwork & decorations. Remy's is just flat out happy inside, and it's a great spot for lunch or dinner!
Lisa, the owner of Remy's, has always been one of my favorite people in the industry! She's such a genuinely nice gal & is always willing to help out others. Lucky for us, she puts together a pretty incredible menu, too. Had lunch there this week and went with the "quick and healthy - three small plates" option. My lunch had tomato basil soup, hummus with feta & bell peppers, and Mediterranean beef salad! So many flavors. I wanted a glass of wine so badly but decided to be responsible...
We ended lunch with banana sorbet, and oh. my. G. So refreshing and served with some mint leaves on top for the perfect ending to a great Mediterranean style lunch! Check this place out & ask for Lisa so you can tell her hello. She'll make your day a little brighter and she'll make you a solid lunch, too!
Remy's is a new favorite! Â I had a gift certificate to use, so I went last night (a Monday night) with my boyfriend. Â We got there around 8pm and there were only a few tables that were occupied. Â But about 30 minutes later, the place was almost full!
We were seated right away and then greeted by our waiter right after. Â He brought us some crispy bread pieces with a kalamata olive concoction for dipping - amazing! Â Then he gave us some suggestions on the Reislings available - I chose the German Clean Slate and Tom had the St. Christopher Piesporter - both were delicious. Â For starters, I ordered the Moroccan Seasoned Crab Cake, which was to die for! Â (Seriously - I've had some really good crab cakes, but this blew me away!) Â It also came with a side of cole slaw of some sort that was really good too. Â Tom got the Falafel, which was great as well. Â
For dinner I ordered the Grilled Beef Tenderloin which came with a side of grilled veggies and some really amazing mashed potatoes. Â it also had some sort of a garlic-blue-cheese-butter on top, which was amazing. Â Tom ordered the special - a beef-stuffed bell pepper with a tomato sauce with a kick, and those yummy mashed potatoes. Â
We also got dessert, which didn't disappoint either! Â I went simple with the Sorbet du Jour - which was raspberry, my favorite! Â Tom got the Poached Pear with Ginger Pear Frozen Yogurt, with raspberry sauce drizzled all over and powdered sugar on top of that. Â It was delicious!!!
We went over our gift certificate amount, and normally I'd say this was a little over our Monday-night-dinner-budget, but it was completely worth it. Â The service was great, the restaurant itself has a wonderful ambiance to it, and the food and wine was to die for. Â If you haven't gone yet, make it your next date-night or girl's-night spot!
Remy's served one of the better meals I've eaten in St. Louis.
They have an extensive list of small plates, and a handful of larger entrees as well. Â I decided to go with three small plates: The feta mousse (served with fried pita), the polenta fries, and the falafel.
The feta mousse was extremely good: Rich, creamy and tangy. Â It sat alongside a roasted pepper spread which was also pretty incredible.
The polenta fries looked like golden Jenga blocks (and were stacked like them, too!) Â They were crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and full of cornmealy goodness. Â It was served with harissa, which is a spicy dip of Tunisian origin.
The falafel was wrapped in pita (or was it a tortilla? Â I'm not sure... if it was pita, it was super-thin) and also accompanied by the harissa, and was quite good.
I got a nibble of everything my wife ordered -- she got the "Remy's Dinner Flight" which came with stuffed grape leaves, a field greens salad, and a grilled beef tenderloin. Â (There were a few other options for the dinner flight, but those are what she chose).
The stuffed grape leaves were probably the best I've had, and the grilled beef tenderloin came topped with a delicious bleu cheese butter and came with tasty bleu cheese mashed potatoes.
I also got a nibble of my wife's aunt's hummus, which came with the pita/tortilla that I described earlier, and it was tangy and very good. Â It was her birthday, so she got a complimentary creme brulee, which we all shared -- and it was also excellent.
Other notes... the bread comes with tapenade, which was very heavy on the olive flavor (as it should be) but good. Â Even my wife, who doesn't normally like olives, liked it. Â My wife and her aunt both ordered bellinis, and loved them. Â (I'm not a wine fan, so I can't really speak for the quality of the bellinis. Â But I would hope they were good -- the place does call itself a "wine bar"!) Â The waiter was very friendly and helpful -- he happily told me about the harissa, which I had never heard of before dining at Remy's.
The food may not be as creative as what they serve at, say, Niche... but they have a diverse menu of food from all across the Mediterranean and quality is definitely in the same league.
Hands down, the best meal I have ever eaten in Saint Louis.
My boyfriend and I were given a gift card to go here so we decided to go for my birthday. Â When we got there and the staff was extremely friendly -- the hostess wished me a happy birthday upon arriving and the table had colorful ribbons on it for the occasion.
We decided that instead of each ordering a large plate, we wanted to split a bunch of the small plates. Â We couldn't have made a better decision! Â We started with the hummus and the artichoke, tomato and mozzarella salad. Â Both were so incredibly flavorful! Â The hummus was a chunkier variety and the texture of the chickpeas and the feta worked together SO well. Â The salad was so extremely well balanced. Â The flavor of the artichokes and tomatoes came through past the balsamic so well and the mozzarella's lightness worked so well with those flavors.
