Such a beautiful, historic and quaint little theater. I love the architecture and the ceiling inside is absolutely stunning! Such thought, time and detail was obviously put into the interior of this theater. It's amazing that this relic has survived since 1927. The seats are also very comfy, and I don't think it's possible there is a bad seat in the whole place. I felt transported back to a time and place long ago. I look forward to seeing another show there in the future.

I am a fan of almost any old Art Deco theater with comfortable seating.  It transports you to another era when theater was the main form of entertainment for the well-to-do.  If you were the other 99%, you kicked rocks and played with tree branches.

We came here to an evening of Chinese folk dancing.  One of things I like to do in venues like this is to look up at the ceilings.  The interior was very beautiful - ceiling, light fixtures, ornaments, archways and columns.  The sound was pretty good and the seats were not too bad.  My husband who is 6'2 felt the seats a bit cramped, but I guess we spoil ourselves with stadium seating in state of the art movie theaters nowadays. You definitely feel like you're stepping back in time and get a true sense of local history walking in and out of the theater.

Never even knew this place existed until I attended a graduation here a few weeks ago. It is a very beautiful place. Definitely can "feel" the history. Can someone please tell me how parking works around here though? I would imagine they have it all worked out during most special events, but for the graduation it was to each its own, which was not at all convenient. Otherwise, nice place, quaint location, clean.

If you're a SGV kid, chances up, you grew up with this place. I've been backstage as a  dancer & ensemble kid performer, and in the seats every single year to watch their shows. This place is lovely and accommodating.

Gorgeous, too. People here are friendly, facilities and restrooms are clean, and the seats are nice and plushy as well. Check out the gorgeous ceiling and interior design, it's simply breathtaking.

Maybe it's a little haunted as well? A lot of my fellow students have claimed to seen ghosts, and I had a frightening experience as well, (flickering lights, a falling set that injured a little girl backstage when I was only a few feet away.) Hrm, I suppose it's up to you to decide.

Anyway, all that aside, this place is lovely and it's got a lot to offer for everyone. Check out Temple City High School's musicals, they're so worth it.

My wife and I have now been to the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse ("SGMP") twice.  On 1/7/12, we attended a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony (having been given free admission by one of the singers, who was authorized to do so).  On 2/19/12, my wife and I attended the Carmelite Sisters in Concert (having entered and won a contest for two free tickets).  Neither the foregoing nor anything else has been or will be given to me in exchange for this review.

I found the SGMP to be a very beautiful and charming venue.  It has the look and feel of a historic building from an earlier era of California history.  It is located in a neighborhood of buildings with a similar look and feel, adding to the atmosphere.  The playhouse itself appeared to be clean and well-maintained.  Our seats were comfortable and we were able to hear everything well enough.  We were readily able to find free parking nearby.  My only warning is that if you are tall, watch that you don't bump your head when you descend the stairway to the restroom.  Like many historic buildings, it was designed at a time when percentage-wise there were substantially fewer taller people than there are today.

    I highly recommend this venue.

I went to the San Gabriel Palyhouse for the first time on Saturday night to see the performance of Viva Cristo Rey. I thought it was an awesome play, not just because my Tio Victor Lopez( who played the General of Mexico) was in it. However, the playhouse history and design was perfect for the plays time period. I would recommend my friends to visit the San Gabriel Playhouse. Let me also add that the Mission symbolized a sense of a small community with restaurants and law offices in the vecinity. I was mesmerized!

Beautiful historic venue. From the painted ceiling to the friendly staff, a great place to see an event!

We saw the Wurlitzer organ in action. We are so lucky to have such a wonderful instrument right here in the city of San Gabriel.

If you have an opportunity to visit here you should definitely attend.

Very cool church.  Please visit the old church when you get the chance.  This old
Church dates back to the 1500s.  Very interesting to learn about the humble beginnings of this church in the city of San Gabriel.  There is a outdoor shrine that displays several prominent past pastors who are in the process of being considered for sainthood.  This place is a great place to go to meditate and connect with God.

Surprisingly the venue is well maintained and beautiful decorated inside. The sound and lights systems are awesome too,  I really enjoyed the performance held there last night.  Will go back if there is any good performance.  The parking is only $5 for that performance, don't know if it is a usual price.  Street parking is also available if you don't mind workinig a few blocks.

Probably the best theater in the SGV area? I've been here countless of times for school, mom's dance group, shows, etc. I've been front stage, backstage, dressing rooms, basement, attic, and probably any other room you can name. Not only is the inside very clean and well kept, the outside of the playhouse is very nice. I've even taken my prom pictures right in front of the playhouse because of the fountain and the "old-styled" structures.

If you looking at this from a performing group's point of view, the playhouse workers are very experienced, the dressing rooms (2nd floor ones) are very nice, and the stage is quite big.

If you're looking at this from a spectator or audience's point of view, the chairs are very comfy and the overall atmosphere is almost like a movie theater.

I would completely recommend this place to both types of people.

The Mission Playhouse is a hidden Jewel in the heart of San Gabriel. If you don't come for the shows, at least go inside and check out all the awesome architecture and colors. :)

Gorgeous theater and definitely worth going to an event there.

I just got back from their Wurlitzia program that had different musicians playing the Playhouse's restored Wurlitzer Organ and it was wonderful!. The best parts were the accompaniment to the Charlie Chaplin silent film and the Temple City High School Jazz Band (those kids are really good!).

The seats are even comfy, which you would expect from an older theater, but they are.

wow, lol like the two people  before me, I also used to compete here in high school for show choir. Amazing place, nice historical feeling, although sometimes it feels like it's gonna collapse any minute though :x  But nice place overall though (:

Used to compete here in high school for show choir competitions.

Very nice, old architecture with cool "private" boxes on the side of the auditorium.

Pretty place to be for the night, be it for a show or a ballet.

I used to perform here when I was in high school. It's your standard playhouse. Compared to other places, it doesn't have that much seating but it's a lovely place!

It was a magical evening. We lucked out with wonderful seats to watch Tchaikovsky's classic, "The Nutcracker." Although it was the abridged version, the performance was laudable, with lavish sets and costumes, and over 70 dancers from the Pasadena Dance Theater. With a vast number of them, child-performers...showing off their pointe work.

We arrived early enough to be able to steal a few shots of all the intricate details of this elaborate mission. We marveled at the old-world sights, the beauty of Spanish and Indian influences of the architecture.  Inside, genteel side boxes line against the walls of the auditorium. Perfect for couples! I could get into the history of how this mission once used to be a motion picture theater, but perhaps, I will save a history lesson for another review.

If you haven't watched the "Nutcracker," to watch it here is an alluring experience. However, if you find that you have missed this performance, attend the next event. It will satisfy both your desire to watch a performance, and to stroll through an enchanting venue; much like a museum.
If you are lucky to catch the show, you will love the scene where the Prince and Clara move through a whimsical winter wonderland, and into the kingdom of the sweets, where the sugar plum fairy honors the couple with entertainment from around the world. =)

This is a nice old school theater in a smaller scale located in the city of San Gabriel Mission district. Most patrons are locals and it showcase plays, dances, what have yous from local organization as well. On the inside the seats are due for an upgrade, there are nice wood carvings and paintings reminiscent of the 'South Americans'.
The first time I was there was to watch 'King and I' it was so so... then yesterday we watched 'Pinocchio' by Petit ballet which was pretty good.
