Shallos was SO much fun and such a great place to have a few brews and relax with friends. They have over 500 varieties from all over the world, and I didn't think the price was too bad in comparison to other places either! Our waitress was great as well. With so many choices, we had no clue where to begin so we each told her a couple beers we liked and she would recommend something similar we hadn't had before. She never failed us!! I will for sure be back :)
Review Source:The food is pretty darn good, especially the panko breaded tenderloin. Get it with a side of the "swamp sauce", a Caribbean style sauce with a gingery kick. The beer selection is large, yes, but I am not usually wowed. This last visit, they didn't even have an Indiana beer on tap and only two breweries were represented by bottles. No 3 Floyds, no Fountain Square, no Sun King, no New Albanian. Only bottles of Flat 12 and Triton.
The restaurant interior is gorgeous and welcoming. Very cozy and pub-y.
Oh Christmas Beer
Oh Christmas Beer
Oh how I love you, Christmas Beer!
Though we started out with a couple of draft selections (mmm, Youngs Double Chocolate Stout...), we ended up working our way through four different bottles of Christmas/Winter beer, and could have tried four or five more options had we stayed longer and/or had a DD to get us back to our house. Â That, combined with a basket of the homemade chips and dip and excellent service from the bartender, made for an excellent impromptu night out in Greenwood!
If you like beer or want to like beer, you need to try Shallo's. The food is traditional pub food. It's good, not bad, but the beer is the reason for coming. Over 100 beers (probably more), the most on tap I have seen yet, and a variety to be rivaled. Porters and Stouts you would never see anywhere else, ciders you've never heard of, and combinations you would never imagine. Ask for the menu and try a different beer each time you visit.
The atmosphere is class wood and brass with seating available at tables and at the rail. The rail is for regulars, so don't expect much conversation unless you're asking a specific question about the beer. The French Onion soup is the shiz and goes nicely with a simple house salad. Cold, crisp, big pieces of crunchy lettuce with the right amount of toppings.
This is one place we like to take friends and family when they visit and want to go somewhere local. Children and family are invited!
This is just regarding their beer, did not eat although would return for those yummy looking pub chips.
As a Colorado beer snob I was very impressed with their beer selection. For a chain restaurant part of town, this place is a beer lovers heaven. Not a huge, but at least 20 taps with diverse pours from various places. And the bottle list has great stuff including seasonally available brews.
Only thing that got it 4 stars was the bar staff. Kind of waited to be helped, but it was a Friday night... Would probably become better in my opinion the more I go there, and I plan to.
Shallos claim to fame is the incredible beer selection. Â Â
Service is usually so-so. Â It's not terrible but there isn't anything stellar about it either. Â
I haven't had a lot on their menu but what I have tried is pretty solid. Â They have great (amazing) homemade chips with a Parmesan ranch dip. Â The 1/2 order size is monstrous - I can't imagine what the full size would be! Â Â The hot brown is a delicious a open faced turkey sandwich, with bacon and cheese.
Always a good stand by for some good pub food. Probably the best selection of beer in all of Indy! As a previous writer noted: one of the very few places that will cook a burger to your satisfaction such as med. rare. I have eaten there for years and NEVER had a problem with bad food or getting sick. My experience over the years: good food, good service, great selection of beer!
Review Source:Never again. Â On May 9, 2012 I ate at Shallos, ordering a cheeseburger cooked medium rare. Â Shallos is one of the only places in town that will cook a burger this way. Â About 30 hours later (standard incubation time for salmonella) I had a horrible case of food poisoning, the first 12 hours of which can only be called torture. Â For legal reasons, I am not saying Shallos caused my food poisoning, but I am saying that 30 hours after eating a cheeseburger there, and having eaten nothing but prepackaged food in the interim, I was sicker than I have ever been in my life.
I looked up Shallos at the county health site (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fmchd.com&s=e13b95883f245fa1fd81ddc5a317296594de5245b6a0bf9a9717a1052498f869" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://mchd.com</a>) and they have an ongoing problem storing food correctly - these are CRITICAL findings from recent health inspection reports:

Same critical findings as 3/19/2012; corrected.
