Whoa, I have a feeling I will end up having my boyfriends ashes spread here one day.
He absolutely loves beer anything, so this store really excited him. We came here to grab some cider for a friends birthday, they had quite the selection. The store and bar was packed, and we didn't have time to stay and try anything.
Also, *rare*: They have a speciality IPA glass that I have only been able to find online. Very cool!
I just wanted information over the phone. I guess they want experienced people to call...... Very short when asked a question, very rude over the phone. I called another place that rents kegs. Within five minutes of being on the phone with the other company i felt like a true professional and I know what I want now. I'm sorry for making the mistake of calling your number......I will never make that mistake again and I will make sure anyone i know won't either......Learn patience to your novice customer and be willing to answer questions.
Review Source:This is a great place, great environment. Though it is small it works! My hubs loves this place for their beer selection. They also have some cider to choose from as far as bottles go. They have a selection of brews on tap as well. Hubs goes for the taster, which is a great deal for the money. They have a dog, Buddy that's super sweet too! The owners are very nice and remember you if you've been there before which makes it more personal. Great place!
Review Source:Fantastic selection of beer from all around the world! They have six rotating taps that are usually always unique and something you'll never see in a local restaurant or bar. Great beer and friendly staff make this a great establishment. Be sure to check out the place on Wednesdays for Brewers Night!
Review Source:It's nice to see a well-stocked bottle shop outside of the Seattle city limits - great selection! They post on their website/Twitter/Facebook all of their new deliveries, so whenever a great special release comes out, I can find out quickly whether or not they've gotten it yet. Also, great, laid-back atmosphere.
Review Source:The selection of specialty beers, ciders and mead is outstanding. Â My favorite feature is the bar. Â If you can grab a seat, you can enjoy something on tap, have a snack and chat with the Annie's, Jake, Clint or Sam. Â If you need more than a snack, they're happy to order delivery for you, or you can bring in your own food to eat there.
Every Wednesday you can expect a Brewers Night; it's not to be missed!
They also update on fb as deliveries come in, and as kegs get changed out. Â There have been several occasions that my husband and I have stopped what we were doing and immediately drove to SB after seeing what was just added on tap!
The staff doesn't just make you feel welcome, you feel like part of their family if you go there often enough. Â Even after just one or two visits, you're greeted by name as soon as you walk in the door. Â Not only are the staff the goofiest, friendliest people you're likely to meet, but they know practically all there is to know about every type of beer. Â
The only thing that would make Special Brews better is if there was more seating (Annie does have something planned, but it'll take time). Â It gets crazy packed, especially when they have special events, but don't let that discourage you! Â You can always find a place to drink, even if there aren't any seats open.
This is the kind of bottle shop you wish was in your neighborhood. But it's in mine. Therefore it is mine. So come on down to my bottle shop! I'll be glad to have you.
Wonderful things about my establishment:
1. Open late-ish, until 10pm weekdays and 11pm Fri/Sat.
2. Not just for beer. There is also a Viking-friendly selection of mead and cider.
3. Well-maintained website. See what's just been stocked!
4. Every time I've come in so far, there have been homemade snacks.
5. Give them a week's notice and they can get you almost any keg you want.
6. On my first visit, my husband was like "What do you have from Southern Tier?" (NY brewery that makes fancy liquid dessert beer.) "Look directly behind you," they replied, "and there is a brand new box of 2XMAS, their seasonal winter variety." We drank it and it was amazing.
In short, it would be hard to say anything too negative about a toy store for booze, but Special Brews goes above and beyond just selling a wide selection of beer. They make it a super-enjoyable, cozy booze discovery experience.
I was excited to find some new kind of beer, but was unpleasantly surprised to be ignored while standing at the counter. I guess the text message the bar tender was writing was more important ( male bartender). I will go to the grocery store and purchase my beverages. I love to support small business, but not be ignored. I hope this helps for future clients.
Review Source:I've only been here twice so far and already love the place. This is probably one of the best bottle shops in the greater Seattle area.
They have a huge selection crammed into a fairly small space and a full bar with plenty of chairs, TV and even a couch to relax and enjoy the beers on tap. In addition to the single bottles, they also have a larger selection of 6 packs than I normally see and a decent sized singles case where you can mix and match a sixer of your own; a great way to try new beers.
The best part is definitely the staff who seem very genuine, knowledgeable and receptive to requests. They're the first bottle shop in the area to actually deliver on a request for Hacker Pschorr Weisse, my all-time favorite beer, which I've found hard to come by. Between this, their great selection and friendly atmosphere I will definitely frequent them often.
For the love of beer.
You can never run out of selections of beer and other specialized brews. The seating is limited but the people are wonderful and we have always had a good time. The best part is you can bring in your own food and get your drinks at the store, you will find what your looking for to compliment whatever your eating.
