Just had a second great meal and experience at The Underground Lounge. Â We own a vacation home in Mammoth and have a list of our favorite places to visit when in town. Â Lakefront was a favorite for years and we were curious to try Chef Frederick's new venture at The Underground.
What a pleasant surprise! We stopped in the other day of drinks and snacks and were pleased to have great service, outdoor dog-friendly dining, and a nice list of craft beers, wines and cocktails. Â We enjoyed a delicious poke appetizer and a salad. Â We stopped back in tonight originally for a glass of wine and stayed for dinner. Â Our server Tess was a delight. We had the lamb shank and beef bourgeon pasta, kale salads, wines and a delicious chocolate mousse. Â Chef Frederick came out to chat and told his concept was to offer good value and stretch his menu choices. Â Some of our favorites from Lakefront remain on the menu with some nice additions. Â
We are in our 40s and completely enjoyed the music selection playing at dinner - trendy, hip, upbeat but not obnoxious and we could carry on a conversation. Â Prices are in line and competitive with similar places in town. Â Probably the best list of cocktails in town right now. Â We had late lunch at 2pm and dinner at 7 pm so I cannot comment on the late night scene but it sounds like fun and the room is set up so you can dance or have a drink on the other side. Â
Nice addition to Mammoth and glad we can enjoy Chef Frederick's cuisine in a new format. Â We will back, The Underground just made it on our list!
Wanted to try a new place in the village. This place looked nice and chill. Good patio seating. Waitresses were very slow, just seemed like a disorganized place. No one helped use for a long time. They didn't give us utensils until 5 min after our food arrived, each meal cam out one at a time, never got any bread but every other table did, the pizza was all dough and little tipping. They brought a glass of wine but it was more like half a glass. The "warm kale salad" was not warm at all.
Review Source:THE NAME IS DECEPTIVE. It should be called BISTRO UNDERGROUND or TAVERN UNDERGROUND. The "Underground" bespeaks of a nightclub only. This is THE restaurant in Mammoth Lakes. We would not have gone except we learned that this was Chef Fredric Pierrel's new restaurant. We went on the early side to avoid the crowd. It has a very pleasing atmosphere mix of casual and classy. One look at the menu and we knew we were in the hands of Chef Frederic. The menu is good food with a bit of a flare and elegance, but it is by no means extravagant or high brow. The wine list is eclectic. Don't know what to order, ask for Chef Fredric's recommendation. Chef came out several times to chat, discuss wine, talk about his new venture. As the evening progressed, more people came to the bar and a few more tables filled. The background music (it was not a live band or DJ while we were there) was a terrific selection of rock, alternative, and pop, but always at a level that made conversation easy. The lounge really takes over later in the evening, however, Chef told us that he has had dinner going past 10:00 p.m. on occasion. The staff is young but ever so friendly and attentive. For that extra attention, go early. We are so glad Chef Frederic is back at Mammoth!
