This is my favorite place in Folsom!  Anytime I have visitors, this is always our first stop before I show them around.  The taps are a plenty and they are continuously changing.  One of my favorite things about Samuel Horne's is the ceiling.  The ceiling, coupled with the decor, really makes you feel like you are in a classy old west saloon.

I can't believe I haven't written a review on Samuel Horne's yet! Definitely been there enough times!

The Place: has a fantastic pub-like feel. Wooden walls, small high-top benches and stools in the middle, cozy nooks around the edges of the place. . . a small bar at the end where you order your drinks and food. The "flavors of the week" are displayed proudly above the bar area with plaque-looking chalk boards.

The Service: The bartenders act as the servers and they are always friendly. The owner is in quite often. Some nights are trivia themed, and as silly as that may sound, the place gets PACKED on those nights! I think Wednesdays?

The Food: DELICIOUS! Their all-beef hotdogs/conydogs, their veggie burgers, their beer selection. I love stopping in for lunch for a burger and a beer before heading on a stroll down Sutter Street or riding my bike to the Century 14 Theaters for a late-afternoon movie.

Very yummy! Love the French dip sandwich. Service is great. Gets a little over-crowded, but this is a very popular place. Loved playing trivia on Wednsday night. It was a blast. I definitely look forward to Sam Horne's whenever I come to Folsom

Best place around for a refreshing and unique beer along with a fantastic menu! They have a fun board to let you know what beers are available and it is so informative. I myself am not a hop fan. Their board lets you know every beers hop level along with if it is a pale or dark beer. Great way to try new things without being disappointed. Their atmosphere is cozy and familiar feeling. The restaurant is small so get there before the 8 o'clock rush of locals. They are constantly throwing different events. It's located right in Old Folsom which is always a fun place to walk around. We usually have a beer or two, throw down some food, and if we're not too full, walk over to Snook's and cool down with a scoop of ice cream. Parking around the restaurant is free too. Needless to say, we are regulars!!

They have deep fried hot dogs here. Good beer selection. Not a lot of seats but everyone was pretty friendly and we got a seat only after like 10 mins. The bathroom feels like it's outdoors but it's apparently not, so don't smoke out there.

First time I dared to try a peanut butter and bacon burger was a couple years ago at a place in New Orleans called Yo Mamma's Bar & Grill (highly recommend, btw), and thought it existed no where else besides a place like NOLA.  And then I went to Folsom.  We chose this place 1) beer and 2) so I could try the peanut butter and bacon burger.  The results: I think Sam Horne uses better bacon.

As a first timer, it's a little weird walking in, because you don't really know what to do or where to go.  Tables are grab-as-you-see-them, and beer and food are ordered at the bar, on the opposite end of the bar from the front door.  It's an interesting set up, but somehow it works.

And I love the descriptions on the boards that tell you about it.  Who doesn't love a place that educates you on your alcoholic selections, instead of just trying to get your drunk?

P.S. the bathrooms are through the side door and at the end of the alley.

Sam Horne's could easily be the premiere beer bar in Folsom, but the honor still belongs to Manderes. As some have mentioned below: the atmosphere isn't incredibly inviting, the place is a haven for beer snobs. Those who don't know what they're looking at on the draft list will likely have an unpleasant experience.

Food is well done for pub fare. They get some seriously unique kegs to choose from and are always mixing it up. The elusive Pliny the Elder can be had here, and vertical taste tests for Sam Adam's Utopias and Stone's Epics would be hard to find anywhere else. Definitely recommended.

A friend and I were in town for the weekend to try the local beer & pub scene and we ran across Sam Horne's in our pre-trip research.

Although this place is on the small side, it is full of great food and exceptional beers.  As others have mentioned, you order at the counter, get your beer, find a seat, and they bring you your meal.  This day (Sun 3/10/13) we found Pliney The Elder on tap, so we obviously had the nice guy behind the bar pour two.  Other beers on tap were ones we knew (Lagunitas, Stone, Auburn Ale House) and others we did not (Knee Deep, & a few others).

For lunch I had the Turkey Club with a garlic aoli sauce. It was fantastic! My pal had the Burger, which he said was very good.  The fries were also cooked to perfection.