Review Source:great selection and great prices, its only expensice because you cant walk away with just one.. they all look to damn good. Great customer service the owners are nice and if your a regular and keep buying the same beers they will do there best to keep them in stock for you.
its nice being able to open a bottle there or try one of there rotating taps
The North end is lucky to have such a great beer spot up here! Thanks to Heidi P. for introducing me to Special Brews.
I've been to Special Brews a handful of times and have enjoyed each experience. The owner is very friendly and helpful. 90% of the beers available I have never even heard of. It's fun to roam the aisles and pick out new beers to try.
There are rotating taps at the store and if you're lucky you can snag a place to sit to enjoy your beer. Definitely worth a trip- even worth a trip from Seattle in my opinion.
ZOMGZOMGZOMG. I'm like a kid in a candy store. So much beer. Aahh, beer. Glorious, liquid golden deliciousness. And all types! Single bottles, big and small, single cans, six-packs, and limited edition boxed collections. You can tell from what they have chosen to showcase that they are really passionate about beer.
They even had a pretty nice selection of Polish, Czech, and Russian beer. Yeah, I was instantly impressed with that part of the selection, because of the attention to the imports that Special Brews put into it's offerings. The store isn't as big as some of the other specialty brew stores I have visited, but their selection is nonetheless very impressive, and they definitely know what to keep stocked.
They have a small bar where they rotate out 5 or 6 beers on tap. It is a well balanced combination of variety and simplicity to make it completely awesome. I'm jealous of the mugs on the wall, that belong to the regulars that get to come here all the time. I got to kick back with a few pints, and although it was crowded, one of the regulars moved seats so me and my companion could sit together.
It is such an amazing little store with a welcoming, neighborhood feeling. I just adored it, and I will be returning. I'm glad I know there is a place in the north end where all of my beer fantasies will come true.
Amazing bottled beer selection and the owners take pride is knowing what is on their shelves. The bonus is that they went the extra mile to get their liquor license and have a handful of rotating taps. Only downside is their location in a strip mall. But, you don't feel it when you're inside. Stop in and ask Annie any beer questions. She's happy to help.
Review Source:Love to drop in and see what Annie has on the shelf as well as what is on tap. She always has had an amazing selection of bottles to choose from and great wisdom to guide me to the one that is right for the mood I am in at that moment. I have never left there without having at least one draft beer and taking home several bottles. A great place ot expand your beer knowledge.
Review Source:Special Brews is a welcome change from trolling around grocers and liquor stores, hoping they have something new and interesting. The selection is diverse and easy to mix and match. The staff was knowledgable and I felt very much like I was in a serious coffee or cigar shop. Â The atmosphere was very relaxed and I would definitely come back just to hang out.
Review Source:Special Brews is where to go if you're trying to find a specific beer in the north end. Â When the autumn season rolled around, I was on a mission to find the elusive Dogfish Head Punkin Ale. Â After calling around and checking with numerous places that claim to carry this specific brew, Special Brews saved the day. Â When I called in I talked to a young woman who was very helpful and let me know that they had one 4 pack left and she would put it aside for me. Â When I arrived she was super helpful and suggested some other beers I could try that would be similar to the Punkin Ale. Â
The store itself is small, but is packed full of a large selection of craft beers. Â Beers can be purchased by the bottle, which is nice, but makes it a little pricey, therefore the 4 stars I'm awarding it. Â The other great thing about Special brews is that you can actually drink here too!! There is nothing better than getting to try the beers before taking them home. Â It's in a strange location, on highway 99 near Lake Serene, but worth checking out if in the area!
Special Brews was my first stop upon arriving in town Friday afternoon. Even at 3PM, the small bar area was nearly full, but I was able to grab a seat. The taplist that particular day didn't wow me, mostly because half of the taps were common Oregon beers I can get in Portland, and some of the others were stouts and other styles I knew I probably wouldn't like.
I ended up having a goblet of North Sound ESB, which tasted like perhaps the keg had gone off a bit, or perhaps the line they'd hooked it up to hadn't been cleaned, because there was a distinctly Belgiany, brett twang to the beer, which is not a flavor one should find in an ESB. Â I drank it anyway, though. Next up was a Der Hofmaal White Gold, which was a nice crisp Belgian golden or wit. Very tasty, and served in a fancy thin-stemmed glass, the type which I never use since I'm apt to break them.
They were showing Bridesmaids on the flatscreen when I arrived, but it was just ending. The barmaid then put on MacGruber, which was painfully cheesy and the volume level varied so much as to be distracting. Â
I walked through the shelves and coolers, and saw that the selection was small but well-edited. I didn't end up buying any bottles since I didn't have any room in the cooler in the car, but I could see how I might do a lot of beer shopping here if I were a local.
An excellent beer selection and very knowledgeable staff/owners. Â The atmosphere is great and not bar like. Â It is a great place to pick up a few brews or stop in and have something new on tap. Â My hope is that this place continues to be a relaxed environment and not turn into bar where people take away from the fun of enjoying and appreciating very good beer!
