I went here on a very awkward first date, but I won't let that get in the way of my review. Â It was Valentine's Day and I didn't want to go to a place that would be romantic. Â He told me it was a "red neck" bar, which I instantly loved. Â Let me tell you dear reader, it is NOT Â a red neck bar. Â The bar area is marble and stone, it has a small area for a band that was not being used. Â Maybe I didn't see what he saw, but this is not what I picture when thinking about a red neck bar. Â
The menu had far more than bar food.  It all looked good.  I have to admit that I did look at other  yelp reviews and was bit apprehensive about the food.  I chose the steak salad.  It was wonderful.  I asked for medium rare.  The steak was perfectly cooked and well seasoned.  (not overly so, the meat had great flavor and was very tender) Â
From what I remember the wine list had plenty of choices and the bartender gave some great suggestions. Â Speaking of the bartender, she gave us great service. Â Attentive but not over bearing.
NPWH. Â This is a great bar with really good food and exceptional service. Â I worked with them to host a party and they could not have been more cooperative. I have been happy with everything I have ordered except once the bartender talked me into the cheese sticks. Â Unlike most bars that buy them frozen, they bread them in-house which I can appreciate, but they are too big and gushy. Â
People who think this place is expensive should get out more.
This place always seems to be packed and upon a neighbors recommendation I decided to check it out. Â I was surprised at how many people make this their after work destination. Â It was even hard to find a parking place.
So here is the run down on this place.
Atmosphere / Ambiance:
It is quite nice on the inside and also offer covered outdoor dining. Â The interior looks like a bar, with some nice details like the copper plating on some of the pillars. Â Dark, plenty of booths. Â More TV's than you can imagine (too many if you ask me) but I guess it is supposed to be a generic catch all type place that can be a sports bar getaway for the non-direct TV customers and psuedo-romantic dinner place with the decor. Â Also any place in this area of suburbia that offers outdoor dining always gets an extra star. Â So chalk up one star for the interior.
Service:
Service was exceptional. Â Waitress asked if it was our first time dining there and upon us answering yes promptly gave us some recommendations (of which we did not order). Â As a brilliant marketing ploy they offer up a free appetizer of Spicy Hummus to new customers, brought by either the owner, manager or executive chef. Â Not sure which role he fulfills as his name matched the name of the executive chef listed on the menu.
Service was prompt and friendly. Â My only complaint is that I had to listen to two employees discuss proper etiquette with their manager while one was at the waiters station directly behind my booth and the other was cleaning tables on the tier of booths directly above my booth. Â I was in the cross hairs of restaurant politics which wasn't too pleasant. Â The two having the discussion were not my waitress so I didn't hold that against her. Â
So another star for the service.
Food:
Now here is where this place went from decent experience to crying shame in one complete train wreck of a meal (other than one item).
First the complimentary appetizer.
Spicy Hummus
Normally I leave complimentary dishes out of the reviews because they usually are just a pleasant surprise (which it was, Â I was very happy to have been served it and a nice gesture on the part of the restaurant for new customers) but almost the entire meal was a train wreck so I am shoving it in this review. Â
Hummus wasn't all that spectacular. Â I make better hummus in my own home and if that is the case there is no reason for me to order it at this specific restaurant. Â Not sure if they make it themselves but it is essentially average hummus with chili oil poured over the top. Â It is served which what I like to call "spongey" pita. Â It is the stuff they sell you at Costco or BJ's that isn't real pita bread at all. Â They put a couple of grill marks on it, and I guess that is supposed to make it tasty. Â So below average rating on the dish as a whole, but with the caveat that I exceptionally appreciated the gesture and noted it as part of the service rating.
Fish & Chips:
How hard is it to execute such a simple dish? Â Well I guess it is harder than I thought. Â The largest problem with this dish was the fish itself. Â The most important ingredient was not of a decent standard. Â I have a feeling that they thawed that fish earlier in the day because it was a mealy texture. Â It was so bad that it had pulled away from the batter, and made the batter itself soggy. Â No crispy batter, no flakey fish.........horrible. Â French fries were decent though, but when the main ingredient in the dish is so crappy, you get no kudos.
Shrimp & Grits:
This was the best of all the dishes, but I wouldn't put it on your list to order any time soon. Â Shrimp were overdone, andouille tasted like it was from a grocery store (which I don't understand because there is a Cajun butcher in Marietta that could probably supply this place with the real stuff), cream sauce was a little rich and very salty. Â Grit cakes were OK, but the salt..........blah!
Lamb Burger:
If you like the taste of feta and lemon, this one if for you. Â Unfortunately I like the taste of lamb, and was hoping they knew what they were doing.
The waitress came around and said "boy it looks like you didn't like that lamb burger." Â in reference to how quickly I consumed it. Â Well I was incredibly hungry and decided to just plough through the cheesey lemon taste and cut my losses. Â When I responded "yeah guess so." I don't think she realized I was telling the truth.
Now I have to give this place food kudos for one item. Â The sweet potato fries. Â I had them with my burger and they were very good.
If it is a potato and they are frying it, I recommend whatever they serve.......and that is where my recommendation ends.
This place has potential, some decent concepts, but the ingredients are just sub par and the execution is atrocious. Â They need to decide if they want to be upscale dining or a plain old bar with wings and beer. Â If they choose the latter, I would just hope that they get a few more beers on tap.
You don't eat ambiance.
I enjoyed this place. Â The atmosphere was attractive. Â Dark and comfortable. Â It's like a sports-bar trying to add a little romance on the side. Â Though romance might be difficult if you're constantly distracted by the sounds of women's tennis being played on several dozen television screens. Â Not that I would ever complain about such a thing. Â
Parking was easy. Â We went on a Monday. Â It seems clear this place (having expanded) must get a lot of traffic on the weekends, when they also bring in live music and run other specials. Â
And our food was good. Â I had a grilled chicken sandwich, which is sort-of my baseline thing. Â I figure, if they mess up a grilled chicken sandwich... Â But it was good. Â The fries were tasty. Â The portions were not out-of-control- huge. Â And our server was very attentive. Â
I'll go back. Â Holler if you're coming with.
