    More of a 3.5.

The place has two parts to the restaurant. One side is a cigar bar and the otherwise is the restaurant.

I went to the restaurant portion. The restaurant is dark inside when you first walk in. The inside felt like a rustic feel but at the same time it had an old tavern feel.

The menu is printed on a paper bag at the table which threw us off because we noticed writing on a paper bag but didn't really look at the bag closely. I ordered the pub steak which came with a choice of garlic mashed potatoes, French fries, or sweet potato fries. It is kind of a weird combination. On top of the steak came with sauteed onions and melted Gorgonzola cheese. The steak was mediocre but the stuff on top of the steak was good.  The mashed potatoes were not bad. They were very creamy which seemed like there was a lot of buttered used.   My friend ordered the special which was a pork chop with a mushroom demi glaze and a layer of Gorgonzola cheese. It looked pretty good. The food all together was pretty good. Not the most exceptional place to go.

The salad that came with the meal was a very basic salad nothing too special. We also got bread that came before the meal and homemade pickles. The pickles were really good. If you like store bought pickles you may not like these but I was a huge fan.

Overall the meal was alright. My bill came out to $28 with tip.

I wish I had been more impressed with this place, because several locals recommended it..... Or did they just say 'that's where a few other people went?'  I don't remember....

It wasn't bad food at all, but it was nothing special either.....  My steak was over cooked and over seasoned....

Been to many so called Steak Houses from the famous one in Brooklyn to various upscale in Manhattan.  Schlesinger's is by far one of the best there is (kudos to the staff). You want a good Steak come here, you wanna overpay for a garnish go somewhere else.

Only reason they don't get 5 Stars is because they are not in my neighborhood but if they were I'd be there every week!

Great food, never disappointed. However, for some reason, they are no longer open for lunch.
Lunch was the best deal around, with amazing food. I always took clients there.
They should reconsider opening for lunch very soon!

Want to have a nice dinner with the family and enjoy some of the best food in the Hudson Valley? Schlesinger's Steak House is the place to go.

Rather go out for a couple of drinks with the guys and maybe catch a game? Schlesinger's Steak House is the place for you.

Schlesinger's, also the owner of Happy Jacks Sports Bar, has a lot of experience in entertaining large crowds. It's almost an art form the way they create diverse yet equally entertaining and functional.
For instance the one of very few bars in New York state that allows smoking, the Cigar Bar.

Also, if your in the mood for some music and drinks, you can pop into the Elephant Bar to catch some talented musicians or join in and dance a little to some beats laid down buy a bunch of different local DJ's.

Not to mention when it gets a bit warmer outside, theres always The Beach at Schlesinger's Grab a drink at the tiki bar,and enjoy dancing or even just listening while you have a few drinks on the beach. Either way the DJ's and live performers keep the mood right while you enjoy the night!

Food was admittedly good (but not amazing). The issues there is it 1) charges like an upscale steak house when it's atmosphere is slightly above a neighborhood pub house 2) service is not up to par for a group of ten (forgotten salads, etc.)  3) the food is just not at that "next level" (french onion soup way too salty).  Overall, a very nice place to go...but there are much better places to eat for the money.  Not a romantic place as the people there are dressed everywhere from t-shirts to open collar/jacket and the music from the club penetrates the dining area with a club beat that never stops.

Was at Schlesinger's today and left deeply satisfied. We had sirloin steak and ribs. Both very good. Service is friendly and nice. Would totally come back.

I have never been so disgusted at a restaurant in my life. Yes the food is great...but the service was more than horrible. My boyfriend threw me a surprise birthday party last weekend it began at 8pm. We had 14 people with us. The waiter rushed us through everything, was completely rude to all of my guests and myself included. It got to the point where no one was ALLOWED to mingle or chat. When it came time for cake my boyfriend and mom had stepped out he he ran after them to explain that we were wasting his time but not staying in our seats and take smoke breaks... I wish I said something to the owner, but when the owner came and asked how everything was no one answered. IF THAT ISN'T A RED FLAG I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS. I know that they are not inexpensive let alone a fast food restaurant so to have 14 people eat in less that two hours (because the waiter Andrew was about as subtle as a thunder storm trying to get us out) you should reconsider doing private parties....This restaurant used to be my favorite place to eat...guess I'm staying closer to the waterfront from now on. I hope the owner Neil takes this into consideration. I have never been treated so poorly at my own birthday party. Not to be a brat, but if you don't want a party of young adults later in the evening...don't book the party. As soon as dinner was over, we finished our drinks and left to a more friendly atmosphere. If I could say anything to the Andrew the horrible waiter I wouldn't know what else to do but slap him for how he treated my friends and family...thanks for that memory Andrew! Too bad you can't leave no stars.....

i went here last month after not going for years, no particular reason.... and the food was excellent. they do seem to be confused as to what type of place they want to be.....nice restaurant, bar, club, casual restaurant....   but you most likely will be able to find a spot where you are comfortable either way.  the drinks are small but i guess they can make you whatever you want for a price...    the weightier i had was terrible, he made myself and the person i was with feel awkward and uncomfortable which was strange and he was horrible anyway. he messed up drink orders, took a long time to get back to us, forgot several simple orders/requests. other than the service being bad that day (was not very busy at the time, early on a friday), the place and food were great and i will go back again just avoid having the same person...kevin was his name i think.

