Picked this place for dinner with my family as it is located in the Village and we enjoy this type of food. I was concerned about the service after reading some reviews, but must say that my experience was very good. The restaurant is a little of the beaten path on the back side of the Village from Minaret road, so the place is pretty quiet with nice outdoor seating. We ordered a cheese Fondue and crepes and they all were really tasty. We found the service again real friendly and all had a great time! The free sangria offer when you check-in is also big and delicious!
Review Source:The food? Good. The service? Pretty bad.
Came here for happy hour which included a very limited selection of beers and a few wines. The food menu happy hour selection includes paninis/savory crepes, a side selection or a dessert crepe for $10. I chose the club panini and opted for the ciabatta for $1.50 more. It was well made and tasted freshly made. As for my second option, I chose the nutella crepe. Honestly, even if you make a crepe really poorly, the nutella will mask that. But it wasn't the case here luckily. Everything about my crepe from the powdered sugar down to the chewy consistency of my crepe was delicious!
But before we began our meal, we ordered the spinach artichoke dip. It is not your typical everyday dip. It's small. And not worth getting. It didn't maintain the right consistency throughout the dip, chunky and clumpy in one dip, cheese and smooth in another.
Now on to the service. Why is it so bad? There is absolutely no level of professionalism here. You have the waiter's friends coming in and out of here talking, chilling, smoking around the area. Then you have the waiter himself. He's neither rude nor obnoxious, he just lacks any professionalism. He reminds me of a snowboard instructor, even though it's clearly summer and he doesn't have to stand with his legs wide open while taking our order.
Note: double check your receipt. The waiter calculated something wrong, took it back, and gave it to us again without telling us what had happened. We also he still calculated it wrong by charging us $7 for the soup when it should have been $2 since we ordered the Cobb salad, which I found to be pretty tasty. But the soup... we could've passed on the vegetable puree soup.
This place is adorable! My family and I were reminded of the Purple Pig we are a fan of in Chicago. This place was the same deal. Excellent food, wine etc. Only thing is when we were waiting to be seated an employee needed to get into a closet we were standing in front of and literally stared us down for 10 seconds then said 'i need to get in there' ...holy cow buddy use your words! Haha. We stood clear of that closet the rest of our wait ;)
Review Source:Went here as a treat for my son (2yo) after a day in the Kids Club. Â Walked in at 3:30 and I thought they were closed. Â No one came out to the front, no offer of help, lights were low...it was odd.
After asking the bartender at the back of the restaurant if we could seat ourselves, we opted for a table in the front of the store. Â We ordered a hot chocolate for junior, a happy hour priced sparkling wine for mom, and the Lupin crepe. The crepe was delicious. Â It was pretty sweet, after all it IS a dessert! Â Nice portion, good presentation. Â
Waitress gets a gold star for asking if I wanted the hot chocolate "less hot" for the kid...good call! Â But that star got taken away, when she only brought us one set of silverware and one napkin....if you know to cool the hot chocolate, you know a 2+ yo doesn't eat with his hands and will inevitably make a mess with chocolate and whipped cream needing more napkins! Â Side note: As another reviewer pointed out, The server who wears the fedora was really great even though he wasn't initially our server.
This place COULD do REALLY well.....but the reason it doesn't score higher with me are the following;
*At 3:30, they didn't have the heaters on for people to sit at the only 6 top tables they have.  A family with 3 kids came in, tried to sit there and then ended up with us in the "barely open" counter area crammed at a tiny table because it was so cold.
*The front door was propped open (cold) the whole time we were there while a delivery guy carried in 8 boxes through the lobby and eating area.  Then the girls behind the counter started opening said boxes and getting excited about their contents, it was very unprofessional.  And who gets excited about a  shipment of envelopes?
*When other customers came in after us, they were greeted immediately, seated and then offered water and coloring items for the kids.....we got NONE of that when we were the ONLY customers?
