This was the only shrimp truck we went to and it lived up to the hype. The spicy shrimp was just wonderful, the owner was really nice and worked hard and there was ample outdoor seating right across from the ocean.
If I moved to the area and opened a shrimp truck, I would be the only truck in town to peel the shrimp beforehand, which would make the experience perfect.
BEST Shrimp on da Island!!I  I live in Honolulu and I make a trip to the other end of  da island almost every weekend!
ALL the food, (especially the spicy, garlic, shrimp), is so FRESH and delicious!
You get HUGE portions for such a great price!

SHRIMP SHACK = ALOHA!!
Authentic local aloha! The charisma and charm of this artistic yellow food truck is only bypassed by its amazing shrimp it serves and the outstanding customer service! The pan fried garlic shrimp are cooked to perfection. It's no surprise that they have been featured on the food network! Â Highly recommend...be sure to order a side of the fresh corn on the cob!
Review Source:Again, another place where I am not sure why the high marks.
It was average, not bad but nothing special.
I guess if you are making the drive around the northern shore, there isnt much to choose from, and you are bound to get hungry :-)
I would stop again and eat here but I just dont think its a 5 star restaurant.
Bonnie is quite a bundle of energy. She provided us with high energy customer service. Our visit to the Shrimp Shack was pretty lively. We were vacationing in Oahu, had heard about The Shrimp Shack from Yelp and travel magazines, and decided to pop in for lunch. We had a great time. We also enjoyed the Kona Iceberg for desert, a Kona Coffee ice cream float, which was quite delicious; and the coffee was tasty and strong. Â Also, when we arrived it was in a middle of a rain storm; here we thought we would eat in our car...but Bonnie gladly welcomed us inside what appeared to be a roomy pantry? Â we didn't mind : ) Â Lastly, Bonnie gave us great tips for our souvenir shopping -- Longs Drugs, yep that's where we went for Kona Coffee, nuts and chocolate.
Review Source:Sooooo Good!!!. The service can be slow at times but well worth it. Every time I have had it the shrimp were perfect. Â Garlic shrimp had great flavor. Â Also the shrimp here is properly cleaned unlike the other popular White shrimp truck! Â If you are heading to the north shore check this place out. Â It will not be super packed and busy and has a great vibe. Â The convenience store next door is great as you can grab something to go with your food.
Review Source:Heard so much about the shrimp shack so we just had to stop. Stopped there twice on our trip. First time there was a lady by the name of "Mama Roxy" all tho she tried to be friendly she came off a bit rude when she asked us if we wanted corn we didn't answer the first time and she asked again we said no and I guess she didn't hear but she asked a third time saying you want the corn or what. I felt a little forced so I agreed. The corn was actually to my liking. We also ordered the pan fried shrimp which was really delicious & the cook whipped it up really fast, we waited like 3 minutes (: the second time was a spunky blonde who was very friendly and talkative. She talked up the crab cakes so we ordered some along with the steak & coconut shrimp. We waited VERY long this time for our food and the steak tasted WAY to peppery and the crab cakes she talked so much about was ehh. The only thing good this time was the coconut shrimp. And the cashier talked so much with me I hadn't noticed until I left that she didn't even give me my change back! Ill rate this place 3 stars. Some of there items are really good but others not so much to my liking. And they are one of the more affordable shrimp trucks. You think $11 is expensive until you drive down the road for the same thing with less flavor for $13!
Review Source:Hubby and I were cruising around the entire island for our first time, and it got to be "time to eat" and of course we had no idea where we were exactly or what would be decent. We were heading west and saw signs for the Shrimp Shack up ahead, just as we thought, "did we pass it?" we then saw it! It's parked outside of a little market [perfect for purchasing a brown-bagged beverage]. The food sounded great and the woman (owner?) taking orders was extremely helpful in explaining the menu (not to me...rather the slowpokes in front of me. She even joked about it later "I was trying to read your brain to put your order in first..." ha ha) I got a split plate of Mahi Mahi and Coconut Shrimp w/rice - superb! Hubby ordered the Spicy Garlic Shrimp (as hot as they make it!) He was pleasantly surprised that the spice truly did make him pause--he makes sport out of finding truly spicy items, and this delivered! (You can get mild, etc if you prefer). Peel, eat, suck is the slogan here! It was a great experience. Very casual seating arrangement, but the sweetest older woman delivers your food to you. We had a few extra interactions with her, asking questions, and then she helped my husband find the sink inside to wash his fingers. It was like he was a guest in her home. She was just super sweet and extra helpful.
