Sorry Toro, but your profile seems as about fishy as the unfresh salmon you mentioned. I totally have to disagree with your review, especially since you have 4 sushi restaurant reviews on your profile and you posted them all in the same day.
Was visiting my family in Springfield and they took me here. I'm from NYC, so I'm very picky about good food. I was not expecting to find decent sushi in Springfield, but this place really surprised me!
Sakura's sushi is extremely fresh and the restaurant itself, is very clean. The staff is very professional and very attentive. Everyone was really friendly.
We ordered the white tuna sashimi, udon and some special rolls. The fish was very fresh and the chef prepared it some sesame oil and sea salt, which was delicious. Their udon had really great flavor and the noodles were cooked perfectly. Our sushi rolls were packed with fish and not all rice! The combinations were really nice and we customized ours with spicy mayo. I recommend the Derby Roll.
Finally, we ordered Green Tea Ice Cream. It wasn't watered down, like most places serve.
What a place! A hidden gem for sure! Doesn't look like much on the outside, but don't be judge the cover. Great atmosphere. Classical music. Friendly, attractive staff. Very fast, professional service. Delicious sushi. Large portions. Small prices. Clean. Quiet, fun and relaxed. This is how to do a restaurant! Unexpected and definitely my favorite Sushi bar so far.
Review Source:Great sushi, even better service. Free miso soup, edamame sample, and ice cream. Rolls were reasonably priced (I liked the Jurassic park roll) and delicious. Really great atmosphere and I can't say enough about the service. Friendly, quick, and very polite. Will definitely be going back when I'm in Springfield again.
Review Source:This place is great for sushi. I went here with a couple of friends and we all just ordered sushi. The staff was very friendly and helped us with any questions. When they brought the sushi out it was delivered to our table on a huge boat with all the sushi displayed on it. A great way to try a lot of different sushi and the just split the check equally with your friends. I will definitely be coming back when I get a craving for sushi again.
Review Source:Clean, quiet ad traditional rolls. Â Staff was friendly and efficient. Â I was there early (6pm) and got the happy hour sushi menu, meaning lower priced rolls. Â Less than $20 for two rolls and an ice tea and tip is good in my book. Rolls where delicious too. Fresh and well made. Â I would definitely say to try this place out if you want traditional rolls. Â It's not a "wild and crazy" roll kind of place. Â The oddest roll on the menu was a buffalo roll, which I didn't really want to try haha :)
Two chop sticks up in my opinion :)
Not a 5 star sushi joint (in my experience in sushi restaurants), but Sakura is absolutely not a dump. Â
Their spicy salmon rolls and bento boxes are affordable (I think lunch runs you $7 and it includes salad, soup, ice cream, rice, main course, etc).
I prefer the Beef Terriyaki or the chicken, but most of my family and friends love the Ichiban Chicken.
There are some "language" barriers at times when doing call in orders......but it's nothing intentional and they've been very attentive to correct any errors.
There are some really sweet servers (always asking about my kids when I meet the wife without the kids with us), and they are attentive to beverages refills and ensuring you get your meal in adequate time.
I recommend Sakura.........not the best sushi place in town, but certainly not a dump in the grand scheme of things.
This is the best sushi place in Springfield. The fish is always fresh, and the atmosphere is fantastic. I enjoy Kai, but it can be too night clubby and not as intimate as I like for a sushi restaurant. They are super inexpensive and if you go during lunch or there early bird special 2 people can eat for under 20 bucks!
Update 11/27/2012
Visited Springfield again and I am not sure if they sold the restaurant or what, but things have changed and the lunch specials have changed and the dressing somehow seems watered down. The price seemed to jump pretty drastically too. What happened?!
Super casual and friendly environment, easily handled a last-minute group of seven despite being busy. Some of the rolls weren't the best, but the pink lady and the jurassic park were particularly delightful. Intense and delicious ice cream at the end. Great service, good price, will absolutely return.