Service was terrible. The waiter talked down to our group for no reason, then gave me an attitude about sending back an order he admittedly messed up on. When we received the bill, of course he included his gratuity and charged us for extra bread (and had the server bring it out). Most fine dining restaurants have great service, this one needs A LOT of work.
Oh, the server that always wears the fedora was really good though.
I have to say that my original review was more about the service (7/25/11). Â Not to say that I don't like to try places again. Â We all have good and bad days.
That being said, their food is very good. Â As a matter of fact I have eaten there twice in the past two weeks and I must say that I have really enjoyed the food and service. Â Tonight I had the pleasure to be served by a wonderful server, Jeff. Â He was courteous, attentive and spot on. Â
Did I mention the food?  Well tonight a beautiful butternut squash soup was the soup du jour which was not heavy nor salty but with nice notes of nutmeg and garlic.  The crépes are yummy.  Some of the savory are crépe Bretonne (buckwheat). Â
Try to get there for Happy Hour, the longest in the Village until 7:30pm and saddle up to a King Frosch GLÃœHWEIN (mulled wine), sangria or better yet try one of the many wines they have. Â They have an extensive wine list and can mix a great martini too. Â
BTW, they do have some yummy salads and great paninis. Â Why not fondue while up here in Mammoth the Swiss can't have all the fun. Â They've got that too! Â I'll be back, maybe see you here next time!
All day mimosa refills on Sunday for brunch! Â yay.
The cheese fondue is amazing. Â Don't pass it up. Â It's really that good - you won't get better anywhere else. Â Also the dessert crepes are excellent - we had the Nutella and the chocolate ganache ones.
The rest of the food is passable at best. Â We had a few different paninis - caprese, and one with pastrami or something. Â They were alright but not really good - kind of soggy. The side salad is meh - tasted like mixed greens and bottled dressing from the Vons downtown. Â The minestrone soup tasted like canned. Â
The service was really spotty - excellent one night, and abysmal the next. Â Right after being seated, the waitress took our drink order and didn't come back to take our food order until I went and asked the hostess after waiting 20 minutes.
Kind of expensive, but it is a ski resort area.
Wow! Great place for dinner AND breakfast! Â We had their amazing fondue (with sausage) for dinner, soooo good! They make their own Butter Rum - great after a day of skiing!
We then took family there for breakfast, the crepes are very good and huge - you could share one. Â The breakfast sandwiches are great too! Â We ended up all sharing and tasting each others, they were all great. Â Try the Baja Mocha, really good!
The food here rocks! The service rocks!
The menu for their happy hour, meh. They've only got Pabst Blue Ribbon and they don't have anything on tap available for happy hour. Their menu for happy hour is slightly limited, as well. These are the biggest negatives; but onto the more positive things!
Their fondue was GOOOOOOD. Be sure to get the sausage fondue; it had a very unique and smoky taste to it. They accidentally gave us the chicken, and threw in a platter of the sausage for free!
Their crepes are pretty damn tasty, as well!! I got the Kamikaze crepe for dessert...a whole lot of sweetness with a lot of flavor. Their Sangrias; the bomb!
Great place for a small group of people to have dinner. Come early! They start getting packed by around 6.
It took a few years of passing this place while en route to Gomez's or the Smokeyard and destinations in between to finally pull the trigger and check it out. Â Being one of only two, original Village dining spots to remain unchanged since the Village's opening several years ago, I suspected that they had a decent thing going. And besides... who doesn't love a good crepe?
This place turned out to be a great breakfast option. Â The service was friendly and welcoming, and when such service is encountered in Mammoth one must relish it... who knows when it will be found again. Â The interior was well-appointed - decidedly less divey/rustic than most Mammoth restaurants - and well-stocked with an impressive collection of wines. Â And the choice of solo piano background music was tasteful - for once I didn't have to listen to the pulsing bass of the "snowboarder's music" that seems to be Mammoth Lake's unofficial soundtrack (aka the alternative rock they play on the hill and in many other local establishments). As many reviewers have pointed out, the crepes here - sweet and savory alike - are large and, ranging from $7-11, directly comparable in their filling-power to many of the comparably priced items at The Stove. Â
I can see this being a brilliant place to spend an evening during summer concerts in the plaza. Â I look forward to sampling their paninis, libations, and anything else they want to throw at me.