Mediocre. This place cannot decide what it wants to be. A fancy steakhouse? A family chicken and rib place? A hamburger joint? A nightclub? a great 250 yr old house, could be great. We went there for myhusband's birthday because we had wanted to go there for years due to its reputation. Lousy atmosphere, overpriced steaks. They only have 2 prime steaks and were out of the t-bone when we were there so we had to get the porterhouse, at more money. Flavorful but chewy, a disappointment. Main house is charming -  addition is tacky. "Beach"bar out back looks interesting as the cigar bar.  $160 , shared appetizer, no dessert or cocktails and a cheap bottle of wine.

I like my steak medium-rare and after many, many disappointing steakhouse visits, I was SURE that Schlesinger's would serve me the perfect steak.  Boy, was I wrong.  My mother and I both ordered medium-rare filet mignon and we could not have had more different steaks.  Hers actually was a touch more rare than medium-rare and mine barely had ANY pink in it.  By the time our waitress came over to check on our food, I had choked down half of the steak and felt bad asking for anything else.  The rest of the meal was fine (server was nice, salad was fine, sides were fine, and the meat would have been fine if they had cooked it properly), but only fine - and definitely not worth what we paid.  As bad as it sounds, I've had much better (and cheaper) dining experiences at Outback.  I hope this was just a bad night or a bad chef, but I won't be returning to find out whether or not that's the case.

    Top notch food!!!

But what really makes this place stand out is the terrific service.  In a time when you'll find hostess's on their cellphones, this place is a God send.

Their salads really stand out, I'd never send the plate away unfinished.  The sides are unbelieveable and the entrees indulgent.  The ribs were very good but not the best I've ever had.

They have a cool cigar lounge/bar area if you like to smoke, which I think is cool.

This place is worth every penny and the outdoor patio in the summertime sounds like a must!

Always great service to go with the great food. Smoking in the front bar by the cigar shop, just like the bad ol' days.

This gets 10 stars!  I'm from Brooklyn NY...stayed in New Windsor over night for a training.  Schlesinger's served THE BEST steak I had ever had in my life.  My husband and I were in heaven.  The drive was about an hour and a half-two hours (can't remember exactly)...we're so looking forward to driving back just for dinner one of these days.  Like butter!  Whatever the price was...it was WORTH IT!

I can't believe they call this a steakhouse. It's terrible. My friend had a steak and said it didn't taste fresh. She eats a lot of steak, so I trust her opinion. The half chicken was dried out. The only plus is a server named Robert, he does his best to serve terrible food with a smile. The owner does greets you with a growl. The restaurant needs a refurb. This restaurant is overrated.

Fresh fish, serious steaks.  Main dining room yes, groups in front dining room no.

And yes, there is a cigar shop next door through the bar where you can buy and smoke a cigar.  If you will...............................

This is easily one of my new favorites! A fancy steak restaurant, with a really fun atmosphere!  I had a sirloin & baked potato, and my boyfriend had a filet & garlic mashed.  Along with sharing a side salad & a bowl of new england clam chowder, it was all delicious!  Fair prices.  I know some people find it a little weird, the menus are printed on a brown paper bag.  But as a designer I found this idea to be genius!  Along with that and the pickles delivered to your table when you sit down, it creates a nice, simple, family-like feel to the place, it's not the "stuffy" feeling you get at most fancy restaurants.

Love this place. I eat here once or twice a month. Lunch is awesome. The steak at lunch is delicious tender juicy and it has an awesome price. You will not be disappointed.

Visited this place for the second time and the food was just as good as I remember the last time I visited.  There is ample parking but the dinning room does seem small for such a large facility.  They have a main dining area as well as a smaller back-up dinning area.

The menu is on a garbage bag, I mean dogie bag paper bag.  I thought for a pricey establishment like this place that they would have a better looking menu.  It is pricey with steaks ranging from $25-$45.  Lighting is dim and they do have windows but the blinds were kept closed because the appearance of the yard and woods out back were not eye appealing.  The facility is clean and though they do have a cigar shop you don't smell smoke while eating but you may smell the smoke as you enter but don't let that turn you away.

Food is really good, I'm definitely a fan, but it's not the very best I've had so I can't give this place five stars.  For some reason they put a jar of pickles on your table and though I didn't eat any I did wonder if they would recycle the jar for other customers which would be gross but I just don't know how that works so I passed on the pickles.

after eating steaks at many, many places im gonna have to give this just an ok.  yes they have a cigar bar, but i want to eat steak. i can go to a smoke shoppe and get own cigars. as for the steak, it was tremendously average. i can't remember what else i had, but the steak was blah.  not horrible by any standard, but not worth what your paying.  any and every day of the week i would rather drive the same time (40 mins) to go to mr. lugers and pay a little more.  i guess if your from the oc, this place is good. i am not from the oc though, and will never eat here again.