For a food truck, you may be taken aback by the prices, slightly, but the portion was sufficient, and the taste was divine. Truly worth it, especially since you're getting fresh fish!! Oh and it's right across from the beach. Unfortunately it was really windy and about to rain the day we were there. On my list to return to if I ever visit Oahu again!!
We were driving out to the north shore on Monday and stumbled across this place, and we are so glad that we did. It has ruined every other shrimp place on the island that we have tried. We've tried Giovanni's up the road from here and it doesn't even come close. Giovanni's shrimp is overrated and over cooked plus it costs more. Sae your time come here.
The shrimp shack is so good we drove up there just to eat again and might be doing it again before we leave. The shrimp are so sweet and juicy, they really could just be eaten with no butter. But butter does make everything better. After you order everything hits the pans. Food is so fresh and so good. The service is great to, both sisters Irene and Bonnie are great warming people who ensure that you feel welcome and go the extra mile for you.
I love this place!! It's a hidden gem for sure because it's not near the other Shrimp Trucks. Â The menu has a large number of items to choose from. Â Which is really nice considering that the majority of the other shrimp trucks have no more than 8 items to choose from. Â The owners were super friendly and definitely cared about our experience, even going so far as to come out to our table and ask us how we were doing. Â I thought the food was absolutely delicious! Â A previous review mentioned the quality was not up to their standard. Â However, one mustn't forget that the shrimp trucks are not 5 star gourmet, they are food trucks. Â For food trucks, the food is pretty darn delicious. Â I'm a believe in trying everything twice because the first time, good or bad, might not be a true indicator. Â Stoked, since I live in the island, I can try Shrimp Shack like 100 times!!! Â And I certainly will.
Another upside, it's parked next to a convenience store. Â They allow you to purchase items to consume with your food. Â Bigger bonus, if you want to pay with credit card, you can pay inside the convenience store and bring your receipt to the truck!!! Â Now that's what I'm talking about :)
See you again soon Bonnie & Irene.
Here at Wayde's World Hawaii it's all about the FOOD TRUCKS and budgets...Here on the far side of the East Coast of Oahu sits another one of those GEMS that many look past because of it's location...Too many Tourists just drive right by and it's A DAMN SHAME! Well, we don't and depending on what the Poor Man Guide Crew are doing for touring around the island this is one of the Wayde's World Hawaii stops for lunch that we bring our peeps!
If you don't stop here you are SERIOUSLY MISSING OUT on something special!
Not only are all the plate lunches great, these guys just don't offer shrimp....NO WAY! No only do they offer all the items all the major other well known North Shore Trucks offer, you'll also find things on this menu Macky's, Giovanni's and Fumi's WOULD NEVER OFFER, such as:
GRILLED MAHI AND ONIONS, SURF & SURF, SNOW CRAB, SHRIMP & CRAB, MUSSLES, CALAMARI, CRAB CAKES, SHRIMP & STEAK and the list goes on...to wash down those ONO GRINDZ you bettah get da "KONA ICEBERG"...it's out of this world!
Want a BEER with your plate lunch? Well...this is the ONLY Food Truck that sits next to a LIQURE STORE...YEP...Beer and Shrimp...Beer and Crab Legs? O HELL YES!
YOU WON'T FIND THIS STUFF AT ANY OTHER FOOD TRUCK FOLKS!
So don't be one of those people that just drive by...be one of those people that stops and gets a taste of paradise while here ACROSS FROM THE BEACH, ...You WON'T regret it! Open 10-5, 7 days a week!
