I admittedly feel creepy about trying to review a school cafeteria, I mean are we going to start critiquing parking lots? But I'm here and I guess people have access to this place so it counts.

First off, don't order any Asian adjacent food here, this is as I remind you a cafeteria. Just stick to any muffin/chips/onion rings kind of finger food or generally pre-packaged. The waffle fries are basically the main reason to eat here, does anyone really get enough waffle fries in their life? Also the coffee is passable and does the job.

Nice people, fair service, I just need a spot to pick up my Snapple during my graveyard shift classes.

very tasty pad thai's and other classic asian dishes with tofu, meats = its just you can't feel very good about the quality of meats even if you devour this stuff.. buttt, sonny's food doesn't give you stomach spasm unlike panda ex.  and such..

and waffle fries are cheap, filling, happy making.

Food poisoning central. And I don't say that lightly.

After months of feeling sick on a certain specific day every week, I had one bout of severe food poisoning, and realized when talking with a friend it was always approximately 6 hours after lunch at Sonny's (on the one day I had class in the Columbus building) that I got sick. I stopped eating there and the stomach ailments ended.

During lunch, there is so much chaos - food being thrown around, lines out the door - that it's no wonder some element of food safety is overlooked.  There's also a lot of yelling and screaming on the part of Sonny himself, at the workers, which wasn't that pleasant to watch.

I realized only recently that there  is a decent cafeteria in the basement of the Museum which would have been the only real alternative to Sonny's.  Save yourself the stomach troubles and eat there instead.

I've been told by people who aren't students at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, that Sonny's is a terrible example of Thai food. Maybe they're right, but I wouldn't know because I spent my entire freshman year bringing white rice to school and getting their vegetarian eggroll. I was both entirely addicted and also broke.

One morning, I discovered the crucial reason for my addiction, they deep fry their bacon. Why is this crucial might you ask? Well because they deep fry their eggrolls. What this means, is that their eggrolls are deep fried in oil with a bit of bacon grease in it!

Maybe Marge Simpson suggested to Sonny to "slip in meat juice", but I think the results are clear. So vegetarian kids who swear up and down that Sonny's gives them food poisoning, I present to you the possibility that you're getting sick from bacon grease.

I love their pad thai and frequently eat there when I visit the museum still. It's not like the pad thai at most places in that it's more homestyle with everything cooked separately and then thrown together with freshly chopped peanuts and hot pepper flakes. The flavor of each individual item is more pronounced this way. Plus the portions are huge for the little you pay.

I'm also a fan of their tofu dishes. They're not scare with the vegetables so when I felt depleted of vitamins, but had to be frugal, I'd pick up a tofu vegetable.

But my favorite thing ever was getting a Choco-taco and a soda and making the totally ghetto ice cream float.

I really miss having lunch at sonny's. Its probably the best thing about having class in the colombus building and Its something I really miss about school. Sonny's is a great little place located INSIDE the school of the art institute, If you are in the museum, you have access to it and should eat there then the cafe in the museum.
Its open to the public- but very very few people outside of the school know about it. Sonny's has one of the best pad thai's in city. They have excellent prices, as it is in a school! filled with students paying out of their ass to go there. They also have several other asian great dishes, as well as hamburgers, sandwiches, veggie options, and soups. Its probably the most perfect lunch spot in the city.