Great Atmosphere! Â I came here recently with a group of friends for dinner.. Â Needless to say, I was thoroughly impressed with long selection of GREAT beer. Â They offer draught and bottles of worldly variety; in the end I went with the Altech Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale and what a fine choice it was! Â The food was quite tasty and well suited; think of glorified pub fare. Â We sampled the house chips which were fantastic. Â For a main, I went with the BBQ Pork Chops and was very happy with it. We were seated upstairs, which seemed sort of cramped, but enjoyable non-the less. Â And this place is non-somking - a huge plus!
I would like to come back down with some aficionados and hang at the bar sipping on great beer. Â If only there was a location in Broad Ripple...but seriously. Â I think I'll find myself here again when heading to the South-Side.
I just moved to the Indy area a few months ago, and I was looking around online for bars/restaurants. I saw Shallos and thought WOW 500 different kinds of beer! I'm a beer connoisseur! It was everything I was wanting it to be! A little on the pricey side, but I can deal with that! Haven't had the food there yet, but It looks good!
Review Source:Don't let the "strip mall" exterior fool you...you'll walk in and feel like you have entered an English pub. Great decor -- tons of Indianapolis' memorabilia that is fun to check out. The beer selection is unmatched at any other Indy bar. And the food is great -- but it's the homemade chips that are the most addictive (and totally healthy, I'm sure!). Great place - a hidden treasure.
Review Source:A group of my friends in town for the holidays joined the gf and me at Shallos for an after dinner drink. Â I was very happy to see that Shallos was still open and at the same location after all of these years and a piss poor economy. Â Many evenings during my college years were spent enjoying beers at Shallos which, in my mind, was the foremost place for beer, bottled or on tap, on the Southside if not all of Indy. Â Thankfully, not much has changed at Shallos except that it has kept up with the times and has kept up with the proliferation of craft beers from America's best microbrewers to include some of the Hoosier States' finest. Â Their selection of domestic, imports, and microbrews that can be had by the bottle or draft numbers in the hundreds! Â
Supporting a local (sort of) brewer, I started off with a draft pint of Three Floyds Brewing's Alpha King Pale Ale from Munster, IN. Â Not to sound like a "homer", but the amber brew knocked it out of the park offering a citrusy nose and a pleasing, crisp hoppiness as it was consumed. Â Alpha King was definitely a winner! Â My second selection was a pint of Tyranena Bitter Woman IPA from Wisconsin. Â I'm a big fan of IPAs, but the Bitter Woman was surprisingly bland, lacking the intense hoppiness usually found in that type of beer, and was a disappointment. Â Both pints of beer were extremely reasonable in price around $5. Â In the end, the evening was a fun trip down beer memory lane.
Shallos isn't a cocktail joint. Â It isn't a fine dining restaurant. Â However, it still has to be considered one of Indy's best beer establishments. Â If you love beer, you're on the Southside, and you want to get good value for your money, then Shallos is a must!
Food is just okay, beer selection impressive. Â I have vowed to never return due to a horrible customer service experience. Â Went out for a few beers with a couple friends during a non-peak time (we were the only ones in our section), waited over 20 minutes for any service, then waited over 20 minutes for our drinks. Â Sat with empty beers for over 20 minutes and had to go up to bar to ask our waitress who was chatting with the bartender for our check, which we waited at least another 15 minutes for. Â This is the only time in my entire life I have not left a tip. Â I just did not enjoy it enough to give it another shot...
Review Source:I don't know how many lists I've started over the last 10 years in an attempt to get my name on the wall, but I've lost every one.
Shallo's has one of the largest beer selections in the midwest, and that's totally boss. The beer menu is vast and inspiring. If you like beer, you'll like Shallo's. If you like beer and don't like Shallo's, you're probably a twerp.
I remember the first time I went there, my friend Justin said 'try the cheeseburger! it's better than it has any right to be!'. And it IS! It is unexplainably good. Also of note are the chicken nachos. Instead of a heap of chips covered in toppings, each chip is lovingly dressed so that each corny triangle is perfectly loaded and flavor packed.
I will say that though the beer selection is awesome-sauce, the drinks at the bar are pretty weak-sauce.
The best Bar in Indy!