This place is fairly simple.  One booth that can hold 5-7, a couple of booths for 4, two bar high mini-tables(2x10x6) for 6, and a few tables of 2 & 4. Also 4 seats at the bar.  A total of about 40 seats.  Some tables made of 1" plyboard stained, kegs with cushions for seats.  It is a nice place to grab a bite and have some solid brews.  We were very pleased.

The guy behind the bar was really nice, and fairly knowledgeable about the beers. He was quick to offer tasters of various beers. Two Thumbs Up to him!

This will be a regular stop as we drive Hwy 50 up to Tahoe!  The M-F Happy Hour Specials are half-price beers brewed within 100 miles.

Date night in Old Folsom. No kid. We went to Sam Horne's Tavern. Gobs of craft beers on tap. Lots of wood interior. Laid back atmoshere. Excellent drinking establishment. I kicked things off with a Firestone Walker Union Jack. A person can spend eternity choosing a beer because of the vast array of choices. After the beer we got the hungries. The Johnny Cash burger was the obvious choice for me. Ordered another round of beer, devoured the Johnny Cash bacon burger and proceded to enjoy ourselves. If a prisoner escapes Folsom, they should come here first.

I love this place. That nutty whatever burger is so delicious- peanut butter and bacon? Definitely amazing. It's super casual and you order at the register so there's not much to say about service but whoever is back there cooking up the food has a really great idea of food and puts great twists on simple stuff. I highly recommend you grab some food along with whatever beer you go to grab. This is mostly just a great place to grab a beer but don't discount the food because it's really fantastic. I love the homey atmosphere.

I don't give five stars often but this review was definitely needed.

Was extremely hungry yesterday after running many errands in Folsom.  Our Folsom friends along with my husband wanted something low key, simple yet filling.  I also informed them that I wanted to try something new and have the opportunity to Yelp about it.

Our friends suggested Samuel Horne's Tavern and that may have been the best suggestion I have had in a long time!  Located in old Folsom, Samuel Horne's Tavern in nestled in between a few wine bars, boutiques and other small establishments.

The beer that they had available were outstanding and the bartendar was extremely helpful and suggested that my husband get Sierra Nevada Beer Camp 25 Specialty Brew.  He loved it! I think I saw his eyes roll back a little.

For dinner, we ordered at the bar and found a great booth for the four of us.  We ordered the spinach salad to share (delicious and simple, get the dressing on the side). The spinach salad included baby spinach, candied pacans, dried cranberries, bacon and blue cheese goodness.  I orderd  the Tavern Turkey Burger with crisp shoestring fries and must say that it was so moist and delicious, I could have easier ordered another one. The turkey burger included pepper jack cheese, serrano aioli, lettuce, tomatoes and onions. The bread was so soft and fresh and the fixing inside were AMAZING!  It was definitely one of the five turkey burgers I have had in a long time.

My husband ordered the Cootie Burger which was recommended by the bartender Dylan and I would have to say that Cootie Burger was hands down the best thing BURGER I have ever had.  The Cootie Burger had peper jack cheese, raw spinach, serrano aioli, and fiery roast serrano chillies topped with an over-easy fried egg.  The Cootie Burger has a nice little kick to it and did I mention that they put a fried egg on top?! Let me repeat that...they added a fried egg on top! Dayyyam!

Dylan was REALLY nice and was great about asking us if we needed anything and brought us water without any trouble.  Great establishment, food and drinks.  I wholeheartedly recommend this casual and cool place for lunch or dinner.  I will have to order an entire cootie burger for myself next time! Nom nom nom!

If I were to claim a watering hole as my own, it would be Samuel Horne's. knowledgeable staff, spot on brews to satisfy the most hardcore beer nerds, killer events all the time, good pub food, old school atmosphere. Standing room only on some of the event days (fair warning). Can't think of much room for improvement at this awesome establishment, unless they could find a way to give out free beer? Pipe dreams aside, the brews are very reasonably priced particularly if you consider the quality. Local brews are cheaper yet! Go Horne!

Best craft brew pub in the greater Sacramento area.

The selection is constantly changing and always includes 16 different beers on tap. Typically local brew or highly rated brews from California. Beer is served in the proper glasses and the price for the quality beats most other pubs in the area.