Cool little wine bar & crepe eatery in the village. My fiancee and I enjoyed their chardonnay and shiraz by the glass. Stephanie was a great bartender. Love the ambiance here as well. I'll try to talk my boys into coming here on one of our fishing trips, but I'm sure we'll end up at some dive bar. Stay thirsty my friends!
Review Source:On our first trip to Mammoth, my husband and I were checking out happy hour in the Village and, luckily, our first stop was the Side Door Cafe! They had some really nice happy hour specials, and we definitely enjoyed the $5 glasses of wine. I also spotted a $10 dinner special during happy hour, which we didn't try but it looked like a good deal. We ordered the fondue which was delicious! We had a very nice experience overall, chatting with the very friendly bartender and enjoying the nice decor. I would recommend this place to any Mammoth visitors! Good food, good service and a great wine list!
Review Source:My boyfriend knows I love a good dessert so he looked up some places in Mammoth and decided to try this place. Â It was late in the day and we were thinking about sharing an order, but decided to get two crepes. Â
We ordered the Mammoth crepe, roller coaster and a decaf mocha with soy. Â Btw, they have almond milk!
It took some time for the order to arrive, but when it did it was simply incredible! Â Glad we didn't share because we didn't speak once the order was set down and devoured it all. Â Fantastic food. Â The Mammoth is just that - a crepe packed full of strawberries and bananas with Nutella. Â The roller coaster is just no bananas. Â The decaf mocha was one of the best mochas we have ever had.
Side door sits right in on top of the theatre space so we enjoyed music and relaxed. Â A wonderful night.
Came here for dinner and it was packed. The front feels more like a cafe and the back is a nice wine bar vibe. It was full in the back so we sat outside in the covered area. For all intents and purposes, this area is indoors. It is completely covered on all sides with plenty of heat lamps.
After a cold day of skiiing, we all had the warm wine. It truly hit the spot. It was on Happy Hour special too for $5. Happy Hour runs from 5pm-7:30pm. As for the food, the menu is not that diverse, and offers lite fare sucha s crepes and salads. They also have paninis.
I had the Viva Crepe which was a prosciutto crepe. It also came with aoli on the outside which was too much. A lot less aoli and this would have been much better. In addition, the crepe was a bit on the salty side.
The service was friendly and average speed wise since they were so busy. A good place to come in the village, I'd probably just come here for drinks.
The bf and I had time to kill on Sunday in Mammoth, so we decided to check out the Village. We were drawn to the "wine, cheese, and crepes" sign outside, which are my 3 most favorite things in the world! Great product advertisement if you ask me!
The Side Door Cafe is very charming. I love the decor, the light fixtures, and their wine racks. Everything screams cute cute cute! Their menu is pretty extensive, from paninis, breakfast classics, fondue, and (most importantly) sweet and savory crepes! We had just had breakfast an hour earlier, so opted for a sweet crepe: the Mammoth crepe!! Â Nutella, strawberries, banana, and whipped cream. It was heaven in every bite!!! The bf and I devoured it in a minute. Will definitely get this again! Yay to Mammoth and the Mammoth!!!
Their paninis and crepes are decent. Nothing wowed me the couple times I've been here but their menu has a lot to choose from so maybe I just haven't found the right one for me. For happy hour (5PM-7:30PM) my friend and I like the warm red wine they serve here, I've never seen it anywhere else. I personally never had a problem with service here, everyone was nice.
I'll need to try a sweet crepe the next time.
As soon as I read "paninis, crepes, and wine" on their door, they had me hooked. Â I came here with my husband midday on a Saturday, and this place was PACKED. Â We were able to find a lone table in the back, and quickly made ourselves at home. Â You have to order at the front first, and then they bring your food to you. Â We got a brie/prosciutto panini, the Mediterranean crostinis (caramelized shallots, spinach, feta, and balsamic vinaigrette), the mambo crepe (bananas, lemon, and whipped cream), and a hot chocolate. Â They have a sweet wine bar, of which I did not take advantage.