Want a specialty Beer? They got it! If they dont ask and they will get it. Join their club, drink beers and become famous when the post your name on the wall. They have a great Atmosphere, The two story bar has a very cool theme with old signs and dark stained wood. Food, well they have good food too... you must try the chips and dip... the French Onion soup is a must try as well!
Shallos, YOU ROCK!!!
This is *the* place to go for drinks in Greenwood. The beer list is mind-blowing and the prices are reasonable.
The menu is typical bar food. The nachos are good and I really like the buffalo chicken sandwich.
And if you discover you've had one too many beers you can go next door to Old Time Pottery and buy a bunch of stuff you probably don't need buy you'll impulse buy because of the cheap prices.
I'm slowly but surely working to get my name on the wall... one beer at a time.
Never a bad experience, but maybe because the bartenders are engaging and the food is tasty and fast. The atmosphere can't be beat - always something to look at and a secret passage to sneak through. (shhhh) Did I mention the ginormous beer selection?
If you haven't been, go!
Yes, it is located in a strip mall, but so what the selection is phenomenal. I don't care for their food, or even sitting anywhere in the restaurant for that matter, but the beer selection is fantastic, and the reason for the 4 stars. Â I was in search for a place that had Lexington Brewing Bourbon Barrel Ale on draft, and sure enough, they had it.
This is the place I like to visit when I want to splurge on something a little different, which you definitely pay a premium for, so I typically just have one or two when I stop by.
The selection of beers is pretty good, but the price is a bit high. Â I think one pint was $7. The food is mostly pub-style and its pretty tasty. Â The server was great for my table, but had some entree mixups with every table around us. Â Overall, the whole experience was a little meh. Â I don't regret going, but probably won't return for some time.
Review Source:I've only been here once and it was just for drinks. Bases off of that, I do recommend stopping in and taking a look around. It's a pretty neat building since on the outside it just looks like a strip mall restaurant. They have quite the beer selection, both draft and bottles. I've been told that their beer list is not always completely accurate, so if you're looking for a special beer, ask the bartender and see. There's probably a good chance they have it.
The other nice part is it's located next to Old Time Pottery.
I will definitely be back here for more delicious beer and to try out some of the food.
This place has a great beer selection. Â I recommend sitting at the bar and getting to know Doug so you'll always know what's on tap! Â They usually have great specials on some of the seasonal beers and have many hard to find options. Â The prices can get a little crazy but don't feel weird asking your server how much a brew will cost - they don't have a problem letting you know if that pint is going to be upwards of $8 for some of the crazier limited edition beers they get in!
I recommend sticking to anything with swamp sauce or the buffalo wings. Â The food is fried and traditional bar food but at least the place is non-smoking and you know what you're going to get when you order it!
This review is for the beer only.
We were recently in search of some Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale from Lexington Brewing Company on draft and we heard Shallos had it. Â Sure enough, they did, and it was great. Â I only gave four stars instead of five because of the price. Â Now, I'm a big fan of craft beer and I know it's not cheap, but in comparison to similar places, they seem to be just a tad high.
Shallos has some really cool old signage and other antiques so don't forget to take a look around. Â You can watch TV at any old bar.
Brew-ha-ha.
Brewhouses are my second favorite thing on Earth, micro breweries being the first. Â And as a brewhouse, shallo's is at the top of the key. Â They've got about 340 or so beers at any given time. Â Holy damn. Â Seriously, what else do you need?
Sure, the food isn't the most fantastic stuff, but it's standard bar food, and it does a good job of that. Â I had a club and it was a club, the mozzarella sticks were pretty decent too! Â Now, onto the important stuff, the brew. Â
For the second time, Holy Damn. Â On my first I stuck to Indiana beers, specifically two fine beverages from Flat12 Bierworks, which is located in downtown Indy (it's on my list, can't wait to go!). Â The 'glazed ham porter' was fantastic. Â But that's neither here nor there in regards to shallo's. Â I'm excessively excited that there's a place so near to me with such an awesome selection of quality and diverse brew!!!!
The decor holds to the 'Antique' portion of the description. Â It's comprised mostly of wood and neon, which appeals to my rather tacky, yet crude tastes. Â The bar is the classic old wood look. Â Very enjoyable. Â
Service has been so-so both times I've been here. Â I think Shallo's would really benefit from a reboot service side of things. Â Not firings of course, but maybe some more focus on that.