Now there have been a few IDIOT REVIEWS, who clearly are...well...IDIOTS, and I'm not bashful is calling these crack heads out as I always do...Clearly mainland FOLK that don't live here in Hawaii like a SPECIAL SOMEONE from Queens NY...to hear the uneducated jizz coming from this womens mouth is just too much to bear...For your information lady...The Shrimp ARE FRESH, they have come from the Shrimp Farms on the North Shore as well as Kauai, they are LOCAL SHRIMP. You said it was drenched in butter and gallic....YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT IT IS AND WE LIKE IT LIKE THAT HERE! You say you think it's to mask the bad quality...OBVIOUSLY you don't know how the Shrimp trucks in Hawaii work their shrimp...the worst part of your review is you say you are Asian so your standards are probably higher when it comes to mushy rice. I guess us locals don't have high standards like you Asain folk when it comes to rice, pardon us...How insulting can you be? That alone VOIDS your DUMBA$$ REVIEW!
There are several other 2 star reviews, but I'm just not going to waste my valuable time breaking down their hate where there should be none...You just can't please everyone...Some of the most famous chefs on TV along with the Food Network don't talk up a place for the hell of it and the shrimp shack don't have the money to pay them off, so who are you going to believe...the people who know what they are doing and talking about or the people who don't know the difference between the Puka on their front side and puka on their back side?
Not sure what the hype is. We were doing a tour around the island and this place came up on yelp. Shrimp was not fresh, definitely the frozen kind. Food was literally undersalt (or should I say no salt at all), drenched in butter and gallic. Almost as if to mask the bad quality. Rice was mushy. Ok, I'm Asian so my standard is probably higher.
I Will not recommend. I feel like the Travel Channel made such a big deal out of it, but honestly it's not that great in my book.
After watching a show on the Travel Channel/Food Network, I bookmarked this place for my upcoming trip to Hawaii. Â We arrived on Oahu on November 29th, checked into Turtle Bay and proceeded to the Shrimp Shack. Â This was one of the best meals I have ever had. Â I ordered one of the floats (orange something), the spicy garlic shrimp and we also ordered the corn on the cob, which I was too full to eat. Â Since this meal was so good, we wanted to try some of the others out, and this was the best by far.
Beware, if you have iPhone maps, it will get you lost. Â It doesn't show the location correctly and will send you in circles looking
This was the second shrimp truck we encountered during our trip to Oahu and it too is also great! Â When a shrimp truck gets recommended by a local, we have to do our due diligence and try it out. Â This shrimp truck having been featured on Food Network surely doesn't disappoint. Â The food is great and the owner is very friendly. Â I tried the coconut shrimp and it was delightful. Â I also had the Kona Coffee Float to go along with the meal. Â We ended our meal signing their guest book :) Â Maybe the next time we come back we can track down our names and have ourselves another go.
Review Source:Buy food out of the back of a truck and eat on the side of the highway? In my hometown, that's dangerous, unsanitary, insane, and freezing. On Oahu, it's delicious, beautiful, and delightful.
Here's a money-saving tip: Skip the floats. The juice is warm and tastes funny with the addition of ice cream. But DO get the garlic shrimp and coconut shrimp. Also-get extra napkins. You'll need them.
Amazing shrimp, a great quick meal after a day of body surfing and lounging on the beach. I got the garlic and spicy shrimp; it was bathed in zesty sauce and cooked to my satisfaction. I also got the kona coffee poured over vanilla ice cream drink, and it capped off the meal.
Sweet lady at the counter and quick service. Even though I'm a white guy mainlander, for a moment I felt like an islander. Enjoy!
I spend a lot of time cruising and beach hopping along the Kam Hwy to fish, swim and just relax far away from the crowds of tourists. Â This truck, which is just past Punalu'u Beach Park if you're coming from the south toward Laie, has become my favorite place to eat on this part of O'ahu. Â The spicy garlic shrimp is my favorite dish. Â Get that along with some locally grown corn and a guava juice with ice cream and it's the perfect meal for a nice day in the most laid back part of the island. Â The ladies who work here are very friendly and serve you with lots of Aloha spirit. Â They seem to genuinely enjoy preparing delicious food.