Review Source:My sister and brother-in-law took me to Special Brews. Â I don't know much about beers, so I knew I was out of my element. Â They suggested the 6-beer sampler. Â The placemat gave me a very good description of each sampler. Â The first one I had was great! Â Three Skulls Ale brewed with oranges. Â WOW. Â My sister stated I could buy it there in the bottle (which I did.. in a 22 oz bottle). Â Really liked the selection in the sampler, Â but don't remember the other beer names. Â Many patrons have a record of everything they have tried there and they rate the beers each time they come in. Â Annie owns the place with Jake. Â Annie was working and she was fantastic in her knowledge, quick wit, and it felt like a Cheers-type atmosphere with friendly people. Â She keeps these records and brings them to to you with a pen as you are trying the beers. Â As we hadn't had lunch, we went two doors down and bought sandwiches to eat while drinking our beer. Â Annie had stated that was just fine with her. Â I have to come back to Special Brews next time I am in town. Â Oh...and Buddy the dog is there to greet you as well. Â Great dog, great beer, great company. great fun! Â There are hundreds and hundreds of beer varieties that line the shelves of this small, quaint business.
Review Source:We discovered Special Brews while walking our dogs and it's become a frequent stop ever since.
Beers from all over the world, great beers on tap and a friendly greeting from Buddy, the King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, every time we visit.
Jake and Annie always make us feel like we are coming over to a friends' house for beers and a game on tv.
Love it here!
Simply put: they have nailed it.
Tom B's Review is spot on. It will take you years to get through all the bottles on the shelf and the 6 taps rotate constantly enough that there's always something fresh to try every time you walk in.
It has become a cozy hang out for late evening conversations with my friends. The owners are indeed friendly, clearly beer fans, and clearly interested in delivering a great experience every single time.
Special Brews is indeed special because it blurs the lines between bottle shop and pub. I admit, I'd love to see the pub side of things expand by adding some square feet and maybe even more food options, but seriously...the place is already awesome.
Did I mention they nailed it?
All the reviews are true, thus far. This place has a superb, 500+ beer selection with prices which range from fair to excellent. They have five or six taps pouring local brews, and the owner or manager was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. My friends and I bought a couple of cases and were treated to a free pint of local stout!
Belgians of all types, great Eastern European selection, great WA and OK beers as well as many from several East coast brewers, tons of sours and funky beers, lots of inventive beers. Oh, and FRUIT WINES AND MEADS as well, and a larger selection than I've seen yet personally any where else. I wish I had money to try every fruit wine they had but could only swing one with all the beers I was buying. The trunk was getting full anyway.
Coming from California, I am impressed by the superb quality of this bottle shop, which exceeds pretty much any I've seen in any other state. Very classy, very clean, taps on site, super reasonable prices and intelligent, motivated staff!
They also have an excellent singles policy. Their markup on singles VS. six pack is very small and I bought one of everything I couldn't find in California.
Support this amazing beer haven! I envy any beer enthusiasts within driving distance.
If I had to criticize something, it's maybe first fridge or two near the front were probably getting exposed to some afternoon sun.
Stopped in to get a growler filled and stayed perusing the shop for all the goodies. The store has definitely filled up compared to the photos. You can hangout at the bar or just look around, I highly recommend go to their website to see what is on-tap. Great service and addition to Lynnwood.
Review Source:The first thing I got when I went in the dooor was a friendly greeting from the owner. Maqny beers to chose from and very easy to find and access. see the movie i did below to get a feel for this wonderful shop.

Great new addition to the south snohomish county beer scene. So new, in fact, that drop cloths and seconds-old coats of paint were part of the ambiance for my first visit. Within a week they finished building the bar and started pulling taps of six different local beers. These guys aren't messing around. They get it done and they do what they say they will. Now you can come in and sit down for a pint, or crack one of the hundreds of delights in the coolers. Depending on your personal flavor of beerlove, this is either the best bar in town, or Beer University, or both.
Great selection; they seem to have virtually everything every other bottle shop in town has for their permanent shelved collection.
Obviously they haven't started their own cellar or private-labelled special release program, but that's a tiny fraction of any store's inventory. What they do have is tons and tons of beers, all arranged by place of origin. Starting from the left front corner with Washington and working around the country and across the pond as you go back through the store, you see tons and tons of singles. They have a bunch of six packs on open shelves, and a shockingly good selection of Christmas beers for May. I grabbed a Mikkeller Santa's Little Helper 09. Woot!
Best of all is the infectious enthusiasm of the owners--they want a living room feel, they want a great tap lineup that's always rotating in new surpises, they want to get to know their cutomers, find out their tastes, and turn them on to great beers.
They have the bug like all good bottle shop owners should--they clearly think of themselves as beer geeks, too, and as beer messengers in a way, turning people on to the good stuff and letting 'em know where it's at. I am so, so, so happy to have a store like this in my hood. Here's to hoping for big successes for them over the years to come.