For our "second course", we ordered the Parmesan Polenta fries, the falafel, the beef tenderloin kebobs and the kefta. Â Another instance of one item being better than the last. Â The polenta fries came stacked like jenga blocks and were extremely crispy on the outside with a moist, chewy center. Â It was like eating a large, ungreasy fry that tasted better than any I've ever eaten before. Â They came with a spicy tomato based sauce that was divine.
The falafel was perfectly cooked and extremely flavorful. Â They came wrapped in a pita with tomatoes, lettuce and cucumber if I remember correctly, as well as the same spicy sauce from the polenta fries. Â So yummy.
The beef tenderloin kebobs fell apart in my mouth and had the absolute best flavor -- a rich, meaty taste. Â Hard to describe but absolutely delicious. Â The kefta was my least favorite item, but nevertheless very yummy. Â It was very well spiced, though perhaps not as well done as I typically like my kefta. Â The tabouleh that it came on was a small plate to itself, very moist and flavorful all on its own.
I should note that the portions are perfect for splitting the way my boyfriend and I did. Â Portions come in even numbers (6 fries, 2 falafel pitas, 2 kebobs, etc) and were generous enough that ordering 6 small plates left us stuffed).
The denouement of the meal was dessert.  We ordered the apple bread pudding.  It's clichéd, but it really was a "died and gone to heaven" moment.  The texture was PERFECT and the flavor...  There aren't words.  Go try it!!!
The final surprise of this amazing meal was the bill. Â We hadn't really been keeping track of the bill as we ordered our small plates. Â Based on meals we've eaten at comparable places (though I have to say, on quality, I can think of none), we were expecting the bill to come out to about $70. Â We were totally off -- for everything we ate, plus drinks (no wine, as I'm not 21) came out to only $50 dollars, with the restaurant covering our dessert for my birthday. Â Incredible!
I could not recommend this place more highly. Â It was in all honesty the best meal I can remember ever eating, in an extremely pleasant environment with exceptionally friendly staff. Â Go there tonight!
I came here for the first time last night for the annual Sephardic Cuisine meal, a 3 course meal complete with wine pairings for $34/person. We had the following:
- Dolmades Avgolemono: grape leaves stuffed with rice, raisins, mint & lemon zest w/ egg lemon sauce, paired with a Boutari Moschofilero 2008. Interesting take on a dolmades, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this. The mint and raisins combined together were especially delicious.
- Caldeirada de Peixe: Portuguese fish stew w/ tomato, olive oil & herbs, paired with a Aveleda Charamba 2007. Amazing combination of different kinds of fishes, and the tomatoes and wine were surprisingly a wonderful complement to each other.
- Chuletas de Cordero: grilled lamb chops marinated in garlic, lemon, saffron & smoked hot paprika w/ piquillo peppers & crispy potatoes, paired with a Bodega Luberri "Seis" Tempranillo 2007. The lamb was cooked perfectly and you could really taste the different ingredients that were in the marinade. This last wine was also my favorite.
All of the food was SUPERB, and the wines were also amazing. The chef and sommelier definitely did a fantastic job of preparing the entire evening. There was also an explanation of each course and wine, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Highly recommended!
Remy's also has special events each month, so check out their website to find out when the next one is. Great find.
This is a great lunch spot in Clayton. Always bright with a very cool decor. If you love wine, this is the place to come. You get wine flights and I used to love these mini introductions. They make it very approachable.
When you sit down you get a bread basket and a dish of housemade olive tapenade. I love the idea, but the tapenade is way too tart for me. More kalamatas and less oil, I think.
I love their stuffed grape leaves with ground lamb in a tomato cumin sauce. Fantastic!
Their cobb salad with w/ roasted vegetables, hard boiled eggs, kalamata olives, bacon and bleu cheese (I sub out feta) is really nice. With a glass of iced tea, it's heaven!
Last time I tried the mahi mahi with jumbo shrimp served over
French green lentils and wasn't at all impressed. The fish was nicely cooked, but it was lacking flavor. I'd love to try one of the weekly specials, though:
Tuesday - Roasted Chicken in Puff Pastry
Thursday - Lebanese Rice & Stew
Friday - Boullaibaise
Sounds yummy!
I personally love it. Â I've only had delicious things here so far. Â Oh, and try the desserts if you can fit them in, yummy!
Here's what I REALLY like about it---the menu is small, I can barely commit to a t-shirt, much less a dish on a menu the size of  a novel!
Also, the wait staff is fantastically nice. Â
They have these review cards at the table that you can fill out when you're done and it goes into a drawing. Â I filled one out the first time I was there and won a $50 gift certificate for my next visit (they sent it in the mail)!!! Â How cool is that?! Â Just for filling out a card! Â Totally worth it.
It's a little intimidating at first b/c people like to stare at you when you walk in (maybe they're looking for someone famous?). Â It seems snooty, but the atmosphere is really nice once you get past the ogling. Â You'll want to dress at least somewhat nice to avoid being stared at through your entire meal. Â Nothing says, "You don't belong here." like jeans and a hoodie at Remy's!
I will go back again and again!