The best part of the meal was by far the crostinis...mmmmm. Â Everything else was decent. Â I was not a big fan of the crepe; I'm pretty sure this was one of the worst crepes I've ever had (and I've had many), but I still enjoyed it enough to gobble it down without remorse.
I'd come again; it beats the other options in the surrounding eateries!
Good food, bad service!
If this place would re-evaluate their business practices, I'm sure they could be a lot more efficient and earn 4-5 starts from me. On the day we were there, the place was packed and the walk-in line was long. I only saw 1 barista (serving both dine-in and walk-in lines) and 2 waiters, which had them ran around as mad men. I had to get my own menues and hunt for a waiter to place our orders. They ran out of strawberries and bananas (really?? in a crepe place, where most of desert crepes are made with one or the other AND there is a grocery store nearby??).
We had Quicksilver and Frenchie crepes for lunch and shared Nutella crepe for dessert (could have used strawberries or banana's in it... hmpf) Food is the only reason this place gets 3 stars... hope they'll look into their operations and find ways to be more customer oriented, because the food was great.
Saw the reviews for this place, loved the menu, and really wanted to love the place. It was my first trip to Mammoth, and we were looking for a place for breakfast/brunch that also served alcohol at 10AM. Hey, it was vacation!
FOOD - Huge menu of sweet and savory crepes, fondue, paninis, and breakfast items. We went with the NY Style Pastrami Melt panini, the Hangman's crepe, and the Mediterranean Crostini for a starter. I asked to sub chevre for the swiss cheese in our crepe, with no problem.
The first thing I noticed was that the mushrooms in both our items were canned. I'm not by any means a food snob, but directly from a can. The pastrami panini was good, with a great combo of flavors, but a very thin layer of pastrami compared to other sandwiches I've had. The corners were just bread. The crepe was very well done too, with sun-dried tomatoes, spinach, chevre, mushrooms, peppers and pesto. We thought it was strange that the appetizer came out so long AFTER our food was served, pretty much when we were almost done. I'm pretty sure they forgot. It was good, but pretty expensive for the 6 small pieces.
DRINKS - We ordered a regular bloody mary and a glass of the sangria. The sangria was good, served in a large glass, but without any fruit and a little too much carbonation. The regular bloody mary was because they had run out of most other liquors.
SERVICE - I laughed at the other reviews describing the lax attitude and "mountain time" because it's so true. Things were forgotten, tables didn't seem to be cleared off until someone asked to sit at one, etc. The waitstaff was nice, but were kinda space cadets.
Good food, ok overall.
This place is a solid 4 Stars and I'm tough to please. 5 stars is not something I just hand out.
So I've eaten here 3 times now and everything was great. Best white chocolate mocha I've ever had. Best panini I've ever had and the crepes were really good but I've had better. Flavor wise the crepes were right on but I found them to be a little on the dry side. They also have bagels and breakfast bagels. I was able to get them to make me items not on the menu. I always love when a place is that flexible and willing to please.
I would eat here every morning in Mammoth because from what I've tried it's the shining star.
They also have a nice wine cellar but I've never cone during drinking hours so I don't know what that's like.
If you come here your going to need some time because the pace is very European. That's to say the focus is on excellence not the speed that they can deliver a product or how fast they can turn a table.
Crepes are not fast food. People that come in and expect McDonald's speed are annoying. Having said that the food is great . Had about 4 meals there over the course of xmas week. The owner is on the premises and is very helpful. Remember that you are in a resort town so fluctuations in business are very hard for small vendors to gage. The crowd coming off the mountain at one time can overwhelm all of the restaurants in the village. Not sure I would order a bottle of wine because of temperature fluctuation and the way they store it . some is way to close to heating vents.
The staff is probably transient because of resort life. Not sure you can do anything about it .