Could use some more upbeat and knowledgeable servers and bartenders. The manager that's usually there knows his stuff and is always willing to talk beer and is just a really friendly guy.

Food is pretty great for such a small kitchen. They really need to figure out a way to expand or move into a location where they can cater more customers. I went this last Saturday with my girl and it was packed - they were doing beer flights which is probably why. Trivia nights are typically packed too.

Atmosphere is really what sets this place apart, the seating is such that you become acquainted with strangers pretty easily. Most of the people who come through here are beer nerds which is a refreshing change from most other bars out there.

Beers that I would claim are the "best I've ever had" have all been at Samuel Hornes. Russian River's Pliny the Elder being one of them.

Somebody else said it too... I want to like Samuel Horne's more than I do.  It feels good when you walk in... inviting but small.  3 booths, a bar that seats 4 max, a bench seat spanning a couple of tables with beer keg seats on the outside, a couple longish narrow (beer glass width) stand up tables in the middle and 2 really comfy leather chairs in the front window.  Small is ok but Samuel Horne's fills up fast and tight.  The staff is... well... not unhappy to see you, but indifferent most of the time.  I will say that service is quick and spot on.  Don't go for the bear hugs...  DO go for the beer, something for everybody here...  properly drawn in a clean and cold glass.  The do have a full bar also, but honestly that's not what they are about.  Will say that they do pour some nice (but limited selection) spirits aimed at those who know the better stuff.

The food is typical pub grub but executed much better than your typical pub.  The sliders offered at happy hour are a delight... small dinner roll bun grilled with garlic, a bit of cheese, a pickle chip and a gynormous slab of meat for a slider, we're talking meat hanging out of the bun on all sides here.  I'm pretty sure it's a quarter pound AFTER cooking.  The meat is fresh and flavorful and I swear the cook grabs a handful of hamburger, flattens it on the grill and cooks it till its slightly crisp and caramelized on the outside and still juicy on the inside.  The fries... others rave about them here... but honestly they are just frozen shoestrings that are cooked properly, nothing to rave over.  The quantity is a different story... a basket is good for two unless your fry crave is maxed out.

Go... you'll like it here... start with the happy hour and sample away at brews and food.  I will definitely be back and I swear if just one staff crack a smile or joke I'm adding a star.

Came here while visiting friends in the greater Sacramento area. We stopped in during the early afternoon and had a seat in a larger booth near the door. Since we are awkward ducks, we took turns going up to the bar to order our food.

I had the Cootie Burger (see photo) that was tasty (but messy!). It came with thick fries that were crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside.. very satisfying meal overall!

Our drinks were refilled by a very diligent waiter.

I'd return to check out the tavern scene if I were in the area again!

This place is totally chill and has an excellent selection of beer. I think there is something for everyone here. I personally adore dark beers that have that great chocolate touch to them.

They have some tasty blue cheese fries.

Fun place to hang and relax in downtown Folsom.

I've been here twice, and I wasn't disappointed either time.  I'd say that this place caters to a more mature palette in terms of appeal (as in, no stupid college kids clogging the place up).  I don't really drink beer, but I do eat food (quite a lot of it, actually), and theirs is great!  The boyfriend and all of my beer-drinking friends seem to really like the beer selection, though, and the ambiance is nice -- good decor, relatively low lighting (aren't all bar-types places like that, though?), and no annoying drunken assholes to bother you :)  I only give 5 stars to places I go to regularly that deserve it, and I live too far away from Folsom to go here regularly, but this is as close to 5 stars as I'm going to give :D

Been here several times, read all the reviews below, can understand some but others are in serious need of a reality check.  Bartenders stole your father's credit card info?  Purchases in Indiana?  Did you ever prove this?  Ridiculous.  When has a bar not held onto credit cards for keeping tabs open?  It's more a bar than restaurant - learn that.  Why the hell do you need smiles, group hugs, and blown kisses to you all the time?  Did you grow up a sheltered child?  People are god-damn-freaking-ridiculous these days.  It's ME ME ME anymore.  Order your damn beer, go sit down, and thank Sam Horne's for not bugging you every five minutes with water.  It pains me to even respond to you whiners but you deserve the attention right?