I was a little nervous first walking in this place because they have a cigar bar on one side of the building.  Do not let this keep you away, this is an A+ steakhouse.  We both ordered the 12 (!)  ounce filet mignon.  Perfectly cooked and it comes with Schlesinger's House Salad that wonderful.  They bring you a mason jar of half sour pickles when you first sit down.  All steaks are aged 'in house'.  Recommended.

OK. Honestly; this place is NOT that good. Food is Waaaaaaaaay over priced for the quality. If it is steak you are after; go Longhorn! Hell, go Outback for that matter! the steak you can get at other places for 1/2 the price are much better than this place.
I honestly cannot fathom the taste buds of the people touting these Steaks as the best they have Had. Peter Luger's this is NOT! This place is a total dump.

I used to live up the street from this place, but I only came here a few times and I really enjoyed it each time.  Place looked nice enough, like someone's old house with lots of wood-paneling.  Last time I had the french onion soup and a sirloin steak.  The onion soup had lots of flavor, mashed potatoes were also great, and although it doesn't exactly take a rocket scientist to make a sirloin steak, I will say it takes considerable skill to make a good one and these guys have it.  I may not have been here for years, but I really enjoyed what I had and I want to go back sometime in the future!

A great steakhouse located on a well-traveled stretch of road in New Windsor. Schlesinger's has been around forever, and with good reason: they consistently serve up good food in a classy and comfortable atmosphere.

Located in a restored old house, Schlesinger's radiates an atmosphere of warmth and charm. I love going to restaurants like this, especially at this time of year. They feel cozy, and who doesn't like to eat good food and feel all table-by-the-fireside in the fall?

Some of their best touches are the small ones. Each meal begins with the waitress bringing bread and a jar of pickles to the table. The pickles arrive in a glass jar and I believe that they are made on the premises. The bread selection consists of rolls and slices of raisin bread that are served warm. The menus are printed on brown paper bags and are kept table side. It's a nice touch.

Each entree comes complete with a salad - you can choose house or Caesar, and the Caesar is very good. The entrees themselves are what make Schlesinger's a place that people tend to return to again and again. They are quite good and are prepared with care. Some expert dishes include the baby back ribs; the BBQ chicken and the grilled chicken - you have a choice of a half chicken or a whole chicken; and the penne pasta, which comes plain or with a choice of chicken, shrimp or salmon. The shrimp gives it a nice flavor, the chicken isn't bad either and it's pretty good plain as well. I've never had it with salmon, but who knows? It's Schlesinger's, so it's bound to be good.

If you get an entree that includes steak or chicken, be sure to get a side of rocky mountain mashed potatoes with your meal. They're terrific, and despite repeated pleas from customers, Schlesinger's will not make the recipe publicly available. They're that good and are a closely guarded secret. In addition, if you order half of a grilled chicken - this especially applies if you're ordering takeout - please be sure that they understand that you want GRILLED chicken, not the GRILL chicken. This is also on the menu and is basically chicken with peppers and onions. Once when ordering takeout I received this particular dish instead of the grilled chicken I'd asked for, and while it wasn't bad, it wasn't what I was in the mood for either. The moral of this story is to make sure that the staff understands exactly what you want. But overall this shouldn't be too much of a problem, because the staff is pretty efficient, and some of them have worked there for years. Throw in the fact that Mr. Schlesinger, the owner, acts as the seating host and keeps vigilant watch over the dining room, and you shouldn't have too much of a problem with anything. The place is run extraordinarily well, and is one of the few restaurants I've been to where  the staff really is professional and at the top of their game.

For those who are so inclined, end your evening with a trip next door to Hudson Valley Cigars, a small cigar store which is literally attached to Schlesinger's. You can walk into the cigar bar through a door that also opens out into Schlesigner's vestibule. Pretty cool indeed.

This steak house is fabulous.  The steaks are aged in house  and everything is fresh and delicious.  The ambiance is very unique, set in an old house in an easy to get to location, when you enter the door you feel as if you are stepping back in time.  The low lighting and dark wood are very cozy and welcoming.  Monday nights have a great BBQ deal and the weekends a jammin at the outdoor music venue "The Beach."

I came to Schlesinger's looking for a great steak.  Being from Texas, I know what a good steak should taste like.  Upon ordering, I thought to myself, this place looks pretty good, I'll order the $35 porterhouse steak (YUM!).  Boy was that a bad decision.  If you enjoy a great piece of meat that tastes like rubber, this place is for you!  What a waste of a good piece of mooey goodness.  I only recommend this place for the wings.  The wings were awesome!  Don't bother with this place for steaks though!