The crepes here are fantastic. Â We've been coming her for the past couple years and every time I try something new and every time I'm delighted by my choice. I had the Wooly (carmel & butter topped with whipped cream) this week and it was great, but nothing tops the Roller Coaster (nutella & strawberries) or the Mammoth (nutella, strawberries & bananas). Â
The only problem with this place is the service. Â I get the whole concept of "mountain time" and I get that perhaps a few of the dudes working behind the counter have herbally-challenged brain cells, but taking an order and fulfilling it shouldn't be so complicated. Â Waiting nearly 40 minutes for a couple of crepes is ridiculous, but because "oh, sorry, dude, I forgot" is kind of unforgivable. Â
The wine selection is good and there have been times in the past where the wait staff was friendly AND competent, so I wouldn't rule this place out. Â Try coming before the lifts close at 4 and it won't be so crowded.
We stumbled across this little café on our stroll through the village.  I could not decide where I wanted to eat so I thought to just go here for some cappuccino.  Then to my surprise the menu was exactly what I wanted:  Panini, salad, crepes, and coffee. Â
I had the Di Parma Panini and a White Chocolate Cappuccino. Â The sandwich was made perfectly with ciabatta, di parma prosciutto, tomato, brie, and arugula spring mix dressed with olive oil. Â The coffee was a medium roast (which I like) and it was sweetened perfectly and not too sweet. Â
I wish I came back to eat here instead of eating at (reservations-in-advance-if-you-want-dry-meat restaurant) the next day.
If you're in The Village and looking to spend a relaxing evening and unwinding, this is the perfect place. Â They have crepes, paninis, desert crepes, coffee and a full bar. Â Their Viva crepe is delicious (it has brie, prosciutto, spinach, and tomato) and fairly large - it will definitely fill you up. Â And you have to try their dessert crepes - I especially like the simplicity of the Nutella, banana crepe.
Excellent happy hour deal: Â buy 1 glass of wine, get the 2nd glass for $1. Â That's a great deal - especially if you buy a $12 glass of wine. Â You only spend $13 on wine that would have cost you $24. Â Sweet.
Are you in search of a great hot meal for lunch or a pleasant dessert to end your night? Perhaps a tasteful glass of wine or champagne? Search no further..
Side door cafe provides delicious paninis or savory crepes that are extremely filling. Â And if you're in the mood for some dessert, there are some amazing sweet crepes to fill your sweet tooth as well. Â
And who needs Starbucks when you can get a bomb-ass latte or espresso here? However, do be weary of the apple cider--it's instant (blech). If you're a tea person, you're in luck; they serve mighty leaf tea (my personal favorite).
Finally, there's the fully stocked bar in the back room that is filled to the brim with all sorts of wines and champagnes.
You really can't go wrong with this place. It has everything you could possibly want, including that smooth jazz playing on the speakers. Love it.
Huge wine selection, though the by-the-glass options are expensive and not that intriguing - perhaps to encourage people to buy a bottle? Good paninis, albeit on the small side for the price (especially if you've been skiing all day). Â There are some items on the menu that seem wildly overpriced (like a bowl of soup for $6.50 - a small bowl), and while good, aren't that good. Â The dessert crepes on the menu looked interesting, but nothing flew off the page. Â Color me jaded - I've been to more than my fair share of creperies on the other side of the Atlantic, so I need more than bananas and nutella to be convinced.
I'd go back to this place to see how it fares during a busier time of night, and whether the enthusiastic (if sloppy) service is still there. Â We dined at the ridiculously early hour of 6 pm on a Friday night, and easily got one of the 5 indoor tables. Â Not sure if that's the case any later however.
Excellent crepes, paninis and a full service wine bar with a wonderful 'cave'. Â
The galettes (buckwheat crepes) filled with ham, cheese, spinach and a variety of other tasties are a great lunch off the mountain.
Follow one up with a sweet crepe with Nutella filling and a cafe au lait made with Loony Bean coffee.
Update: Service sucked at my last visit - and they weren't even busy.