Now on with the review - great beers, really good food - Cootie and Dobbie are off the charts.  Fries are excellent pub fare and the atmosphere is great.  Not stuffy and pretentious (like some of these reviewers).  If you don't like their service, go to the Sutter Club across the street, then talk.  If you can make it through your beer without vomiting from the stench of piss stains.

Staff can be brash but only because they know beer.  They'll mix beers and let you sample anything.  Now, back to letting you be you.

This place is great... be it a bit small inside due to popularity...  The staff knows their beers, the food is good and service is on it... My only real issue was due to the small size and number of people it can be quite loud and hard to hear.

PS, one thing i miss in this town is The Oasis which used to be at Madison and Sunrise. Samuel Horne's has a good garlic fries dish, but they could do like Oasis used to do by adding crumbled blue cheese and drizzling hot pepper oil around the plate...just a suggesion ;-)
OH! and if Dillion ever reads this and adds this to the menu, you should totally name it "Rusty Fries", just sayin...

This is going to be a hard review for me.
Why? Because I kinda liked this place.

It had a nice atmo that was small but not too overwhelmingly close or noisy.
It had a fine selection of brews and a couple of nice whiskeys (although they could do better). Stormy and I split a burger that was nice as were the fries.

So why three stars you ask?

Because the barkeep was a total zero. He acted like he couldn't care less that we were around. He actually lost my credit card (held for the bar tab) and after I told him who I was actually tried to ring me up on the wrong tab.

I'm hoping future outings here will be better.

It takes a lot to give 5 stars, but Samuel Horne's truly deserves it!  We have gone here a few times now, and it has become my absolute Go-To for one of the best burgers that I can get in Sacramento.  I'm not kidding.

I get the Cootie Burger and it is so perfect!  It's not a massive slab of meat, but it is just right.  I have never been disappointed.  They do another version of it with steak that my wife loves, but I don't remember the name.  Their food is always awesome!

Then there's the beer.  Absolutely comprehensive beer selection.  They have a whole wall of beers on tap from all over Northern California and even further.  But they are rotated all the time, so every time you go, you can try something new.  I love that I can get some of my favorites on tap, like Lagunitas, but I also love to try new stuff that I haven't had.  They will even let you taste some to see if you like them before ordering.

It's got a great pub vibe, can be crowded at busy times, because it is small, but I love that about it.

I highly recommend this place if you like the pub feel, but with legit beers and awesome food instead of the bad pub food that many places sell.

If you're in it for the beer, this is the best bar in Folsom. Ambience, service, selection, food...you name it, Samuel Horne's delivers. Conveniently across from Lockdown Brewing, & the Sutter Club, adjacent to the Folsom Hotel, and pretty close to Powerhouse and Scarlett's, this is the crown jewel of Sutter Street. With Dogfish 90 min, Green Flash, Anderson Valley Mexican Lager, Pliny the Elder, and twelve other great options on tap, no trip to Folsom would be complete without a visit here. The BLT came with thick slices of bacon, crisp lettuce and lots of flavor...the Johnny Cash burger is wonderful...

If you respect beer, then you'll love this place.

I can't recall eating more than a few french fries, so maybe they need work, but honestly, if you're going here for the fries, your priorities need adjusting.

I was very happy to come across this place. They have a great beer selection, both in terms of what is available on tap and by the bottle, and it is all served up by bartenders that know their beers. I also had their Nuthouse burger, with PB -- my first foray into PB on a burger, and I was very pleasantly surprised. Top that off with good bacon, and serve it on a tasty bun, and things look even better.

The only thing that marred it for me were the mediocre fries. Still, I will definitely be back.

So after having a not so great experience down the street at Powerhouse, my husband and I wandered into this place. I actually didn't want to go in based on just appearances, but we ended up spending a few hours in the place.

The bartender was very nice, polite, and knew a lot about the beer he was serving. This place apparently rotates their "menu" every day, so there's always something new. I couldn't tell you what I had other than Pliny the Elder, but they serve a lot of good beers. I liked their "menu" because it tells you where the beer is from, percentage, and level of hoppiness.