Review Source:Omg. Hidden gem. Visiting from California and I am not kidding, the food is outrageously good. I was a bit skeptical about ordering steak and shrimp. The steak was cooked and sliced to perfection, shrimp perfect as well. The lady kept coming out of the truck to ask us how everything was with a smile. I have trouble getting food and service this good in any restaurant. I'm trying to get this group of 9 to go again in a few hours for dinner. Â Lol
Review Source:I have been wanting to try this place for a while now. Â Not only did I read about them in a magazine, I also saw them on some food show on tv. Â It was one of those places I had to make it to at least once, so I was happy that it was on the way to the hike my roomie and I were heading to one day. Â I got the garlic shrimp, mild flavor, and a pineapple and orange float. Â The woman who runs things is as nice and friendly as she seemed in the magazine and on the tv spot I had seen. Â I don't know if I was more excited about eating the food, or if she was more excited about my excitement! Â They have a cute seating area that gives you a pretty awesome view of the water past the street, and the tables are adorable. Â The food is pretty quick too, and the woman who brings it out was also very sweet. Â The food was DElicious! Â Tons of flavor. Â I will definitely be coming back.
Review Source:Read about this place in a magazine and I finally got to the windward side to try it out. The woman who runs the place is so great and her smile is infectious! She was very excited that we were excited to try out the food there. I got the spicy garlic shrimp with a strawberry-guava float (strawberry & guava juice with a scoop of ice cream). The tables are very cool looking, and the food came quickly. Man those shrimp had a KICK to them! Large plump, juicy shrimp over 2 scoops of rice with a sweet/hot garlicy sauce....heaven to my taste buds after my hike. I was glad I got the float because not only was it refreshing, but it helped the burn from the spice. Before I realized it, I looked down and all my food was gone :(
This place is a MUST if you're on the windward side and want a good plate meal after a day of activity. Licking your fingers never tasted so good!
Ahh man, I really wish we had been able to come back up to the Shrimp Shack when we were hungrier! Cam and I ordered the spicy garlic shrimp in the mild spice, and it was A M A Z I N G. Probably the best shrimp I've ever eaten. Prices are a little steep, but for the amount of food you get it's not so bad.
They do take cards, but you have to go into the store that the truck is parked at and have them run it for you, and bring the receipt back out to the lady at the counter.
YUMYUMYUMYUMYUM
Suck, peel, dip, eat. Â That's what the sign says. Â Random food truck along the road. Â Worth every mile of the long drive from Honolulu or on your way back from the Bonsai Pipeline.
I ordered the spicy garlic shrimp in a medium heat and it reminded me of a chili prawns recipe that I had from Singapore. Absolutely wonderful flavor and I would drive miles to eat it again.
I was there on a very windy day. As is always the case all seating is outdoors. We had to hold on tight to our hats our coats and our plates. You have a wonderful view of the Pacific ocean from your plastic resin table.
The food truck staff was extremely informative  about the food and fun to joke with.  I would recommend they get a stash of wet wipes.
You can purchase beverages at the attached store. I believe its name is Chang's.
This was our first shrimp truck and ooh myy, pretty darn good. Really garlicky and buttery, but compared to Giovanni's, there's no real kick.
I liked the little tables with the pictures of shrimp; it made the shrimp eating experience all the more enjoyable.
The portions are small compared to Giovanni's (the only other truck we tried on our way), but with all the rice and garlic, after a couple shrimps, we were all good to go.
If you run into it, stop by for a bite. If not, don't sweat it.
Meh. It was okay. Not worth the hype and certainly not worth the price. I just can't get over how all the shrimp truck stands are charging upwards of +$10 for a plate of shrimp ....out of the back of a truck. I mean it taste okay, and they give tons of rice, but for me and my honey goin out to eat we aren't wishin to spend 20+ bucks at a road side stand! So granted, most all the shrimp trucks we've encountered so far are charging this much for UNpeeled shrimp ((shakes head)). But this one in particular was okay. I'll try more variety before giving my judgement, but the coconut shrimp and sauce and the kahuku corn was alright. We had real yummy garlic shrimp at another place. So right now I'm a bit biased.
Bottom line: even though this place is literally right across the Punaluu bridge, we only ate here once and chose to drive elsewhere for food.
I have stopped at several SHRIMP trucks in Hawaii, but this has got to be one of the BEST!!!
The ladies who were running the place we very friendly and accomadating!! We stopped after a long 3 hour hike and it was about to poor down on us, they let us dine inside a room they have! I had the Garlic Shrimp with some MILD SPICE it was EXCELLENT!!! My Husband had the SPICY shrimp and also agreed that it was better than the previous places we have stopped at. Â I also had a Passion Orange Ice Cream float type drink with my meal that was very refreshing! I will be back when I go back to the Islands!
