Too lazy to cook at home, so my wife and I came here on a quiet Wednesday night. We are new to the area so slowly trying to discover the hidden gems in the Shelby/Macomb area. The order of 8 wings was delicious, meaty wings in buffalo sauce. They were large wings and dipped in blue cheese, I could not have asked for better. The small meat lover's pizza was 4 heavenly slices of some of the best Detroit pizza I've had to date. I mean it was baked to perfection. Not too greasy. The toppings were flavorful and did not overpower the pizza with salt. The crust was fluffly on the inside, crispy with sharp corners on the outside.
Excellent pizza, very good wings, and good customer service. I highly recommend this Shield's. Who would have thought you could get some of the best Detroit pizza this far north from the city? Yum.
The pizza is sooo good at Shield's. Â It's that awesome Detroit style deep dish with the crunchy corners filled with saucy cheesy deliciousness. Â And it's not greasy, either. Â The handtossed rounds are pretty good, but square is really the way to go. Â The salads are always fresh and cold, but consist of iceberg lettuce rather than "fancier" romaines and such. Â The garlic bread is great, too - seems like if you get a salad with your pizza you get free bread (maybe 2 pcs for a small salad, 3-4 for a medium? Â I can't figure this special bread formula out). Â And the beer is cold, and it seems like they have good beer specials.
Here's the thing: Â you come here for the pizza, not for the service. Â It's never awesome. Â And it's a family place, so expect to see some sassy kids running around - eating at a table in the bar area is an easy remedy to that situation.
This place can get real busy at times. I'll keep this review short and sweet. Â Pizza was great. Steak tips were disgusting. Do not order the steak tips. Taco salad was good. Service Could have been better. Waitress didn't ask questions and was always in a hurry to move on.
Had I not ordered the steak tips I would have given this place a 4. The service could have been better but they were busy so its understandable.
Best deep dish around. The crust and toppings are excellent. Also give the antipasto salad a try. It's loaded with cheese and meat and the dressings is great. Cost more than your average pizza place but well worth it. The restaurant is nice too and there is a full menu with many other good alternatives to pizza.
Review Source:A couple of years ago I vowed to never eat deep dish pizza from anywhere but Jet's due to a growing disappointment with the quality of said pies in and around metro Detroit. Â After attending a family part at Shield's this past weekend, I have broken my vow! Â Holy crust! Â Just as thick as Jet's but not quite as greasy. Â I love greasy pizza as much as the next but seriously when you set a slice on a napkin and the paper dissolves immediately... Â Anyways, the sauce was not too acidic and slightly sweet. Â Also it was on top of the cheese the way it should be so as to ensure the thick crust cooks properly under the layers of delicious toppings. Â Let's talk about those toppings-fresh NOT canned mushrooms and the cheese tasted freshly grated and similar to the blend used at Loui's by the race track. Â Definitely not that processed barf blend passed off at the major chains. Â The pizza was preordered for the party and on the plain side as far as toppings go but after checking out their website am excited to try their specialty pizzas. Â
We started with antipasto salad which was excellent.  The produce was fresh and the dressing homemade.  The only complaint I had was that they didn't cut the lettuce or tomatoes small enough.  I hate getting a  1/2 head on my plate then having to awkward try to cut it up with a butter knife.  All things considered I think I may have a new favorite for deep dish. Â
I probably would not return to eat in due to the large number of unruly children and trailer park residents that visit this location. Â I serious as a heart attack saw a guy in cut off sweat pants and NO SHOES standing in the foyer waiting to be seated with his 5 unwashed Kool aid moustache kiddos when I was leaving. Â This was, of course, a hilarious spectacle but I sure as hell wouldn't want to be seated next to that carnival-o-hepatitis. Â This in no way reflects on the restaurant or food, however, and I will gladly drive the 25 minutes for this pizza from now on.
I love eating here! Â The best part is indulging into their warm crispy cheese bread appetizer...it is flawless. Â I came here with my boyfriend and his family over the weekend, and it was our second time eating at this fairly new location. The place was super busy yet our waitress didn't miss a beat. Â For that reason I felt this particular Shield's deserved a yelping. Â Now, I'm not the biggest fan of deep dish style, but my usual order is a small Pepperoni Prize which consists of four irresistibly yummy square slices of cheese and pepperoni pizza for $8.25. Â The only downfall for me is if I Â try to eat more than one slice then tums will be my dessert! Â Since I already had my cheese bread fix I didn't want to overdue it, Â so I ordered a tuna melt instead. Â My sandwich was huge and the tuna tasted fresh with warm swiss cheese on top. Â I like that even though pizza is clearly the specialty you can still order a good burger or sandwich here too. Â Shield's also offers free refills on beverages, and not too many places still do that. Â I also think they offer good beer and mixed drink specials. This is a good place to watch a game. Â At least you will have greasy delicious food and reasonably priced draft beer. Â Oh and you can play Club Keno...need I say more!
