Pitchers of super strong margaritas, good food and huge portions... if any of that sounds good, head to Roberto's. Our table ordered enchiladas, flautas, and taquitos, and everyone was super pleased with their choices. We even had enough leftovers to eat two more meals. We managed to walk in right before the dinner time rush, the waiting area was packed when we left, so just be aware the place can get slammed and the parking lot can fill up.
Review Source:I'm from Southern California and this was the best Mexican food I've ever had. Â It was fresh, full of flavor and just so good. Â I ordered a combo plate with an enchilada and taco and my mom had a chili relleno and beef enchilada. Â The food was hot and delicious. Â The service was great and the chips and salsa were also yummy. Â Go to Roberto's. Â You won't regret it!
Review Source:I've eaten here about once a year for the past 10 years. Â It's average Mexican food. Â It has always been busy whether it's ski or fishing season. Â Sometimes it feels like a cafeteria, and other times it's been pretty noisy. Â Good for large groups and kids. Â I see many of the other reviewers seem to like the carne asada and the chicken. Â I've ordered those a few times, but they were always too salty so now I order other things on the menu.
Review Source:Oh Robertos ... you hit the spot late on a Friday night.
You offered decent margaritas and good grub. The cadillac was a-ok - nothing too special. The chicken tostada was delicious! Â The chicken was tender and fresh. The portion was ridiculous. The service was MIA. I'm sure I'll be back - it's hard to turn down Mexican food and drink.
the husband and his family have been going to mammoth ever since he was little (actually his dad has been going ever since he was a teenager). Â so when they go to mammoth, a favorite is roberto's.
something worth mentioning is their margarita (cadillac) pitcher! Â you gotta get this. Â word of caution, it is really, really strong! you know, if you're into that kind of thing.
food: you arent going to think "oh man, this is the greatest mexican food i've ever had" (especially all us lucky folks down in southern california) but it is tasty. Â it's great after a long day on the mountain or sledding! crunchy chips and salsa, hot burritos, fajitas, tacos, roberto's has it all.
service: Â always friendly!
parking: ample
They're good for both dine in and take out.
Dine-in: They were able to accomodate our group of seven with no wait on Saturday around 8. Â The food was good and the portions were generous. Â I especially liked the carne asada burrito and fajitas. Â
Take-out: Â The food was ready in less than 10 minute when I called in on Friday night.
Hands down the strongest margaritas in town! Â The margaritas were sooo unbelievably strong, not your typical 95% sweet n sour like most places. Â And we are drinkers, so no light-weight here!
Went here with hubby and 2yo last night, sat downstairs @ 5:15. Â Delightful service from our waitress (unusual for this town) , she was attentive to our son and helpful with extra plates/cups for him. Â By the time we left, the lobby had a good 15 minute wait.
My duck burrito was OUTSTANDING. Â Hint: ask for the wet-sauce on the side so it doesn't get so soggy. Â It is enough to feed 2 adults. Â You CAN NOT eat this burrito, or any of theirs, with your hands. Â This is a knife and fork kinda meal! Â Hubby got shredded beef burrito and brought 35% of it home! Â I brought 75% of mine! Â HUGE portions. Like others have said, the salsa is much spicier than your run of the mill Mex restaurant, so watch the kiddos when they try to dip! Â
This is a no frills place, but certainly nice enough for a sit down/service meal. Â I will be back here every Mammoth trip from now on.
Had the carne asada nachos. The serving was so big that three off us could not finish them. They were tastey but it's hard to screw up nachos. Service was decent. Not terribly fast but not too slow. My whisky sour was potent. The burritos are huge. I also tasted my friend's Mexican pizza with shredded chicken. That was also yummy. Overall, I'd recommend this place and I do plan to return.
Review Source:This is my go to place in Mammoth. I tried Gomez's the same weekend in Feb this year and Roberto's came out ahead as I knew it would. The happy hour rocks. The upstairs bar the place to be and the not too cool downstairs the ok place for families.