Shrimp Shack was the first shrimp truck experience in Oahu. Â It was featured on Food Network some time back. Â If I had only tried this truck and none of the others, I would have rated it 4-stars. Â However, I later discovered there are some better shrimp trucks in Oahu. Â After trying 3 different trucks, this is what I concluded:
Pros: Â Delicious butter dipping sauce and excellent rice. Â Friendly service.
Cons: Â Shrimp could be bigger and more plentiful. Â Other places split the shells down the back to remove the vein which also makes the shrimp easier to peel.
OH the hype...
alright let me start off by saying the lady was very nice and helpful explaining everything on the menu so + + + for her!
as for the food we ordered the famous pan fried shrimp plate, corn on the cob and pineapple shake was eh...
the shrimp was just shrimp with garlic and melted butter.. there wasn't any "flavor" Â that really stood out so that was kind of a disappointment. Â
The corn was sweet but it wasn't on the cob cause the stick broke off as we unwrapped it from the foil... you can't really mess up on corn though...
the shake was ok.. seems like it's just pineapple juice poured over vanilla icecream
i'm disappointed in the food network.. they really need to work on their recommendations... i guess i should have known better i mean come on.. if bobby flay and rachel ray's is making food recommendations then i guess you gotta take it with a grain of salt.
Tall boy meets shrimp
Interesting experience... stopped here while on a LOST tour for lunch. I am not really a shrimp person, so I had the grilled Mahi, a crab cake, which I found pretty tasty, along with the Kahuku corn. Only the corn was a letdown, and realllly a letdown. Maybe I'm spoiled getting fresh super sweet corn where I live, but this was pretty dry and not very sweet at all. Oh well. The owner was there, very nice and the rest of the food was good. The rest of the party enjoyed their food as well, so it was a good experience overall... just not super great overall.
So there I was, off to see if I could watch some surfing action during my first solo trip to Honolulu when I saw this awesome Shrimp Shack! Â I had no idea they were featured on the FoodTV Network til after I got home, I just had the feeling they were something special when I spied them!
I pulled over and got a really warm welcome, ordered a garlic shrimp plate with rice, sat at the outside tables next to the little store they were parked next to, and the next thing I knew I had my plate brought to me. Â Nice!
It wasn't cheap food, but it wasn't pricey either (compared to other garlic shrimp trucks around), and who can beat the ambiance of having a beach across the street from you?
The shrimp were fresh and plump and garlic-butter-y and I periodically became concerned with the spectacle I must be making of myself, eating with such - um - gusto!, yeah that's the word! Â The garlic sauce soaked into the rice and I had to threw all of my carb caution to the wind. Â I ate every last garlic-soaked shrimp and grain of rice in forking distance, and then had to stop short of licking my styrofoam plate. Â
Had I been in the comfort of my own home though, that plate would have gotten a darn serious licking!! Â =O
Very friendly blonde ladies, very mediocre food. Sorry. This place has Ilima Awards and Food Network articles plastered all over its pretty paint job, but the food itself is just blah.
The owner, a middle-aged spiky blonde, talked up the "most popular" Pan-Fried Garlic Shrimp plate. And then she egged us into a "Tropical Float," which was actually a red cup full of Hawaiian Sun juice with a broken scoop of vanilla ice cream for 2.75. Oh, and they were all out of Kahuku Corn, which I didn't really mind, except for the fact that the shrimp plate was just a mound of rice and 10 shrimp. Oh, and a cup of butter. For $11.
What was I expecting? Well, I'd just had an awesomely tasty garlic shrimp plate from the Kailua farmer's market, with the option of linguine, nalo greens, and fresh papaya seed dressing for the same price. so tasty that I found myself licking the styrofoam plate.
What I got from the Shrimp Shack was soggy rice, overcooked and slightly dry shrimp, douses of lousing butter, and not enough garlic or flavor, despite the cup of butter in my plate. The shrimp weren't shelled or veined, which I don't mind, but seriously, you can get 10000 times better fried shrimp if you order the Salt Pepper Shrimp at any Chinese restaurant. Or if you make your own shrimp, very simply and with hardly any prep, with garlic, butter, and salt at home. The shrimp shack food wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either.