Review Source:One of the best atmospheres, Friendly Service, and all of the food is delicious!!!! Â My recommendations are the sakura roll and the Ichiban Chicken (it's like Japanese general chicken!!!). Â In addition to the delicious, everything is reasonably priced and it's the types of dishes that after you leave the restaurant you have a feel good feeling all day (aka best hangover food).
Review Source:Fantastic in every way! Â LuLu was our server and she was wonderful. We ordered the squid salad and various other appetizers and they were all superb. We also ordered a variety of sashimi- white tuna, salmon, and octopus. My favorite roll was the lighthouse. Overall an excellent experience and meal. I'm from Florida and have not had much luck with sushi in this part of the country. I will be back!
Review Source:I hope the owners read this. Â Imitation crab IS NOT CRAB. My soft shell crab roll even had fake and real crab in it. Every other roll I ordered had fake crab too. If you must use it, at least list it on the menu so i can avoid it. Â Otherwise the service was good and everyone else seemed to enjoy it OK. Â The Shushi was just not up to par.
Review Source:Flat-out one of the best deals you'll find for lunch in Springfield. Â A full meal bento box (rice, meat, tempura veggies, eggroll, salad, and ice cream for dessert) for around $6.
Service is always friendly, food is great, and never a wait to sit. Â Never had a complaint here. Â The only thing keeping it from 5-stars for me is there sushi is lower grade than some other places in town, but is basic and still not bad... I order it occasionally.
If you're lunching on a budget (or just looking for a great meal at a great price) then this should be a regular on the playlist!
You want real sushi, you say? You want a quiet atmosphere that is authentic?
Go here.
The price is pretty reasonable. You won't pay out of your ass to eat something filling. Hell, I find that three total rolls is more than enough for two people. You'll walk out having paid a grand total of nearly $25 for two.
No BS about this sushi. None of that crap that Haruno/Kai does, either. You get plain, old-fashioned sushi. I think the only "gutsy" thing on the menu is the Buffalo Roll, which is just buffalo-flavored fully cooked beef in a nori. You won't get a flaming pile or a sauce-soaked combo here.
I really have more bad things to say about other sushi places than I have good stuff to say about Sakura. I mean, if I can't say anything bad about a place, that means I like it.
Well, there is ONE bad thing I can say.
There is a server there--I call her "white girl" since she isn't Asian--she is an idiot. Every time she serves us, she either bothers us too much or screws up the order. Not to mention she is also VERY awkward. Don't be surprised if she makes off-key, out-of-place humming noises while staring at you long after her queue to exit sounded. One time, she brought my appetizer out AFTER we finished our entrees. Listen, white girl, I used to serve: I KNOW when you forgot to place the app ticket in and when the cooks screw up. You can't lie your way out of it.
If you get anyone else but white girl, you'll have a great time and leave happy.
I used to love to stop for lunch here when it was on my way to work. Very fresh and lots of variety (almost too much; it was often hard to choose!) but whatever I ended up trying, I loved. This is where I learned to have a craving for sushi.
It's also less "intense" in atmosphere than some of the other sushi spots in town. It's very simply decorated, comfortable and - as someone else said- has a nice clean feel to it. Plus the staff/owners are wonderful people- they're enthusiastic and very patient and helpful if you're 'new' to sushi!
Sakura is my second favorite Japanese restaurant in Springfield. I love their pink lady roll and crunchy rolls. I have just recently discovered their wonderful lunch special. I get the shrimp tempura bento box. It comes with three pieces of shrimp tempura, several pieces of tempura vegetables, rice, salad, a spring roll, a slice of orange and ice cream! Their green tea ice cream is my favorite!!! If you haven't tried it, it should be next on your list!!!
Review Source:Sakura has a great atmosphere and super friendly staff. The people that own and work there are actually Asian too, which I appreciate from places that make Asian food. There are plenty of sushi options including a bar. They also have a private room for groups. The food is authentic and so are people. Come here for a relaxed meal or to just overhear the language.