Thursday nights Chile Colorado burrito rocks my snowboarder world, and the chicken burrito stellar. Chips only ok and Margerita's a solid 4. I get 3 meals out of each burrito so yeah the prices are fair! YUM I repeat YUM
Mexican food and pizza are the standard restaurant options in most mountain towns and Mammoth is no exception. Â Roberto's is one of the best options for getting your burrito fix and is a great option for refueling after a day on the mountain. Â Portions are large so you can stuff yourself and also you will not drop much money stoking the fire for those powder runs.
Review Source:As locals living in Bishop, we've been here numerous times. We love the food! However, after last night's experience I won't ever come here again. We checked in, were told it would be a half-hour wait. Knowing the Mammoth has been packed for the holidays, we were happy to wait. An hour later, they told us they'd have our table in 15 mins. So we waited, only to be told it would be another 25 mins. The waiting room filled and emptied several times, and the staff told us we didn't have "preferred seating." WTF?! They don't take reservations but give preferred seating?! We were disgusted. No meal is worth being treated that way.
Review Source:This place is amazing! I hiked all day and was ravenous. Service was really fast, the chips were warm, salsa was perfect! I ordered a salad with ranch. It was delicious! Had tomatoes, olives and cheese on it. The ranch wasn't too thick. I got the 2 item combo with a chicken taco and chicken enchilada. They have very big servings so come with a big appetite or take a box with it home like I did. The rice and beans were some of the best I've ever had. And the chicken tasted like it was slow cooked. This is a place I'll be back to next time I'm in town!
Review Source:Well ... its been awhile, but I must review yet again!!
Roberto's ... ahhhh ... Roberto's. The last time I ate here I was in High School. HIGH SCHOOL!! Through the mists of time, we peer back and remember our previous experience. Twenty years ago the only options for Mexican food were Robertos and Del Taco. My little brother (who outweighs me) ordered a potato and beef burrito. We soon found out that a potato and beef burrito was comprised of potatoes, beef, tortilla, and potatoes ... maybe salt ... there is a family dispute on the salt.
However, my mother claimed that she and my father had revisited the vaunted "Robertos" and had claimed it "good". Well ... ma is a classy lady that comes from good stock. We put faith in Ma.
We strolled up to Robertos early (4:45pm) and got a table rather quickly and our waitress greeted us (she was awesome). My wife ordered a Margarita. I ordered guacamole. The Margarita was excellent. This is where the high marks come to a screeching, smoky, painful, anti-lock brakes causing the shoulder strap to bite into your skin hault.
The guacamole came from one of two places:
A) A bag of frozen mush from Vons
B) An avocado beaten to within an inch of its life, taken to a North Korean prison camp, tortured for the last 20 years, brought back, tortured again, water boarded, frozen, thawed, beaten some more, put on life support, so it could be pummeled to death with bats.
The guacamole was akin to eating green sour cream with no taste and chunks of tomato. I'm sure your mouth is watering.
The food arrived. Certainly it couldn't be worse than the guacamole. WRONG!! Enchilada Rancheras will forever have a new place seared into my family's memories. Apparently Roberto is actually "Robert". Robert looks at Ranchero and thinks "ranch". I have NO IDEA what happened, but my enchilada was covered in ranch dressing. Now it may have been bad Queso Fresca, because I was sick later that night, but it tasted like ranch dressing. I had to ask for red sauce. WHO HAS TO ASK FOR RED SAUCE ON ENCHILADAS RANCHERAS?!? You do ... if you are at Roberts. The enchilada itself though, was ... well ... unbelievable. Apparently they took a corn tortilla and then lovingly wrapped it around ... a cheese stick ... but they DID IT LOVINGLY!! So while all our meals were pretty awful, on the up side ... there was a LOT of awful food. I couldn't eat more than a couple bites. ME!! MEEEE!! All of my friends are reading that sentence with shock and horror. They are rending their clothes as we speak (type) and lumping ash upon their heads in great mourning and sorrow.
Do not be fooled by the full driveway and bustling activity! All it means is that the locals have completely fouled taste buds and tourists don't know where else to go.
Finally, after speaking to my mother, we found out that she meant Gomez's. Mom's taste bud's honor remains intact, but I'll probably be forced to consider this moment when selecting a rest home.
