I've slowly grown to have a craving for Rubio's. This is one of the few places in the dreaded Ocean View Plaza that will pull me in to battle the hideous parking and the nutso drivers.
The service has always been pleasant and is usually quite fast considering everything is made to order.
I was shocked one night when they were near closing and the salsa bar was still fresh! What fast food restaurant makes sure they keep up on things even before closing? I'll tell you, one that gets bum-rushed 15 minutes before closing because it's one of the few restaurants open relatively late in an area that pretty much turns off after 8:30pm (they close at 9pm on Weekdays).
If you come in for dinner you'll notice it can be kinda quiet. But, it can be shockingly busy at lunchtime but you'll almost always find a place to sit.
This is the nicest Rubio's I have been in. Since I work in the same parking lot, I frequently stop by for a quick lunch. The staff is always friendly and courteous to me. Last time I was in, the manager Ryan was even walking from table to table asking everyone how their meal was. Very nice touch.
They have good fish tacos , chicken tortilla soup, nachos ,chipotle ranch chicken salad, and they even have the "healthmex" taco and burrito.
Is it the best mexican food ever? No. But it does the job as a solid lunch spot during the week while I'm at work.
This place is very solid for a chain. Better than any other Mexican food chain that I'm aware of in SoCal, including Baja Fresh. To boot, this location is stellar. The best out of five locations I've tried.
I love the salsas here. I love the blackened salmon burrito and the garlic herb shrimp tacos (though I once convinced them to make me a garlic herb shrimp burrito and it was the best thing I've ever had at Rubio's). Just one criticism: when you advertise "grilled shrimp," they should have a bit of a char on them. They should be slightly crispy, not wet and flimsy as though they came out of a can. This is a problem at all Rubio's I've tried, not just this place. So I think someone at the corporate office needs to get a clue.
My roommate Jenn is from So-Cal and boy was she right when she said that nothing on the east coast is comparable to fish tacos from California.
Rubio's is fast food  chain that specialized in tacos, much like Chipotle, but 10x better!!! They serve a variety of tacos including beef and pork tacos, but I don't fuss around, I know what I wanted and I walked into Rubio's was high expectations and they were all met. I got the blackened ono taco and original taco combo with beans. And my friends got the shrimp taco with avocado, fish burrito and a variety of other fish tacos that i couldn't remember because I was too busy stuffing my face. The fish were made to order and the staff personally delivered my order to the table. The original fish taco was served with pico de gallo salad instead of cabbage; I particular liked this because the corn and onion have it extra flavor. The grill shrimp taco looked absolutely orgasmic, but unfortunately I was too full to try a 3rd taco... there's always a next time.
OHH! How can I forget, there's a salsa bar serving a variety of 4 types of salsas. My favorite included the mild green salsa with cilantro and onion, and a medium spicy red salsa that had a smokey flavor.
Okay, someone needs to franchise a Rubios and build it next to my house in NY. I'm drooling as we speak.
Had grilled tacos and the food came out a little cold. I had still eaten it because it was so good but let them know it was a little on the cold side. Not really a complaint but a suggestion. They offered me two cards with free tacos on our next visit. Good food for a great price and very conscientous.
Review Source:It was a pretty average Rubios. Â Nice place to sit outside and enjoy the sights of Orange County. Â AKA lifted trucks, tattoed people, ugh. Â The food was decent, but the girl who took the order was without personality. Â Plus, since when is an allergy chart nutritional information?!?! Â sigh...I guess some people just don't get it.
Review Source:Fish taco Tuesdays are your best bet here and the shrimp quesedilla is decent. Â Most of the items are pretty tasty and you can order a burrito on a wheat tortilla for a "healthy" alternative. Â I really like their salsa bar. Â The portions are fair. Â Not bad for commercial mexican food.