Definitely recommended to any serious beer fans on the Southside, or those dedicated enough to make the drive.
If you are a lover of beer, go here. The food is fine, pretty typical pub/bar fare, I'm partial to the swamp chicken nachos...but you should be going here to drink hard-to-find beers. It's all SMOKE FREE...awesome! I like looking at all the memorabilia. Although the location is in a strip mall (next to Old Time Pottery), the interior is incredible. Two stories of dark wood paneling with a tin-tiled ceiling and historic relics hanging all over the place. There's a nice mix of tables and U-shaped booths, as well as bar seating. Kids are allowed, and they have a pretty decent kids menu. There are two items here (besides the swamp marinade) that you don't find at many other places in central Indiana: a gargantuan twice-baked potato with ham (excessive, but perfect for 2 to share) and the hot brown (a KY thing).
Sometimes, we've had trouble getting seated. Sometimes we've had service by servers who were downright slow, but tonight was just great. Another annoyance is that the beer list tends to be incredibly out of date, which can make it VERY hard to order your drink, when the server has to go back and forth from table to bar to find out "we're out of that". I love that the music isn't loud and there aren't 20,000 TVs all over. It's more of a "sit and talk with your mates over a pint" type of place. I think we've gone here 4-5 times in the past 12 months...one of the few things that makes a trek into Greenwood worthwhile.
My fiance and I come here often but we have very mixed reviews. Â He comes for the beer and because of their HUGE selection to choose from - many of which you can not find on draft or even in a bottle anywhere else, he loves it! Â His favorite are the Hacker Pschorr, New Belgium Trippel, and especially the Duvel. They are available at the liquor store for about 1/3 of the price but you get the atmosphere here. Â Always games you can watch on their multiple tvs.
My tip is if there is a wait, to eat in the bar so you don't have to be on the waiting list. Â put your name in anyways though just in case. Â This place is always busy when we come. Â
The onion rings are delicious! Â Their breaded pork tenderloin looks good too but i've never tried it. Â The homemade chips and dip are good too. The steak, not so much. Unless you are really craving it stick to the bar food. Â
The atmosphere is pretty interesting with draft heads all over the place, antiques and an upstairs eating area that you can look down into the bar. Â
My favorite part of this place is that it is connected to Old Time Pottery so if I come here I get to go there... Most beer loving guys I know love this place. Â Their girlfriends never complain for the same reason - to get to go to the OTP. not a bad compromise because we can leave our loved ones at the restaurant and they don't complain how long we stay in the OTP :)
In town visiting friends and family and needed a good beer bar to visit while in town. My brother reccomended this place.
When we first pulled up to this place, nearly hidden in a half empty strip mall, I was a bit unsure whether this was a hidden gem or just a hole in the wall. The atmoshpere was quite warm and inviting. Lots of dark wood with empty beer bottles and tap handles lining the walls.
We sat at the bar, so the service seemed pretty good. We never found ourselves with an empty glass without being asked if we were ready for another round. The bartender seemed fairly knowlegable about the 40 or so beers they had on tap. The only downside was that the bartender seemed to struggle with a good pour, I think as much beer was overflow as made it into our glasses.
The selection is terrific. Like I mentioned before there are around 40 beers on tap, and many times more than that in bottles.
The prices seemed to be on par with most other places, and they had several beers on "special" for around $3.50 a pint. Overall a good place, I will probably visit again when I am in Indy next.
Beer is delicious.
A place in Greenwood I wouldn't mind spending an extra hour at... where-o-where would that be...? Shallo's, no doubt.
The entire place is smoke-free, which makes it mighty child friendly.
Chalk another one up for a host wanting to seat us in the middle of the room. This neurotic wallflower needs his back to the wall, and nowhere near a ledge.
They need some ragtime jazz going over the speakers... it's just too stale. Oh, what's that? Is that stale dried beer all over our beer menu? A beer menu that is nowhere near up to date, which creates a byzantine of a beer order session. I was going to give this visit 3 stars until I remembered the waitress brought 4 beer tasters without asking because they were out of everything we inquired about. So, 4 stars.