Recap: The wait staff is awesome. Margaritas are great. Pity the guac. If you have to eat the food, you need to order about 30 Margaritas first. Really though ... you shouldn't eat the food .... just go to Gomez's. Finally, it should be called Robert's World of Suspect Tacos, not Roberto's.
Very nice patio that allows dogs. Â Drinks are good, no gross mixers or cheapo tequila. Â The food was good as well. Â The spices were a bit toned down, but the grilled meat and fish were very good. Â
I was there for a late lunch and was able to linger and savor my margaritas after a hot morning climbing rocks. Â It was great to sit on the patio with my dogs.
A friend of mine said to try this place while I was visiting Mammoth. Â The wife & I stopped off here in the afternoon for lunch. Â The menu was quite extensive with lots of different choices & all the dishes were pretty much what you would expect from any Mexican restaurant. Â I'll do my usual break down to keep it simple & to the point. Â
Staff: Was super nice & attentive to our needs
Food: I ordered the Carna Asada burrito & it was quite delicious. Â The steak was of good quality & VERY tender with a nice citrus flavor to it. Â The burrito was HUGE & stuffed with beans, meat, & covered in cheese & a really good home made green sauce. Â The beans were very good with a nice creamy texture & the burrito had a side of sour cream & Guacamole. Â
Prices: Well the prices are pretty much what you would expect in a mountain town far away. Â The burrito plate I ordered was $9.59 & the 1 item taco combo my wife ordered was $10.00
With many new Mexican restaurants opening in the town this one has been around a long time & is a town favorite. Â On a side note the chips & salsa are great BUT the salsa is VERY spicy as some others have mentioned. Â I'll be coming here again on my next visit!
I like this place, good service, food is great and they are not jerks because you did not have a reservation.
they sat us down quickly feed us fast, and the food was to standards and beyond, i have the CARNITAS with flower tortillas (so gooooooood)
my friends had the duck quessadilla and he had a orgasm in his mouth.
i recommend this place on a busy holiday anytime. Â THANK YOU COOKS,BARTENDER AND SERVERS.
Throw down on some epic margaritas.
After a long day climbing, skiing or cycling come here to get the motherload of goodness. Â Get some margaritas and some cheesy goodness. Â This place has a really fun and cool inside. Â I always enjoy rolling here when in town.
Don't half step. Â Don't forget to chase your margaritas with glasses of water so that you don't wake up with a gnarly, elevation hangover!
I LOVE Mexican food. Love love love.
That being said, I really wanted to love Roberto's, or at least like it. I came here for happy hour to get dinner with my friends. We went through loads of chips and salsa and then got various kinds of tacos. My duck taco, which I was really excited about, ended up being pretty gross (and the aftermath was even worse). It was incredibly greasy, and neither my stomach nor tastebuds were fans. My friends were fairly satisfied with their food, but we agreed Taco Bell was better. (Ouch..)
After how sick I got, I don't think I'd ever go back. I do have a friend who's a die-hard Roberto's-lover, and others who are just as 'meh' as I am.
Roberto's would probably score three stars if it were located a little bit closer to civilization, but because it's in Mammoth, it gets a very high four.
All the times I've come in the summer, it's been very crowded, and there has been a wait. Â Despite this, my party has been seated relatively quickly, and the service has been stellar. Â The servers are busy, so they might not have time to chitchat, but they do put up with my father's gentle ribbing, and they do seem to enjoy their jobs, which is both surprising and unsurprising because I assume many of them are only here for the summer.
The food itself is good, and the portions are huge. Â And I say that as someone who eats a lot. Â It will fill you up. Â It's not really very authentic, but what were you expecting in Mammoth?
Not too shabby. Â Some items great, some ok.
Not gross mountain town food, but not the best Mexican by any means.
Good vibe, kinda a happening place for cocktails after the mountain. Dare I say kinda fun.
Service decent for a mountain town.,
Expect to wait to eat. Â There are limited choices in Mammoth and this is one of the better ones...