We had some great conversations with some strangers, learned a lot about music from Seattle thanks to the bartender, and drank some really great beer. I would love to come back to this place again soon!

Went here with friends the other night. I love that this place isn't just a bar, but it's a bar that specializes in carrying some of the best beers you'll find anywhere, most of them on tap.

Every beer I tried was fantastic, so let's move on to the food. The blue cheese and bacon fries were delicious and while I had my mind set on one of their sausages for dinner, I ended up getting the special, which was a yummy steak sandwich with blue cheese, corn relish and a chipotle aioli. This sandwich was amazing, and should get a regular spot on the menu because I can't imagine ordering anything else.

One of the best restaurants I've been to in the area.

Okay, I have yet to try a beer here, but that's next!  So far, I love this place.  They sell scotch.  But not just cheap scotch like Glenlivet - the only single-malts I personally saw up there were all Islays, and that makes a big difference in how I will view a place.  They seem to serve scotch for people who actually drink it, not just to have it.  So, obviously, we had to get a Laphroaig.  Beer next time though, I promise!

We had some food, and it was definitely better than expected, but still tavern food.  Overall, I can't wait to come back here again.  It had a nice vibe, and seemed to have a lot of very loyal regulars.

The head honcho kept wandering around making sure everything was okay, but he also seemed a little concerned of me and the guy.  Maybe he was so shifty eyed because both look young, but it made me slightly uncomfortable.  That's my only complaint, though, and from a business perspective I can't really blame him for being wary of younger patrons.  Even though we are of drinking age, younger folks are known for not tipping well in the industry; hope we quelled any doubts he may have had when we left.

That said, every one who works there seems incredibly nice.

Decent burger, shoestring fries but the kicker is the on-tap beer selection! Even though the menu was limited, there are things for everyone, including a Philly Cheesesteak type sandwich that looked pretty good. Still, if you focus on the beer and enjoy the details of an ale or port served from the right glass then you'll love this place. If you think food first  you may be a bit disappointed.

Take some time to read the tasting suggestions on the wall as the details are similar to tasting a good wine.

I'll be back here for certain after a good bike ride on the American River Bike Trail!

    Folsom Historic District.

It's a little joint with craft beers and food. 16 rotating draft beers. Tons of the bottled variety. The food-- I was disappointed. True, I only had this or that and not really a try at a great number of things but-- what I did have.. turned me off. It sounded good but when I had it, I was mad I ate it. Come on.. Bacon and blue cheese fries? Sounds great. It reviewed really well on yelp. Tried it, hated it. There were bigger chunks of bacon in my salad than in these McDonald-esque fries..

Turkey Burger.. didn't like that either. I had it with a spinach salad and that was the only thing I liked-- the spinach salad.

Nice place to have beer and that's about it for me. Food curiosity is now off here.

If you are looking to escape the boisterous sports bars on Sutter Street and just want a place to kick back with your buds and a nice pint of beer, Sam Horne's is waiting for you. They have a huge selection of local microbrews on tap and the bartenders are willing to help you decide on a beer that suits your preferences. Their prices are very reasonable, averaging $5 a glass. With delicious food, an eclectic collection of beer, and cushiony seats, this tavern is a great place to go after a long day.

    P.S. Bacon and cheese fries.

Love Sam Horne's. Had a burger for the first time last night... the Cootie Burger, a big, perfectly cooked patty, spinach, seranno chiles, housemade aioli and topped with a fried egg... yes! Needless to say, it was scrumptious! The fries are great there, too. Last night, just had the standard fries (which are great on their own), but the blue cheese/ bacon fries are out of this world.

Came in 3rd during Trivia Night, which, barring other plans, is now is my weekly plans. Friendly vibe and great beers. Love it when they had Pliny the Elder on tap a couple of weeks ago, but they rotate their 16 or so taps very frequently.

We decided to make an early dinner stop on our way home from South Lake Tahoe.  So we checked out yelp and did a search for burgers around El Dorado Hills and Folsom.  Samuel Horne's Tavern was highly rated so we decided to give it a shot.  We really enjoy the charm of downtown Folsom and its history.  Samuel Horne's Tavern is a part of a group of historic buildings.  The ceilings and walls were classic.