Dogfish Head 60 on draft, a mighty clean tap, in a mighty sexy glass.
The homemade chips are worth the $1.75 upgrade... however they were a bit greasy this go 'round. A house salad that is a house salad... at least a hearty size. The swamp chicken sandwich was experiencing shrinkage on this visit. It's smaller. Much smaller than 2 years ago. Not as much flavor either really.
My partner & I just sort of peered deep into that menu to try to find an appetizer item that wasn't deep fried; no luck...
Wants were different than realities there...
The truth... every visit where I've sat at the bar I've loved; and, every visit not at the bar (upstairs or bar table) I've been pretty tepid about.
Having said that... again, beer is delicious.
Shallo's, I am disappoint. Seriously, the suckiest waitress I've had in years. She didn't know the menu or beer list, it took her 30 minutes to realize I was out of beer. She got angry when some of us switched seats and told us not to do it anymore because the computer couldn't keep track of our bill. Just awful, they're lucky they've got an awesome beer selection. Seriously, hundreds of beers to choose from. Though, the beer menu is a cheap xerox missing the first few letters off the names of all the beers on the left side. If you have questions about the beer don't waste your time asking the wait staff, with a few exceptions they generally don't know anything about the beers they carry.
I would also say that the food is pretty sub standard, unless you're a deep fried aficionado. The chips aren't bad, but everything else is mediocre at best.
Great atmosphere. Great food.
I highly recommend the swamp tenderloin, but especially their wings. Great stuff.
Their wings are huge first of all. Not those small puny wing bones with a little meat on them. No, I mean they give you wings. The whole thing. And they are great. They are smothered in amazing sauce, I recommend the hot not mild, and you feel like a carnivore when eating them. They are so good.
Their swamp tenderloin and swamp burger are delicious as well. A Caribbean jerk tasty sauce makes everything better.
You can't forget their homemade chips. Those are also very tasty.
If beer is your thing, then Shallos is the place to go. They have so many different types of beer they have it stored all around the restaurant.
Pretty great establishment through and through. It really livens up when there are big games on TV, too. The place is full of antiques from around Indy. Probably one of my favorite restaurants for sure.
Best selection of beers (draft and bottle) that I've found in Indianapolis. Â Food is Midwestern bar food and is very good an much of it is homemade. Â Homemade potato chips as a appetizer is a must (send them back if they aren't warm), burgers are good, breaded tenderloin is excellent, and the steaks are very good cuts.
Review Source:DO NOT GO HERE FOR THE FOOD!!!!!
Shallo's has your typical deep-fried bar food. Â Their home-made chips are great, but that's about it. Â
GO HERE FOR THE BEER!!!
You want variety? Â They have it! Â The boast over 500 different beers throughout the year. Â Included in that is domestic junk, but you still can get just about anything you can dream of here. Â It's a very crowded, cramped place and can get very loud during the weekends. Â The service is often slow, but that's what you get when you go to a bar to eat. Â This is not a good family restaurant, nor a good place to take a date (unless you and that date just want to get plastered). Â It is also very pricey. Â However, anyplace that has Arrogant Bastard on tap will get my approval.
I went to Shallos with my boyfriend, who loves their beer selection, because I could only talk him into going to next-door Old Time Pottery if we went here too. A good compromise, one would hope. Unfortunately, we didn't have such a good experience here. Yes, they do have a great beer selection - over 300 bottled beers and 40 draft beers. The downside is that the menu simply lists all the beers and the only categorization offered is by country. So, if you are not an expert in beers or haven't done your research before going, you might not know what to order. The menu should include descriptions of the beers, or at the very least, the servers should be experts and know what to recommend. We wanted to try new and different beers, but weren't that happy with what we chose because of the lack of guidance. If you know what kind of beers you want to try before you go, then Shallos is a good choice. Do your research - the website lists them.
The food was not good at all. Unlike the beer list, the dinner menu didn't have much to choose from. I decided to order the Filet Mignon, but should have known better based on the price ($14?!). It  was bland and overcooked. I drowned it in A-1 sauce to try to salvage it, but that didn't help either. My boyfriend had a burger, which he thought was ok. Our service wasn't too great either. I will not be going back here.