Much more than mildly disappointing. I do give an extra star for the service. But . . . I'm not going back.
The food here was delicious! We meant to go to Giovanni's along the north shore, to tell the truth, but I'm certainly not sorry we tried this place instead.
We ordered the 'classic' garlic shrimp with rice; I thought it a bit pricey at the time, but we looked at other shrimp trucks and found that $11 for 8 big shrimp and rice is actually about the going rate. The people running it were friendly and chatty, and the garlic butter sauce was so good that I was tempted to eat the shrimp shells as well, just to keep the taste going. Yummmm.
Not bad and the prices were pretty comparable to other shrimp trucks I've frequented.
Hubs and I stumbled upon this shrimp truck while driving down Kamehameha Hwy. We screeched to a halt, turned around and were able to find parking off the side of the road.
I had the Pan Fried Garlic Shrimp and hubby had the spicy version of what I had. No complaints here! It was fresh and tasty although I have to admit I like Bluewater's just a tad bit more...sorry.
The owner was friendly and chatted it up with us for awhile while we ate. Topped it off with some homemade butter mochi from next door and were all set for the day. Good stuff! Oh, and like Joc V. stated below, I have to agree about the bar of soap that seems to have been there for decades--haha!
I can't compare this place to the other shrimp trucks, so I'm basing my review based on how the food tasted.
The food was DELICIOUS and the prices were not bad. For about 20 bucks I got 10 garlic shrimp with rice and a whole plate of crab legs. Mmm....their truck says that they were featured in Food Network and I was glad that this was the shrimp truck that I stopped at.
Give it a try...
::SHRIMP::
Going rate around here really... happy to leave "the vein" in (poop). Â Never a fan of that. Â Still, the shrimp is good / from the nearby farm action.
::FISH::
Fresh Frozen! Â No thanks...
::ATMO::
Like this location, and the shop it's attached to. Â Can sit inside on a rainy day, with a nice place to wash off all the goop. Â :)
::STAFF::
So nice. Â These are great people. Â Though, there is some guy in the store here that is happy to hog up the phone line while you wait around to do your credit card order... total A-Hole... everyone else seems great.
Super tasty and fresh pan fried garlic butter shrimp. Â Was initially skeptical ordering from this shrimp truck since no one else was around compared to the other very busy shrimp trucks on the north shore, but decided to be daring since this place has been featured on Food Network. And we weren't disappointed.
$10.75 + tax got us 10 very fresh and delicious shrimp along with 2 scoops of rice and extra butter. There is A LOT of garlic so don't plan to go on any hot dates after eating this stuff!
Bottom line: Looked a bit sketchy, but great shrimp and we had no issues with the food. Gotta do it.
While you're on the Windward and North Shores of Oahu, you'll see - and smell - several trucks that serve shrimp. Â We chose the bright yellow Shrimp Shack, located right next to Kaya's Store and were glad we did!
We ordered a plate of medium spicy shrimp that came with two scoops rice and plenty of aloha. Â That, along with some spam musubi and plantation ice tea from Kaya, was our lunch that day. Â The shrimp were big, garlicky (dragon breath alert!) and dripping with spicy sauce. Â You eat 'em at little tables by the side of the road for that true Island experience. Â
mmm........spicy garlic shrimp.....spam musubi........ice tea......
And lots of aloha!
The best "scrimps" on the windward side. Â The Shrimp Shack is that serendipitous find that's just perfect on your island drive tour. Â You stop by the side of the road, park and order your shrimp. Â Don't forget the locally grown Kahuku corn on the cob which you can slather with your leftover garlic butter. Â There is one way to eat these succulent pan fried garlic shrimp: suck, peel, eat and dip. Â If you forget, instructions are painted on their tables which line the front of Ching's market. Â Combine the sides of garlic butter and cocktail sauce and spoon it over your rice when you run out of shrimp like I did. Â For desert, walk over to the market next door and grab yourself homemade mochi cakes and brownies. Â Beware of the "homey" bathroom with the bar of soap that's been there since the Carter years.