Below the box in which I'm now writing, there are (as you may have noticed, if you write reviews) survey questions. One of them says, "Takes Reservations: Yes, No, Not Sure." Well, that is the perfect place for me to start off...
My family made a "reservation" at Roberto's for a dozen people. The reservation was taken over the phone, and we showed up on time and with the expected number of people. So, why--dear God, why--did we have a table for 10??? When we asked, the chowderhead of an hostess said, "Um... This is all we have room for." We all looked at each other in confusion, as we squeezed cheek-to-cheek into our undersized booth.
My sassy aunt said, "Is there any reason you didn't tell us this... oh... four hours ago, when we made the reservation over the phone?"
The bimbos response?.... "We have a bar area upstairs. You can check and see if you fit up there."
WE CAN CHECK? WE CAN CHECK??? How about you get your size 16 ass up those fuckin' stairs and check yourself, you cow??? My uncle and I, assuming we were going to just leave, started wolfing down chips and salsa at our ill prepared table. Aunt Sassy fired back, "How about YOU check, since you're the one who couldn't manage our reservation correctly to begin with?!" She sighed and struggled her way up to the bar area, returning a few minutes later to beckon us up.
We waited in the bar area as they moved some tables together. The bar steward was totally cool, and after waiting for our table and drinking our anger away, we tipped him right good.
The food was completely average, aside from the copiously large burrito that my cousin got. It was the size of her face, and I've loaded a picture to prove this is not simply hyperbole. The chili verde lacked an acceptable amount of meat, and the tacos were poorly made, allowing all the contents to pour out of the bottom upon the first bite.
The only reason this place got two stars from me, and not one, were the comparably affordable happy hour Margies. These folks don't water down their Margaritas for happy hour... They were made with love; maybe because we gave our liquor savior a ginormous tip, as we stepped away from the bar, just before we were seated. Either way, the drinks did NOT go unappreciated.
Overall, I would say this: food was not memorable, service was memorable for all the wrong reasons, drinks were strong enough for the Irish side of my family, but I won't be going back. Unfortunately, when you're stuck in a small mountain town and you're craving Mexican, you have few options. Personally, I'd rather make my own Mexican food back at the condo.
Roberto's and I go way back-- so far back, in fact, that one could say that Roberto's and I have grown up together. Roberto's: established in 1985... Eva V.: established in 1985. Since I was old enough to behave myself at a restaurant (more or less), I've been coming to this restaurant on my trips up north to Mammoth Mountain.
My favorite tradition is to go on a major hike or hit the slopes in a hardcore kind of way and then stagger my tired rear in to Roberto's for one of their gigantic burritos and a margarita. Be prepared to leave this place feeling totally stuffed, and there's always something leftover to take home.
My only complaint would be that their margaritas aren't the best, but I can't quite put my finger on what's missing. As a kid I used to love getting their virgin strawberry margaritas with a dollop of whipped cream, so if you're gotta little ones, why not indulge them in this mock alcoholic beverage. Who knows, perhaps this will put the wheels in motion to turn your little one into the next lush Elite Yelper! Either way, come here for a meal that is sure to hit the spot!
Pretty good Mexican food in general and some kick-ass margs. Â A buddy of mine once passed out during dinner, but that was really his issue not theirs, don't forget to drink a lot of water if you're not used to the high altitudes. Â They were nice enough to let me finish dinner.
Thankfully, they added an upstairs bar and now the waiting room no longer overflows into a cold parking lot. Â The bar menu used to be (and still may be) different than the dinner menu, but last time I was there they were nice enough to order from the bar menu at the dinner tables. Â If you're on the fence about trying their duck tacos when available, go for it, they're pretty good.
The wait was brutally long on a Saturday night (1hr 10 mins), but thankfully they have a rockin' bar upstairs with unbelievably cheap drinks (I've been sadly acclimatised to $7 beers and $10 cocktails in LA) - something like 6 drinks for $30!
Wait was worth it - the food is really good. Â The carnitas were super savory and lard-ilicious. Â Big portions, reasonable prices, friendly service and fun crowd. Â
Just be ready to wait...