I ordered the Johnny Cash Burger (Topped with bacon, cheddar cheese, grilled onions, and bourbon-espresso redeye sauce) with Bacon Blue Cheese Fries and a Ruthless Rye IPA.  I ordered the burger medium rare and it was fixed perfectly.  The sauce with the bacon and cheddar cheese was super tasty.  The Bacon and Blue Cheese fries were not what I was expecting.  I was thinking they would just be smothered in it.  But they were not.  Lightly covered and very good.

My wife got the Sam's Classic Burger and it was awesome as well.

Great place!  We will be back.

Tip:  You seat yourselves and once your ready to order you need to go to the bar.  The bartender will take your food and drink order and then your food will be delivered later.

Holy hoppy happiness! Please god make me a bird so I can fly to this place often!

First things first... It's in historic old town Folsom and has taken seriously the nostalgic feel required to fit in around here...

It's all about beer here right? Over 15 beers on tap and a list over 100 bottles. Who can go wrong? Well, even for a beer lover like me that list is a bit overwhelming. I stuck with the draft menu and the influence from the "beertender" :)

So, the Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye and the Trumer Pils were up first. The Ruthless Rye was so well balanced with just enough hops to round it out that we had to have a second round! The Trumer Pils was fresh and tasty, but maybe better saved for a summer day.

We also tried the Knee Deep Brewery's "Zack's Double IPA." Hops abound in this brew and I was quite taken with it.

We also had some treats to go along with the brews... The "Cootie" burger, with pepper jack cheese, raw spinach, Serrano aioli, and fiery roast Serrano Chilis topped with an over-easy fried egg did the trick! It was full of flavor and I will most certainly be back for more of that!

The shoestring fries were okay, but I've had better.

There is no waiter service here. You order up at the bar and they bring the fixins to the table. this should be remedied.

Otherwise, this was a mighty fine gastropub... We'll be back for the Johnny Cash burger with bourbon BBQ sauce. Til next time!

Samuel and I have a bittersweet, long distance relationship. I wish I could see him every day, but alas, because of the distance between us, it's only an occasional rendezvous.

Still, every time I show up at his door, he looks better than ever, donning classically dapper yet casual attire that makes me melt right into his arms.

During our date, Samuel spoils me a fantastic selection of craft brews and complementary bar food. Sam knows just my taste!

In the end, we must part ways, and I spend my 30-mile bike ride, train trip, or by car ride home thinking about how lucky I am to have met Samuel Horne and to have him in my life, even if we only meet on that rare occasion.

This place is awesome.  I came in here yesterday during a break on my Monday Funday festivities across the street at Sutter Club.  The dude I have been allowing to hang out with me got the Johnny Cash burger and I got the regular cheese burger, and they were awesome.  The fries were super duper good, too.  They reminded me of McDonald's fries, which is weird cause I hate McD's but I love their fries.  They are legit.

I know that beer aficionado's will love this place.  They have a ton of beer you don't normally see on draft, or even in a "normal" bars inventory.  I don't care about beer but I care about the concept.  Score.

I almost wanted to give this place only 4 starts because the potties are outside and around the corner, but that is just the way the building is laid out.  It is so tiny in there that we were lucky to get a bar seat.  Real real lucky.  So 5 stars it is.

Our bartender, her name is Natalie, was awesome.  She made me a legit Bloody Mary and was definitely on her game.  As a fellow slinger of the sauce I appreciate a bartender who can multi task and not look like a confused mess.  She had it together.

    I will definitely be back!

    Love the small town atmosphere!

This place is a little cozy hangout for beerlovers.  I am not a beer lover and I can still appreciate the awesomeness here.

No I didn't have beer but the pear cider I had was off the hook.  And the turkey burger was amazing.  The chili fries, OH so so bad for you but tastes so good.

I even enjoyed the spinach salad.

The only downside is seating.  There is not a lot of places to sit down comfortably so get here early or try to come when it's not too crowded.

I love the thoughtful pursehooks under the tall bar tables!

Bathroom was not a delightful experience =( but I'll live.

Welcoming atmosphere, maybe a little odd for people who are used to full table service.

Here is a clue, you order food and drink at the bar, they give you a number to place at your table, you wait for the food and voila it appears.
