I know I am getting Americanized Chinese fast food here but I was still amazed by the amount of the 'red sweet and sour goo' and SUGAR they drench their food in. Â Husband ordered their Korean noodle bowl and we laughed when the bowl arrived -- it is a Korean brand instant spicy noodle topped with frozen seafood.
Food quality is on par with most Chinese fast food places around town but it is definitely more expensive.
I personally did not like the food at all. We ordered General Tso's and sweet and sour chicken and both were probably some of the worst Chinese we've had in awhile. The General Tso's was very chewy (perhaps overcooked?) and the crab rangoon was also not the best. The sweet and sour sauce was very bland as well.
I want to like it due to the location and great reviews, so I might be willing to try something else one more time but for now I recommend taking your money elsewhere.
I really want to like Rice Cooker. The staff is nice and it's really the only Chinese carryout in the Ville (that Chinese buffet in Boone Village doesn't count). Doing vegetarian dishes well is usually a strength of Chinese restaurants, but I've been disappointed. Soggy tofu and limp veggies. Yuck. I've given it a few tries hoping I just hit them on an off day and that's the consistent result.
Review Source:Stopped in here for a fast bite while waiting for my daughters at Canterbury Manor Stables. I've driven by here at least a few hundred times and I felt it was time to test it out. I guess for mainstream "Chinese" cuisine it was ok. Server was very pleasant, but he drug his feet while he walked which drove me nuts!! That said we ordered somewhat mainstream. Wonton and egg drop soups where average. Sweet & Sour chicken which was surprisingly good. It came out piping hot and nice and crispy not soggy. I ordered the Korean Calamari extra spicy. This was nice. It had green and white onions with a little Kimchi cabbage. Sauce was good but it tasted like the actual squid was cooked over one of those pupu platter flame thingies!! You know that sterno flavor! It kinda killed it for me. All in all I think if you are interested in mainstream "Chinese" cuisine and you stick to ordering that here you will be just fine.
Review Source:Where do I start with the Rice Cooker? Well, I've been going here since I was 14. Mike & Jessie (the owners) and Terri & Rick (servers) have been there since I started eating here over 10 years ago. This says a lot to have the same staff for that many years! They must be doing something right.
I have yet to have anything here that I did not like. I usually prefer the Teriyaki Chicken (spicy) with steamed rice. This is a simple yet filing meal. I like my food the spicier the better. The hot and sour soup is the best I have ever had at any Chinese restaurant ever. Another option is the Mu Shu Chicken (or pork). It comes with cabbage, snap peas, sprouts and tortillas (they call them pancakes) to place the meal into and eat like a burrito. It also comes with a plum sauce that is excellent for dipping this into; or you can just put it straight on the tortilla.
The food comes out very quick; so if your in a hurry, you should have no problem getting in and out in 20-30min. But please don't mistake this for fast food, it is far from that. The food comes on nice china with metal utensils, and the drinks come out in nice glassware. This is an upscale Chinese restaurant in comparison with the usual "billboard back-lit menu's", Styrofoam plates/cups, and plastic utensils. I have even been in their kitchen. I was invited in by Mike, the owner. This is the cleanest kitchen you will ever see. I would recommend the Rice Cooker to anyone. Bring the whole family and enjoy your experience and meal!
Carry-out (order at the counter) or sit-down-and-order-from-the-menu (waiter will take your order). This is _not_ a cookie-cutter strip-mall Chinese place. No back-lit pictures of entrees on the wall. No red-and-green-print menus. They have their own custom menu.
Nicely decorated and extremely clean dining area. Stainless steel utensils, real plates, glass beverage glasses, nice paper napkins. Asian background music.
My standard Moo Goo Gai Pan was very fresh, noticeably more so than the average strip-mall Chinese place. The stir-fry sauce was different enough to be unique to this restaurant, not the ubiquitous white sauce served everywhere else. It also had a touch more garlic to it.
The egg-roll was pretty good, better than average.
Service was attentive.
Men's room was utilitarian, not decorated, and was also used for storage. It could have been tidied up or touched up a little, but was not dirty.
The only awkwardness is that the restrooms are located in the employee/server area, so you have to walk past the server stuff and the beverage cooler. To me, that detracts from the ambience. But the dining area was so much nicer than average strip-mall Chinese restaurants. (I tend to be a little generous with strip-mall restaurants since I don't expect much going in.) Table-tops and chairs were in good repair, not worn.
They had a steady stream of customers during the dinner hour, both for dine-in and carry-out.
